At the Literary and HisInspector Armand Gamache, haunted by two previous cases and injured from one, retreats to Old Quebec City to conduct research. At the Literary and Historical Society, he finds obscure historical battle information. The “Lit and His” is an English sanctuary of sorts in the French-dominated area of Canada. When the body of an eccentric history buff is discovered in the warren-like basement, the board of the society begs for Gamache’s help. One of the cases haunting Gamache is quietly re-investigated by Beauvoir, who discovers new heart-breaking information. The larger, more famous case that haunts Gamache is revealed in teasingly brief flashbacks that reveal how Gamache was injured. The leisurely pacing contrasts with the magnitude of the revelations on the current and past cases. The plot pivots and accelerates toward the shocking conclusion. I highly recommend this book to mystery and suspense readers for the depth and scope of the story....more

Depressing story whA beautifully written depiction of America as a socialist country with the federal government granted full control over our lives. Depressing story which reminded me of the way Jews were isolated, then robbed and beaten, and killed in the name of progress in Germany. Jews then were hard-working, took responsibility for their lives, and successful. In Ng's new world order, the scapegoat for all evils is placed on Asians and anyone who appears Asian. Reading Our Missing Hearts felt like a preview of things already in lined up in America. Anyone who works hard and plans for the future will have it ripped from them and distributed by the government. Like George Orwell's predictions, Ng's may also fall on deaf ears and blind eyes. In America today, Asians and Caucasians are being blamed for every ill in society, past and present....more

This leads her uphill to a magnificent home where a large party ran Detective Margaret Nolan is sent to investigate a body found after an earthquake. This leads her uphill to a magnificent home where a large party ran into the wee hours. The body belongs to an actor who attended that party. Wading into the cesspool of lies and pretense of Hollywood's elite, Nolan and Detective Crawford find connections to the wealthy and privileged in LA, Hollywood, and Santa Barbara whose lives intersect and intertwine in shocking ways. A lively, fast-paced police procedural, this story is told in bite-size chapters with a large cast. In truth, I had to jot a few notes to keep track. Crisp dialogue and vivid descriptions kept the story roaring along. This book is part of the Detective Margaret Nolan Series. Since it is my first look at the series, I can say this book can be read as a standalone. Thank you, Minotaur Books and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader's Copy....more
