The can connect to the word by finding and expressing things that they find important. An activity could include the students writing a story, drawing pictures with captions, and/or making a collage of the things they find important. Defining things that are important to a person builds their characters and allow them to see the values of their lives. I see this as an any age book (k-5th).

Also, I would turn this into a S.S. and Science activity. As a S.S. activity, students could write or draw to express what they feel is important in our world, our continent, and/or our state. Students can connect to the world around them instead of their "immediate" world. As a Science lesson, students can focus on what the important factors in our environment (nature). They could express that in writing, artistically, or verbally....more

It uses real life pictures which I think helps the student connect to the book. It involves real life food that the students are familiar with. With the many connections that they students make, they learn how fractions look in part of a whole: halves, thirds, fourths, etc.

I think a fun activity to do would be to have a Eating Fractions Party. The teacher could bring in the food mentioned in the book and have them piece the food up into fractions. Students would play as judges and the teacher would cut the food into the fractions desired. Then the students could record all the fractions that entered the contest. After the work is been done, the students could eat and be merry! The take a vote on what was their favorite. Then make fractions from the votes. ...more

Most students can relate to apples;therefore, it can help understand fractions. The book is very informative about the different types of apples. A teacher could recreate this book by reading it and having the apples there to cut in front of the students so the grasp the fraction concepts. Then the students could snack on something healthy.

The book teaches about the major fractions: halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, tenths, etc. This could lead to students bring in items or pictures of items to cut up into fractions. ...more

However, I am unsure how a chocolate lesson would happen with students of any age. I see it being messy and the students eating before we even get started. It does seem like a good and effective activity that would help the students understand fractions.

The chocolate bar is made up of 12 bars; therefore, it teaches fractions up to the twelves. Each page introduces and explains each fraction with a cute explanation.

I saw from the teachers' websites that they make paper chocolate bars that are just as effective in teaching fractions. They also are detachable so it goes along with the book. I see that they also could be made instead of bought. Then at the end of the lesson I would give them the bite size chocolate bars....more

It helps make lessons through the literature. It is done in a humorous and classroom setting. I feel that the students can relate to the book since it is about learning in a classroom just like them. Since this book has 5 different chapters about fractions, I would do a lesson on each chapter. I would read the story and have a related activity for the students to do. The book includes topics: basic fractions (halves, thirds, etc), cutting objects in equal parts (sandwiches), fractions of a set, dividing things equally, tally marks, adding fractions, comparing fractions, and money. These are all important concepts that students must know.

After doing these activities, I would have the students make a fraction book where they describe what fractions they made and illustrate them. They would have their experience and a self-made book to reflect on the major aspects of fractions....more
