In this particular Book VI, poet’s theme is this hero’s descent into the underworld.
And as much as I enjoyed Seamus Heaney’s “Beowulf” translation, I have to admit his new translation of “Aeneid” was even bigger pleasure to go through - although it is questionable how such two masterpieces can even be compared.
Therefore I have to agree with my fellow reviewer I envy people who are going to read “Aeneid Book VI” for the first time in this inspiring and poetic translation. ...more

AnI'm big fan of Caitlin Moran writing therefore I was very excited to go through an anthology of her political texts, conveniently named Moranifesto.
And though with many of these works from her columns I am already familiar, Caitlin Moran once again managed to make me laugh, excite, she made me worry and made me wonder.
But for the umpteenth time, Moran shows how intelligent and candid observer she is, with her voice and pen showing that she is one of us.
Caitlin Moran demystifies politics; she speaks about contemporary dilemmas and problems that plague politicians, as well as us - the ordinary people. Thus it seems that the issues usually seen as something incomprehensible and at a higher level of understanding, to become comprehensible and their solutions easier to achieve.
If you like Moran this book is certainly worth recommendation, if you have not yet read anything by her - I recommend that you start with this book....more

T‘The Financial Freedom Guarantee’ written by Marco Robinson is an extensive, well-presented and professionally written guide for property investment.
Though the author starts his book with lot of self-promotion, the overall impression this book leaves is very good. I would say his book is quite comprehensive, provides wealth of information and it is easy-to-go-through – therefore making content found inside not only useful, but easy and logical to follow. Though personally I'm not interested in topic Marco Robinson wrote his book about, ‘The Financial Freedom Guarantee’ can be seen as a good example for all those who want to write a similar book regardless of the city, a country or topic they try to cover.
Beside the ten chapters named by particular advices such as reprogram your default operating system, have compelling life goals or manage your investment wisely, the author continuously provides examples from own experience that make his book more believable and lifelike, compared to many dull manuals that can be found on market.
Therefore, Marco Robinson with his guide succeeded in making property investment process fully transparent and easy to comprehend - for those already experienced, but rookies as well. Given all the above mentioned, ‘The Financial Freedom Guarantee’ can be highly recommended book for those who plan to embark on journey of real estate investment or just want to see how professionally informative investment guide should look like.

The author sent‘Tori & The Jackstones’, a first book in series written by Rod Stoner is unique and charming book in every single way you can think of.
The author sent it to me for unbiased review and I waited for so long to take it in my arms. And when I start browsing through its pages and show it to my youngest 3 and a half years old daughter she was as much thrilled as I was.
In same time entertaining and educational, Stoner who is himself father of four, with his book takes young and young at heart readers on a journey full of stories - combining puzzles and music, adventure and mysteries.
The book is interactive and though I’m enjoying with my preschool child, I can imagine older children having equally great time going through it. While solving puzzles, kids learn how to use their minds in logical, yet creative way which is absolutely perfect way how to keep their attention and motivate them to learning.
Therefore, my big recommendations for Rod Stoner’s work – he manages to combine all the tiny elements required to produce exciting, educational and innovative book for children.

After she graduated from the University of Toronto with a double-major in English and Criminology she worked on various places and different jobs, all around the world – from teaching and IT to waitress and executive assistant.
I started this review with author's bio for clear reason - Agnieszka Paletta due to her life experience understands what big picture is, she has sense of humor and in her writing is evident how restless spirit she is.
I did not had chance to read the first part of her “Doing Germany” series, but its sequel is full of humor - an easy read, unpretentious work that is fun to go through.
While she (continues to) discover Germany there are plenty of situations that will make you laugh, though there are also few great unexpected lessons to be learned while browsing through her pages.
“Doing Germany 2” is a good read and though in opposite order, Agnieszka Paletta intrigued me enough to read the first part of her series (as soon as I manage to). ...more

Inside the covers the simple story of turning an ordinary chore into something exciting is presented. On the other hand, father was the one who came up with the idea of epic adventure therefore he was very cautious, while Elphie became bored because she was not allowed much space. The lesson authors provided is that kids need to have some space from their parents.
What is also particularly noteworthy about this book is its artwork – the nicely made digital illustrations that on whole spreads picture particular scenes from the story. The illustrations are full of bright and warm colors, while the level of detail would allow with each new reading to spot some new previously unnoticed detail.

Definitely the author’s ambitions were high – an unusual story of femme fatale named Judith/Lauren in a world of art who leaves lot of bodies behind, combined with graphic sex scenes (much better than those in 50 Shades).
But the final result was not quite successful – it feels in moments a bit unbelievable and somehow unfinished, like the author wanted too much and wasn’t sure how to completely round the whole story.
Though I am not disappointed and I am not going to disclose plot details in order not to spoil the fun, yet I recommend readers not to expect too much – a good piece but definitely not masterpiece. ...more

This time for their subject they take women, asking the same question, therefore no big surprise this collection is called “Poems That Make Grown Women Cry”.
Of course, when it comes to the anthologies of all sorts, some of works are great, some are good and few you will not lose much if they are skipped. Still, these days “Poems That Make Grown Women Cry” are one of the few poetry collections I would highly recommend – delivering beauty and emotions in different forms, causing melancholy, sorrow or tears.
The nice feature in both collections are adding of brief explanation why each poem was chosen to become part of collection – beside being interesting to read, even more interesting is to see how two persons can have different view of particular poem, different reasons what makes it so special.

While children imitate the text it enables them to internalize the language patterns of storytelling, then work on them, becoming confident inventors of their own stories, in process.
This approach also is helpful for setting the foundation of love towards reading, helping children to move from spoken storytelling to start writing their own stories.

Some are based on clients author has worked with and in these cases, while others are based on emails and subsequent phone or Skype conversations he has had with people who contacted him and who have also given permission for their use.
James also uses famous people to exemplify points he is making. You will find story of Paula Yates and her daughter Peaches Geldof and some other famous examples, mostly based on biographies and autobiographies. The author emphasizes that as in his previous books, these psychobiographical examples are based on reliable sources, like the famous people’s own accounts of their fives, and in some cases, his own personal experience from working with them, or interviews he did with them. In using psychobiography, he is following the tradition developed by Sigmund Freud and Lytton Strachey, hoping to engage the reader through famous people with whom they may feel they already have some kind of relationship, through the media, or their artistic or scientific creations.
Human beings have the longest period of dependence on their parents for survival of any species. Whereas most mammals are independent after a few weeks or months, humans require five years. For that reason, humans start off highly attuned to our main carers, hoping to attract their loving and material resources. We may die, emotionally as well as literally, if we do not.
The latest evidence from the Human Genome Project is proving that it is not genes which make psychological traits run in families. There are physical traits that pass down genetically, like height, looks and eye color, but it now seems very much as if variations in things like mental illness, smartness or shyness, have little or nothing to do with the sequences of DNA which pass from parent to child.
Rather, it is proven that patterns of nurture make us like our parents and grandparents: what travels down the generations are precise kinds of bickering, humor, snide asides, delicious food preparation, beatings, hugging, short-temperedness.
You are like you are because you were related to by both your parents in very particular ways, good and bad. When you have children, you are liable to do exactly the same, or something similar, in many respects, or else react against it.
How you were cared for, especially in early life, was critical. This, in turn, was caused by the way your parents were cared for, all the way back to your grandparents and beyond. The best evidence suggests that nine out of ten maltreated children develop a mental illness as adults. Seventy per cent of maltreated children become maltreating parents themselves.
Much nurture is positive, the love and sensitivity, the teaching of skills, the intimacy. But in almost all families, there are toxic patterns. The implication is that we do not have to go on repeating the past.
Genes enable almost all of us to acquire language. But which one we speak is wholly dependent on the one we are taught by our parents and society. The same way, nearly all of us have the potential for psychological characteristics like liveliness, intelligence or depression, but the extent to which we develop them and in precisely what way depends largely, or completely, on nurture.
Though I finished it an hour ago and my impressions are still fresh, “Not In Your Genes” written by Oliver James is book you must read if you are interested in psychology, especially children’s. ...more
