The first book I've ever read from R. Phoenix was Want which was a painful DNF. If you read my review it might look like the DNF was because of the age play, but it actually wasn't. God knows I can read almost anything if the writing is good (I'm looking at you Claustrophilia). "Want" lacked in character development and emotional depth, in making me connect with the characters and plot. It was simplistic, many reactions didn't make sense and the dialogue needed work.
We-he-he-ll, Gilded Cages is another thing completely.
The author really stepped up her writing game, giving us 3 characters so different and unique that I couldn't stop reading about. It might sound a simple story at first, but it felt much more than that to me. It's a book about psychological conditioning, manipulation and dubious submission, written so well, that I wasn't even bothered by those damn diapers.
*clap-clap-clap-clap* Can't believe Amazon almost removed this one from their site. It's not even that dark--or, my sense of depravity has gone to hell-- but It needs to be said it's NOT for everyone.
I wish this could have been a 5 stars book but it felt like it ended just when the story was getting started. It needed at least a couple more chapters to feel complete.
I had fun reading, then had fun talking to Moony, Jan and Shile about it, and I think I'm going to re-read it again soon. If someone ever asks me if I know a good puppy and age play book I'll say search no further.
Ah, the dark books, I've been missing them this year. Thank you R. Phoenix for this one....more

Tracht was a sadist from beginning to end. He stuck to the character, tormenting, humiliating and showing Alex the sharpness of his tough love. He didn't get sappy, sugary or lame in his behavior, never letting go of what made him a sadist on behalf of love 2. Alex had a nice character development arc. He was a conman, a delinquent, who sold himself into bondage for a 5 years contract to pay a huge debt made by his twin brother. He was a major naive dumbass. At no point during the story did I feel any pity for what was happening to him. He sold himself into bondage knowing how dangerous it would get. Suck it up, boy! *pun intended* But during the second half of the book he started being aware of his stupidity and learning and growing. I liked that. 3. Nice character development for two side characters.
What I didn't like: 1. Some sadist scenes Tracht pulled - I could have done without. Not out of shock value or because I couldn't take them (I've read Claustrophilia, I'm practically immune), but out of boredom. The character development would have gone just the same without them. 2. No major plot
Overal rating is 3.5.
Writing: 4 My enjoyment: 3.5 Plot 2.5 Character development: 4.
Thank you to Moony and Teal for the buddy read and the awesome side conversations on the book. :D
P.S. I don't like dumbasses as MCs in stories. I don't find "stupid" hot or interesting. But I didn't let that affect my rating because Alex had a nice character development....more

I can't believe I've reached the other end in one piece... I. AM. EXHAUSTED! I need cute fluffy reads ASAP to purge myself. I need to shower in holy water together with my kindle and be exorcised. I haven't been to church in years but this Sunday I'll be booking a seat for confession.
Why? Do you see my rating for this book? Do you see it? It's five stars. FIVE. Five stars!
I'm gonna tell you why I rated the book with five stars but first I'll give you 3 chances to step away. 1. This will be the book for you only if you are interested in deep dark reads with murder and psychopaths and characters like in The Silence of the Lambs.
2. The Trigger warnings: abusive relationships, blood, corpses/necrophilia, cannibalism, claustrophobia, death, emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, drug use, forced captivity, graphic sex, kidnapping, rape, suicide (attempted), torture, violence, watersports/urine
3. More details on the trigger warnings under a spoiler tag: -> Will there be necrophilia sex described on page? (view spoiler)[ To my horror, yes, just when I thought it was gonna be only in Chris's head it appeared and made me sick (hide spoiler)] -> Will there be cannibalism on page? (view spoiler)[ There is so much cannibalism that it will render you vegan for half a year (hide spoiler)] -> Will they be eating someone still alive? (view spoiler)[ *Gags* *fans the memory away* *gags again* yesss *vomits* (hide spoiler)] -> claustrophobia, how bad is it? (view spoiler)[ Chris is locked in a small box and kept in there for weeks. Then he is locked in a drawer size cage with electrical bars (hide spoiler)] -> Is there any eroticism in the book? (view spoiler)[ There are sex scenes. But for more than half of them you might need a bucket for puking close by and some holy water (hide spoiler)] -> How bad is the violence? The worst I've read about. Ever.
This book is the final boss for every dark thriller reader. You think you may have battled and won dominion over darker books. Nah. This is the darkest thing you can read. This is the abyss. This is so f**ked up that it twists the entire meaning of "f**ked up" to a whole other level. Don't read it just out of curiosity, especially if you don't tend to read dark books. Don't do it. You're gonna get crushed and scarred forever and it will not be the author's fault but your own for choosing this book.
If you still pick this book up, it's your choice and your choice only. Don't say you haven't been warned. Any emotional distress will be your own doing.
I gave it five stars because: 1. The writing, editing and book structure is absolutely brilliant. I was uncomfortable and distressed most of the time and the superb writing kept me going page after page after page 2. The characters blew me away. There are two pshychos not one, the only difference between them being the level of depravity and deviation and the fact that one shark is a Great White while the other is a Megalodon. I am in awe and flabbergasted by the character development. Ivan and Chris were completely unapologetic for their deviations. At no point did the author try to make the reader root for them and make any apologies for them. Nothing wrong had happened to them in their childhood. They didn't come from bad families. They just were born with these unspeakable deviations. Chris has more remorse for his killings and urges, while Ivan has none. 3. The mental conditioning: at one point I did not know whom was being brainwashed, Chris by Ivan or myself by the author. 4. I read the most atrocious things possible, not because they were enjoyable, but because they were keeping me on the edge of my seat, in a twisted addiction to the story and the characters, wanting to know what will happen next 5. This book pulverized my boundaries. I might never read a book with these tags ever again. It was enough for me, but if I ever get back the courage to read something like this, Claustrophilia will stand as reference 6. Claustrophilia made me want to rate down all the psycho books I've 5 stared because they can't hold a candle to this. 7. This book is present tense, has dual POV and is split in 3 parts. For the last two parts we move from present to past. I hate these things. They make me rate low. This being said, I loved the past and present exchanges in this book. They improved the book. They improved the plot. They improved everything.
Now I need drown myself in sugary fluffy reads for recovery.

I ... cannot take... another enema, another baby diaper change, another bottle feeding or another "Call me Daddy, twin brother".
I wish the worldbuilding, character development, or character reactions could have captivated me enough to get past the diapers and the enemas. But most of the times the events, the reactions and even the dialogue were just weird.
This is the 2nd book where I read about revenge between brothers, where one younger brother (even if younger by 2 mins) is abused for years by an older brother, and then he takes revenge and pays with the same coin, humiliating the other one. The first book was The Invisible Chains - Part 1: Bonds of Hate by Andrew Ashling where sexual slavery was the punishment, the second one was Want where treating the brother as a baby/toddler was the punishment.
Both were missing that quelque chose needed to spark my interest in liking the story.
The search for a good, dark incest book continues..... At least I know age play is not my kink o.O...more

With Call the Coroner Avril Ashton managed to bring to paper one of my deepest, darkest and most perverted literary fantasies **clap clap clap**. Thanks to all my friends for recommending this book. Since ever I dropped in the middle of the most awesome reader group (MM romance), I’ve been getting dozens recommendations for Call the Coroner. Can’t believe I waited to read it this bloody long!
The trick with Call the Coroner is to take your time reading it and take little pauses when you find yourself bored. There are moments when it’s a little slow, and moments when it’s too fast. And moments when it’s a little repetitive. But overall it’s goooooood, and if you like the dark books and can stomach *ahem* the torture and a little blood, this is going to be a winner, baby. (Yes, this is who I am now, talking about torture and blood as if they’re ingredients to cake.)
The thing that amazed me the most about this book: I believed the relationship. Never thought I would, because, duh, insane, but I did. The sex. Damn! The hate-sex? Hot Damn! The MCs? *wolf howl* The plot? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz *snores*-- but who cares about the plot when you have a mafia boss denting walls and moving furniture around the room with a high class assasin? I don’t! Not one bit. Nope! Clash those swords gentlemen! En garde!
My friend Simone reminded me that I forgot to mention the cheese at the end that got the MCs a little "out of character", so BEWARE the CHEESE! The cheese was not very bad, actually a little cute, like watching two doberman eating peanut butter.

Wow…. I ripped through this book in less than a day. On a workday.
Feral is a book that begins with heartbreak. Shane, a homeless young man, is desperately looking for a vet to accept him and his puppy for a medical emergency. It seemed like his puppy has been poisoned and if he'll not receive any help, he will die. At the 3rd try he finally finds a doctor with a heart. But the problem are the bills. How is Shane going to pay for the doctor, if he only has some change in his pocket he planned to buy a pack of ramen and two oranges with? Life has the habit of throwing you a good ball once in a while and in an unexpected turn of events Shane finds himself with temporary shelter, the bills paid for the puppy and a new friend.
Noah works as a volunteer at the vet clinic where Shane brought his puppy. Frightened at first by Shane's threatening facade and armor, he keeps his distance, but his boss and her wife propose a project where Shane and Noah could work together for the greater good of the homeless community and their pets. As Noah gets to know Shane better he realizes what a kind young man he is and can't help not fall for him. Noah has to work to peel away Shane's insecurities and his rooted idea that he is not worth anything.
The plot was a little boring for me because of a murder mystery that is thrown in - which seems exciting at first but fizzes like a balloon at resolution. However it does not take away from my enjoyment of the book, because I loved reading about Shane and Noah and watching their relationship blossom. I could read about these two all day, and I bought the next book in the series to do just that even if they are secondary characters. My only complaint: the relationship blossomed fast, in over a week which was a bit unbelievable.
I liked also the subplot of Noah's past life and the appearance of his ex-bf, Roman. Spoiler alert: Roman is a little bitch. He wants Noah back and is shocked by his relationship with Shane and of course, does some bad shit.
Before I close the review, let's all be reminded just as Shane has to be reminded: [image]

Wow! I couldn't put this book down. The abusive, dysfunctional relationship between Hiroku and Seth was like a siren's call at midnight. When I was not reading, I was thinking about Seth and Hiroku. Before sleep and after sleep, I was thinking about Seth and Hiroku. I completely became obsessed with their story. Seth was the type of character I enjoy reading about, the yandere of Japanese manga culture, so obsessive with the object of his love that he would rather destroy his lover, than bear the thought of losing him. And Hiroku, so young and loving and ensnared in the clutches of a fallen angel, mistaking hell for paradise, broke my heart.
"The first time I saw Seth Barrett, he was leaning against a chain-link fence with his fingers hooked on the metal, arms spread wide, and I remember thinking he reminded me of a tiger or some other large predator. Caged, for the time being."
He was not a tiger, Hiroku, but a giant boa constrictor. They fell in love, and Seth, who had a fear of abandonment, became ferociously possessive and obsessive with Hiroku. And Hiroku, who was only 15 gave him everything he had. With each word, with each action, Seth looped his giant serpent tail around his lover, feeding his obsession with every portion of Hiroku's soul.
Seth hugged me tightly with one arm and grabbed the side of my head with his hand to draw me in closer. He whispered in my ear almost desperately, “I love you so much, Hiroku.”
When Hiroku tried to leave, Seth clung to him tighter.
“I love you, Hiroku,” Seth said in a choked voice. [...] All I ever see in my mind is you. I love you. You are the only person I want to be with, now and forever. You are so much more than a boyfriend to me, and I understand if you don’t want to be with me right now, but if I can’t have you in my life, even a little bit, then I just want to die.”
And when he felt him slipping through his fingers. he gave him drugs to take his free will away from him.
“I love you more than anything else in this world,” Seth whispered with tears in his eyes, but I was a helium balloon, and he was so far away and getting smaller and more irrelevant by the second.

This is not a romance, but the struggle of one boy to escape from a love so consuming it nearly killed him. Laura Lascarso is one of my favorite YA writers and I think she improved her game with this book. Don't skip The Bravest Thing. Hiroku's story continues, where he meets Berlin, the opposite of Seth who tries to bring him back to the light. But Seth's shadow is always there, clinging to him. For me it worked really well reading Hiroku first, then The Bravest Thing

So are the words of Psychopath, a serial killer whose modus operandi consists in kidnapping nice family men[image]
Evil isn't born, it's made.
So are the words of Psychopath, a serial killer whose modus operandi consists in kidnapping nice family men (loving heads of perfect families), torturing and killing them, then feeding their scattered body parts to the wolves. Sick, isn’t it? But what if the men are not nice, nor loving, and they are in fact wife beaters and child abusers? What if these men rape their wives in front of their children, beating them bloody and abusing them psychologically and physically, until these women become so messed up they think the only way out for them is suicide? And what if the children bear the same wounds under their small clothes, trying to hide them at school by excusing themselves from PE? Doesn’t this soften your judgement on Psychopath? Doesn’t this transform the serial killer into some sort of vigilante, just like Deadpool or Oliver Queen? Just like Dexter?
Deep down society has an appetite for the macabre and that makes some of us sympathize with serial killers. We transform them into larger than life celebrities, we know their names, we watch the movies where famous actors portray their lives and we read the books they inspire. Why? Because let’s face it, we are curious to see what had happened in their lives to have led them down this path. Serial killers are not like other people. They lack conscience, they lack empathy and most of them seem to lack a soul. But they are highly intelligent, meticulous individuals, because only a genius can evade capturing for so long. And our Psychopath has evaded the law for more than 15 years.
Evil is made.
The passages where Psychopath’s childhood is presented were the hardest to read. And when I say hard, I mean HARD! I could get through the serial killing, through the kidnapping & abuse of Ella, but when I got to the scenes from Psychopath’s childhood I just flipped. Have you ever seen “Room” with Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay? Well this was like the mother and the child escaped the room only to enter “The Burning Bed”. But that was not all, sprinkle that with some animal abuse in front of a 9 year old child, and add finding his mother in a pool of blood at 10 and you get the picture of Psychopath’s childhood.
Sometimes I look at all those kids in our neighborhood who ride bikes or eat food, enjoying their time, and I wonder what it is like to be so carefree. To not be afraid. To not constantly apologize for breathing.
There is one question that bothers Psychopath: why do all those abused women stay for years with their husbands? Why don’t they leave? Why don’t they take their children and leave? This question broke me, because I too personally know so many women in these situations (psychological abuse, not physical), and I ask myself the same questions. Why do they stay?
One day Psychopath bumps into Ella and feels attracted to her. He despises his feelings so much, he wants to destroy them and put them in the ground, together with Ella. But when he finds out more about Ella's past. he decides to use her to find an answer to his burning question first. So the hunting game begins. This is the start of the book.
Poor, unlucky Ella. One year before graduation Ella comes home from a party to find her family murdered by a pedophile serial killer, and her little sister raped and dead in the basement. She embarks on a mission to work one day for the FBI and help put these monsters in prison for life. She graduates from Criminal Psychology and from the Police Academy, but the FBI keeps rejecting her applications because she is a risky resource due to her past to work with serial killers. Until one day, the FBI calls and offers her a position in the Behavioural Analysis Unit. Her dream has come true. Only that her being hired was not her doing but that of Psychopath, who is a FUCKING member of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. And the reader embarks on a guessing game of who Psychopath is among the men in the team.
This was the most brilliant thing the book did. We have Psychopath’s POV, but we don’t know who he is until very late in the book. There are clues everywhere, but some are fake, and some seem fake until much later in the book when they actually turn real.
Noah, Preston, Kierian. There is something about them that unsettles me, each in a different way.
It was pure entertainment for me to look at the clues and identify Psychopath.
I also want to talk about the sex scenes between Ella and one of her colleagues. Those are some of the hottest MF scenes I’ve read in my life. The man in question knew how to use his tongue, and boy, did the writer knew how to describe them. You have that to look forward to at least amidst all the gore and insanity.
Up until 70%, the book was pure suspense perfection. Then it was just good, with an epilogue that pissed me off, and I’m removing 0.5 from the rating because of the epilogue. Many liked the epilogue. I thought it was just beyond sick.
This is not a love story. Or if you want, it’s as much of a love story as it was between Harley Quinn and the Joker. A purely demented, psychotic & sick love story.
She almost reminds me of a doll with her pale, clear skin that will probably look magnificent with blood smeared all over it while her beautiful brown pools fill with tears and fear from what I make her feel.
Seeing Ella, an FBI agent, develop the Stockholm syndrome Psychopath craved in order to answer his burning question was very uncomfortable to read. I know it has happened in reality, there are many women out there who chose love over sanity, as there are 8 documented cases of serial killers (Ted Bundy, Charles Manson etc) that got married to one of their fans while in prison for life. But that didn't stop me screaming at Ella: "Are you fucking stupid, woman?"
But just the idea of giving her freedom unsettles me, awakening something dark and possessive inside me that roars. She is mine. And no matter how bad that fucking is, she will always stay mine.
Just like the Joker, Psychopath was overly protective and possessive of Ella. He would not allow anything or anyone to harm her, including herself. Anyone but him that is.
No matter how you will find this book, mock my words, you will sympathize with Psychopath and feel no mercy for his victims. And isn't that fucked up?
4.5 stars. P.S.1: I’ve been so entertained, I wasn’t even bothered by repetitions like “this guy has to be seen to be believed”, “This man has to be seen to be believed!” , “His confidence has to be seen to be believed” ,”Her naivety has to be seen to be believed,”, “my stupidity has to be seen to be believed” , “My life has to be seen to be believed.” If you are a picky reader, you will find a couple of editing faults but they are minor. One of them was Ella falling in love with Psychopath. One or two more chapters would have worked better to add an extra layer on how she went down that path.
P.S.2: At the end, a couple of chapters prior to the epilogue there is a twisty twist. P.S.3: Another serial killer appears in the book called Sociopath and I saw there are already two books where he is an MC. Guess what I'll be reading soon? :)

You can feel Logan's loneliness, you can feel the tragedy of his death... a young man who had never been kissed, never been loved, never been given the chance to come out of the closet
I’d never been kissed. I never even came out of the closet—not that people couldn’t figure it out on their own. I simply hid everything away. Including myself.
We don't even meet Harris but his image comes forth through one single sentence. The Demon, the Destroyer, The Monster...
I wouldn’t have pinned Harris as the type to take what he pleased and destroy it before allowing anyone else a chance.
You know it's going to end badly, and still you get your hopes up, maybe, just maybe this version you are reading is different than all the other versions already read and reviewed.
“Stay strong, beautiful. I need you to make it through this so I can get your number, okay?”

I guess dying has a way of turning you into a believer. I had to let go of so many things that I’d never get to do.
I loved it! Thanks @Gabriella for the recommendation.

I am officially obsessed with Hiroku andWelcome to Hillbily Hell, where the gays are so far in the closet they practically reached Narnia.

I am officially obsessed with Hiroku and Seth (and Berlin but he was more of a balm to Seth's scorching fire). I sat on this review for 3 days just to test if the obsession will fizz away. But 3 days and two other very good books later, they are still there with me and I can't seem to let them go.
So whenever a book makes me so obsessive with the characters it gets a 5+++ from me.
There is a discussion among my friends as to which book to read first, Hiroku or TBT. I've read Hiroku first, and TBT second, and some of my friends the other way around. I think any way is the best way. Just read these books because they are absolutely amazing.
Berlin is a sheltered farm boy, that goes to church every Sunday, popular at school because he is the runner back of the football team, with a hot girlfriend and with a secret. He's gay, but he can't say anything about it because the entire town is filled with homophobic pricks and he could lose his place on the football team and then bye bye scholarship. So half of the book Berlin will just be a pussy, crushing on Hiroku and pursuing him, but keeping it under secret. Hiroku on the other hand does not give a shit. He wears eyeliner to school and doesn't hide the fact he is gay. This puts him smack in the attention of the school bullies, Berlin's best friends. Every time the bigot brigade would appear on paper they would make me wish Hiroku had some Dragon Ball Z powers to blow them out of their hillbilly manure splattered boots.
Kamehameha bitches!
I was not mad at Berlin for wishing to hide who he really was to protect himself. Some people are so evil they can destroy your entire life. But I found him a little stupid from the way he handled his relationship with Hiroku. Maybe it was love that made him make the mistakes that helped Trent figure out he and Hiroku were an item. And when he realized his mistake it was already too late because by then everything had exploded in Lowry.
Seth will never be too far away, always prodding the fences for Hiroku's resolution to stay away from him. He's more intense than ever and as obsessed with Hiroku as he had been in the first book. There are two villains in this book, Trent and Seth, but Trent is just a bedragled mule in comparison to Seth's red eyed horse from hell.
I recommend it to everyone but this is not a fluffy read. Just like Hiroku, it's like a punch to the guts. Enjoy! :D...more

For such a long book as Bloodraven was I don’t have much to say, because everything that needs to be said has already been written in other reviews.
As of this moment Bloodraven is my second favorite MM fantasy, after Captive Prince and before Cethe. Funny enough all these three have the master - slave trope and all the violence that comes with it, so I guess I have a type. Sorry, not sorry :D. Don’t go into this book blindly without knowing what to expect because you’re going to get a kick in the guts, several times. Many warn about the beginning, I’ll warn you about what lurks near the end. Which is this:

Masterfully written. Epicly dark. Long. Absolutely. Fucking. Hot. All hail Bloodraven & Yhalen and the interracial relationship between a half-ogre warrior and a human wielder of powerful forest magic--- something I never knew I ever, ever wanted to read about. But I guess...

And all hail Elvardo, the Dark Lord, whom I believe is secretly a softie at heart. I loved it. I’ll want to re-read it. PL Nunn is now an autobuy for me. I want more of the ogre world.
