It's dark. It's gritty. It's even surprising. Just when I thought I knew how it would end, Mr. Cavanagh shocked me. The tagline hooked me. It's utterly brilliant, and sucked me in immediately before I had even finished a page. But from page one, I wanted more. The antagonist is diabolical and wicked. The hero is not your everyday protagonist. When I started reading this, I didn't realize that there were three other books already out there about our lovable con artist-turned-lawyer, Eddie Flynn. I will definitely be checking out the other books in the series.
*Just a note, however...this book would benefit from a really good once-over by a copy editor. There weren't that many typos (some missed hyphens and the like) but the grammar and the punctuation issues were a bit distracting. If you can ignore them, it's a fantastic read!...more

SMOKE AND IRON starts right where we left off with ASH AND QUILL and the rest of the Great Library series.
Because the group is scattered, we get different POV chapters in this book, but the author pulls it off beautifully. While I am not always a fan of this storytelling method, it seems necessary for all the moving pieces here and was wonderfully done.
The plotting is exquisite and gets better with each new entry to the series. The characters have grown and changed as the series progresses, and they feel like real people. Each book is like a novel-length chapter to the overall arc. You want to start at the beginning [and we suggest you do!], but you will never want them to end.
I think this idea started as a five-book series, but I’m hoping for many more. ...more

Rose Marshall is a sixteen-year-old from the 50s, killed nonsensically on prom night and taken from her one true love. For over 60 years, she has performed the job given to her by the Lady upon death, and has traveled the roads as a hitcher, helping other ghosts that die on the road get home--one way or the other. But she has one other driving purpose: find and eliminate the jerk who killed her. Bobby Cross.
Told as a series of interconnected snippets jumping from past to present in her encounters with other ghosts and witches and the living, SPARROW HILL ROAD is a very creative tale that engages and entertains. It can get a little confusing at times if you're not thoroughly invested, as the McGuire uses small chapter flashbacks to help drive the tale and there is lots of random character interaction for different purposes depending on the ghost story she is attempting to tell, but the creativity that went into the creation of this world and its characters was a breath of fresh air....more

Lifeblood starts right whereFirstlife was amazing. Utterly unique and captivating, but I knew that Lifeblood would be incredible. And boy was it ever…
Lifeblood starts right where Firstlife left off so I wouldn’t recommend this book to readers who have not read book #1. But for those of us who have, it immediately grabs you.
One of the things I found the most fascinating about these books are the tiny details. Everything, and I do mean everything means something. And it’s all so very well thought out. The world building is some of the best I’ve read, and the characters are very well developed and instantly loveable.
Lifeblood showed a lot of character growth. For all of our main characters and some of our supporting cast, as well. And some of the things that happened were the perfect conflicts to drive that growth.
One thing I will say about Lifeblood…it’s sexy! My brain was thinking YA as I went into it despite knowing that even Firstlife had its moments of maturity, but while there’s no sex, it’s very, very sexy (and utterly wonderful). ☺
It was also surprising in the most delicious of ways. I was shocked at times. I raged at others. I cheered a lot. I gasped, as well. It was an emotional roller coaster that I ate up hour by hour, and Emma and cast did an incredible job of bringing the characters and the story to life.
I highly recommend the Everlife series. Gena never lets me down. ...more

In the riveting conclusion to H.D Smith's unparalleled Devil's Assistant Our review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Michelle: ~Edition: Audio book
In the riveting conclusion to H.D Smith's unparalleled Devil's Assistant series, Dark Contender brings everything together. It answers all of those little questions that popped up throughout the series, and takes you on yet another thrill-ride with the wonderfully constructed characters and arc that we've come to know and love through the last 3 books.
First, let me say that this series brings about some of the best worldbuilding I have ever encountered. These are not for speedy surface readers. There is too much depth and way too much going on for anything other than an involved pleasure read.
As an add-on to the worldbuilding, the mystery is incredible. The twists and turns keep you guessing, and I can guarantee, that nine times out of ten, you won't be right. I figured out part of the twist in this last installment, but even somewhat knowing what would be coming, H.D had me surprised.
It's almost impossible to write reviews for these books, as I found out with the last few. But in generalities, I can tell you that if you like paranormals with large-scale worldbuilding, characters that you will care about--both positively and negatively--mystery, suspense, action, and yes, even some smexy romance, you simply must check out these books! Leave your life behind for a bit and get lost in the in between, you won't be disappointed....more

It will reawaken any practiced reader, and gently guide any new user to the ways of the tarot. And the art on these cards resonates beautifully. I don't feel like I have to reach to grasp what they're trying to tell me. Maybe because it's more modern? Maybe because they're almost wholly "positive?" Poetic prose, vivid imagery, and captivating characterization combine to spin a tale both enchanting and enthralling. I simply did not want to stop listening to this book, and it has immediately gone into the "Will Read Again" pile.
What a breath of fresh air! Highly recommended. I'm off to read book #2 now...

I love the sci-fi feel of these, with the dragon realm being on another planetary realm, and Deborah did an amazing job with the romantic tension in this first installment of the Dragons of Incendium.
Drakina must join with her prophesied carrier and conceive a son who is set to be the crown prince and the savior of their planet. However, the dragon princess has no intention of staying with the human once she's gotten what she's after. But when she gets to know him, she realizes that Troy is her heartmate, not just her baby daddy. Unfortunately, the man's intentions for the princess are nefarious.. He's bartered to get out of prison in exchange for the dragon's life. But once he meets her, he knows he'll never be able to do it, and his life might just be worth a few moments of pleasure in her arms.
Drakina and Troy's journey of discovery is rife with surprises and will keep you riveted. The only reason I didn't give the book the 5th star was because it was very short and left me feeling as if the story were rushed a bit. Someting to be expected with novellas, however. I'm looking forward to listening to more, as Saskia is perfect for the narration of these tales!...more

My total admiration of Nalini Singh had no standing on my personal feelings for the book. I can't really write too much without making this into a spoiler review and I have those types of reviews so this is not going to be a long review.
When I started Allegiance I went in knowing that it was going to be multiple P.O.V. I also knew it was going to be a complete Psy/Changeling novel, no short stories. What I did not know was that Ms. Singh was going to pack this book to the brim with all the characters that we have come to know and love. Now I won't lie all the switching gave me a headache, until I realized that is she still running the same plotline throughout all the different points of view. She also does an amazing job of running the plot line while catching us up on everything that is happening with the various couples. I found myself eagerly awaiting the next pov switch - who would give me the next piece of information and character update. I truly believe though that the best parts and also the most informative were the letters that were sprinkled throughout the entire book, but didn't take anything away from the bottom storyline, because Singh made sure everything connected - everything. We finally get some back story on the human that was best friends with two very dangerously powerful Psy.
There was never a dull moment in the book, there was also a lot happening but that just underlined one very important thing that I think brought the whole purpose of the book to the forefront... The Psy, the Changeling and the humans were working together to get to a place were they could coexist without issues. Yes, there was your usual suspects that were firmly against the unification of the races, but the love, respect and pure stubbornness that our good guys possess was enough to eclipse all the hate. The title of the book pretty much sums it up with no issues ALLEGIANCE OF HONOR. These races gave their allegiance to one another nothing and no one is going to take that a way from them. Their honor will not let them back down or turn a blind eye to the happenings in the world because it all affects them in some way shape or form. They are united and they refuse to go back to what they were. Sascha I think said it a best... "I believe in us... All of us. I believe we'll find a way out of the darkness. The consortium won't won-and in beating it, we'll forge bonds no one will be able to break." She had it right, except for one thing. The bonds are already forged, they just have to reinforce them with hardened steel wrapped in love, understanding and acceptance.
Allegiance Of Honor is the book that gave us all hope that things would be great, that the races could survive with help from one another. Allegiance is the book that put it all in prospective for them all and gave off one simple statement from our many hero's (even if some don't think they are) in my opinion - YOU ARE EITHER WITH US OR AGAINST US AND WE DON'T PLAN ON LOSING. ...more

Speechless. That sums up my feelings after reading Faith Hunter's latest offering in the Jane Yellowrock series. Shadow Rites is a full-on punch in the gut. It leaves one breathless. Stunned. And yes, speechless.
As Jane continues to prepare for the unwelcome visit from the European vampires, she must also take time to finalize plans for the vampire and witch meeting that could bring about an agreement between the long-time enemies. But as usual, just when Jane seems to have a handle on things, her world takes a hard left into fubar town. A vampire long believed to be truly dead, is found. A victim of kidnapping, torture and blood magic. Someone wants to make sure that the vampire/witch accord is not signed. And it is obvious that no line will remain uncrossed in order to disrupt any hope of peace. Jane has to figure out the who and the how in order to stop this unknown deadly threat.
When other series begin to wan after awhile, Faith Hunter has found the magic formula that keeps a long-running series continually evolving. Each book is not only as good as the last, it is even better....more

I adore Rachel anI've been a fan of Kim's Hollows series for its duration, and jumped into Peri Reed book #1 on audio not long after it was released. I adore Rachel and the gang, and Peri surprisingly captured my heart, as well after finishing The Drafter. When I heard that a short story was being released marrying the worlds, my first thought was, "how?" The Hollows is all post-Turn Cincinnati, where witches and werewolves and vampires and demons abound. Peri Reed is very sci-fi, futuristic Detroit with loads of technology, etc. So, how, then would Kim bring the two together? Beautifully, that's how.
In a drunken stupor, Jack--Peri's partner, anchor and lover--goofs off and ends up summoning a demon through time and space with the help of a device that he and Peri just retrieved and are set to deliver to their agency. That demon...none other than Rachel Morgan.
When the two meet, sparks fly, as you can imagine. After all, the one thing we can always bank on with Kim Harrison books is a kickass heroine. And put two together and we have either a recipe for disaster or the makings of a perfect alliance. In Waylaid, it ends up being a little bit of both as Peri helps Rachel find a way to return home, and Rachel helps Peri uncover answers to some possible nefarious goings-on at her agency--in true Rachel Morgan/Peri Reed fashion (read: action-packed and trouble around every turn).
As a overall Kim Harrison fan, I found this short very, very enjoyable and the perfect break to a long day of work. I will say that if you are not completely caught up with the Hollows series, there are references to some things that can be spoilers, especially with regards to Rachel's love life and the state of things with the Collective, etc. And I definitely do not suggest reading this if you haven't read The Drafter. I have a feeling you would be really confused as to who Peri and Jack are, what type of world they live in, and how things work for them and those they work for. But...if you are all caught up and have read The Drafter, you definitely need to read this little piece of magic....more

Phoebe Meadows thinks she is just a normal small town girl living in NYC until she is struck by lightning in the storage room at Macy's. When she gets home, she finds that her neighbor, Ingrid, is actually her aunt, and they need to get out because someone is after Phoebe. After that, Amanda Carlson takes us on an incredible journey filled with Norse Mythology, Valkyries, gods and demigods. But that isn't all that is involved in this story. Phoebe's character is one kickass heroine, she isn't afraid to get in there and fight. And I loved that she was sarcastic, witty, strong, and wasn't afraid to fall for Fen, the demigod she just happened to encounter.
From the very beginning of this book, we had twists and turns, action and sarcasm. This was seriously a fun book to get lost in. I love books where there is so much action going on that you literally can't put the book down. That is what happens with Struck. You don't want to do anything else but see what these characters will get into next, or see what happens to them. The spin Amanda put on the mythology was perfect, I don't know much about it, but the information she gives along with the character's stories makes you want to know more.
I can't wait to read the next book to see what happens with Phoebe, Fen, and Fen's brother, and her human friend Sam. ...more

Like the rest of the Sons of Sangue series, Rogue grabs hold and doesn't let go.
Anton “Rogue” Balan, who used to be "Blondy" is working undercover with the police and Feds to catch the Cartel's leader. Unfortunately, that means lying to his brothers and everyone else, and getting involved with a rival MC that has an agenda he doesn't agree with. Not even a little. His life gets more complicated as the days pass, and that's made even worse when he returns home and runs into the ever-tempting Kimber.
Kimber and Anton had a relationship, but it didn't have time to go far before he was yanked away on his mission. Despite the time and distance and gossip, however, Kimber can't stop thinking about the sexy guy. She knows deep down, he's probably not good for her, but she wants him with an unending passion.
And the feelings are mutual. Anton can't stay away from Kimber, despite the danger and lies and evil that follow him. He's pulled in many directions, but one thing remains constant. His need to have the sexy librarian in his life.
Anton earned my heart in the 3rd book of the series, Gypsy. And quickly become one of my favorite heroes by the end of Rogue. With danger, intrigue, action, subterfuge, and a whole lotta sexy times, Patricia hit it out of the park with this installment of the Sons of Sangue.
I highly recommend this series to vampire romance and MC fiction readers, but I think just about anyone would be swept away by Patricia's writing and the entertainment she provides. ...more

Erin captivates once again with her latest installment of the Dragons of Bloodfire series!
Samantha Vine left the world of dragons to pursue her independence and stay off the radar, but one step back on Voclain property and her world is changed forever. Her secret is out, she's basically being blackmailed, and to top it all off, she has to spend every day with the dragon who sets her heart ablaze.
Warrick has his hands full being lord of the Reds and trying to find a replacement for Godric Tredan on the Council. Even though he's probably the most modern of dragons alive--despite being older than dirt--he finds himself embroiled in the fallout of plots from eons ago. And it's all compounded by the interference of his steward and his steward's granddaughter, the one woman Warrick knows he should only protect, but can't help but desire above all others.
Awakened by Fire delivers a twist-filled miasma of wonderfulness full of danger, deceit, revenge, and passion, perfectly balanced with light-hearted dialogue and captivating characters that you won't want to leave when the last page is turned.
If you're a dragon shifter fan, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is book #2 of the series (book #1 is Tempted by Fire), but stands perfectly well on its own.
I've followed Erin's journey since her very first book, Shadow Bound. And her Reveler series has grabbed (and kept) a place in my top 5 favorite series of all time list. But this...this book just might be my favorite of Erin's to-date!

I will admit. I don't read a ton of regency romances. Not because I don't like them, just simply because I prefer the darker stuff. Christina McKnight has, once again, made me question that. This novella was beautifully done, captivating, enchanting, and perfectly paced.
Set in Christina's Lady Forsaken world with ties to Kathryn Le Veque's de Wolfe Pack novels, we meet Lady Aloria, a voluptuous 24 year old in her last season, wanting to simply get it over with and retire to the country estate for some peace. She's had nothing but bad luck with love, and is kind of over it all. In her last ball celebrating her birthday, she stumbles upon the Duke of Wolfeton. He is, of course, perfect. But he has secrets, and those secrets may just be enough to break her.
While Marcus came to the ball to get to know Lady Aloria in an attempt to garner the attention of her father and gain access to his ships to move some cargo and hopefully get himself out of the mountain of debt his father left him with, he never expected to feel such a pull towards the hostess. But ton gossip spreads fast, and his chances with her almost end up being over before they begin.
The Siege of Lady Aloria is a wonderfully written tale of gaining trust, learning to love (both others and oneself) and second chances. I highly recommend it!!...more

How do I even write this review?? This is super-duper bittersweet for me. Reveler quickly became one of my top 5 all-time favorite series and holds a place in my heart that may be hard to fill, so coming to the end of this journey was something I both looked forward to and dreaded.
Erin Kellison, in my personal opinion, is a master of dark urban fantasy/paranormal romance. I hesitate to even call her books "paranormal romance" sometimes because they feel more like urban fantasy with romantic elements to me--EXACTLY what I love. She never, ever stays "in the box" with her world building and storylines, she always knows how to push the envelope juuuuust enough, and between all of that, she has relatable characters that will stay with you forever, edge of your seat action and suspense, and just a touch of super steam romance. It's the ultimate book lover/paranormal junkie's dream.
O.K, enough gushing, on to thoughts on the finale...
As the serial built, we saw the world Darkside get increasingly more dangerous and our cast of characters fighting tooth and nail to protect those they loved and those who could not fight for themselves. Each book had a bit of everyone, but generally focused on a "main" character couple. Scrape is one big dark, dangerous, action-packed, crazy rollercoaster of epic proportions, and each and every couple not only plays their part but gets their HEA (though not without one hell of a battle). I sat there shaking my head going "how did she even do that and make me satisfied?"
I'm not sure I can break this down properly without spoilers, but I will try. The individuals in the waking world that want to make Darkside the 'new normal' have started to rise up and take power, paving the way for their god, the Sandman, to reign. The Sandman has risen, and is now wreaking havoc in the waking world while his nightmares terrorize revelers Darkside. Each and every couple dives in headfirst in a battle of strength and wits to attempt their defeat of the Oneiros and the Sandman, while protecting each other as they are able. The battle is not without casualties, however, and there are losses on both sides. How catastrophic those losses and changes are, ultimately, isn't known initially, and gradually works itself out as the book progresses.
Now that all of the books are out, even if you're not an episodic serial fan, I HIGHLY suggest this series. I cannot emphasize how much I recommend it. You won't even have to wait for the next installment. :) It's rife with amazing characters, unbelievable action, thrilling drama and suspense, some super sexy (yet admittedly subtle at times) romance, and a world and concept that you won't be able to shake because it's unique, amazing, and totally captivating.
Take a chance. Dream dangerously. I can say with confidence that you won't be disappointed...

Just in time for Halloween, we get a new vampire read. But don't expect just your dark and dangerous, it's sexy as sin, as well.
Cian DeMarco is a smoldery rockstar vampire living in San Francisco, playing with his band The Lost Boys (a group of vampires). His creation is a bit tragic, but his life is not. He loves the current age, his quiet, unassuming existence, doing what he loves in the city of his soul. Until he meets Magdalena and realizes there could be so, SO much more... He realizes there was something missing in his life and she's it.
Magdalena De la Rosa has a douchey boyfriend, but has temporarily left him behind to pursue her dream in San Francisco with her best friend. She's kind of let people walk over her a bit, even if she has taken the initiative to go and live her dream. When Cian enters her world, she begins to realize that sometimes you just can't plan for things. Sometimes they just happen and in the strangest of ways. And sometimes...it's worth it to throw caution to the wind. I will admit, I didn't like her at first. I thought she was a bit naive, but as the book continued, I saw her strengths immerge. I saw the lightbulbs go on and her decide to grab the reins.
Magdalena and Cian's relationship is full of tension. Slightly from within, of course (I mean he's a vampire, she's not sure how she feels about that, and they just met, what the heck do these irresistible feelings all mean!?), but more so from without. Cian's estranged maker is back and she wants "her boys"--Cian and his brother--back. And she's just crazy enough to do whatever it takes to get them (I mean seriously crazy!), and Maggie's stalker-ex has some major territorial issues and causes his own brand of trouble.
A thrilling and sexy thrill-ride. If you like your vampire fiction, I definitely suggest Tempted by a Vampire. Admittedly, there's nothing overtly unique about it (slightly difficult in a market that was saturated a handful of years ago with vampire paranormal romance), but in its own right it's exciting--likable characters, a titillating romance... And it's well done and well-written (plenty of quoteworthy moments!)
I think Susan has created a series that fans will be excited to jump into again and again (I know personally, there are some side characters that I am desperate to learn more about!). Go ahead, get tempted. ...more

An enchanting world of danger and darkness, Hunter captivates with her sexy tale of fallen gods, demons, and forbidden love that conquers all.
Imagine if you will a broken hero (you know the ones we all love!!), one that was tortured for ages and left a shell of a man. One who goes out of his way to hurt himself just so he can FEEL. That is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Blaez. He was left an emotionless shell, a Guardian with a single purpose--to kill. Now, imagine trying to write that! A hero without emotion. One with a very, very important job, with people who depend on him, and all the while he can only pretend... I was worried. After all, how do you properly portray a hero who has no soul, no emotion? I shouldn't have worried! I instantly liked Blaez, and when he me finally meets Darci and he literally blossoms it was something truly magickal to behold!
And then there's Darci. She never really felt whole herself. Sequestering herself away with her books, keeping almost everyone at arm's length. And then her quiet, ordered, proper life gets blown to hell by this sexy as sin Immortal, who quite frankly, is an a$$h*le. Watching her fight and claw to keep her order, but letting herself feel what just seemed to come naturally between her and Blaez was awesome. I really related to Darci, and I think a lot of other readers will, as well.
So all in all, what do you get with Breaking Fate? I pretty much said it all in my opening sentence, but it will definitely tug at your emotions. All of them. I laughed, I raged, I worried, I swooned (seriously, the quote-worthiness of this book is insane!) and when all was said and done, I felt utterly satisfied, and that's what you want when you read a good book, right? Some readers might not like the tennis match of emotions, but that's what I look for in a good read. I WANT to be made to feel, and all sorts of things...
I'm enchanted by Ms. Hunter's Fallen Guardians world and I cannot wait for more....more

When the truth finally comes out and the history behind those with psy powers is revealed, it becomes an even greater imperative to keep the worlds separate. Unfortunately, the darkness has been ingrained in those who feel it's their duty to uphold, and the battle rages on.
Each book focuses on a couple and their conflicts as they fight for what they believe, have their worlds literally turned upside down in cases, fall in love, and conquer [almost] all as the truth is revealed and dangers escalate.
Iron Portal is an exciting and fun series and I definitely recommend it! I can't wait to keep reading in Rebel's Desire, book #4, also available now to find out what's next for each side of the portal......more

It's very hard to keep reOur Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Vivacious Valkyrie and Pack Alpha - Marta & Chelle:
Dark Crime by Christine Feehan (Marta):
It's very hard to keep readers engaged as a series gets longer and it's a trap that many authors fall into. What worked so well in the beginning can become stale and readers constantly demand to be surprised. Ms. Feehan's Dark series has been such an interesting one full of intense emotions, beautiful narrative and incendiary heat. This story is shorter than most and yet is still full of passion and a few surprises and, of course, there's that little thing of claiming a life mate!
I really liked the beginning of this story and felt so much empathy for the heroine Blaze, whose life has been brutally changed forever. She deals with her grief by taking control of her own destiny, but a chance call to a stranger sees yet another rock thrown her way and this time it's a landslide ! The male who answers her call is Maksim and he's definitely not human he us Carpathian and now Blaze has fallen into his world and there's no way Maksim will ever let her leave.
Ms Feehan has somehow stepped away from her previous style and this felt far more modern with a fresh twist. If honest at first I didn't realise it was a Carpathian story and the plot was fuelled by unexpected alliances. Diehard fans will enjoy this but I think those who perhaps felt jaded might also see a fresh approach to tempt them back. I'm happy to report the story was not bogged down by excessive chanting (which many readers find repetitive) and as this story arc continues I know I wil be back for more!
Dead by Twilight by Maggie Shayne (Chelle):
I've been a fan of the Wings in the Night series since book #1, continuing with Wings in the Night: Reborn and Twilight Guardians this last year. I can, without a doubt, say that this was one of my favorite Wings in the Night tales, to date.
Maggie brings us another of her feisty, fiery, independent heroines with Chloe, and I found myself comparing her a bit to Rachel de Luca from Maggie's Brown & de Luca stories. She's just a heroine you love to love and her interaction with the hero was witty, sexy, and full of intrigue.
Overall, the story was smart, fun, and gripping. I am so, SO excited Wings in the Night is back and properly reborn! :)
Cimarron Spirit by Lori Herter (Marta):
This is quite a short read and it's by an author who is completely new to me. Our heroine is Annie an archeologist who, whilst investigating ruins, stumbles upon the find of the century, a vampire! Rafael de la Vega waited a long time for someone to ease his lonely undead life and although at first he wants nothing more than to see the back of the meddling woman as he gets to know more about Annie it's clear that what they both feel could be so much more than mere attraction.
Now nothing is ever that simple and if it was where would the story be? You see Annie is caught up in the midst of the dreaded triangle as Brett, who owns the land she digs on has proposed to her but is it love or just convenience ? Annie proudly proclaims the she is " her own woman " but can she make the right choice for her? A life with a family in the sun or whatever a vampire can offer and then there's the slight problem of Rafaels past and it's a lot closer than Annie realises!
I must point out that I did feel this was very reminiscent of Ms Feehan's work with similar names used and even shifting. I wonder if this was written possibly as a homage or even as fan fiction? Either way it did for this reader end a touch abruptly and I would have liked just a little more but as a quick read to while away an hour it hit the spot perfectly.
OVERALL: We would recommend this anthology, especially for fans of the authors' series, those who discovered Christine and Maggie's work by first reading Lori Herter, and, of course, any fan of vampire fiction. ...more
Shadow Touched is a collection of the previously released Shadow Touched novellas Shadow Touch, Shadow Play, and Shadow Hunt with one surprise. The fiShadow Touched is a collection of the previously released Shadow Touched novellas Shadow Touch, Shadow Play, and Shadow Hunt with one surprise. The final story, Shadow Burn is also included.
In the first part, Shadow Touch, we are introduced to Cam, a Segue Institute employee where they study Shadow, the magic from Twilight (Twilight is home to the Fae). Ellie, our heroine, has a unique problem. Her shadow can exist separately from her, but is much more feral. She’s having trouble controlling her shadow and goes to Segue for help. While there, she and Cam develop more than just a researcher/subject relationship.
Shadow Play picks up a few months after Shadow Touch. Cam and Ellie are working on their relationship and still trying to find a way to control her shadow, and Ellie is having a very hard time accepting who and what she is. She really kind of hates her shadow self. When Segue is called in to help rescue a child who is lured into Twilight, the action and unique storytelling take over full force, and then we meet the new supe-group in our wonderful world, the Mages.
Shadow Hunt is slightly darker than the first two, and even more action-packed and suspenseful. Cam and Ellie are dealing with the Mages and things get interesting. Cam is having trouble controlling the Shadow within him, and Ellie is still unsure what will happen with her relationship with Cam, especially since her shadow now plays a predominant role and her shadow self and Cam have their own unique type of bond.
Shadow Burn, the final, previously unpublished work was the perfect culmination of it all… Loads of action, emotion, and heart round out this wonderful bundle.
The Shadow series and its spin-offs remain one of my absolute favorites and I highly recommend this book (and Erin’s others) to all UF and PNR readers. ...more

O.K, I am going to preface this review by saying that I don't normally like collaborative series. It's just too difficult to make them feel seamless to me. Add in the fact that in order to hit proper page count they normally have to be novella length for each piece--which usually means those insta-lust and love situations that always make me cringe--and I don't always set out to buy them. With the Branded Pack series, however, I don't feel ANY of that, none of it, and after each and every installment, all I'm left with is a deep desire for more!
Abandoned and Unseen are stories 3 and 4 (book #2) of the Branded Pack series, and while it is a running series, they can absolutely be read as standalones. The worldbuilding is set up enough in each story that even if you were to pick this up without having read Stolen and Forgiven you would be just fine.
The series just keeps getting better and better... More deep and intriguing characters, more compelling storylines...
In Abandoned, we fine all 3 Packs being forced into the same compound. Not only do each of the shifter Packs have to deal with being forced into captivity, now they have to deal with sharing their very limited space with other predators and people with very differing personalities, habits, etc. Anya is a single mother raising her 2 adorable bear cubs, and her territory border butts up against that of an aggravating--if insanely sexy--jaguar, Cole. Despite Anya's very apparent dislike of Cole (mostly stemming from the fact that she wants him and doesn't WANT to want him) they're forced to work together when Anya's children are kidnapped.
The chemistry between Anya and Cole was undeniable, but it was fun to see them both try until they could no longer fight the pull and simply let the fireworks happen. And boy did they ever...
In Unseen, we get our first glimpse into the Unseen Pack--those rare shifters who avoided capture and captivity by the humans. Those without the brands and the collar. And they're all just a little bit...more, as well. Nicole is a wolf shifter still grieving the loss of her son. The main goal in the pit of her being is revenge. Some way, somehow. When she finally thinks her moment has arrived--on the anniversary of her son's death no less--she's thwarted by a very persistent and utterly captivating (and rare) polar bear shifter. Tucker knows immediately that Nicole is meant for him, and he will do anything to make it happen. Even let her put herself into danger, something that goes against every bone in his very large and sexy body.
Outside of the amazing story between Tucker and Nicole, we get glimpses into what I HOPE will be our next tale(s)--Mira and Sinclair, some more SAU secrets, a deeper understanding into how everything happened with the shifters' captivity in the first place, and more.
Abandoned and Unseen were fantastic installments in the Branded series and I cannot wait to see what happens next. Carrie Ann and Alexandra have a winner with this series. #happyshifterlover ...more
Erin busts into the hot and popular dragon shifter sub-genre with a uniOur Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Chelle -Actual rating 4.5 Skulls
Erin busts into the hot and popular dragon shifter sub-genre with a unique take on the mythos and captivates readers with strong and witty characters, a millennia old mystery, blood feuds, slayers, and so much more.
The world building is well thought out and beautifully built, building on that age old adage" Here there be dragons" and bringing it into today's world.
Thane and Emerson are a super fun couple. I felt she was a little naive at first, but I absolutely loved her spunk. And Thane... Can I just say 'sigh.' Their chemistry was intense and sexy, and the way he went from wanting to be done with his long life to wanting to live... for her... was utterly enchanting. Beautifully written in a way that made the reader feel like they were falling in love.
Erin sticks to her dark and dangerous roots and gives us plenty of danger, action, and twists and turns, and the supporting characters left me wanting (and hoping) that we'd find out more.
All in all it was utterly enthralling and I couldn't put it down. If you're a shifter fan, a dragon fan, or even just a paranormal romance and/or urban fantasy fan, I think you will utterly enjoy Tempted by Fire and I cannot wait for the next book in the Dragons of Bloodfire series!...more
Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Chelle:
Another enchanting installment from Maggie Shayne's legendary vampire world of vampires, ChosenOur Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Chelle:
Another enchanting installment from Maggie Shayne's legendary vampire world of vampires, Chosen, and the evil DPI, now made even richer by the addition of the Offspring and another new group that joins the party at the end of this installment.
Maggie Shayne has always captivated my attention with her Wings in the Night world, and Twilight Vendetta was no different as it took me on an action-packed thrill ride of danger, betrayal, loss, love, and growth.
Twilight Vendetta picks up where Twilight Guardians left off with the discovery of the Offspring, the destruction of the ship, The Anemone, and the vampires running for their lives from the evil government agency known as the DPI. While I would suggest reading Twilight Guardians before reading Twilight Vendetta, Maggie wrote it in such a way that things are laid out for you to follow. You just don't get the emotional investment of everything that happened with Twilight Guardians, and trust me, it's not something you want to miss. :)
Emma isn't your normal, everyday girl. She's an adrenaline junkie, and one of the Chosen--humans with a rare blood condition that stunts their life and the only ones able to be made into vampires. She also grew up with a vampire for a mother, and genius for a father, but her life has been all about living, in between doing everything she can to find out what happened to her mother when she was just a child. Her life has also been consistently tied to a certain handsome vampire who has saved her more times than she even knows about.
Devlin is a vampire with a tragic past. And he's not much for people. He's a loner, and his main goal is ensuring the survival of his kind. Unfortunately, a troublesome, beautiful Chosen keeps popping up every so often, disrupting his solitude and making him feel things he doesn't want to be feeling.
As circumstances force Emma and Devlin to work together to save Devlin's friends, the children the vampires saved from the Anemone, and Emma's father, they can longer fight their feelings for each other and sparks ignite.
As the DPI gets more and more corrupt and ruthless in their strides to take down the vampire race, secrets are revealed, alliances are formed, and some big changes must be made to ensure survival. The world-building and story arc of Wings in the Night: Reborn is unfolding beautifully, and I cannot wait to see what happens next!
