It was mentioned back in my October TBR post though I just finally read it as a coursebook for a gender, sexuality, and women’s studies class that I am taking this semester!
Overall, I really enjoyed Cemetery Boys! I did find it to be a little predictable and had some issues with the writing which is why I gave it 4 stars. However, it was fast-paced (takes place over 3 days from Yadriel summoning Julian to Dia de Los Muertos), important, and an atmospheric read. I would recommend picking it up if you are looking for a fun, diverse, magical realism/fantasy read. I hope more people continue to pick up Cemetery Boys; I couldn’t help but imagine how great it would be as an animated movie!

I wasn’t sure what to expect because I was reading it for my English class where I didn’t finish the last book, but this story is one you can devour in only a few sittings. The themes in this book reminded me a lot of others I have read which hit me hard, both The Outsiders and The Hate U Give. (Friendship, family, music, race, police brutality, violence) The way the narrative jumps from present to past chapters really makes for a unique experience and I want to go back and reread parts, now knowing what I do about the ending. It was short, but no less impactful. I definitely think more people should give Brother a read. ...more

Now here I will ramble about how I found out about Good Omens and how much I love Aziraphale and Crowley instead of working on my university writing assignments. . . I watched the show on Amazon Prime a few weeks ago in the summer and bought a copy of the book as soon as I could at a little bookshop while on vacation. (Then spent the rest of my downtime on said vacation reading) I loved reading it and catching background info that I missed or that was not revealed while watching the show. (Dog, Anathema thinking they're an old married couple, why the Bentley plays only Queen..) It was a bit different for me since I am usually a fan of the book first before watching the show or movie, but in this case, I hadn't actually heard of the book before seeing my Tumblr explode with posts about an angel and his demon bf (played by doctor who!?). Anyway, I was intrigued and immediately started watching the show when I heard my brother convinced our mom to start our prime subscription again. I loved the show, and could only imagine how thrilling it must be to book fans to watch since so many lines are taken straight out of the book -and boy do they do great on screen. Here is one of my fave moments/Aziraphale lines that made me laugh so hard (especially thinking of how he delivers it in the show): (Crowley): "It wouldn't work. He's an Antichrist! . . . Suspicion will slide off him like, like . . . whatever it is water slides off of," he finished lamely. "Got any better ideas? Got one single better idea?" said Aziraphale. We stan (1) sassy angel :')
I did miss a few things from the ending which are present in the show (which is not the book's fault this is me comparing them) but Adam's confrontation felt a little anti-climatic w/o Satan actually arriving... and no Aziraphale and Crowley switching before being taken back to Heaven/Hell to be punished, especially since throughout the book it hints that they will be in Big trouble. Otherwise adaptation wise, it is pretty spot-on (yay to author's writing the scripts) and any changes from the book are so effortless that they don't affect the story in a major way, but instead, project it better for the screen. (It works so well too, considering this book is almost 3o years old!)
The book definitely took me longer than anticipated to read and is on the heavier side when it comes to details, narrative etc, so I did find it hard to stay focused at times (so it's good to bear that in mind) I also had never read anything by Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaiman before (I know! I know! I am going to read Coraline, Kayla I swear). I think the show definitely helped my reading, as I already had an understanding of the plot. The humour (love the banter), characters, strangeness, and magic of it all really are what kept me enthralled, making it entirely worth it....more

I read Heartstopper during The Reading Rush for a book that takes place on a different continent than yours as it takes place in the UK (Europe)! I live in North America so it was interesting reading about the schooling which definitely has similarities but go by a lot of different names (like form group = homeroom. I loved it a lot and am now reading the rest. (I already have so many thoughts so I may post an extended review later) Alice is one of my favourite authors of all time so if you haven’t checked out her books yet, I highly recommend you do!...more
