Armentrout introduce us to a whole new universe in the first book of the awakening series. In this first book you ditscover an apocalyptic world where two races exist: The Highborn and the Lowborn. The first are those who dominate and rule the world, while the second are the poor unfortunate humans who live as best they can under these beings who, could be considered supernatural, immortal beings. They are Lords and Princes with infinite power and they are practically indestructible. They are some sort of fallen angels, destined to save humans and rule them on Earth.
The main protagonist is Calista, a young lowborn woman who has fought all her life to survive and make herself indispensable to the lord she serves, using her almost supernatural intuition and her ability to see people's future. But she has to be careful if she doesn't want to run the risk of being accused of witchcraft and killed for it.On her path she crosses a Highborn whom she already met as a girl. A being of great power and importance, Thorne. A Highborn...special and one to which she seems to feel connected on many levels. When the stability of the kingdoms is threatened, their connection will grow stronger and both their lives will be irrevocably affected and endangered.
Surprisingly (because JLa books are usually a guanranteed 5 stars rating for me), i have mixed feelings about this book. There are parts that I absolutely loved, others I liked and some I found a bi slow. I started my read with high expectations and not all of them were met. I will say that it was not what I expected but, as always, JLA managed to give it an amazing twist and rhythm towards the last quarter of the book and finish it with an ending that leave you on the edge of you seat and a desire to read the next one. It doesn't get five stars because it wasn't a great book for me, might be just because i'm used in faster pace in first book, maybe the timing for me just wasn't right as i've been very busy and tired in the last couple of weeks. But still, i enjoyed it and i'm already waiting for the next book!

I’ve always wondered about is intentions during that period and I enjoyed immensely to get into his head and….dirty mind! It’s been a while since I read the first book and never had the time for a re-read of the series so reconnecting with the characters with this book was a blast. Although the book felt familiar by moments, I discovered a whole other side of the story, and I had a much better understanding of Casteel at the end of this book.
This book is switching between the present (right after the events taking place in The war of two queens) and the first book. With this story I rediscovered so many of my favorite scenes and I was always entertained and even surprised by moments even if I knew the main plots of this story. It made me love Casteel even more, reading his struggles and feelings about everything that happened back then.
This book is a must read for every fan of the series and I would gladly take every single book from his POV if it wasn’t that I want the next book in the series even more! ...more
A Light In The Flame is the second book in the Flesh and Fire series, a prequel to Jennifer L. Armentrout's From Blood and Ash series. You don’t need A Light In The Flame is the second book in the Flesh and Fire series, a prequel to Jennifer L. Armentrout's From Blood and Ash series. You don’t need to have read the From Blood and Ash series but you’ll enjoy the journey much more if you do!
In this second installment, Sera has to face the consequences the discovery of the plan for which she has been training her whole life triggered at the same time she also need to deal with new dscoveries about herself. If everything wasn’t already complicated, she also need to acknowledge her deepening feelings towards Nyktos, the primal of death and the one she was destined to join as a Consort. But what has happened between them can’t be forgotten, and, furthermore, danger does not stop besieging them in the Shadowlands. Kolis, the false King of Gods and primal of Life, wants what she possesses.
Things get very intense in this book. The relationship between Nyktos and Sera, although damaged by her betrayal, is becoming stronger and more passionate. It evolves and, despite everything, both begin to share many moments, thoughts and feelings. Together they will work to defeat Kolis, but problems and betrayals are every steps in the way and, in the end, Sera will have to make a difficult decision to save the mortal worls, the world she now belongs to and the one she has fallen in love with.
This second installment is full of adventure, tension, unexpected turns, passion, love and much, much pain (no surprise here in a JLA book!) And the end? I’m still not over that…
The evolution of Sera and Nyktos is brutal. Sera has to face very complex and difficult situations, while making many discoveries about herself and what is about to happen, and while dealing with the mistrust and dislike of the people around her. Without a doubt, she is a very strong protagonist, imperfect and with many flaws and fears, but she faces all of them head-on, with courage. Nyktos, for his part, is not only the primal of Death, he is much more. He has vulnerabilities, fears, and a heart bigger than the shadowland. But he doesn't want to, he can't show weakness but can’t resist the lure of Sera. He will gradually lose his fear of showing himself as he is. Separately, they are amazing but together they are a force to be reckoned.
I had a hard time putting this book down from the moment I turned the first page. I’m already dying to read the next one. Everytime I think Jennifer can’t top a book she goes and write another one even more amazing, she will be the death of me that’s for sure! ...more
