It was different from your traditional zombie book and not too cheesy for a romance (I suppose blood and guts can do that to a romance novel). Ironically, it told a lovely story about life. Most zombie books tell the tale of surviving and conflict in a post-apocalyptic world so it was a nice change to read about what it means to be alive especially in desperate and tragic times. The world might be falling apart but it doesn’t make life worthless.
I don’t really understand the ending, though. If the Boneys served a bigger purpose than just being scary skeletons, I’m not sure I picked it up. Had there been better development with the Boneys, I probably would have rated this much higher.

There was not as much action as The Queen of Attolia but the scheming and all the deceit and plotting was really entertaining. The entire book was one big revelation about our favourite Eugenides.
Weakness There wasn’t as much mythology and the appearance of the Gods in this book, which was a little disappointing. While we already understand that the Gods play a huge part in this series, I thought this book could have included them more.
Some of the plot seemed to drag on more than it should have. There was a lot of scheming and plotting (which I like) but at some points I thought, “My God, is Gen going to have to do this his entire reign as King?” Hopefully this is all neatly tidied up in A Conspiracy of Kings.
It’s a shame that we don’t get to know more about Sounis, although I gather from the little blurb on the next book, we just might get more background. I hope so!
Strength Eugenides is the best part of this story – which seems like a silly thing to say considering the book is called The King of Attolia and he is, of course, the King of Attolia. I get picky when it comes to protagonists and their characteristics and character development but I think that Eugenides is a well developed and thought out character. There are many layers to him but they all mesh well and they all make sense. He has his strengths but he also has a lot of weaknesses and sometimes his weaknesses take over him. It’s good to see characters fight through internal struggles. I like that. He’s pretty bad ass, which I also like....more

While the first book, The Thief, started out slow, this one started out with some great action and suspense. It did have some slow parts but all books tend to have a place where you just have to push on. Turner has a really great mix of action and quiet parts, though, and I think in this book those slower parts are important. They set an important tone for our favourite thief’s growth in this book.
Weakness By telling you there is war in this book doesn’t really give away much so I’ll just go ahead and tell you there is war. My problem is that a lot of the logistics and how everything works in this world was a bit rushed (or in my excitement I read it too fast, that could be true).
The most important relationship to develop in this book seemed odd and while, at first, I was uncomfortable with it, after finishing the book, it made more sense and was less weird. Perhaps the execution of the development was not strong which is why it felt awkward at first. But like I said, I grew to like it.
Strength It was interesting to go from a first person perspective to a third person but I think that really expanded what Turner could do in terms of plot and character development. So, well done! The tales of the Gods was incorporated well into the story, much like the first book. Unlike the first book, this one had a lot of action. I loved it. It was so exciting to read that I finished it in just over two days. ...more
Rating and overall thoughts 3.5 out of 5 The 5 star rating is a little deceiving since a 3 looks low but it really means (to me) a good book. So, yes, IRating and overall thoughts 3.5 out of 5 The 5 star rating is a little deceiving since a 3 looks low but it really means (to me) a good book. So, yes, I thought The Thief was a good book especially the last half. Finally! The action that I thought the book would have appeared! And it was good action and great twists. Sorry I can’t say the same for the first half.
Weakness The lack of action in the first half was definitely the biggest weakness. I thought that a book called The Thief would be way more action packed. I thought we would see more stealing and less travelling. The waiting-for-action was what kept me reading.
Strength If you like mythology like I do then you liked all the myths about the Gods and the creation of the world. I felt that part of Turner’s world building was well done and added a cultural depth to the book – something that I think is skimmed over in a lot of other books. I also like how she brought them about by having them shared through campfire story telling. Whalen doesn’t do a bad job of scenery either. I thought that was well done. I had an entire map made in my head (is it weird that I made the map Game of Thrones opening credit style?). The revelation of characters and their backgrounds was interesting. Since you're reading from Gen's point of view, it all comes out slowly and eventually just dropped on you. I thought that was fun!...more
