A really fun story about "Mat", a young boy growing up in rural Malaysia in the 1950's. He's a typical kid -- hates going to religious school, loves hanging out and going fishing with his buddies -- but that's about where the similarity ends with American kids. Mat's family works at a rubber plantation but their way of life may be changing as a tin mining operation moves into the area. Can their simple but beautiful way of life survive modern industrialization? The illustrations hooked me. Now I've got to get the sequel....
