It iThis is a GREAT book if you are a self-trained individual pursuing the Ironman dream or trying to shave off some minutes of your personal record. It is very detailed and in-depth and Matt puts a lot of focus on helping you understand the purpose of the sessions and what each element of training is meant to provide. I can't stress this enough because it is a key part of his approach. Other books that I've read pretty much only subscriped a training plan and I would follow it along as smoothly as I could but I hardly ever understood the value of the sessions I did. With Matts approach this is vastly different and it helped me a lot in figuring out the bigger picture of my season.
I have to add though that I think this is not the ideal book for somebody that is completely new to triathlon. It can and will seem overwhelming if you are just starting out and I think a beginner would be better off to read a more basic book and start out on his quest with a less specific training approach to just get rolling. Then, after a few months you might want to start picking up this book and refining your approach.
Again: this is probably one of the best, if not the best resource to craft a perfect training plan for yourself if you want to get really serious. But it can easily lead to you putting the whole thing off altogether if you have no previous experience and it can seem like a very daunting task at first....more

Then I was blown away by the content and the magnificent writing of Christopher McDougall. What a stunner of a book! I loved it from start to finish. It contains a pretty good recollection of the history of the sport of Ultra Running, then their are some good tips and hints about proper running form sprinkled in, but mostly the book lives on a great story that keeps developing until the big showdown in the end. Beautiful stuff. And I can't help but be inspired to run more, explore nature and love the solitude on a good mountain trail. Thanks for this book!...more

It seemed like an endless (and I mean ENDLESS) barrage of names who Jho Low met and did business deals with. Names, upon names, upon names. At times, I felt like I was reading an address book and the general story was only progressing marginally at best. So until the halfway point, I would actually give this book a 1-star review. It became quite spicy after that point though and I really enjoyed the end, glad that I stuck with it. So overall, I would recommend the book, but I wished the author had found a way to consolidate the build-up a little....more

Lindbergh is perhaps one of history's last true explorers and adventurers. Reading his first-hand account of the flight gives you a completely new pespective on events. Sure, it takes guts to accomplish something like this but what I really liked the most about the book is Lindbergh explaining his thought process behind his actions and carefully evaluating risk and return at each single stage of his flight. He is masterfully juggling numbers and calculations in his head way out over the ocean to make decisions on whether to sacrifice extra mileage in order to get better vision or to keep a clearer head, etc. In the end this is a story of man's struggle against his own body and mind and an outstanding lesson in discipline and taking calculated risks. I never thought I could be so captivated by a 500 page book of a man sitting in a cockpit without moving for 40 hours straight, given the fact that I don't really dig aviation and I also already knew the outcome of the story. But here I am, adding another book to my favorites-shelf....more

It is astonishing and shocking that there is in fact no measurement of pundits' forecasts at the moment. Although I have to say that I found the book a little drawn out, especially towards the later chapters on teams and leaders. The key concept of this book could - in my opinion - have easily been explained in half the pages as well. I particularly liked how Tetlock tied in Kahneman's and Taleb's work as well towards the end of the book (as a matter of fact, I picked up all three books at the same time). There are indeed very relevant analogies (and opposing concepts), especially to Taleb's work on probability. I recommend Antifragile (Taleb) and Thinking Fast and Slow (Kahneman) as companion books to grab if this interests you....more
