Three sisters. A storm of unimaginable proportions. Characters and description all excellent. Very engaging story with humor, drama and great observation of the lives of women. The story is based on an actual storm in 1913. Loved it from page one. I hope this book gets the exposure it deserves. ...more

As police struggle find links between their murder victims - all clearly killed by the same person, but why? - a link is established between the killer and one of their own, Detective Jane Renwick. She's a great character with a dark past that leads us to several suspects, each of whom looks likely to be the guilty party. I particularly enjoyed her relationship with her partner Rachael, and her protective friends Tim and Bear. Edinburgh, as in all Val Penny's novels, is a wonderful backdrop for all the action. Fast-paced and satisfying, The First Cut opens a new series with some familiar characters. One to watch! ...more
I came to this book with some knowledge of Leonora Carrington because of prior research for my own books about asylums and women's mental health, so II came to this book with some knowledge of Leonora Carrington because of prior research for my own books about asylums and women's mental health, so I was excited to really get to know Leonora and her life. This is SUCH a beautifully written story. I'm not surprised Michaela Carter is also a poet and the richness of her language made this a pleasure to read. It's a love story, a war story, a story of creativity and freedom of expression, of survival, of illness, and of compromise.
Be warned - you will want to do some googling while reading this book! I just had to look at the paintings and photographs as they were being described. I'd also say it's not a light read. There's a lot going on when you have lots of geniuses on the page, but I felt the structure - moving backwards and forwards between the years before and during the war - helped with momentum. The sections concerning Leonora's ill-health were masterfully done! I suspect writing this was a herculean task. It really worked for me....more

It's highly readable and engaging, incredibly clever, and also very funny. Haynes made all these women so real to me, with all their anger, fear, power or powerlessness shining through on every page. The story moves seamlessly in time from the immediate aftermath of the Trojan horse episode, all the way forward to the return of Odysseus, but also back to the petty squabbling of the Gods (LOVE the scene with the apple!) that started the whole thing off. Just a wonderful read from start to finish....more

And Re-reading this novel after so many years was quite the experience. I first tried it as a teenager and hated it. Then I studied it at University. And of course I've watched any number of movies and adaptations. Reading it now, I found it a lot darker than I remembered and I had a pretty negative reaction to almost every character. Definitely I'm more of a Jane Eyre fan, than Wuthering Heights. But find myself wondering if there are any attempts out there to rewrite it from Heathcliff's pov, or even recast it as a modern psychological thriller/domestic abuse story. Could be interesting......more

The writing is excellent, the characters are all very well-rounded and believable.
