Given that Jules Feiffer is known in general audience mainly for his unique children books (last one "Rupert Can Dance" I reviewed today, as well) it was a bit curious to read a story so full with sarcasm of Hollywood stereotypes, nudity, treachery, many twists and much more paired with authorÂs bold illustrations.
Jules Feiffer for his work took main characters from the 30's creating impressive gallery of incredible figures with which reader will go together through the turbulent events and World War II years of last century.
It's challenging to write something in short and in same time that it sounds half as exciting as reader will enjoy before actually opening the first pages of this graphic novel. On the other hand, for some readers Feiffer's work can be at times a bit confusing due to many relations between the characters and events in which you will be drawn on book pages.
Still, you can be sure that more than one reading can be expected, partly for pleasure, partly because of the desire to understand all the little nuances of the story, through which the author leads us.
Therefore, "Kill My Mother: A Graphic Novel" by Jules Feiffer is title worth your time in which adult reader eager for a good story and interesting characters will fully enjoy....more

Martin "Dangerous Women" is a story anthology that consists of 21 stories from which fans will probably be the most interested for one by George R.R. Martin set in the Westeros world the around two hundred years before the events described in "A Game of Thrones" describing the Dance of the Dragons, the fierce war between two Targaryens over the Iron Throne.
And while the title of the collection suggests that the common theme of included stories are women who make problems, threaten or destroy that isn't entirely true. Although reader on its pages will meet all kinds of female protagonists which are far from being symbols of perfection or virtuous, most of them are characters which didn't want to leave their fate and lives to others...
What is characteristic of many anthologies especially in situations when they're of different genres - the unevenness of quality- happened in this case, resulting with a situation that some of the included stories are of exceptional quality, while there are some which certainly are not at a level that would be expected in such issue.
Also, short stories as format are not popular with all the readers because they most of the times don't allow the full development of the characters and the reader often wonders why the author didn't made the effort to develop it into a novel of normal length.
Personally I like to read short stories and I think that only the skillful writers succeed in this shorter form to give much more than what some will manage to deliver on 200 or more pages. It doesn't mean that I wouldn't like to read continuation "Raisa Stepanova" from Carrie Vaughn or Joe Abercrombie's "Some Desperado" which among some others are the best stories in this collection. Of course, understandable is publisher's decision to try selling this collection by including the world-famous name of George R.R. Martin, whose name is highlighted on the cover although he wrote only one of its 21 stories.
But don't be afraid, this collection is not only about Martin's story, indeed even though I'm big fan of his works, in my opinion his story is the fourth or fifth ranked by quality, which means that this anthology is worth reading....more

The reader will be introduced to two main characters -Woody Vourakis, protester against war in Vietnam and Mike Luckman, war helicopter pilot - old friends who choose differently and through their eyes witness the events which somehow split the generation in two, being witness to the political and social movements which marked these years.
When they will meet some time after the painful Vietnam story was over, they can barely recognize each other, but also they will both realize America that used to exist before now became something completely different.
Through their stories reader will once again experience the difficult days in Vietnam and wartime protests in US, without choosing the sides who was right and who was wrong, because the whole generation became victims of wrong decisions.
And while reader is following Woody and Mike, their trying to fulfill both professional and personal goals, being part of world that changes around them, story is sometimes humorous, sometimes sad, but most importantly realistic.
Therefore, "A Trick of Fame" will be especially liked by those readers who lived in this turbulent time of previous century while the younger ones will be able by reading it experience the struggles many Mikes and Woodys were going through these years....more

Main"The Age of Miracles" by Karen Thompson Walker is a well-made novel about one young girl who tries to overcome the inevitable changes in her life.
Main character, girl named Julia who is eleven year old, is passing through her youth experiencing all the same things everyone did in that age, misunderstandings with parents, demanding school obligations, problems with friends and boy she is in love, and on top of that going through the changes in her body... And then, on seemingly ordinary Saturday Julia will awake to discover catastrophe of astronomical proportions start happening. For some unclear reason, the Earth's rotation has begun to slow down, days and nights grow longer and longer, gravity is also affected resulting in environment thrown into disarray.
It would be revealed that the Earth's magnetic field has shifted and everybody will realize that nothing would be ever like it was before...
Story is told from Julia perspective that due to her age isn't so much into science details of this catastrophe. Therefore reader won't find the reasons why planet slowed down its rotation or what are the whole consequences of that strange phenomenon. Although the slowing down of Earth rotation is novel's main motive, actually the best part of this work is story of Julia on which this disaster has a little direct effect.
And for this reason it can be said that the futuristic foreshadowing of the new age for the planet Earth is actually a hint of the upcoming maturity of our heroine. Therefore, this novel is more of teen drama genre than of science fiction, only casually mentioning the situation Earth is suffering, while focusing on the changes a young girl will have to go through growing up in this changing and unknown world.
The novel's main premise is probably that people can't be fully prepared for the future since we're just imagining that we're masters of our destiny, like this novel convincingly demonstrated. We can prepare ourselves, but whatever prepared we feel or think we are, something can or probably will go different than we expected.
"The Age of Miracles" is novel that was nicely written offering a realistic view what can happen with our lives if such unexpected natural catastrophe take place, looked through eyes of young girl who deserves chance to live her life happily like most of us had chance.
This is a story about the need to move on with life, no matter how uncertain and different it may feel, and that's certainly a reason to recommend it for reading....more

In her novel author introduce one female science student named Bronwen who works in a Harvard lab. Due to her life inexperience she will make a huge mistake and jeopardize her entire career that in those years in the scientific community was already difficult to achieve if you were a woman.
Barbara Riddle wrote an exceptional novel about the difficulties one young woman will pass to enter almost completely male scientific community of the post-war America. The author skillfully describes this woman internship full of obstacles she will need to avoid on her way to the finish line from which she will emerge stronger and smarter.
Bronwen is believable character, smart, humorous and full of life but as all young people prone to making the wrong decisions, which are often direct life in one-way street. The characters with which Bronwen will interact are brilliant in their diversity, and no matter how much we liked or despised them for their actions, they're all excellently characterized from the pen of this author.
And this is just one of the reasons why this novel about a courageous and persistent young woman who was living and struggling in times when you had to be brave if you wanted to succeed as a woman, is worth reading....more

The novel is set in North Carolin"Serena" written by Ron Rash, an American poet and short story writer, is one of his four published novels from 2008.
The novel is set in North Carolina and it happens during the Great Depression, starting with year 1929. The authors of fiction are often accused of unwell fitting of actual events with fiction action, but Ron Rash made a great research exploring the events and characters that are looming in the background - the establishment of the National Park Great Smoky Mountains. With such a combination of a fictional and documentary, the author has added a pinch of private with descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, where he was born and still lives. Classic style is adapted to the twenties of the last century due to which he was attributed by many as one of the most important authors of the genre and geographical area to which he belongs.
Although the literary and movie world are still adapting to new female heroines, it seems to be quite refreshing from the crowd draw a figure like Serena. As someone said nicely - Ron Rash breathed life to the unmatched villain. Serena is anything but peaceful (lat. Serenus - calm, peaceful). Unscrupulous and beautiful, cruel, but attractive. The author manages to completely fascinate readers balancing between these contrasts
The book begins with the arrival of freshly married George and Serena Pemberton from Boston to the mountains of North Carolina, where wealthy George owns expanses of land and forest base. All will quickly realize that Serena is not one of the women which can be seen around every day. Although new in the area, her personality and ambitions are unmatched by any man. She prefers pants instead of expensive dresses and forestry base of luxurious villas. George and Serena have the intention to buy land refusing to sell it to the country for establishing a national park, but instead want to continue to slash their forests, create a wood industry empire and then move forward to the mahogany forests in Brazil. In addition to the destruction of forests and the life in it, the author gives a vivid image how the life looks like in forestry bases - workers who work six days a week , 11 hours a day, exposed to poisonous snakes, cold in the winter, axes, saws and drop down trees. Many of workers were not able to avoid injuries, even death.
While following the action related to the two main characters, author speaks in the third person, but in parallel he introduces one additional important character who narrates in the first person - Rachel Harmon, a young girl who was pregnant with George Pemberton before Serena came into his life. Both Serena and George immediately made clear to Rachel that neither she nor her son Jacob will ever get anything from them. Pembertons are removing from their path anyone who bothers them and they have no problems with any kind of brutalities to frighten the people around them. Especially cold Serena who quickly gained everyone's respect and fear, the traits that had not been peculiar to women.
The story elements are often shocking and lightning fast with a high dose of brutality and drama and because of that, it's hard to stop turning the pages. This is one of the few novels that include useful footnotes in which the reader learns interesting information and important people associated with the beginning of environmental awareness development. While such footnotes would be useful in other works as well, most of the novels are written in a way that implies that the reader already knows this information and omit such knowledge.
Although ÂSerena received many praises I hope that the author will get another bit of well-deserved glory from the upcoming movie directed by Susanne Bier who has already won an Oscar for best foreign film, especially because Jennifer Lawrence acts different type of character, sinister role of cold and calculated Serena.
In general, the novel written by Ron Rash is really dark, but impressive work of greed, corruption and revenge that you should definitely read....more

What makes Whaley's story especially powerful was the author's decision to use writing from the first person perspective, making the emotions felt by Benjamin more real, while we follow the main character in present time discovering the truth about the four decades buried family secret his father mentioned, back from the time when they three were family.
In present time, Benny has a partner and two little girls, unsuccessfully trying to fix problems from the past that resulted with his anger issues. And while the events of 40 years ago and today intertwining, the reader will slowly assemble a mosaic what makes a family and how to heal from the troubled pastÂ.

King Bradley, is the first installment in author's series that bears the same name - a real rollercoaster story that introduces reader to an appealing leading character that lives within the story made of fantasy, cyberpunk and science fiction elements.
The main character, a kid named Adam, who because of some issues from the past has very limited number of friends, is often the victim of bullying and violence from his high school classmates. Though the horrible memories haunt him from the past, Adam is going to find out that he is more than just an ordinary kid, discovering some extraordinary powers within him.
That would mark the beginning of story in which Adam needs to choose how he is going to use his newly found powers  fighting against the people from his past or trying to save the whole world, given the conflict that threaten to destroy everything.
A. King Bradley with his novel "Savior" manages to open in a great style new series characterized by the great pace - starting with the good introduction that will draw the reader completely into the story and then through lot of action, twists and turns leads to the outcome that sets the scene for the future sequels to come.
Also, the nice thing that can be found within is the music  yes, actually the book has a very own soundtrack that can be listen in the pauses between the readings, or in same time if you are able to concentrate on both things in same time.
Overall, A. King Bradley with ' Savior' managed to write very good novel for young adults and adults in love with SF and fantasy that managed to set the foundation for the continuation of this thrilling ride - hopefully, lasting for a long time.

Novak is a collection of stories for a new generation, a debut work written by man who is still more known as actor and producer of comedy series "The Office", but after this collection will certainly expand the circle of people who will be familiar with his work.
Inside, reader can find around seventy short stories, some of them more like anecdotes told in sentence or two, while some others go up to fifteen or so pages, without some common theme that characterizes the entire collection instead ranging from SF and love stories to the interesting satire and contemplation of youth.
Novak manages to surprise the reader while his stories are written in different styles and narration - sometimes being over-romantic, sometimes simply playful and silly, providing unexpected actions from his characters and behaviors that could not be foreseen. His writing certainly will not appeal to fans of classic stories, but it seems that this fact does not bother him too much because his stories are intended for the new generation, accustomed to obtaining quick and concise information.
And although I cannot say that I liked all the stories in collection, far from it, even that all of them are funny, few of them such as Kellogg's are truly excellent and will remain in the memory of the reader after closing the last page.
Novak has a talent for humor, and in which direction it will continue to take him in terms of writing, it remains to be seen. But what is certain is that with "One More Thing", his first collection of stories, B.J. If “The High Mountains of Portugal” were published before “The Life of Pi” less would read it, but definitely less people would be disappointed, as well. What we have in “The High Mountains of Portugal” is actually three novels very loosely connected, taking place many years apart. Though the motive that unites them is grief, yet not delivered in standard form, but combined in the great mix together with pathos and humor of all kinds. Martel also touches many delicate things such as faith, loss, slavery and human origins, showing us how important is to live our lives in the moment, not troubled by the past or worried by the future.

The story begins when a mysterious worldwide disease reduces the birthrate of female infants to less than 1 out of hundred. While science and worldwide governments are desperately trying to solve this problem that threatens the existence of human kind, the time passes. Twenty-five years later still there is no cure, and there are less than a thousand women on a whole world…
Zoey, the main hero of our story is 20 years old and she lives in a secure compound in the North West of U.S. The remaining women are split into group of seven, being protected from the unknown disease that almost wiped out women from this world. When they reach 21, these women are going to be introduced into the environment where they would be reunited with their parents.
While we are getting to know our main protagonist, we are also realizing how dystopian this world became…
This is the first book I read written by Joe Hart, yet I have to admit he manages to bring some fresh air into the genre, presenting the well-developed and intelligently crafted dystopian future. And though dystopias are usually tagged as YA titles, this one will be enjoyed by adults as well. And definitely it is a step forward when it comes to graphic violence compared to other YA titles.
I liked the way author gradually and a bit slowly raised the tension until in one moment all hell breaks loose and reader can’t stop reading until the very last page. Though there are some questions that are kind of confusing when it comes to women treatment given their number, still “The Last Girl” can be recommended novel not only for readers who enjoy all the (YA) dystopian reads, but also those willing to consider some fundamental questions about our society that Joe Hart with his novel raises. ...more

They are going to move from Pittsburgh to New Mexico, trying to start new life. Samantha is going to meet guy named Lucien Foster, who though new to her somehow feels so familiar. Samantha is firstly a bit nervous when it comes to Lucien because of his sudden showing up, but soon the unbelievable truth is going to be revealed in front of her eyes – Lucien will show her the whole new world, some fantastic powers she only read about or watch in movies.
And though all of it seems so appealing, especially as Samantha grows closer Lucien, in same time she is afraid what is going to happen in the future…

Paris is a novel that will remind reader of “Girl on the train” or “Gone Girl” - shocking and disturbing psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of the seat.
The book starts with Jack and his wife Grace, a perfect couple at first glance, giving a dinner party. Jack works as a lawyer, specialized in defending victims of domestic abuse. And he is very successful and confident lawyer, given he never lost a case.
Grace is the housewife whose childhood was far from perfect given the problems she had with her parents who left taking care of Grace’s younger sister entirely to Grace. But, these days relationship between Jack and Grace looks as if it could not be better. Or at least seems like that, until you look under the surface… behind their closed doors a completely different truth awaits.
While we move from Past to Present, slowly we understand the complexity of Grace’s life and all the troubles she found herself in. Though I don’t plan to give away the details of this thrilling and sometime horrifying story ,there were times when in same time I wanted to stop reading, but could not resist to find out what is going to happen on the next page…
First of all, it was great to find out "Behind Closed Doors" is author’s debut novel and could not wait to see what follows next. B. A. Paris decided to use similar kind of delivering story as Paula Hawkins and Gillian Flynn – labeling her chapters as Present and Past that makes this novel additionally addictive to the very last pages.
Given this is the first published work of this author I would especially emphasize her great writing skills and intelligent style that manages to constantly raise the tension and pushes reader to continue reading until the very end.
I can highly recommend you reading of "Behind Closed Doors", both because of style and excellent story that makes it an addictive and thrilling read. Though be advised if you read it before going to bed, next day you will be tired......more

Today I am writing the review of final, third installment in Brown’s series and I am glad to confirm the hunch was right!
With this mix of dystopia, science fiction, fantasy and thriller, even more graphically explicit than “Hunger Games” (with which it could be compared but has some significant differences), author Pierce Brown managed to have appeal not only on YA but also adult audience.
For those unfamiliar with the series, the story takes reader to the planet Mars, on which human colony is built. The main character named Darrow is one of the Helldivers, people who live in the caves beneath the surface spending their lives like moles, drilling and mining the elements needed for Mars to be terraformed.
Darrow belongs to the caste called Reds, and although only sixteen he is married and aware of the inevitable scenario of his life, to be spent in the same way as his ancestors, in order for future generations to might live better. He is madly in love with his wife Eo, a beautiful woman full of life, the only light in his dark underground life. But due to the tragic events Darrow is going to be separated from her, and from that moment both readers and the main character would be on the same side while we are starting to learn about the second, privileged caste.
Their name is Golds and for long time they are deceiving poor workers exploiting them as slaves for their easy life. Darrow is going to escape from the pre-written story of his life and embarks on a journey to find out what is really going on in his world and what is behind the lies Reds were taught for generations…
In second installment “Golden Son” we continued to follow destiny of Darrow who continued his battle, trying to bring down Gold society from within, ensuring the freedom for his people.
I don’t want to disclose any plot details of third part in order not to spoil excitement of own discovery, though in shot our hero will get another chance to destroy the class-based society though against him would be some that Darrow once considered friends making the decisions whom to trust almost impossible…
As overall verdict of whole series, though the novel setting and for some part even the plot was similar, “Red Rising” as trilogy managed to describe much more complex world than the one in “Hunger Games”, while its characters all the time were far from perfection, full of flaws and bad choices.
The story from the very start was extremely brutal with some emotional scenes, especially those we remember from the first installment that brought few tears from those more emotional readers.
“Red Rising” is much more than ordinary fantasy – it’s an epic trilogy full of lies, suffering and gore. Pierce Brown masterfully with this final installment brought his imaginative civil war conflict to a most satisfying ending....more

I had chance to read it before official release date and though impressions are still fresh, I could say to you – it was worth waiting for…
The book continues to follow Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, exactly at the same spot we left her in previous installment. For those that need to be reminded, Mare lives in a dystopian world divided by color of blood – while Silver people are elite, the Red ones are common people.
I am not going to disclose details series’ first part written by Victoria Aveyard, but the most important thing we found out in “Red Queen” was that Mare is much more dangerous to Silvers than anyone could imagine – something she realized when started working in the Silver Palace. And that something threatens to change the established order…
Victoria Aveyard still writes her story from main character’s perspective taking us on the double journey with Mare. The first one is real physical journey where Mare is going to join Scarlet Guard, in search of other members of her caste that have Silver characteristics with one purpose only – fighting against Maven, the new King and his mother. The other journey is something that happens inside of her – she needs to understand who she is, after pretending for so long to be something else, something she is not…
Though it is difficult to go more into the analysis and not spoil the fun of own discovery, I especially loved the slower pace of sequel, together with some intriguing moments when we start discovering Mare as a person of flesh and blood, not some flat book character we usually encounter in many books.
Therefore, in my opinion Victoria Aveyard made good decision steering her series in calmer waters, yet with enough actions and thrills to keep you interested until the very last page....more

The well-rounded characters and a nicely conceived story both make K. R. Connor’s work a recommended read for fans of fantasy fiction literature. Therefore, if you are searching for good and original story from the author still not worldwide known, ‘The Undead Key’ could be your reading choice worth the consideration and promising start of new series.

Sara Pennypacker, known for his “Clementine” series and “Meet the Dullards”, with her latest book delivers a profound and emotional read for younger school children which manages to keep attention through all of his 300 pages. It is a story of friendship, kindness, sacrifice, a wonderful message how important are friends in our lives.
Speaking about the artwork, Jon Klassen again produced beautiful illustrations characterized by appealing, though not so usually encountered, use of black and white that makes this book equally enjoyable to read and look.
Therefore, “Pax” with its beautiful story and remarkable artwork is work worth of recommendation – a book that would inspire children with its profound lesson. ...more

And, you know… young girls love reading Lunar Chronicles. And when they heard about this new LC edition, well… that was a cause for a real celebration.
Of course, publication of “Stars Above” was driven by marketing departments in order to continue hype caused by publishing of long-awaited “Winter”, the fifth book in Marissa Meyer’s “Lunar Chronicles” series, but one should admit the author managed to do this in a big style.
This is the first book of stories set in the Lunar Chronicles’ world and Marissa Meyer even changed her initial plan of including two original stories – instead she went beyond writing five completely new stories, including a prequel and epilogue to “Winter”.
For Lunar Chronicles fans this book would be real gem, something that they should not miss, while for other young readers (if there are such who had not read LC) my daughters told me reading of LC books would be recommended first.
You can rest assured that kids are going to love it… ...more

The best part of the novel is definitely its unique story that is both intriguing and enjoyable, providing solid pace and well-conceived and unpredictable twists.
On the other hand, speaking about the above mentioned self-publishing issues, the novel would definitely benefit from some additional editing – something that self-published authors tend to forget.
There are several aspects that could be improved, in result making this novel a work of high quality. The most important is lack of explanation in some areas that could confuse more demanding author and the other one is the concept of time travel itself, that is not entirely convincing and some of its details just don’t make sense.
However, these disadvantages are of far less importance than the main things that would attract potential readers to particular novel - its story and protagonists. Therefore, I hope I would have the opportunity to read the second installment of this interesting science fiction story written by this imaginative author.
Catharine Bramkamp’s ‘Future Girls' is a novel that certainly could be recommended to young adult and science fiction fans, thus they can increase my rating at least for a half of star - within its covers the story awaits that would definitely intrigue you for its sequels.

Though I usually don’t comment the book cover, especially when it comes to self-published titles, ‘The Eighth Day’ managed to arouse my interest even before I open the first page. But when I read novel’s opening sentence it definitely showed me this guy knows how to intrigue his readers…
Therefore all those who seek novels full of mystery and suspense elements, thrown into not so distant future, combined with some thrilling twists and turns would find John’s novel an engaging and exciting read.
Though I don’t want to reveal any detail about the plot in order not to spoil the fun of own discovery, I especially loved the way author uses to lead reader to more or less unexpected ending.
Hopefully, ‘The Eighth Day’ would not be the last time we heard about Detective Sam Harrington and Shawn Jaffe, because they are great protagonists who can keep reader interest in many novels to come. And most certainly, beside intriguing story, they two are the biggest strength of this novel.
Overall, if you found yourself described in the first sentence of my review, you can be sure time spent with ‘The Eighth Day’ would be fully justified.

Max Pzoras is the real example of successful young man, a Wall Street yuppie who lives his own dream. But when his mother dies of cancer, Max’s life is shaken and suddenly he feels empty inside, regardless of all beautiful things and people around him.
Only when because of pure chance encounter Max is going to meet an Indian cart owner he would realize he has to leave all his old life behind and embark on journey that is going to change his life forever. His goal is to find a yogi who is more legend in people stories than someone real. Max cannot imagine what lies in front of him – desert, the highest mountain in the world and many other unbelievable locations and people until he would be able to find what actually he is looking for…
If there is one novel that I can recommend giving you overview of Indian life and culture, most probably that would be Bajaj’s „The Yoga of Max's Discontent“. From the first pages until the very end, you would not be able to put it down while you are slowly drawn into the mystical world of India and its people.
And though this book speaks about the real, physical journey I would say this is at least equally spiritual and physical travelling – a journey to understand the differences between East and West, the ways to find tranquility and peace.
Overall, this is the first book I read from Karan Bajaj but certainly not the last one – it would remain in my mind for a long time…

Robb is another installment in highly popular “In Death” series. And though the formula is already well-known, the good news for all the fans is the newest sequel is one of the best Robb wrote so far.
It begins with the assault that would result with hurting of someone dear to Lt. Eve Dallas. But that would be only the start of big case with many victims and even more suspects, all wrapped up in numerous secrets that are going to make Eve’s life harder.
And though I would not spoil the fun by disclosing the plot, I must emphasize this novel can be read as standalone, though there are some great motives that only regulars would be able to fully appreciate – such as Eve and Roarke relationship or some emotional scenes between Eve and Dennis who is not present in all the books, yet he is with us for all these years.
Full of conspiracies, twists and turns that only J.D. could think of, I would say “Brotherhood in Death” is great book for weekend – you would not feel guilty of being tired the next day at work like me – because the latest sequel in “In Death” series in novel difficult to put down. ...more
