I found myself at times feeling like it was way too cheesey, like the giant squid attack, but yet I still liked it. He keeps the suspense up well though, and overall it was a fun read!...more

I loved the imaginative world of sand and how it was almost like water with people diving for buried treasures. The dive suits were awesome too. I wanted more of a backstory to the world, and I was kinda okay with that thinking it would come at some point, at least at the end. But the end left me a little disappointed. I felt left out of the final resolution and like there were a lot of questions unanswered. Overall, I love Howey's writing style and I would like to read more of him. Up next, Wool....more

I was totally enthralled from the beginning, and not just because of the action packed story line, but because of the amazing technology showcased in the book. The drones, the nanotechnology, cheetahs... A lot of it seems as though it could be possible in the near future, which is scary. I'm also a sucker for hidden societies and conspiracy theories, so this was right in my sweet spot. The united states amidst a civil war is a great backdrop for the book and gives Keri good reason to rise up as a hero. She is strong and intelligent and a wonderful female character to see in a YA book. This should totally be a movie....more

I was kept reading on the edge of my seat because of the mystery. Skutelsky weaves a dark and suspenseful tale that I found neither typical nor predictable. Although the writing was reminiscent of Gabriel Garcia Marquez in its magical quality, she has her own style that I found to strike the right balance of poetic but relatable. My favorite character was Gregory, but I also really connected with Sophie and Finn and loved their relationship. Perhaps the most intriguing character was the town itself with its old world feel as though it was stuck in time, haunted by its tragic history and stubbornly wedded to its archaic traditions. Especially toward the end as the mystery begins to unravel and everything comes together, I couldn't put this one down. Highly recommend. ...more

There are a lot of strengths to this story, but what I loved most was Lexi, the main character. She was fascinating, and as well rounded as one could possibly be due to her "unschooling". Her background of growing up homeschooled, having Kitchen Grandmothers (a concept I loved), and also having kickass combat and psychic skills makes her a pretty amazing lead. Feeling so vested in her, it was easy to immerse myself in the suspense of the plot. And I'm a sucker for hidden identities and forbidden lust, so it was not hard. Striker was a pretty great character as well. Great read that I would highly recommend. Looking forward to the next one!...more
