However, most of the events happening in the present day were struggling to keep my attention and this book seriously could have used some editing to remove at least 100 pages from it. There is a solid story in there somewhere, though, and when it's good, it manages to be wonderfully charming....more
I loved the concept of this book (examining different public transportation systems in cities from around the world and talking about what they did riI loved the concept of this book (examining different public transportation systems in cities from around the world and talking about what they did right or wrong) and the execution of this idea was a joy to read. Part travelogue and partly a historical write-up on transportation, it was incredibly educational on the different cultural aspects to public transportation (i.e., why trains are such a massive deal in Japan or how Russians manage traffic in some of the most congested highways in the world). Really fascinating book overall....more

At first, I was really enjoying the different vignettes relating to the history of science fiction such as life experiences from Mary Shelley, H.G. WeAt first, I was really enjoying the different vignettes relating to the history of science fiction such as life experiences from Mary Shelley, H.G. Wells, and other various novelists and short story writers from the late 19th century. I also appreciated that several lesser known writers were spotlighted. However, in the second half of the book, I found that the artwork was letting down the writing. While the earlier vignettes' artwork were vibrant with color and life, the second half is limited to being mainly famous authors sitting around a table and just talking to each other. Sadly, the artwork depicts exactly that and nothing more, losing a lot the the book's earlier energy....more
