While a lot of this book is very similar to many other paranormal and military special forces group books, this one has a certain style that is distinct to the author. Even if I hadn't known she had written it, I could have picked it up from reading the book. One thing that is different from her other books is that there are fewer threads going on as this is a first volume, and even versus other series, there were fewer sequel baiting characters. I really enjoyed some of the gender dynamics, and the way that the SEAL character was actually not super alpha or overwhelming. I can't wait for the sequel!...more

Still this fits in well with current fascination with dystopias, and would be suitable for younger audience than other dystopias--a 4th/5th grade level....more

I started reading it at 8 last night and read it all in one sitting, I just couldn't put it down. It was a non-stop thrill ride pretty much from start to finish, in a world that was both realistic and terrifying. For the most part it seemed a totally realistic world that I felt compelled to figure out just like Kira. It had all the elements I've loved in other stories, such as Hunger Games and Ender's Game (though the writing reminded me most of OSC's) I appreciated that the story had a definite conclusion, that this entry in the series told a story--that while it left loose ends, it finished in this entry enough that I left satisfied, and wanting the next entry.
I can't wait until it comes out, so I can recommend it for all of my patrons, though I think they will probably not need me to tell them about it!...more

I enjoyed reading it, but sort of felt like this kid was sure lucky. After a while of near death escapes and discovering food in surprising places I found I was not as worried about his fate--plus it was told in past tense, so you knew he would survive.
Right after I read this I started Ashes, and so far it feels like the opposite--everything that could go wrong is going wrong. ...more

I think it was a very good installment of the series, and played out the themes that had been building throughout to their logical and painful end.
I've been thinking about it, and this final installment reminded me of the Ender's Game/Ender's Shadow series a lot, though with more negative views on war. Some people don't or wont like the ending, but to me it is the way it had to be and the way the characters would want it. I think that with all the action that goes on in the books it is easy to think that is what the characters want, but it reminds me of a point in Ender's Game where he Ender goes to this lake and doesn't want to leave. Just because Katniss and Peeta have been at the center of the action in these books doesn't mean that is what they want, whereas Gale always wanted to be and do more. This installment develops Gale's character a lot....more
