Then onto the second part the author presents us with his psychiatric theory, Logotherapy.
I had already read books and watched movies about the concentration camps. But maybe it was something that I learned and then later left it forgotten in my memories, but to read it from someone that lived all of those atrocities made me bring back a lot of questioning, emotions of disbelief, surprise, anguish, powerless, terror and even some of anger. However, the author tells us of some of these experiences from the psychiatric point of view, he said it himself, it is not a historic book, but one of what we lived and experienced, and with the help of his psychiatric background could understand the what and why of what was happening, and make his conclusions about the human behavior.
I think we should never forget this moment of the human history where we can see the different ¨races¨ of man, the decent and indecent race.
I´m not a psychiatric nor phycologist but his Logotherapy theory makes a lot of sense and reading thru it was filled with aha! and reflection moments. It is interesting how this theory approaches the patient from the human point of view, without involving religions or believes.
I think it is an excellent book to read when we are felling stock in life and that things are not working out as expected or planned. It should be a must-read during adolescence, besides the reading is light and easy to follow and understand without any previous knowledge on psychology. As the title of the book says it, it will help you to find a meaning, and even it does not hold a secret recipe, it definitely helps as reference point to begin you own quest for your meaning....more

The Wonderful love story in a period after the colony and independence of a Latin-American city/country. A very interesting way of telling the story. The tales and character development are intertwined, and it is fascinating to see the events of the story from both perspectives. Perhaps I had high expectations, being this book from Gabriel Garcia Marquez, winner of the Nobel Prize of Literature, and even when I enjoyed reading it, I´m not sure if it is a master´s piece. I like how the author manages to immerse us on a world from that period of time, and how you end up feeling as part of the story. The pages turn and turn, and you only want to keep reading to know what is next. The book is written in a light prose, easy to follow, but fill of countless reflections, observations, maxims, ways of seeing and living life. It is a simple story, but fill of passion, love and discovery. I find amusing that the place where the story develops is never mentioned by name, but people that knows about this book were able to discover where this story took place, based on the details of the story, concluding that the city is Cartagena, Colombia. Never a book has made me laugh so hard as this one. And one of those moments is when Fermina and Florentino finally have their formal encounter, in her house, when she is a widow and both are old, and the body betrays Florentino. Without a doubt a book to have in your collection and an excellent story that makes you think about love, the loves that come to us and leave, and the loves that we have in our lives. ...more

With an easy prose to read and follow, Javier Reverte, mixes in an extraordinary way, historic facts, explanations, personal reflections, poetry; all of this in a tale of extraordinary places, filled with history and a spirit that transcends for centuries. I have always wanted to read more about the Greek Civilization, its history, mythology, inventions, contributions to humanity, etc. and this book is the right place to start. It helped me to learn more about this great Civilization. The book can be read in a very structure way and it summarize very well the development of this civilization. I remember when I was studying History in Highschool and that this subject didn´t have a big impact on me , I think it has a lot to do with the structure of the study. Instead of trying to learn/memorize names, dates, places; we should reflect on the impact in humanity that this civilization had and still has. Even now after 2,000 years the teachings of the Hellenic Civilization are part of our life and culture. I feel deeply saddened when a read the moments where, because of divisions and intolerance, great cultural treasures disappear, multiple buildings and temples were destroyed, and thousands of books were burned. As he continue to develop the story, the author begins to tell it as type of traveler’s guide, do not confuse it with a touristic guide. The author shows us in a very natural and open way, how to travel and discover these wonderful places. I hope one day I can visit one or some of these wonderful places. At the same time, I hope that I can read some of the other authors that Javier references in the book and doing so I can learn even more about the great Greece....more

It is hard to accept, while reading how the story develops, that these are real life events.
I have never read a book based on a real story, most of the books I have read have been novels, which lots of them are inspired on real events, but this book is based or is a story of event that happened in real life.
After reading the book I did a little of research to learn more a about the case and found that there is plenty of information available to deepen your knowledge about the case, and that in fact, all of this really happened.
The structure of the book is interesting. The first part is told from Mario Spezi perspective and the second part from Douglas Preston perspective.
As you continue to read the development of the history you only want to keep turning the pages and discover the outcome of it. The authors are great at keeping the mystery and suspense of the story.
The book it is not just about the development of the investigation, or investigations, it is also an opportunity to learn a little about the rich and vast culture and history of Italy.
At the same time, it is a reflection of the freedom of the press, and the challenges journalist face when they go against the official investigations.
It is hard to think, that after all the terrible things that happened, the case remains, so far, unsolved.
I never thought I would like this book this much. I´m seriously considering reading more books of Douglas Preston. ...more

It is very interesting the way to describe emotions and feelings, in a profound and eloquent way. I like that during most of the story the name of the character it is not mentioned until we are in the middle of the story (of course the name is not a surprise, but it was a detail that I found interesting). It is not a mystery; it is just not mentioned. Other interesting aspect is that the monster is not named, is it nameless, it is just after in the development of the tradition of this story that the monster is named after its creator. It is interesting to read a book with such an impact from which multiple or different works have been created by its influence: plays, movies, books, etc. You can see the origins of the fiction/terror genre y read in its pure form the tale. In had in my mind few images from different sources that were influenced by the book, but these are just an exaggeration of specific details on the story. Some fragments tend to be somewhat philosophical/poetic and I really enjoyed them. As with any great book it has been subject of studies and the experts about it have tried to decipher the messages and meanings of the multiple elements of the book. An important learning from the story is that everything has an origin, a reason of being. This does not mean that the acts are justifiable, but all of this were generated in some point in time by some cause from which there is no return. In certain moments you could even feel sympathy towards the monster when you know his part of the story and one can not more than wonder what type of life or finale it had been if it had been accepted by society. I find very intriguing the social context on which the book is publish. To think that the book was published in 1818 and how women was regard on those times, and even when these were limitations Mary Shelley published the book. The support of her family and friends were critical to her, but at the end it was her courage that made the launch possible. The Afterwork section by UIrich Baer offers great notes and explanations to the book, and it helps to comprehend in a more profound way. I really enjoyed reading to this book....more

Great narrative, and a fascinating way of the author to unravel the history, personality, character of this iconic person. It's a reading that keeps you focused, willing to keep going and continue to discover Steve Jobs life. It leaves me with a great experience, and even though I do not consider myself an Apple fan, reading the biography of one of its founders, I can now appreciate the hard work and great design of Apple products. I learned several things that I wish can help me in my professional life. Something that marked me was how to find where to focus and give all of your energy, creativity, abilities and create something extraordinary, without other thing as goal than just create the best product ever. From the multiple things that Steve Jobs was, he was a great artist with an spectacular creativity combined with a vision that you rarely see in a CEO....more
