The first time this book was recommended to me, I had very little interest in it. I had (and still HAVE) a to-read list that is just… HUGE and I haven’t even made a dent in it despite having five reviews to write at the moment. Then I kept hearing about it. The more it was recommended, the more curious I became. What in the world could be so interesting about another ‘Bubble Boy’ type of novel? Nothing that I could think of.
I bit the bullet and purchased it on Amazon in paperback in February. You can check it out here (aff link). It was reasonably priced for if I didn’t love it, a perfect price for if I did end up liking it. As soon as it arrived I dove in. I was shocked at the fact that I could not put it down.
From the very beginning it is gripping. You find yourself relating to someone that you (or at least I don’t) have anything in common with. You sympathize with her and you find yourself rooting for her in every challenge and obstacle she comes to face. There were moments in this book that left me in tears, moments that had me laughing so hard I ended up with stomach aches, and there were moments that left me with a flock of butterflies flapping around in my stomach.
This book has made it’s way to my favorites list. It has quiet a few surprises and twist in it. I keeps you on the edge of your seat and guessing all the way up and until the end. I have very little faith that the movie will be anywhere near as good as a book. I’ll find that out once it lands on DVD, if you go to the theater to see it AND you have read the novel as well – please let me know how they compare.

Big Little Lies is one of those novels that never crossed by path. Not really too sure why, as it is in my favorite genres. I was browsing the web and an advertisement for HBO’s news series Little Big Lies came on. Truthfully, I am not to sure if it was the advertisement itself or the fact that it starred Reese Witherspoon that pulled me in. I did my research, stumbled across the book, accidentally found the book inside my local Walmart and snatched it up before I could think twice about it.
The Actual Review
It started out kind of slow for me, but I found that it picked up quickly. The writing style is very unique, I’ve never really seen anything like it before. It flashes back and forth from the current time to the past with such ease, an added plus is that it is very obvious which you are currently in. It is a huge mystery that left me itching to figure out who did it and what exactly happened. It takes the entire novel to unravel the mystery.
The best part for me about this novel is that usually I can guess and be right, but this time I was one hundred percent wrong. I gasp and cried out when I got to the ending and it left me wanting so much more! I am almost positive there won’t be a sequel, but I would snatch it up in a second if it came along. I did binge the HBO series as well, but this is not a review for the TV show. That may be coming soon though.
This book earned a well deserved 5 out of 5 stars and has a place on my favorite books shelf. I am loving her writing style and have since read one of her other books and started on a third! Sandra....more

Upon first glance, I always judge a book by its cover. This rings more true for ebooks than it does physical copies. With a physical copy, I still may have picked this book up and read the back. With ebooks, I just don’t often click the cover to read the description. This book has taught me that I need to start clicking those covers. It was not what I expected, but in the best kind of way. Based on the cover, I expected it to be your typical, raunchy, paranormal romance. I do not like that type of story at all. As soon as I opened this book, I was addicted.
The action starts from the very first page. It literally starts happening in the first chapter and it only excels from there. Normally, this would be a good thing for me, but at the beginning of the book it annoyed me a little and almost had me sitting it down. Only the writing was good, the plot was good, and I was curious for answers. This is still a paranormal romance novel, however it has very few sex scenes and the ones that do occur are not very graphic and are written in a very tasteful way.
Plot Twist Galore!
One of the things I was not expecting was the many plot twist, there were at least three that had me going ‘NO WAY!’ and kept me going despite the fact that I knew I desperately needed to go to bed. I don’t want to give away many spoilers, but honestly – a good bit of the twist I did not see coming. There are two bonus chapters at the end, they are called bonus chapters – this isn’t a name I have given them. They were not what I expected to be included in this book, I figured it would come in book two. Based on how fast paced this novel is from the beginning though, I am not too surprised. There is also an alternative ending provided, which leaves you at a huge cliff hanger and wanting to dive right into book number two. I almost wish I had stopped reading after bonus chapter number two.
The only issue I really had with this book is I felt it was rushed. Not like in a the writing wasn’t as good as it could have been way, but I feel like the character’s could have been developed a little deeper and the plot could have been slowed down (Again, the two bonus chapters felt like they should have been a preview of the next book. Instead it felt like it was a ‘let’s skip a bit of time so I can start the next book off a good bit of a bit into the future’). I still have a lot of questions about the characters that I may never know the answers to. [One such example: Why couldn’t her adoptive pack ‘smell’ she wasn’t one of ‘them’?] The blurb that goes with this book also isn’t really correct, it lays a basic outline, but some of the things mentioned in the blurb happen way different in the real story.
It was still a really good read and I cannot wait to dive into book number two! Alena Des does have some real talent and potential. This book sucked me in, kept my attention, and I will be reading the next books in the series. A well-earned 3.5 out of 5 stars....more
