I read and enjoyed Amina's Voice a few years ago so I was excited to see this book up for review. This book takes place soon after the first with Amina spending the summer with her family in Pakistan. When she gets back to school she deals with new teachers, new friends, new clubs, and kids that think that there is nothing great about where she is from.
I really enjoyed this book and seeing how Amina grows even more from the first book, seeing how she works to show the kids in her class that there is more to Pakistan than what they see in the news, how she grows in her friendships and confidence, and how she continues to learn more about herself. This was a really great book....more

If this book doesn't prove the cutthroat world of applying to colleges, I don't think anything else would. This book centers around three sets of mothers and daughters, all of whom attend a prestigious private school that prides itself on getting students into the Ivy League Plus schools and these mothers will stop at nothing to make sure that happens. The problem is that they all want their daughters to go to Stanford, and Stanford has announced they are only taking one more student from the school and none of them will stop until those results are announced. However, there are secrets abounding and of course they are about to come out.
This book was so interesting. I found that I was immediately intrigued by the concept and how all of the relationships between the mothers went both with each other and with their daughters. The book is full of drama, secrets, sabotage, and makes me so glad that this wasn't my experience. ...more

This book reminded me of another book that I read this year, "The Love Study" in that it is involving one character going through a dating competition, but instead falling in love with one of the people in the competition, someone else catches their eye.
I enjoyed the main characters Everly and Chris and liked how the book alternated between the two characters as it helped to share both of their stories. I also liked the conflict between Chris and his dad and the interesting element that it added to the story.
However there was almost too much miscommunication between the two main characters and that I didn't like.
Overall this was a cute story and I love how it all ended up....more

It took me a little bit to get into this book, but once I did it was very intriguing. In this retelling of Jane Eyre we find Jane, a broke dog-walker and thief. When she meets Eddie she is instantly drawn in and not bothered that his wife disappeared only a year ago.
Through the tale of both Jane and Bea we start to weave together a story that is haunting, mysterious, and interesting. I flew through this book, but in a way that I felt like I was missing things and was wanting more of something.

This is a fun, colourful, and important book to help introduce kids to the Stonewall Riots in an age appropriate way and to the great people of Sylvia and Marsha.
The text of this book is simple and while some of the harshness of the real Stonewall Riots is glossed over since the book is a picture book that isn't a bad thing. The most important parts are there.
I think this book really shines in the additional information at the back where there is more information on the Stonewall Riots, how LGBTQ+ rights have changed and grown because of Sylvia and Marsha, as well as discussion questions, activities, and more....more

This book centres around a few families living in New York that are all connected through friendships, relationships, school, and general proximity and follows them through messy relationships and drama. The biggest problem with this book was that I couldn't connect to any of the characters. I felt like the adults acted like teenagers and there was no one that I was rooting for.

This was a very interesting look into the lives of those that have retreated from society, both religiously and not, and the various reasons behind them. The author journeyed to many of the people that she writes about, taking on their steps, daily routines, and stories.
This book wasn't exactly what I expected it to be, but it was still interesting in the ways that it talked about how we interact with society, how we view those who step away from it, and how we tell the stories of the world....more

However everything changed on the trip two years ago to Croatia and they haven't really spoken since. When Poppy convinces Alex to take one last vacation together she has one more chance to make everything right again, but can one trip fix everything?
This book was sweet, emotional, and took me on such a journey of these friends. I loved how it went back and forth from This Summer to summer's past and how you slowly had the past filled in for you. I don't think a Romance book has ever made me feel so warm and cozy as this one. I love the setting being at a family friend's cabin and it taking place at Christmas. I also like the little bit of magical realism with a time loop that the main character gets stuck in.
Mae isn't super happy with how her life is going, but the one thing that always makes her happy is heading to the Utah cabin with all of her favourite people. including Andrew who she has been in love with for 13 years. But then the trip goes nothing like she hopes it would and as she drives away she wishes to the Universe to show her what would make her happy.
Then she wakes up back on the way to the cabin before the trip even starts. The Universe has given her a do-over (and maybe another and another) and Mae has to figure out how to make everything right again and perhaps fall in love in the meantime.
This book was so cute, full of holiday cheer, and full of cozy feelings. I read it curled up next to the fire and squealed multiple times because of pure joy and happiness.

I love a good romance book and I think this is the first romance book that I have read that features a nonbinary character which was really great to see and I think the author did a great job at creating a realistic relationship that many people can connect to.
This book stars Drew, someone who has commitment issues (in both work and relationships) and Sidney, who hosts a YouTube dating show. When Drew goes on Sidney's show to go on a variety of dates he realizes that Sidney is who he actually wants to be with.
I enjoyed this book, but I did feel like the relationship was established very quickly and wish that there was a bit more of a build up. Sidney, as a nonbinary character was written well and I really liked them as a character (more than Drew). I wish there may have been more going on throughout the book, but the book is very character driven and overall I really enjoyed it....more

The last 6 months have been an emotional roller coaster. We have experience corporate loss, grief, isolation, but also connectedness, care, and love. This book, filled with poetry, conversations, and essays shows the experiences of just a few, but the emotions can connect many.
It may be weird to recommend a book about a pandemic that is still very much going on and there may be many that won't be able to pick up this book for many years, if not ever, but this book does what the title says, it shows that we are "Alone Together."
Through the messages of grief, connectedness, loneliness, and care those early weeks and months are shared in poignant words. Not only that, but this book is raising money for independent book stores, a industry that like many, has been hit extremely hard in the past few months.

This book is the conclusion to the football-centric romance series that I have read books 1 and 2 of and enjoyed (despite not enjoying football), however I think there was almost too much in this book for it to hit all of its marks. Between the important racial and social justice issues and the enemies to lovers romance there was a lot to pack in a small book.
As a Romance book it is needed for the book to all wrap up nicely but it is hard to imagine all of the racial issues wrapping up as nicely as it did in the book and since the romance happened so late in the book the conflict and resolution also happened very quickly.
I did really like both of the main characters, Quintin and Elliot and felt like they worked together well and liked how they hated each other at first and then grew to respect and love each other.

This book made me think a lot; about gender, about how we look at boys and girls different from the moment that they are born, and about how I want to raise my future children.
This book is the story of Kyl and Brent as they decided to raise their child gender neutral. This meant that no one besides doctors and those taking care of Zoomer new the biological sex of their child, they reject all labels of gender, and are waiting for Zoomer's decision on their own gender (or lack if that is what they prefer).
This book goes through their journey from Kyl's upbringing, their early marriage, decision to have a child (and raise them genderless), and the process of pregnancy, birth, and the first three years of Zommer's life. Now Kyl is writing from a privileged space, and one where most of the family, doctors, and friends around this family are very accepting, but Kyl admits to this as well.
I really enjoyed this book. I found it very well written and a story that is different from any that I have read before. It made me think about why the first thing we as a pregnant woman is if it is a boy or a girl, and why we separate genders for anything and everything. I think this is an eye-opening book, and one that will start a lot of conversations....more

Their love story was very sweet and I felt like their emotions were real.
I wish their rivalry went on for a bit longer as I felt like they were together much quicker than I was expecting and then there was quite a bit of time without much action. However in the last little bit of the novel there were a whole bunch of problems that came all at once.
