This was a fun read, and I enjoyed the development of the characters throughout the story. I do think there were some opportunities for challenging the characters (like forcing them to deal with specific logical consequences or depriving them of advantages) but since this is the first book in a series, I can understand that the author might not want to front-load all the excitement in the first book.

The characters were well-rounded, though the main character was wrong only once in the whole story and even then it wasn't something that could be considered a flaw. I am somewhat biased in this, but I think that I'll stand by my classification of the main character as something close to a mary sue for that reason - not that everyone likes him, but that he's never wrong, is the best at what he does without any exceptions, and he nearly always gets what he wants with very little struggle.
Overall, the story was average. Fun, but nothing exceptional. I probably won't read the next installment. ...more
