There were times when the story was fine and even sweet, and then it would turn into something else and I would consider putting the book away for a while. Some parts were just laughable, like the way some of the characters were so obviously taken from Twilight...the fact that she said "oh my" about every 2-3 pages...the fact that she was able to have mind blowing sex while lossing her viginity. Yeah right.
I was not a huge fan of the S&M stuff. Ana constantly talked about her self conscious calling her a Ho for accepting gifts from a man who wants her to sign a sex contract, or would tell her to run for the hills, or that what was going on what just not right. Dammit! Her self conscious was right. I just wanted to shake this girl. After Christain spanks her for the first time and she cried because she hated it so much, I almost put the book down for good. I hated it too, and really didn't want to read that she was going back to him. He wasn't beating her per se, but she was still starting to do things that were way out of her comfort zone (and what would have been my comfort zone so it was hard for me to relate) for this man she barely knows, and refuses to share his past. I know some of that was to draw out the story, we learn about his as she does, but it was taking forever to get "more" from him.
I had expected by the end of the book there would be some sort of reveal about what his mother did to him the screwed him up so bad, or how "Mr. Robinson" had helped him by making him her sub for years. When he hit her with the belt and she screamed "Don't touch me!" I thought that was going to be it. He was going to say "Now you know how I feel, because my mother did that to me." When there was no disclosure, I was really glad that Ana decided to leave him, no matter how much it hurt her. It broke my heart for her, but it was the right decision.
I can see why people dive right into the next book though. Knowing there are 2 more, it automatically makes you wonder what will happen next to the characters. It's like going to the next chapter. I am sure that I will pick it up soon to find out for myself, but for now I think I am ready for a break from Mr. Grey and his Red Room of Pain....more

Most people either love this book or hate it. The characters are not always very likeable, it isn't a bright happy romance. It is the other side of the love story coin. The character are all too stobborn to admit what they want and embrace it. My only issue with the story (and I find this with a lot of older classics) is that I fell like I need just one more chapter or an epliloge to give me a better feeling of where the characters are going next. Otherwise it's great classic....more
