Only one chapter later or it might have been the same chapter (the day had not changed), they were claiming I love yous. Sigh... Well, it didn’t bother me as much as it did in the previous book. The only problem is the wait for the next book. Not because I need the next book now. But because the world has changed over this last year or so, I’m reminded about the fragility of life.
Two of my favorite authors have passed on, taking the continuation of their series with them. I’m now worried about more and little questions that will never be answered. Selfish but true.

Well, what can I say. A good installment. It feels close to past installments, but I’ve read these over many years. I’m hard pressed to point to a specific book.
Eve is also different. She used to complain when Roarke treated the bullpen with food. This book she offered up her auto chef on her own. I didn’t know how that worked. A plot hole I’ll let go.
There were a few other plot holes. Then there is Eve being very loosely-goosey regarding breaking the law to get her criminal. Then there was the time Roarke turned off cams to tell her something. A decent criminal attorney would use that to get evidence tossed.
Anyway, maybe Eve needs to retire. I love her, but her character is going nowhere good. Though I liked this installment more than the last one.

In this book in particular, the timing when they exchange I love yous is far too soon and unnecessary. She could have waited until the end. They spent like two minutes on the page together (not counting off page) and they were saying I love you.
I wasn’t fooled by the Cillian either. Overall cute but the insta love left a bad taste in my mouth.

Roarke has been the one to straddle the line to help Eve in a case. Eve has always been the one to hold the line only dipping her toe across it in the name of justice.
Table have turn and I get it. She wants to help her man. He’s always there for her, right? But this felt out of character.
She has the creep wife killing husband with enough evidence to send him away and she’s willing to plead way down to get evidence she doesn’t need on the hired killer and Roarke’s nemesis. The thing is, what the husband has, she doesn’t really need to put him away. So why plead out. It’s just so out of character for Eve. She’s straight down the line. Believe me, if the husband had something she desperately needed, it wouldn’t have bothered me.
Enough rant. The story was better. We weren’t dealing with Eve’s overplayed issues. I did find it hard to believe Eve’s only hearing about this nemesis Roark’s apparently been watch until now.
We need a new series ARC. Eve needs a new issue that rattled her chain. I’m telling you pregnancy is it. Just saying.

The secret about Thomas was a lame plot device. The reasons not to share that secret throughout the book to his mentor/grandfather were weak. In fact, that very reason was said again five minutes before he then said ‘he deserved the truth.’ Hmm. So he didn’t deserve the truth the five million times he could have shared it before???
The truth was it was a lame plot device. This author is capable of coming up with better reasons not to share, like Thomas asked him not too, or he was spelled not to. Or maybe he should have told him and the old man refused to believe until that moment at the end and Harry cleverly finds proof. Now that would have been better than we got.
In the eyes of pop culture, this author choose “He can’t handle the truth,” multiple times until finally ‘he deserved the truth’. Really? The man was trying to kill Harry and now he can handle it??? It boggles the mind the ridiculousness of it.
Side note- this author is showing his middle age: divorced married a younger woman. Now he’s writing innuendos about threesomes and lots of other sexual references. When did Harry series turn into a lighter version of Antia Blake. Don’t hate, I enjoy both series, but seriously......more

Jane Yellowrock irks me, though I still listen to her series. I hate her love interest and what he did in the past to her was unforgivable in my eyes. But I’m a me too survivor, so maybe I see things differently.
This series, I like Nell. I like Oakum (listening, have no idea for spellings). I love Rick found redemption in this series.
Though the world building troubles me. Jane and Rick couldn’t have relations because he was a were cat which put a strain on their relationship.
Nell and Oakum can and I feel like I missed something. I don’t remember how and why they could overcome it. Especially when Oakum said in this installment they couldn’t pass it to other supernaturals??? Did the world building change in this series from Jane’s???
Anyway, I enjoyed this book. It was a bit predictable as I assumed Nell would overcome all, but I didn’t guess The Who done it. Win!!!

I love dual narration. However, I found the the male narrator didn’t differentiate his voice early on and I was lost to who was speaking. Also there was a point when I believe his dialogue was missing. It wasn’t edited in and I missed something.

So I’m actually round up on the rating to be honest.
Another one is I knew the killer/ring master from the first meet of the character and I never wavered from that. So the mystery part of the story was weak for me.
And who knew. A whole book without sex. I can do with or without. It doesn’t bother me either way. So no impact of my rating there.

Sorry to say this book just didn’t work for me Well, that was disappointing. Two books by this author in a row filled with insta love.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Sorry to say this book just didn’t work for me on so many levels. The biggest of which is insta love which I hate.
Living next door to someone for six years doesn’t automatically mean you know them even if you visually see them everyday. The fact that he had to ask what she liked on her pizza (even though he creepily knew from over hearing conversations) suggest they were little more than acquaintances before this book took place, which was six year after living next door.
Thus as this book time spanned less than a week (before the last chapter), saying I love you after a few days was unbelievable. They had little time together on the page to allow me to buy this, especially her. His feelings were based on stalking and obsession. Hers were based on loneliness and the hot guy next door. I can’t see how she would decide to transform for someone she didn’t really know (see first paragraph after spoiler heading).
Then there were the plot holes like historical references that aren’t true (see bra reference in story).
Then there was the world building problems. As referenced in the last chapter, immortals can hear for miles. Why would any of them live in a neighborhood where houses are so close. How could he get rest or even mute our conversations when so many can be overheard for miles???? How could he hear Kayla over all the conversations happing around him???
Then there was the convenience that Seth couldn’t heal something to force Kayla to decide to transform (similar to previous story referenced in book). That was a totally plot device that left me eye rolling.
The final eye roll which made this book and the last (the Larsean) stink was the pussy heroes (outside of the eye rolling insta love). I love a good guy, but sometimes too much niceness becomes unattractive to me. A man should have a spine and not be some stepford husband type that follows the woman around saying ‘yes dear’ metaphorically speaking.
Total disappointment. I have to say if the next book has insta love, I’ll give up on the series.
The only redeemable thing about this was the narrator. Great job. ...more
