ThiRobin McKinley is one of my favorite authors and reading anything by her is like slipping into my comfy socks and hanging out with my best friend. This book took me a little longer to get into than some of her others, but I loved the world and characters she created. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it if you're trying a McKinley book for the first time (in which case, go for The Blue Sword or Sunshine), but if you're already a fan of her style, you'll enjoy this. I have huge respect for her world building - she writes from a tradition very unlike the plot-driven, breathless-no-time-to-think (or sometimes properly develop world or character) YA style of today's bestsellers. I don't read her books if I want that breathless read....I read her books when I want to be fully transported and really take my time with a story. This one totally fit the bill....more

It's one of my very favorites and finishing The Bitter Kingdom just made me want to start all over from the beginning of the trilogy and enjoy it all over again. The writing and world-building is lush and detailed, the suspense is killer and Elisa may be my favorite YA heroines of all time. I'll be recommending this series and buying these books as gifts for friends, no question....more

However, after the first couple of chapters, when I'd fallen back into Rae Carson's world, I was HOOKED. The writing is incredible and Queen Elisa is one of my very favorite YA heroines of all time. She's strong and vulnerable and real and I absolutely love watching her grow into herself and her power. This book is a perfect blend of action, romance, and intrigue...I absolutely loved it and will be starting THE BITTER KINGDOM immediately. I can't wait to see how the series ends!...more

This was an intense read and I absolutely loved it. The stakes were super high and realistic, the love story moved at a wonderfully slow build, and the world building was fantastic. All around a fascinating read. I can't wait to pick up The Winner's Crime!...more

By the third chapter I was completely hooked, and the end was so intense and emotional I was blinking back satisfied tears. While I did see one big plot point coming, it took nothing away from my enjoyment of the story. Beautiful writing, fantastic pacing, and great character development. Stacey Jay is a beautiful writer and the world she created is exceptional. I absolutely loved this story and the way it swept me with it. The pacing in the second half in particular was absolutely break-neck. I LOVED IT. One thing I always really enjoy in Stacey's books is her clear and crazy-high stakes. In this regard, OF BEAST AND BEAUTY was no exception. And the romance....SWOON. Isra was such a fabulous heroine and I loved watching her journey of discovery. READ THIS BOOK! <3...more
