Wow. This one was so much fun..
It's cozy fantasy. Instead of a great quest to go out and fight orcs or trolls, it's all about a female orc opening up a cafe. Coffee, lattes, cinnamon rolls, and a few other fun surprises. And a bit of trouble runs into her along the way... ...more

Rex writes his series a little different. Rather than all the characters being introduced at first with parallel timelines, weaving through the complex plots to reach a conclusion, each of his next books in the series start at a time in the past with different characters and their backstory before reaching the current timeline left off on the last book.
Once you get the hang of slowing down to learn about a new character, it really adds a lot of depth to the world. This book is all about dragons, which he has an interesting concept of dragons rarely reaching adulthood because of a curse that has their own fire sacks exploding them as they begin to reach maturity. This book is all about trying to overcome that to bring adult dragons to a kingdom.
I feel a new character was cut short, but nonetheless, another great addition to the world. ...more

This was another fun adventure where two people go off into the wildlands and find people and dragons at odds with each other, as well as a deep anger rooted within the people. It's a mystery that needs solving, and it's a lot of fun seeing the bond between the people and the dragons.
It wasn't as fun and exciting as the first book books in the series, but nonetheless, still a great dragonrider series. I look forward to reading the rest in the series.

I love dragon stories, and this one is different than many. Instead of the love for dragonriders and being a dragonrider as many epics start, this one takes a different approach. Dragons are feared. So much so, that expeditions go out every year during hatchling season to try and rid the land of the creatures before they reach maturity.
Reecah is uneasy about it though, and ever since a little girl, she has dreamed of flying.
An epic adventure of life and loss, and the dare to dream. Looking forward to the next book in the series!...more

Wow, what a fun adventure. A unique concept of through the dragon's point of view, with humans not even mentioned, but really there throughout...
Now, this series seems to only have dragons, no wyverns, wyrms, amphitheres or anything, and only fire-breathing dragons, not other elemental dragons out there.
However, there are some really neat, and unique abilities by different types of dragons. Rather than different elements like fire, ice, lightning, shadow, etc, this author brings to life regions of dragons like: sandwings, nightwings, rainwings, mudwings, skywings, seawings, and icewings--all with unique abilities to their race.

It didn't bring me is as much as Wheel of Time and Cephrael's Hand, but I think as this series goes on, it'll get more epic. The audio book was done by Michael Kramer and so it was masterfully done.

I tried to get into a few of her other fantasy series besides Emperor's Edge, Dragon's Blood, and the Dragon's Blood sequel series. I hadn't got into them yet. I tried in the beginning and they didn't grab me right away. I know I need to get more pages in, since Lindsay is a fantastic writer and I know they'll suck me in at some point, but this one reminded me of the books by her I love so much. Hooked me in right away.
Quirky characters. Book nerds. Sarcasm. Witty.
All the fun stuff you'd expect from Lindsay Buroker.

John is clearly a poet and wonderful with prose. I've found that people with a mental illness, have absolutely wonderful minds. My mom also has bipolar, and her writing is wonderful, when she can put the discipline to sit down and do it. A person with bipolar is often sporadic, unrestful, and hard to concentrate. My mother has it, and so I understand it more than most.
When I saw that John himself had bipolar, and wrote about his experiences, I was eager to pick up this book. I've talked to Mom over the years about it, but getting additional insight from another who had the patience to write his journey down, was inspiring.
It was like hearing from a good friend. The voice for the narrative was engaging, and I consumed every word. I look forward to reading the rest of John's book for a wonderful insight into the mind of mental illness.
