I'm officially a fan-girl for life and will buy anything this author writes. I was worried that this book wouldn't live up to its predecessor, Isle of Blood and Stone, but I shouldn't have because this was a worthy sequel, just as good as the first. The plot was super interesting and kept me guessing, the writing wasn't overly flowery or detailed. I love how Makiia just jumps right into the action from page one, without taking chapters and chapters for set-up. The set-up and world-building is instead interwoven into the story naturally. And the romance in this one, while not the focal point, was super sweet.

This was a fun, fast-paced ride through space where allies are made and new characters are introduced. Going to be honest: except for this book and one other, every second book in a duology that released in 2021 has been a massive disappointment.
Not so with this book! The stakes are higher here than in book one, the plot moves fast, and if the first book was intense, this one is a little more so. This one gave me mild Star Wars vibes during the battle scene, which I very much enjoyed. I love the writing, the storytelling, the pacing, the characters (even though you sometimes want to knock sense into some of them), and the diversity rep. Highly recommended if you like fun, fast-paced thrill rides through space with characters you can get behind....more

Loved it, loved it, loved it. From the familial bonds to the fantastical elements to the magic to the super slow-burn romance to the constant revelations. The writing is excellent and I loved the storyline. I did want to bash Shiori over the head a couple of times for her impulsiveness, but she showed such amazing character growth throughout the book. My only teensy complaint is that the dragon didn't play as big a part as I expected and I would've liked to see more of him. Other than that, five stars all around!...more

I mean, let's be real: this book broke my heart into a million pieces, put it in a blender, and then ran over it with a truck for good measure. And then this book didn't even have the courtesy to put my heart fully back together again afterwards. Rude.
So why should you read this? Because trust me, this story is worth it. It is beautiful and hard and moving and raw. This gorgeous book was worth every tear I shed...and there were many. It's powerful and relevant and so poignant. It wasI am officially a Chloe Gong fangirl and will read anything she writes. This was an excellent conclusion to the These Violent Delights duology. It was just as good as the first book, if not better, though there is certainly so much more going on than there was in the first. Romance, politics, gang fights, monster mystery, shifting allegiances, friendship, family, civil war. Excellent writing that weaves multiple storylines together seamlessly, and strong character development, seem to be Chloe Gong's writing trademarks.
This book starts off a few months after the conclusion of These Violent Delights, and if it's been a while since you read book one, this one does a pretty good job of rehashing the most important events of book one in a way that isn't info-dumpy but does help jog the memory. Our characters from the first book are back for more: Roma (who, for a gangster, is a total cinnamon roll), Juliette and her cousins Kathleen and Rosalind, and Marshall and Benedikt (Roma's BFF and cousin, respectively). Like I said, there is so much happening in this novel, but Chloe Gong meshes everything together in a way that fits and flows so smoothly. The pacing was excellent, the characters are all relatable in their own ways, and the story keeps you reading until the very end.
Highly recommend this series. These Violent Delights was one of my favourite reads of 2021, and I'm thrilled to add Our Violent Ends to that list too. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC....more

Bri is the kind of heroine I can get behind. Smart, capable, able to draw her own (sensible and realistic) conclusions. She's not infallible but she's so relatable, and I loved her from the very first page. Her moms are great and the cast of side characters added extra colour to this already vibrant and lushly descriptive novel.
I loved how the author didn't info-dump on us. We're given bits and pieces of information every once in a while, as their introduction fit the story. But at the same time, we didn't have to wait forever for new twists. This was well-written and well-paced with a super interesting storyline featuring plant magic, Greek gods, hidden legacies, and a very cool old house with its own secrets....more

I wish this author had more books out so I could devour them, but alas, this is a debut, and a fantastic one at that. It was fun and well-written, but also depicts such an accurate representation of depression and mental illness, so it's certainly not all fun and games...but it's also not dark. Told entirely from Mickey's POV, this novel somehow perfectly blended hockey college with mental illness and family dynamics. My only niggle is that I wish there was a little more romance. Alex and Shiloh are so freaking precious. Alex's optimism in the face of everything he's been through is the sunshine to Shiloh's more somber thoughts and personality. They were "awww"-inducing cuteness, there for each other every step of the way. I did feel the resolution between Alex and his parents was slightly rushed, but other than that, this book is so delightful. And that epilogue!
