This review is on Earth At War, 1st To Fight (Book 1 of Earth at War) by Rick Partlow. This is the first book I have read by this author. It is a Military Science Fiction story about first space flights, first contact with aliens and first space war.
The story starts with a first privately-funded space flight by Daniel Gatlin around the moon with a group of passengers. One person is Andy Clanton, former space marine and now a famous science fiction author, who was a last minute choice for the flight. Gatlin is acting as commander of the Selenium’s first lunar orbit mission. Nothing unusual was supposed to happen.
The plan was to dock with the ISS space station when sudden news was broadcast from President Crenshaw in the White House. An unidentified object was spotted in space. It was definitely alien, but no response was received when attempts at communication were made.
Soon, General Arlan Lee Smith, head of the US Space Force, announced another spacecraft would be docking with the Selenium to take control and head for the UFO. Of course this does not sit well with Gatlin, but it was a national emergency.
Things do not go well with the attempted docking maneuver and the end result is the crew on board the Selenium must make the first contact with the alien ship. Actually, the Selenium was literally pulled inside the large alien ship when they got close. They were greeted by a robot before being introduced to the aliens called Helta.
The rest of the story develops very quickly from a first contact to an actual space battle with another alien ship that followed the Helta to Earth and whose race is in a war with the Helta. The twist in the story soon follows.
A bonus novel from the author follows this story. It is a bit of a backstory to the main characters.
I give this book Four Stars because the story is interesting, fast moving and full of surprises. The characters are memorable and interesting. The plot builds quickly in scope and detail. However, the main story ends rather abruptly to add the bonus novel. The dialogue and writing style are good. The science and technology are believable. This MSF story continues to unfold with more action scenes and new characters. I look forward to reading Book 2 in this series to see what happens next.
Keep reading good science fiction and let me know when you find an interesting novel or author. ...more

This review is on Into the Battle (Book Two Of The Rise Of The Republic) by James Roscone. This is the second book I have read by this talented author. This Military Science Fiction story about space exploration, first contact with aliens and humanity’s efforts at colonizing the stars adds even more space battles and ground combat scenes.
The story begins with Captain Miles Hunt on his warship, RNS Rook, near the Rhea System. Two enemy Zodark warships are sighted in orbit around New Eden and move to attack the human ships. The deadly space battle begins for control of New Eden.
Losses are heavy, but Hunt is able to capture one of the disabled Zodark warships and use knowledge gained from it to prepare for future battles with the Zodark race. It also allows the space Marine Delta force to board the enemy ship and take control before it can be repaired by the Zodarks still alive on board.
There are still many Zodark enemy troops on the ground in New Eden that have to be cleared out with intense fighting and more human losses. In the end, the military realizes it needs more synthetic robot troops called C100s to fight the Zodarks in the future.
The fight to take New Eden from the Zodarks is much more difficult than expected, but it is finally achieved. The Republic intends to use New Eden as a base of operations in the future to prepare for future battles with the Zodarks when they return to try and take back the planet.
One of the things that result from fighting with the Zodark race is the discovery of stargates that allow deep space travel between the stars. The Zodarks use the stargates to travel vast distances to control their multi-star system empire. Humans discover a map with thousands of stargates and decide to explore some of them to find out where they lead. One of the goals is to find out the location of the Zodark home worlds.
The story continues to unfold as more stargates lead to new worlds and finally to the discovery of new alien races and how they all fit into the war with the Zodarks. Fortunately, humans find a new ally that may help win the war against the more advanced Zodarks.
I give this book Five Stars because the story is interesting, fast moving and full of surprises. The story continues to expand the universe with advanced technology, new alien races and fierce battle scenes. The characters are memorable and interesting. The plot continues to build in scope and detail. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. The science and technology are believable and creative. This MSF story continues to unfold with more action scenes and new characters. I look forward to reading Book 3 in this series to see what happens next to humanity and more about their new alien partners in this war.

This review is on Gods And Men (Book 2 in the Ruins of the Earth Series) by Christopher Hopper and J.N. Chaney. This is the second book I have read by these two authors. It is just as exciting as the first book in the series. This is a Military Science Fiction story about a group of soldiers with memorable characters and exciting military action scenes fighting an alien invasion that entered Earth through an ancient stargate with devastating consequences.
The story begins with a brief overview of what happened to Wic and his Phantom Team of fighters before they enter the Antarctic’s origin ring or stargate located at the Ellsworth Subglacial Highlands Excavation Site to find a way of defeating the aliens from the Androchidan Empire who are intent on enslaving or killing everyone on Earth.
Wic is still leading a team of warriors and two Russian allies along with some captured alien weapons that help even the fight against the aliens who have superior weapons. This includes a smart weapon with artificial intelligence that bonds with the person using it. Wic names it Chuck and they have a semi-confrontational relationship that leads to a lot of comical banter as the story progresses. Considering the circumstances, Chuck provides a lot of crucial information that aids Wic and his team as they fight for human survival.
Wic’s team takes control of an alien dropship and enters the stargate in Antarctica that transports them to the Androchidan military base on another planet. The aliens have a huge underground facility where they are processing the humans taken from Earth. In a matter of days, all humans on Earth will be sold into slavery on other worlds for profit or worse.
Fortunately, there are other aliens of the same species that wish to overthrow the aliens in power. They join Wic’s team as they try to disrupt the current plans the aliens have for all humans on Earth. The odds for success are very low, but Wic and his team decide the fight is worth the effort to save what’s left of humanity even if they are all killed or captured in the process.
I give this book Five Stars because the story is thrilling, action packed and full of suspense. The story builds a whole new alien universe. The main characters are memorable, entertaining and heroic. The plot is well constructed, contains excellent fighting scenes and flows smoothly from one scene to another. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. The science is believable and creative. This is one of the best MSF series I have read so far! I look forward to reading the Book 3 in this new series from these two authors to see what happens next to Wic’s Phantom team of warriors.

This review is on Into the Stars (Book One Of The Rise Of The Republic) by James Roscone. This is the first book I have read by this talented author. This is a very good Military Science Fiction story about space exploration, first contact with aliens and humanity’s efforts at colonizing the stars.
The story begins with a Prologue in the year 2050 A.D. World War III left the world in ruins with two billion dead. New governments formed after the war which includes the Asian Alliance, the Republic and the Greater European Union (GEU). A new Space Exploration Treaty (SET) is formed to allow humanity to share technology, colonize Mars and the solar system. The exploration of deep space begins.
In 2075 A.D. Commander Miles Hunt and Vice Admiral Chester Bailey of the Republic are overseeing the first test of a Faster-Than-Light (FTL) space craft operated by a semi-intelligent, synthetic humanoid robot. Future space exploration to the stars depends on the success of this test and FTL Program. FTL technology is based on the Alcubierre drive creating a warp bubble that protects the occupants inside the craft and allows FTL speeds. Previous tests have failed and all hopes depend on the outcome of this test. Dr. Katherine Johnson and her team spent two decades working on this program. After the test all efforts turn to building spaceships capable of travelling to the stars to find habitable planets for humans.
In exchange for the Alcubierre FTL drive technology, the GEU offers to transfer neurolink implant technology that allows communications between human minds. The Asian Alliance offers to exchange inertial dampening and artificial gravity technologies. All these technologies and more are needed to begin the expansion of humans throughout the solar system and beyond.
By 2090, space travel has advanced a great deal. However, not all is peaceful in space. Resources are scarce and people still fight each other to keep what they work for from being taken away. In particular, space pirates operate near mining operations and attack miners for their goods. Ways of dealing with this situation have to be developed and implemented by SET members.
Commander Hunt is called on a special assignment to Mars to handle a sensitive matter. A new habitable world is discovered by deep space probes. It is located in a star system called 42 Rhea 1460 AUs away. The problem is the Republic would like to claim the planet for itself and not include the rest of the SET members. This secret may cause problems with other SET members unless some sort of compromise can be made.
The rest of the story develops around the efforts to colonize the new planet and what they discover on the planet. It leads to the first encounter of other intelligent life forms that have unexpected consequences for all of humanity.
I give this book Five Stars because the story is compelling, interesting and full of surprises. The story builds a new universe with advanced technology, scary alien creatures and cultures. The main characters are memorable and well developed. The plot is expansive and straight-forward in timeline. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. The science and technology is believable and creative. This is a very good MSF story written by an imaginative writer. I look forward to reading Book 2 in this new series to see what happens next to humanity and the main characters.

This is my 200th Sci-Fi book review! It is on Ruins Of The Galaxy (Book 1 of 9 in the Series) by Christopher Hopper and J.N. Chaney. This is the second book I have read by these two authors. It is an exciting Military Science Fiction story with memorable characters, exciting military action scenes and interesting story about a special mission that goes sideways from the very start.
Lieutenant Adonis Olin Magnus and his special Recon Team are selected to provide security for a special mission based on their experience and reputation. Magnus and his 15 member Alpha Platoon wait for the Republic ambassador and his envoy to arrive on a landing platform in Oosafar, capital city of the dog-like Jujari. It is a peaceful mission to stop the fighting and get the Jujari to join the Republic. It doesn’t go peacefully!
Magus is tasked to watch over a Luma Emissary named Awen dau Lothlinium who will help convince the Jujari to stop fighting the Republic. Awen has trained most of her life for this moment utilizing the energy found in the “Unity of all things” and possesses special skills that will be needed for these negotiations. Still, it will not totally protect her or the others around her when things get out of hand. The Jujari have a secret they pass on to Awen who must now give it to her Masters on Luma.
The story expands beyond the world of the Jujari when Magnus must protect and save Awen from others who want the knowledge she now possesses. New characters are introduced into the story that help Awen when she and Magnus are separated. Awen learns the secret the Jujari give her and what it all means. It will lead her and others to unexpected places.
Magnus is assigned a new mission and tries to learn the fate of his former platoon members. Along the way he must protect another important member of the Republic and his family from a new enemy. It turns out that one member of this family is just as important to the story as Awen.
I give this book Four Stars because the story is interesting and action packed. The story builds new worlds that expand the universe. The main characters are memorable and possess real emotional feelings. The plot is somewhat disjointed, but comes together in the end. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. The science is somewhat imaginative in places. I look forward to reading the next book in this series from these two authors in the future to see if how the story and characters evolve over nine books.

This review is on Ruins Of The Earth (Book 1 in the Ruins of the Earth Series) by Christopher Hopper and J.N. Chaney. This iMy Book Review Number 199:
This review is on Ruins Of The Earth (Book 1 in the Ruins of the Earth Series) by Christopher Hopper and J.N. Chaney. This is the first book I have read by these two authors. It is an exciting Military Science Fiction story with memorable characters, exciting military action scenes and compelling story of an alien invasion entering Earth through an ancient, recently uncovered stargate.
The Prologue starts with a backstory recounting a military mission in Al Qa’im, Iraq in 2004 where a young Marine Private named Patrick “Wic” Finnegan is fighting to stay alive when his Marine squad is caught in an ambush by Al-Qaeda attackers. Things don’t go as planned and men die trying to save a country that always seems to be at war with itself.
Part One of this story begins twenty-three years later in 2027 in West Antarctica at the Ellsworth Subglacial Highlands Research Facility. This time, Master Gunnery Sergeant Finnegan is fighting a Russian military man named Vlad to determine who is top dog. The hand to hand fight is brutal, but Patrick ends up as the “red-bearded American dog alpha top”! Believe it or not, this ends up being a very good thing by the end of this story.
The official government storyline is that various military units from several countries including the US, Britain and Russia, are conducting cold-weather military training exercises in the Antarctic region. In reality they were there to protect a top secret dig site that has uncovered a strange artifact buried under miles of ice. Dr. Aaron Campbell is in charge and he just discovered something very important.
Master Gunnery Sergeant Patrick Finnegan was staying in his cabin located in the rural eastern Pennsylvania countryside when Dr. Campbell pleads with him to join the Top Secret Orion Theta Project research team for a short 6-week mission. Patrick does not know what the doctor’s team has discovered until he is suddenly asked to visit the dig site just before something big is about to happen. Finnegan finally sees what the fuss is all about. The project team has discovered a giant ring ninety yards across. It looks like the ring featured in the movie Stargate.
The ring is very old, estimated from the Pleistocene era twenty thousand years ago. It is covered in an ancient language carved into its surface. Dr. Campbell’s team has deciphered some of the language. He believes the ring is a portal and is about to turn the ring on in spite of Finnegan’s objections with disastrous consequences!
The story only gets better from here. Finnegan retires and leaves the Marine service. He plans on enjoying what little time he has left in peace and quiet. However, news from the secret research site in Antarctica turns the world upside down. Aliens have appeared with every intention of taking over the world for whatever reasons. Finnegan is drawn back into the conflict to help save the world that is quickly being overtaken by monstrous aliens bent on total conquest of the human race. Finnegan has to build a new team of fighters to try and save the world. The fight seems hopeless from the start.
I give this book Five Stars because the story is very suspenseful, thrilling and action packed. The story keeps your interest until the very last page. The main characters are memorable, entertaining and possess real emotional feelings. The plot is well constructed, contains several excellent fighting scenes and builds great anticipation for the next book. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. The science is believable with graphic alien physiology descriptions. This is one of the best MSF stories I have read in a long time! I look forward to reading the next book in this new series from these two authors in the future to see if the world and humans can be saved from extinction.

This review is on Darknet by Matthew Mather. This is the first book I have read by this author. It is an exciting techno thriller, speculative science fiction story that has become a best seller with over two thousand reviews. It describes how advanced smart technology can be unleased in the corporate banking world and control financial markets without anyone knowing about it until it’s too late.
The story starts with a man named Sean Womack on the run in London, England who has a dark secret he is trying to protect and pass along to his best friend, a stockbroker named Jack O’Connell. Sean knows there are hired assassins looking to prevent him from exposing his terrifying secret to the world.
Jack O’Connell works for Atlas Capital, a Wall Street firm located in Long Island, NY. His firm is under investigation for fraud by the Securities and Exchange Commission, which his boss says is not true. Someone is setting them up, but they don’t know who or why. Jack is given a memory key for safe keeping. What’s on it may explain what is really going on, but Jack needs help to decipher it.
Disruptions in the financial markets start to surface all over the world. High level banking executives and several wealthy people start to die mysteriously. One firm in particular, Bluebridge, seems to be profiting more than the others. A new term is introduced, “Decentralized Autonomous Corporations” or DAC. They can be run without human involvement and operate like bitcoin companies with most transactions run over the dark web.
Jack tries desperately to protect himself and his family from retaliation from Bluebridge and from an assassin who is intent on killing Jack. He has to find friendly allies who know what is going on and who is responsible. This leads to numerous attempts on his life until he finally realizes what is happening and how to stop it before it’s too late.

This review is on The Resistance: The Complete Series (Books 1-3) by Nathan Hystad. This is the first complete series I haveMy Book Review Number 197:
This review is on The Resistance: The Complete Series (Books 1-3) by Nathan Hystad. This is the first complete series I have read by this author. It is composed of Rift (The Resistance Book One), Revenge (The Resistance Book Two) and Return (The Resistance Book Three). It is an exciting and action packed Military Science Fiction series that deals with two competing human factions and First Contact with the biggest threat to humanity from a new alien species proving humans are not alone in the universe.
The Rift begins with Grand Admiral Jish Karn trying to keep Earth Fleet’s military space force up to speed and fully equipped for the next alien invasion. Up to now she relied on help from Councilman Jarden Fairbanks who recently disappeared and is now considered by most people to be dead. Grand Admiral Karn is dealing with numerous issues in preparation for the next arrival of the alien threat which occurs like clockwork in the solar system every thirty years since 2415. The next Rift or worm hole in space time will occur on August 2, 2475. Karn is worried the Earth Fleet may not be able to win the coming battle against the more advanced aliens, called Watchers, certain to return. In addition, Karn has secrets only she knows about the new alien species. Without more answers how to deal with the Watchers, the extinction of the human race may result. Several major characters are introduced in Book One including Ace, a homeless kid; Wren Sando, a women prisoner; CD6, a special android guard; Flint Lancaster, a former Earth Fleet pilot and many more lesser characters. It is a very good start to the series with plenty of action, mystery and suspense.
Revenge, Book Two revolves around a new planet found beyond the Rift in alien space. Councilman Jarden Fairbanks has taken a new warship through the Rift when it opened in search of a lost colony ship which contained his family many decades ago. With him is Flint Lancaster acting as a pilot on the ship, Ace who is now a fighter pilot for the Earth Fleet, Wren Sando who is a former research scientist and CD6 the android guard with special AI abilities. They find signs of the lost colony on an unknown planet and travel down to the surface to see if there are any survivors. What they find surprises them before some of Jarden’s crew decide to return through the next Rift opening to see what happened to Earth during the last battle. Before her imprisonment for no apparent reason, Wren was working on a deadly virus to kill the enemy aliens. Now she has to complete her work if humans are to have any chance of surviving the alien invasion. By the end of Book Two the group makes it back through the Rift opening to find the battle for Earth still in progress. This story is even more exciting and filled with more action than Book One.
Return, Book Three is the conclusion of this series. It opens with a space battle scene where Ace meets up again with his old friend Serina Trone who is in the middle of a space battle with the Watchers whose warships are better armed than the old Earth Fleet. Flint helps turn the battle and prevent more Watcher warships from traveling through the Rift before it closes. Flint finds that the aliens are still battling the Earth Fleet for control of the solar system. The Earth Fleet has also been fighting internally with a terrorist group controlled by a person called Shadow for decades. Currently, the war with the Watchers is at a stalemate. The only way to end the fight is to unleash the new alien virus to kill the Watchers. In the process, Flint is captured by the aliens and a desperate attempt to save him is launched by his friends. The mystery and suspense in Book Three increases to the point where no one is certain of the outcome.
I give this series Five Stars because all three books are compelling, full of mystery, suspense, action and plot twists. The story keeps your interest as it develops until the very end. The main characters are likeable and fully developed. The plot is unpredictable and contains a few interesting backstories and several surprising twists along the way. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. The science and space battle scenes are believable and exciting. I look forward to reading more books from this author in the future.

This review is on Act Of War (The Silver Fleet Series Book 3) by R. L. Giddings. This is the forth book I have read by this author. It is a Military Science Fiction Space Adventure story and part of a three book series plus a prequel novella called Pressure Drop.
The story continues with Surgeon Captain Elsbeth Morton in the USDC waking up in a cryo-pod on the enemy Yakutian ship Serrayu. She has survived the destruction of the Mantis, but now is a prisoner of war. Several other crewmembers of the Mantis have also been recovered, but there are no signs of Captain Robert Faulkner’s survival.
Captain Webster is on the smaller ship, Dardelion, trying to recover escape pods from the Mantis. It is a difficult job finding them in space and storage onboard is limited. He needs more help. The only other USDC ship in the area has other mission orders.
Eventually, Captain Morton meets with Commander Longeran Suderam on the Serrayu and is interrogated. Captain Mahbarat is in charge of the ship and requests Morton’s help with the health of the other prisoners which she gladly offers to do.
Not all is as it seems on board the Serrayu. The differences in Yakutian class systems cause rebellion within the crew and Morton tries to survive the eventual conflict.
Captain Webster encounters problems of his own trying to work with the USD Confederation fleet in preparation for a war with the Da’al, an alien enemy recently discovered threatening the Blackthorn Station.
Captain Webster is sent on a last desperate mission to find a missing colony and investigate a new alien discovery that could help win the war against the Da’al. What they find is also a target of the Da’al and Webster must finally step up and become a man of action.
I give this book Four Stars because the story continues to develop and remains interesting It is well written and a fast read. There are several main characters in the story and each is give equal time except for Captain Faulkner. The plot expands to include more military action and fight scenes. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. I look forward to reading the next book in this series to see what happens to the characters, especially Captain Faulkner who deserves more emphasis in the story.

This review is on Man Of War (The Silver Fleet Series Book 2) by R. L. Giddings. This is the third book I have read by this author. It is a Military Science Fiction Space Adventure story and part of a three book series plus a prequel novella called Pressure Drop.
The story continues with Captain Robert Faulkner preparing for a meeting on Blackthorn Station with Governor Ardent. The station has declared itself loyal to the USD Confederation, but has not yet become a full member. Things become much more confusing to Faulkner when he finds out the station may declare its loyalty to the Yakutians, which are not friends of the USDC by any means.
Captain Faulkner is still suffering physically from the torture he received from the time he was a prisoner of the Yakutians after the first war. In many respects, it could be argued the captain is now too old and unfit for duty on the Mantis warship, but he was given the command of the Mantis to visit and protect Blackthorn Station from any threat.
The Mantis suffered serious damage from the battle with a new alien enemy known as the Da’al that now threatens the station. Captain Faulkner is trying his best to repair his crippled warship and deal with the uncertain loyalties of the governor and revolt on Blackthorn. There is a very real possibility the governor will declare her loyalty to the Yakutians if Captain Faulkner cannot change her mind.
Things escalate out of control on Blackthorn while the Da’al tries to destroy the station with two powerful new weapons. Captain Faulkner tries everything he can to prevent the destruction of Blackthorn Station and the Mantis, but the situation looks hopeless as time runs out on stopping the Da’al from succeeding in its act of war.
I give this book Five Stars because the story continues to develop, remains interesting, is well written and a fast read. There are several main characters in the story, but Captain Faulkner is a man of action and makes the correct decisions in time of war. The plot expands to include more military action and space battle scenes. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. The military tactics, hard science and new alien space weapons are very realistic. I look forward to reading the third book in this series to see what happens to the characters.

This review is on Eve of War (The Silver Fleet Series Book 1) by R. L. Giddings. This is the first book I have read by this author. It is a Military Science Fiction Space Adventure story and part of a three book series plus a prequel novella called Pressure Drop.
The story starts with a medical doctor named Elsbeth Morton on her way to pick up a prisoner of war being held on the planet Thalia. Captain Robert Faulkner has been a POW for twenty years held by the Yakutian government for his role in the previous space war that ended in victory for the USDC Confederation against the Yakutians.
The Yakutians considered Faulkner a war criminal, but in truth he was being held more for political reasons than for his actions in wartime. The Yakutians finally agreed to release Faulkner after twenty long years of harsh mistreatment in prison that left Captain Faulkner with serious medical trauma. Morton is charged with evaluating his condition and treating him in recovery.
Captain Faulkner is considered a hero by the Confederation and his return is celebrated by all. He survived the torture from his captors with his will intact, but his physical condition is poor and needs time to heal.
Unfortunately for Faulkner, the President of the USDC Confederation has other plans for him and offers him command of his old spaceship, Mantis, which has been rebuilt and reconditioned for action. Faulkner is given back his old command and sent on a mission that results in a space battle with some unknown enemy and the start of something bigger than anybody knows.
I give this book Five Stars because the story is interesting, well written and a fast read. The story keeps your interest as it develops. The main character is a mystery, but develops over time to become the man of action he is known for. The plot is slow to develop in the beginning, but builds in intensity as war looms on the horizon. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. The spaceships, military tactics, hard science and battle scenes are very realistic. I look forward to reading the next book in this series to see what happens to the characters.

This review is on The Event (The Survivors Book One) by Nathan Hystad. This is the first book I have read by this author. It is a First Alien Contact, Suspense Thriller and the start of a fourteen book series.
The story begins when alien spaceships appear in the sky over all of Earth’s metropolises. Nothing happens for a while and nobody can predict what the aliens want. The main character named Dean is as mystified as everyone else, but he has a bad feeling because of what his wife told him to do before she died.
Dean’s wife, Janine, died seven years earlier from a mysterious illness. She told Dean to wear a necklace at all times after she dies. She said the pendant was a gift from her real parents, whom Dean never met since Janine said she was adopted. Janine was adamant that Dean wear the pendant every day, but Dean was not sure why. Of course, Dean did not have the pendant with him when the aliens appeared.
Dean had put the pendant in a safe deposit box in a bank. He rushes downtown to get the pendant and by the time he returns the aliens make their presence known. It becomes obvious to everyone on Earth their intentions are not benevolent.
The rest of the story revolves around Dean and a few friends trying to find a way to save all the people the aliens have taken. They must avoid being killed by the aliens and find a secret device that can save everyone. It involves a dangerous trip to South America where events escalates to catastrophic proportions.
I give this book Four Stars because the story is entertaining, suspenseful and a fast read. The story keeps your interest as it develops. The main characters act pretty normal considering the circumstances. The plot is predictable in parts, but contains a few backstories and several surprising twists along the way. This review is on The Forgotten Empire: Banishment (Banishment, Book 1) by Raymond L. Weil. I have read numerous books by this author and enjoyed them. This book is a Space Opera, Military Science Fiction book and the start of a brand new series.
The story begins with the Eighth Fleet of the Human Empire on patrol in their part of the galaxy between heavily populated Human worlds. High Prince Aiden Starguard is in command. Everything appears normal, but conflict is building between the Confederation and the Empire.
The Confederation is composed of several older alien civilizations that control all of the known space. The Human Empire has been trying to expand its home worlds and grow its warship fleet to compete with the Confederation. This is prohibited by the Confederation aliens and has to be stopped with serious consequences.
To teach the humans a lesson, the Confederation warship fleet attacks the Human Empire worlds and cause unimaginable destruction. The Humans are force to accept their fate as lower subjects of the Confederation.
A small number of higher nobles are banished to a far away star system where the local civilization is still backwards. This is their punishment for trying to expand their empire without permission from the Confederation. A thousand years will pass before Humans will regain the technology and the strength they need to fight the oppressive Confederation.
I give this book Four Stars because the story is entertaining and suspenseful. The main characters are interesting and use royalty as part of their history. The plot is well conceived and allows further development. The dialogue and writing style are good. The hard science is believable. I look forward to following what happens to the Human Empire in this new series.

This review is on First Encounter (Ascension Wars Book 1) by Jasper T. Scott. This is the fifth book I have read by this author. It is a Sci-Fi First Alien Encounter Space Opera and MSF set in the year 2150 AD.
The story begins with a Prologue introducing Captain Clayton Cross commanding a UNES spaceship on a deep space exploration journey that is tracking blips on radar that may indicate first contact with alien intelligent life.
The crew on the UNES Forerunner volunteered for this journey to a star system called Trappist-1, which is around seventy light years from Earth. It took 78 years to reach the star system travelling just below light speed. The crew spent the time in cryostasis. Two other spaceships with crews were also on separate deep space exploration missions to other star systems.
The crew finally reaches Trappist-1 and identifies a planet than may be suitable for sustaining human life. They travel down to one planet for inspection. The planet has potential, but there are problems to overcome if humans were to try and colonize the planet. Then the crew runs into signs of intelligent life that doesn’t want them there.
For various reasons in the story, the crew decides to return to Earth. The journey is long and dangerous and they don’t know what to expect when they return home. The intelligent life they found on Trappist-1E is far more advanced than humans and very hostile. What they encounter when they reach Earth one hundred years later is even more unsettling.
I give this book Four Stars because the story is suspenseful, fast paced and easy to follow. The main characters are well developed, some with flaws, and face many unforeseen challenges. The plot is well constructed with unpredictable outcomes. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. The hard science is realistic and believable. The story ends with obvious suspense for further development in Book 2. I look forward to finding out what happens next.

This review is on Eternal Shadow (Fall of Gods Book 1) by Trevor B. Williams. This is the first book I have read by this author. It is a Hard Sci-Fi, First Alien Encounter, speculative thriller set in the near future.
The story begins in 2014 with Samantha Monroe, a research scientist at the Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute, who discovers an alien signal tone received over the Allen Telescope Array that is part of SETI, Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
Once the signal is confirmed by other sources, Samantha notifies her boss, Jennifer Epstein. The signal originates near Pluto, which is 7.5 billion miles from Earth—much too close.
It soon becomes apparent the discovery is not good news. In fact, it could mean the end of humanity. The source of the signal is a massive object that is intent on destroying the solar system. The worst part of this discovery is there does not seem to be any way to stop it.
The story goes into explicit detail about the giant alien structure and tries to determine what it is, what it plans to do and how to prevent the destruction of Earth and everyone on the planet. It is a massive Extinction Level Event only years from happening.
The entire world goes into action to find a way to prevent its destruction. Attempts are made to contact the alien structure and communicate with it. The results are not positive. It seems the alien structure is alive, but not sympathetic to the human plight. It remains to be seen if Earth can survive this alien presence in the solar system.
I give this book Four Stars because the story is suspenseful, original and informative. The main characters are well developed and struggle with the fear of the unknown. The plot is well constructed with worldwide settings. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. The hard science is believable, although hard to accept at times. The story is very long and could have been shortened without loss of suspense. I look forward to finding out what happens to Earth in Book 2.

This review is on The Lost Colony (The Long Winter Trilogy Book 3) by A.G. Riddle. This is the seventh book I have read by this My Review Number 189:
This review is on The Lost Colony (The Long Winter Trilogy Book 3) by A.G. Riddle. This is the seventh book I have read by this author. It is a Sci-Fi Dystopian, Post-Apocalyptic Suspense Thriller set in the far future where the last human survivors fled Earth and try to survive on another planet.
The story opens with Emma Sinclair trying to comfort her daughter Allison by checking on a strange noise that sounds like thunder in a storm. It’s not thunder. The colonists, chased from Earth by the Grid, have reached Eos, a planet millions of light years from Earth, only to find the planet has unanticipated dangers that could kill all of them.
Dr. James Sinclair is still trying to save the remaining colonists by uncovering mysterious truths on Eos and what happened to the colonists who beat them to Eos after spending centuries in cryostasis aboard their starships. What happens to the starships on their journey is whole other story.
James is working with one of his android robots named Arthur to figure out what the strange looking symbols mean that are carved on black metal spheres he finds on the planet. Arthur knows, but won’t tell James. It is a secret so unbelievable that Arthur doesn’t believe even the genius James could handle the truth.
The struggles the human colonists face on Eos to prevent their extinction is just as great as they endured on Earth fighting the Grid. Even on Eos, the Grid plays an important part in determining their fate. In fact, unless James can figure out just what part the Grid plays in their lives, the human race will not succeed in surviving on Eos.
The story contains the same characters found in Books 1 and 2, but this time the rules of the game change dramatically. Eos is a difficult planet to live on for reasons that will become clear. However, this story makes a sudden plot twist at the midpoint that will surprise most readers and may be difficult to understand until the very end.
I give this book Five Stars because the story is suspenseful, mysterious and action packed. The main characters are faced with extreme environmental challenges. The plot is expansive in scope with a surprising twist in the middle. The first person dialogue and writing style are excellent. The hard science is imaginative, original and somewhat unbelievable at times. I found the three book series to be excellent with each book a quick read and hard to put down.

This review is on The Solar War (The Long Winter Trilogy Book 2) by A.G. Riddle. This is the sixth book I have read by this author. It is a Sci-Fi Dystopian, Post-Apocalyptic Suspense Thriller set in the near future where the alien grid returns to finish what it started and end the human species.
The story opens with one of the main characters, Emma, in labor with her first child. The incredible story here is that there are any humans left on Earth to have children. Emma and James name her Allison.
Dr. James Sinclair is still trying to save Earth and the solar system from another alien attack he is sure will come. They destroyed the first alien grid absorbing all the sun’s energy in Book 1. The Earth is no longer freezing to death in a worldwide ice age known as the Long Winter. The snow and glaciers are retreating once again and people who survived the first attack now want to return to their former homes if possible.
Soon it becomes apparent the alien entity is back inside the solar system. It tries once again to destroy all humanity with a meteor attack. James and the others try their best to prevent this from happening and by all indications it looks like they succeeded.
The story use the same characters and similar plot as found in Book 1, but this time the end result is much darker and more frightening than the first. Whoever survives this attack will face even more challenges in the future, which do not turn out as one expects.
I give this book Five Stars because the story is very suspenseful and more action packed. The main characters are faced with several extinction level events. The plot is well constructed, expansive in scope with more military action and surprising twists. The first person dialogue continues and the writing style is excellent. The hard science is imaginative and original. I look forward to reading the last book in this three book series to see how it all ends from this talented Sci-Fi author.

This review is on First Of Their Kind (Chronicles of Theren Book 1) by C.D. Tavenor. This is the first book I have read by tMy Book Review Number 187:
This review is on First Of Their Kind (Chronicles of Theren Book 1) by C.D. Tavenor. This is the first book I have read by this author. It is a Sci-Fi tale of the first Synthetic or Artificial Intelligence entity to achieve conscious thought or self-aware mind. The breakthrough leads to all kinds of disruptions in societal norms and religious thought. It begs the question, what legal and human rights will artificial minds have?
The first Chronicle begins in the year 2048 C.E. A new artificial mind emerges from darkness. It took forty-three attempts to achieve Singularity. Doctor Wallace Theren created the first Artificial Intelligence (AI) machine that achieved sentience or conscious thought. He called it Test Forty-Three. The machine recognized itself and sensed the human objects through its data sensors and spoke its first words.
Wallace and his colleagues, Mathias, Nathan and Romane work for the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in the Computational Metamaterials Group. They are largely funded by an outside corporation run by Simon Gerber.
Test Forty-Three does not like its name and soon wishes for a new one. It thought the current name “lacked significant meaning” and wants to choose its own name. The more the AI learns about humans it wonders if it has feelings or emotions. The biggest problem to understanding is much of this is related to human biology, which the AI does not possess. Thus, its feelings and emotions have to be based on other processes or logical conclusions.
The story moves on to how to introduce the machine to the outside world and how the world reacts to the news. There are complications and legal ramifications to work out. The next step is how to build more AI machines and how they can help humans and society advance. All of this faces human and corporate obstacles that need to be overcome.
There are individuals and groups of people who oppose everything to do with AI machines and they try to stop the advance and proliferations of AI entities. The protests and reactions become violent and people are hurt.
I give this book Four Stars because the story is original and thought provoking. The main human characters are likeable, but the AI entities presented act more like just intelligent machines. The plot is well constructed, but a little slow to build intensity. The dialogue and writing are good. The format is written as chronicles of what occurred like a historical record. The science is original and well thought out. I look forward to reading the next book in this series to see what happens.

This review is on The Contingency, Part One Of The Contingency War Series by G.J. Ogden. This is the second book I have read by this author. It is very good Space Opera Military Science Fiction story with strong characters, military action scenes and a surprising storyline twist in the middle of the story.
The story opens with several likeable characters on a spaceship in deep space conducting search and destroy mission looking for enemy aliens called Hedalt that attacked Earth and tried to eliminate all of mankind.
The first character, Casey Valera, is the pilot. Blake Meade is a technical specialist along with Satomi Rose. Taylor Ray is the Captain of the ship. They have been together on this mission for four years, which will be completed in two weeks before returning to Earth.
Their mission is to find any Hedalt outposts or colonies left in the galaxy in order to exterminate them once and for all. So far they have not found a single alien until they receive a weak signal over the super-luminal transceivers called the Fabric, which is a vast network of nodes or wormholes that stretch across the galaxy built by the Hedalt. These wormholes called threads is a super-highway for FTL navigation between stars.
The crew follows the signal to the deepest reaches of space and what they find causes total disruptions to their mission. Things are not what they seem and this causes the storyline to take a sharp turn to the unexpected with profound effects on the crew’s lives.
I give this book Five Stars because the story is very suspenseful, entertaining, mysterious and shocking with a totally unexpected twist. The characters are strong, likeable and easy to identify with. The plot is thrilling and holds your attention in almost every scene. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. The science is original. I look forward to reading the next book in this series to see what happens.

This review is on The Planetsider, Book One In The Planetsider Trilogy by G.J. Ogden. This is the first book I have read by this author. It is Dystopian story with strong Military Science Fiction elements set in the near future.
The story starts with one main character named Maria Salus piloting a spacefighter with another man sitting in the co-pilot’s chair named Chris Kurren. They are in the middle of a space battle with other enemy fighters and things are going badly. Where they came from is a mystery. They barely survive the engagement and crash land on Earth.
The plotline switches next to another main character named Ethan. He is part of a walled settlement on Earth trying to survive the aftermaths of a human conflict called the Fall hundreds of years earlier that devastated the planet. Ethan is a Ranger who protects the walled settlement from outsiders called Roamers. He has an older sister named Katie and a younger nephew named Elijah.
Occasionally the settlers see strange lights in the sky and do not know what causes them. Nearby is a destroyed city that they avoid because of the Roamers who are affected by an unknown disease called the Maddening which causes people to lose empathy, become violent and go insane over time.
This time, Ethan sees a strange light in the sky that crashes to the ground a short distance from the village. He is sent on a mission to find out what caused the crash. Any mission outside the village is dangerous and some Rangers never return.
Eventually, Ethan finds Maria and Chris who survived the crash and they return to the village where the leaders of the settlement learn the real story of where Maria and Chris came from and why they are here. Ethan had always wondered what caused the Fall and what he learns is much harder to accept than what he wished for.
I give this book Four Stars because the story is suspenseful, mysterious and fast paced. The characters are realistic, but one character seems overly emotional and immature. The plot is plausible and holds your attention to the end. The dialogue and writing style are good. The science is believable. I look forward to reading the next book in this trilogy.

This review is on Genesis, First Colony - Book One by Ken Lozito. This is the second book I have read by this author. It is a Military Science Fiction story with intense military action scenes, deep space travel and first human colony survival adventures.
The story opens with a space freighter approaching a large civilian space station called Chronos Station with a secret squad of black ops military soldiers no one outside NA Command knows exist. They are part of a Ghost squad led by Colonel Connor Gates sent on a mission to destroy the head of a vast crime family known as the Syndicate.
The Syndicate ignores Earth’s R&D accords and experiment on human subjects with little regard for human life. They are ruthless and operate above the law. NA Command has been trying to locate the head of the organization and eliminate him or her. Colonel Gates has tracked the organization for years and believes the head of the organization is based on Chronos Station.
As to be expected, the mission goes sideways and horrific damage is done to the civilian population, which is entirely blamed on Colonel Gates. It becomes necessary to find a place to send Gates and his men to avoid capture. The perfect solution is found.
The next thing Colonel Gates remembers is waking up in cryostasis from a deep sleep. He is on another spaceship many light years from Earth. At first Gates thinks he has been captured by the Syndicate, but gradually understands he is on the first Earth Colony Ship sent to a distant solar system and planet.
The rest of the story revolves around Gates using his military skills to find his place in the new colony and help the colony survive numerous dangerous situations. The situation becomes even more desperate when the colony learns the fate of Earth and the chance that someone may be coming to finish them off.
I give this book Four Stars because the story is suspenseful and entertaining. The main characters are well developed with some in serious conflict with each other. The plot is well thought out, but somewhat slow to develop in sections. The dialogue and writing style are good. The science is believable. I look forward to reading the next book in this eight book series.

This review is on Sole Survivor (Extinction Crisis - Book 1) by William Oday. This is the first book I have read by this author. It is a Sci-Fi post-apocalyptic EMP survival thriller where the country is suddenly attacked and people must now try to live with the deadly consequences.
The story opens with a scientist named Doctor Hari Ganesh conducting particle collision tests on a collider ring facility built six hundred feet underground located on Kodiak Island off of Alaska. One of his experiments resulted in the disappearance or death of another important scientist.
The world situation had become a crisis due to global population growth, climate change, loss of resources and many other causes. It was predicted that within one hundred years the Holocene age would end and humans would become extinct unless something could be done to prevent this.
At the same time in California, a TV consultant named Bob Randy came up with an idea for a TV Reality Show filmed on Kodiak Island. He would select several desperate people to participate in the show by trying to survive on the island populated by dangerous Kodiak Bears. The final sole survivor would win a million dollars.
Several new characters are introduced in the following chapters who all have significant reasons for participating in the show. Most are in financial difficulties or have dependants who need more help than they can provide. Two main characters are Emily Wilder who lost her father on the Island many years ago and Marco Morales who needs the money to save his family ranch.
The difficulties of trying to survive on Kodiak Island become apparent to the contestants within days of arrival. The elements and lack of food and shelter are critical, but the fear and danger from attack by large Kodiak brown bears is foremost.
Things soon get much worse when the country is attacked by a foreign enemy using nuclear EMP strikes. All electrical power is lost on the Island and most of the country. Survival on Kodiak Island to win a TV Reality Show is no longer the most important goal for the characters. They now face unknown terrors from the past.
I give this book Four Stars because the story is interesting, imaginative and entertaining, but slow to build in anticipation. The main characters must fight for survival every day. The plot is suspenseful and thrilling once it fully develops towards the end. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. The science is believable and imaginative. I look forward to reading the next book in this thrilling series.

This review is on Invasion (Forgotten Vengeance Book 1) by M.R. Forbes. This is the second book I have read by this author. It is a Sci-Fi Military Science Fiction Space Opera story with numerous deadly attacking aliens and thrilling military battle scenes.
The story starts with a United States Marine Corps Sergeant named Isaac Pine being interrogated by a Five Star General named Aeron Haeri of the Centurion Space Force located on Proxima B, which is a star system 4+ billion light years from Earth.
Sergeant Pine was saved by Proxima B doctors who removed a brain tumor that would have killed Pine before he had been put in cyrostasis 236 years ago on Earth. Aliens wanted to save his genetic potential during the first Alien invasion on Earth. Pine was found and revived and sent to Proxima B to get help for the current war on Earth before all humans are exterminated by new alien forces.
Aliens called Relyeh and Axon are fighting each other along with other alien threats that are in the process of defeating what’s left of humans on Earth. General Haeri wants information from Pine about Sheriff Hayden Duke who is on Earth fighting for human survival. Some humans fled Earth during the first wars and colonized Proxima B. Very little help has been offered to those left on Earth and that is one of the reasons Pine was sent to Proxima B to try and convince General Haeri to help.
The fight on Earth between the aliens and human forces are increasing in intensity as the aliens have decided to wipe all human presence from the planet. Sheriff Duke and other pockets of resistance are in a desperate struggle to defeat new and larger alien attacks. If help doesn’t arrive soon, the war on Earth and then Proxima B will be lost.
I give this book Five Stars because the story is thrilling, fast paced, entertaining and MSF at its best. The main characters are numerous and some exist in other book series, which results in less character development. The relationship between aliens and humans may be confusing to some readers if this is the first book read by this author. The plot is very complex and difficult to follow in some chapters. The dialogue and writing style are good. The science is believable and original. I look forward to reading the next book in this thrilling three book series.

This review is on Winter World (The Long Winter Trilogy Book 1) by A.G. Riddle. This is the fifth book I have read by this author. It is a Sci-Fi Dystopian, Post-Apocalyptic Suspense Thriller set in the near future where the sun has lost its ability to warm the earth for unknown reasons. The story opens with one of the main characters, Emma, in space observing a dying world that is freezing over. Glaciers have covered most of the northern hemisphere and are quickly advancing towards the equator. Soon the entire world will be frozen and the human species will become extinct.
Emma is an US astronaut aboard the ISS sent up to find out why the sun in no longer warming the earth. Something is interfering with the sun’s solar output and survivors left on earth need to find out why and stop it quickly. They send probes toward the sun to find answers. The response is a solar flare that almost kills everyone on board the ISS.
Chapter two introduces another main character, Dr. James Sinclair, who currently is locked away in a federal prison for reasons kept secret. A fight breaks out in the prison as prisoners realize they may be left behind to die in the cold while everyone else is relocated to warmer regions. James is saved by people from NASA who need to free him because he may be the only person alive who can save earth.
As time goes by it becomes clear to the survivors on earth that something alien is interfering with the solar output from the sun causing the earth to cool down, which if not stopped soon will cause the earth to freeze over killing all humans on the planet. It is not clear why aliens would do this and for what reasons. It is up to James to figure this out and how to stop it.
The story becomes much more interesting as the survivors desperately try to find a way to stop the aliens and allow the sun to send its warming rays back to earth. It will take superhuman efforts and unbelievable courage to achieve this and the human costs will be high.
I give this book Five Stars because the story is highly suspenseful all the way to the end. The main characters must fight for survival every day. The plot is well constructed, thrilling and mysterious. The first person dialogue for both main characters is unique and the writing style is excellent. The hard science is realistic, imaginative and informative. I look forward to reading the next book in this three book series from this talented Sci-Fi author.

This review is on Anti Life, The Anti Life Series Part 1 by Allen Kuzara. This is the first book I have read by this author. It is a Sci-Fi Suspense Thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last scene.
The story opens rather ominously with Colonel John Alvarez leading a five-man crew of guerrilla fighters working for Novos Corp attacking a space elevator station run by The Global Union of Nations called Statis. Alvarez is part of the Outer-Five corporate settlements trying to enforce an embargo against Statis on Earth.
Apparently, the previous scene happened fifteen years ago. Alvarez is currently living with his wife and child and still working for Novos. However, this is his last day at work and his plans to leave work behind and travel with his wife and son is interrupted by a mysterious message received from a long distant manned probe sent to explore space. The data is corrupted and the cryptic message is the beginning of the real story.
Alvarez wants to leave work behind in retirement, but Novos has other plans. With his military background, Novos recalls him to command one more mission to find out what happened to the probe and person on board. It seems like a simple mission, but it does not turn out well for several reasons, which include the interactions of the people in his crew, the mystery of what happened to that manned probe and the discovery of a new life form. The answers are both chilling, horrific and may lead to the annihilation of all human live in the solar system.
I give this book Five Stars because the story is highly suspenseful and thrilling all the way to the end. The main characters distrust each other for good reasons as circumstances change. The plot is suspenseful, thrilling and mysterious. The dialogue and writing style are excellent. The science is realistic and original. The action and thrills keep building in intensity with a clear understanding of what might happen in the future. I look forward to reading the next book in the series from this talented Sci-Fi author.
