But it does get around to it, you're just going to have to be really patient as the author connects the dots to the overall big picture of this story. Tarsey and her husband Steve, decide that now is a good time to make that big move and buy a house. The perfect neighborhood seems to be the place to go, but everything is not what it seems. Trouble is already brewing between two neighbors, and the HOA...well, to put it lightly, they are a hot mess. But there's more going on with a mysterious "stray" cat and what really happened to his previous owner. Can Tarsey navigate it all without falling into the traps of emotional drama? Or will she get sucked in? A CATastrophic Neighborhood is an average read when it comes to cozy mysteries. The conversations are odd at times to say the least, and some of the characters's behavior is also...strange, but it's still an okay book. This book needed more lively characters, because the main character - Tarsey, she's unfortunately pretty dull. She brings little to no excitement to the story. The friend that she makes in the neighborhood is more engaging than she is, but she's quite emotional and over the top at times. I wanted more from her. I wanted her to engage me and keep me interested in the story overall. As it is, this story is okay. It's not great, not sure I'd read another book in this series, but it does have potential. This book feels more like a trial run or testing the waters. With some work, this book could be better, but as it is...it's just...meh. 3.5 out of 5 stars...more

Vampires and Villains is the second book in Elizabeth Pantley's Magical Mystery Book Club series. This fun cozy mystery will have you page-turning allVampires and Villains is the second book in Elizabeth Pantley's Magical Mystery Book Club series. This fun cozy mystery will have you page-turning all the way to the end as the crew embarks on yet another thrilling book adventure. Paige and her book club friends are back in this second installment of the series. A new addition to the group is coming, and boy is this one unexpected! Not unexpected as in, there is a new addition. It's just that when you read his name, you won't be expecting what you get. It is rather humorous when this new character interacts with Zell. You'd think that the two of them are now in a competition for who knows more. LOL! It's a lot of fun to read. Impatience gets the better of the group this time and off they go on a cruise ship adventure! All is well and fine until murder strikes! The author is really going to keep you guessing as to who the dangerous character is. I kept thinking it was one character, because of all of her dramatics, but just hold your horses and keep reading. You will simply devour this book. The escapades of the characters are absolutely hilarious and will keep you coming back for more. I know that as you read you'll wonder - who will choose to stay behind? Well, that, too is a surprise. If you enjoyed the first book you're not going to want to miss out on this one. I highly recommend it. I'm rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I can't wait to find out what happens next, because there is never a dull moment with these characters. ...more
Stitch, Bake, Die! is the 10th book in Lois Winston’s Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery series and this story is one twisted tale. For a whodunit mysStitch, Bake, Die! is the 10th book in Lois Winston’s Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery series and this story is one twisted tale. For a whodunit mystery, this book kept me trying to figure out who the killer was and their motive behind their actions. I can’t help but empathize with Anastasia as she’s “volunteered” for a conference that has been literally thrown together at the last minute. But when the organizer has loads of money – well the wheels get greased and things move quickly. Anastasia and her co-worker/friend Cloris are expecting things to be pretty mundane, but they quickly find themselves involved in a murder that has more complexities than one of her more complicated needlework projects. Stitch, Bake, Die! while part of a series, in my opinion, can be read as a stand-alone novel. The story focuses on Anastasia’s current mystery. While the author does touch on things that have happened in the past, I don’t feel that I was missing much to where I felt I needed to have read the first book to really enjoy this series. Anastasia is an interesting character, and I have to say I love the Jessica Fletcher references. This story is so layered with mystery and twists it kept me page-turning to find out what happens next. I was quick to eye certain characters as possible suspects. I will admit that I was disappointed that not even Anastasia and Cloris called the police concerning the initial death. It does level up the mystery of the story as you just don’t know what’s going to happen next. Though I was quick to learn why Marlene had few friends really. The ladies in this book are scary! LOL! I can safely say these women would probably give you a glare of death if you assumed they’d be “sweet little grandmas baking cookies” somewhere. LOL! The ending of this book, for me, is a bit abrupt, but I enjoyed the entire book from beginning to end. I love that it kept me guessing as to who was behind it all, but the twists are really worth it. I’m rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. If you enjoy a good cozy mystery then you’re going to love this book. ...more

Ivy is back with a new drama that has as many layers as a delicious croissant. The holiday season is here and that means work, work, work! Ivy learns that Olaya has taken on a last-minute Christmas party for the rising star – Eliza Fox! Ivy gets double-duty though when she’s also hired to photograph the event. It all sounds like fun, and a good payday, but no one expects murder to dampen the festivities. As the truth comes out the list of suspects quickly grows, but who really had it out for the unscrupulous reporter and why? A Murder Yule Regret is an engaging novel that will put you in the holiday spirit, have you craving delicious baked treats, and striving alongside Ivy as she works to solve a dangerous mystery. Ivy is really going to be busy in this book! She’s jumping from helping Olaya prepare for one last-minute fiesta to another! She’s confronted with the mystery of the death of a tabloid reporter whom she heard arguing with a man who sounded less than pleased with an article he printed. But is there something to this argument she overheard? Ivy finds herself establishing a tentative friendship with Eliza, but is there more to the story than she could possibly know? This book is truly well-written and just when you think you are making progress on a level, you’re hit with another level that you didn’t see coming. A Murder Yule Regret is a page-turner that will keep you coming back for more. I will say I’m thankful that my least favorite character isn’t as focused on with this book. LOL! I respect York to an extent, but I honestly cannot tolerate that man! He does amp up the drama in certain places though. This book has so much to enjoy and I love that once again, the author throws more than a couple of curveballs my way to throw me off the track of figuring out the culprit. This book more than earns 5 out of 5 stars from me. A tantalizing mystery, delicious treats with some recipes included, and an ending that will have you reaching for a tissue. Prepare to meet Evelyn, a young woman enjoying her life in London, but then she gets news of the death of her biological mother. She has no idea what she’s going to in find in this small English village, but she’s ging to find herself trying to solve two murders, come to grips with who she is, and the uniqueness of the townsfolk. Murder at Magic cakes Cafe is truly an enjoyable story from beginning to end. This story is full of drama, and a good amount of humor that will leave you eager for more. Evelyn is an interesting character. I really mean that! I mean, how many people do you know would climb a tree in a storm to rescue a cat? I mean, I love my cats, but that’s not something you’ll ever find me doing. LOL! Plus, Evelyn gets to experience quite a shock for her troubles. When I say that, I mean besides learning of the death of her biological mother. The humor of this story quickly captured my attention and I eagerly dove deeper into this story. As Evelyn is experiencing this new town that her mother called home, I love that Evelyn begins “seeing” things that she believes are impossible. The various clues that are scattered about for Evelyn to pick up on concerning the town are perfectly done. Evelyn thinks she’s seeing things/hallucinating, but she’s seeing the residents for what they really are. Also, the air of mystery that swirls throughout this book is so well done! Trying to puzzle out who the killer is was definitely a feat. I honestly began to suspect a particular character, but then the big reveal went in a totally different direction! This book is a good start to this series and definitely lives up to the cozy angle with a potential blooming romance and hints of another romance to bloom. I enjoyed this story, and I look forward to the next book in this series. I’m rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. ...more

Christmastime has come in Fallingbrook, and while all are looking forward to the festivities, no one is prepared for the disaster that lurks just over the horizon. Emily is hoping that things will finally progress in the right direction with her handsome detective friend, Brent, but things might have to be put on pause when a tour bus accident and then murder takes place. How did the bus crash? Was drinking involved? How does the driver end up dead, in the town square in the middle of the night under an ice sculpture? The motives begin to pile up and the suspects are many. Can Emily with help from her friends, who are cops and EMTs, help her discover the truth? Deck the Donuts is the first book I’ve read by this author, but it will not be the last! This book is an absolutely delicious delight. Emily is a tactful young woman, who despite suffering loss in her life, still has an overall positive outlook on life. She’s an engaging character, and the sweet stirrings of romance leave me hopeful for her to get that “happy ending.” The variety of characters the author gives me in this book helps it become truly engaging. I couldn’t help feeling surprised at how unsympathetic the passengers were when the driver is discovered dead. I get being angry and upset, but these people were as cold as the snow drifting from the sky. I was eager to discover who the killer was but prepare for some disappointments along the way when leads fall apart. LOL! There is a lot to enjoy in this book. Romance, tasty treats, a delicious mystery, and plenty of twists to keep you on your toes. This book is a true page-turner. The beginning was a little slow for me, but once I got into this story I was devouring it like my favorite yeasty donut treat. If you have read the previous books and enjoyed them you’re not going to want to miss out on this installment. If you are curious about this book, and the cover has caught your eye...what are you waiting for?? Grab this book! You’re not going to want to miss out. A Wild Ride is the 5th book in Jane Tesh’s Madeline Maclin Mystery series and this book is an absolute delight to read. This is the first book that I A Wild Ride is the 5th book in Jane Tesh’s Madeline Maclin Mystery series and this book is an absolute delight to read. This is the first book that I have read by this author, but the characters are so enjoyable that it won’t be the last. Despite the fact that most of the relationships are already established, there is enough freshness of new characters and new connections to make this book easy to dive into. It seems that Madeline has a new case – several paintings at the local gallery have been stolen! A beautiful creation of her own being one of them. It seems that someone is out to make the head of the gallery look incompetent. But the questions arise...who and why? This story is full of quite a few twists, turns, and even some dangers from Jerry’s old life as a con man. You just never really know what is going to happen next, and the twists do a great job in guiding without completely throwing you for a complete loop. I love the variety of characters in this book. Each character, no matter how minor brings something unique to the story to really make it engaging and enjoyable. I like how certain characters come together to help Hayden come out of his shell and come back to life with his writings. It’s such a beautiful thing and is truly heartwarming. I love how the author gives me just the right amount of small-town drama to mix in with the main mystery. The sprinkling in of smaller mysteries really keeps this book entertaining as Madeline works to piece together the main mystery of what happened to the missing paintings. This book is such a delightful novel that blends together to create a beautiful painting of a story. There is just enough drama, danger, and humor to make this book one that readers of this series will truly enjoy. The author drops a really big clue in just the right place, that even if you’re not an art connoisseur then you’ll notice and I recommend you hold on with both hands. LOL! This book is a delightful puzzle to piece together and I look forward to reading more by this author in the future. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. Even though this is the first book I’ve read by this author the characters felt warm and familiar and I was easily drawn in. I look forward to reading more by this author and Madeline’s mysterious adventures. If you have read the books previously in this series then you’re not going to want to miss out on this installment. ...more
Dough or Die is the fifth book in Winnie Archer's A Bread Shop Mystery series. While this book is part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone noDough or Die is the fifth book in Winnie Archer's A Bread Shop Mystery series. While this book is part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone novel. This book takes readers on a plot-driven mystery to discover the truth behind the near-death hit and run of a cameraman in front of Yeast of Eden bakery. With the encouragement from the local sheriff Ivy is on the hunt to figure out who tried to kill him, and why. But she's going to have her own issues from the past to come and put her on the lookout for her own dangers to come. Dough or Die really caught my attention since I am an avid baker myself so I was excited to read this book and really enjoy the ride. The book all in all is a good read. The book is easy to get into and follow along with what is going on with the different characters. What I enjoyed the most about this book is the mystery element of it all. The cameraman is the victim of a hit and run and then the legwork of trying to discover what could possibly drive (no pun intended) to want to harm him. He seems to have such a clean record, but it's not the past that is trackable that holds the answers in this case. I love the small-town vibe of this book and how there are some real-life tie ins as well. It helps to elevate the story in places to really keep readers engaged. The pacing of the story is good, but I also found it a bit flat. There isn't a lot of drama and tension that I have come to expect and anticipate with a mystery, even a cozy mystery. It left me a bit disappointed. Since this book is fifth in a series, all of the relationships have already been established and so there is very little of that build in this book, so it left me feeling a bit disconnected from their relationships. There are some references to past situations and issues as well, but the author doesn't go in-depth with them. I'm sure so as to not confuse the readers on things that don't truly get addressed or have any connection to the storyline now. I was also disappointed that we didn't get a proper description of Billy's fiancee Em earlier in the book. We get multiple descriptions of Ivy, but only when Ivy asks Em how she is going to do her hair for her wedding do I get any clue that she's a black woman. Overall, I enjoyed this book, but it wasn't a really gripping mystery that had me frantically page-turning to learn the truth behind all the events that happened in this book. I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. The truth behind all the tragedy is truly heartbreaking, but the ending is decent enough. I may go back and read the series from the beginning and maybe I'll enjoy it more. But for those who enjoy a nice quiet cozy mystery with just a hint of danger here and there then this book would be a perfect fit for them. Plus, the author includes a couple of delicious sounding bread recipes at the end as well. ...more

This book is a fast-paced wild ride of a story thatFireworks, A Firecracker & Foul Play is the fifth book in D.E. Haggerty’s Death By Cupcake series. This book is a fast-paced wild ride of a story that follows Anna and her two friends along as they race against the clock to prove that Anna’s fiancé Logan isn’t the guilty party in the murder of the gang leader before her big wedding happening on the 4th of July. Fireworks, A Firecracker & Foul Play is the first book that I have read by D.E. Haggerty, but this book can easily be read as a stand-alone novel. The author hits the ground running with this story and doesn’t let off the gas all the way to the end. Anna is eager for her wedding to take place and claim her man for life, but things aren’t going to go as planned. Anna is a real firecracker! She’s small like a pixie and her bright hair color adds to the effect, but she’s not one to take things lying down. So when her wedding preparations are threatened she goes into full steam ahead mode to solve a murder. Overall I enjoyed this story and how quickly it moves. It’s fun to read and you get plenty of cupcakes to go with it. I have to admit that I’m amused at how Anna’s friends are so addicted to the cupcakes. Anna basically has to keep an eye on them or have cupcakes set aside so that they don’t eat the ones that she has set aside for “bribes.” LOL! It makes me wonder… just how good are these cupcakes? I mean…I like cake…but I can only deal with so much of it before I’m sick of it. Now cookies on the other hand…LOL! Now, while this book is a lot of fun I felt that Anna was a bit over the top. As I’ve not read the other books in this series I’m not sure if this is her normal character style or if this is her hyped up because of her upcoming nuptials. There are times in the book when she comes off as more than a little juvenile and I wonder…just how old is this girl? There are moments in the book where she really comes off as a teenager when I’m sure that she has to be in her 20s. My only other complaint is that there is no bad guy tie in. It just happens out of the blue, which I was a bit disappointed by. I’m pleased to say that I did not notice any editorial errors in this book, so that is a definite plus to this story. All in all, I am rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. For readers who have read this series to this point then I am sure that you are going to enjoy this book. For new readers, this book can be read as a stand-alone, but I think that I will be going back and checking out the first books and the characters that they focus on and see if this is just how everyone is. Haha! If you like a fun, fast-paced cozy mystery with truly animated characters then I encourage you to pick this book up. ...more
Shredding the Evidence is a cozy mystery by Daryl Wood Gerber that will hook you from the beginning with descriptions of tasty mouth-watering treats aShredding the Evidence is a cozy mystery by Daryl Wood Gerber that will hook you from the beginning with descriptions of tasty mouth-watering treats and a who-done-it murder that will keep you page-turning to the very end as the author expertly shrouds the killer in mystery until the surprising twist of a reveal. The author creates a backdrop in Crystal Cove where the citizens are getting ready for Food Bowl Week, and man do I wish I could have been there myself. People are excited about the festivities and food, but there is trouble brewing with a foodie reporter/reviewer is making waves and causing problems, but apparently she’s about to push one button too many and her troubles are coming home to roost. Shredding the Evidence is the ninth book in Daryl Wood Gerber’s “Cookbook Nook” series, but trust me when I say…this book can be read as a stand-alone. The author provides readers with a cast of characters in the front of the book so that you know who exactly to expect and who’s who. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I’ll admit…I skipped the character index. Haha! I like to learn the characters as I go, and I really just wanted to get to the story and see if it could be read as a stand-alone. The characters, while their relationships are well established easily engaged me and pulled me into the story. Now, I have to say this – when I read the story was set in Crystal Cove my first thought was…well, where’s Scooby and the gang? I couldn’t resist since I’ve watched almost everything Scooby-Doo. The author does an excellent job of pulling the reader into the story before the murder even happens. You feel like you could cross paths with the characters at any moment with this book. The author sets the stage piece by piece before dropping the murder on you and then it’s not just the murder that you get to watch be dealt with. The author also throws in personal drama with each of the characters that help to move the story along. Jenna is such an engaging character and she captures my attention the most as she runs a business, manages her love life with her fiancée, and works hard to solve a murder and help her friends. I pride myself on figuring out who committed the crime before the big reveal, but the author, I have to say, is a master of misdirection and keeps me in the dark until the end. I loved it. My only gripe about this book would be Bailey. The author paints her as a “force of nature” but my goodness! She is a freight-train of nature! When she’s determined to grill someone she GRILLS someone! I couldn’t help but be a bit disappointed in Jenna for not standing up to her when she becomes more than a “little” overzealous in her efforts to clear her husband. I wasn’t too keen on how she bulldogged people for answers and skirted the line if not crossing it by even a hair. I think I’d have felt a bit better if she had at least apologized later. Honestly though… at the end of the day, I loved this book. There is so much to like about it. The characters are engaging, the storyline is easy to follow, the mystery hooks you, and the suspense keeps you coming back until the big reveal. If you love a good cozy mystery with lots of tasty treats then this is the book to pick up. If you have read the previous books in this series and enjoyed them then don’t hesitate and grab this book ASAP! I can’t wait to go back and read the other books by this author. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. Job well done to the author! You’ve got yourself a new fan! ...more

The author takes readers on a thrilling ride as a young woman finds herself on the wrong side of the law after a heist that doesn’t go as planned. Quinn has been running scams with her da for a while now, but it seems that the luck of the gypsy is about to run out and the long arm of the law is going to reach out and grab her. Travels of Quinn is the first book that I have read by Sasscer Hill and the author did a great job hooking me into the story and having me page-turn to the end. I couldn’t get enough of this book and Quinn’s story. I like that Quinn is different from her family. She gets a thrill out of accomplishing most jobs that she takes on, but the author quickly shows that this last job…Quinn has a prick of consciousness. Homelife isn’t that great either. The author gives me two characters that I immediately despise. They are essentially the perfect villains, but there is more than meets the eye with this book. I’ll admit that there were some moments of where I got a bit annoyed with Quinn because she seemed too naïve despite being a con-artist/thief. You’d think that she would have shed that with the way that she had to work a scam in order to come out the winner. She has moments of seeming like a weak character, but taking a step back I saw that it was just the author’s way of making the character come to life more and be more relatable to the situation. This story is truly fascinating and the twists that the author writes in kept me eager for more. I loved the unexpected moments, but then I was disappointed that Quinn lets her guard down after the many red flags waving in her face. I will say this – I am looking forward to Quinn’s next story as she is determined to find her mother and get answers. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. This murder mystery thriller is a great story that will leave you craving more as Quinn finds herself in one predicament after another. The storyline is well done and hard to put down. Get ready for thrills, questions, deceptions, and murder. ...more

Prepare to embark on another mystery with Emma and Leslie while thPoison by Punctuation by Kelley Kate is book two in her Chalkboard Outlines series. Prepare to embark on another mystery with Emma and Leslie while they work to discover who is sending threatening notes, the mysterious and tragic death of a teenage girl, and the three new teachers who seem less than interested in engaging in any type of friendship with Emma and the other teachers. Punctuation by Poison is the first book that I have read by Kelley Kate and while it is the second book in this series it can be read as a stand-alone novel. The author does a fantastic job hooking me into the book from the beginning with the prologue. I was hooked and then heartbroken in no time flat. Then I was a bit thrown. Haha! I say this because the prologue is essentially a couple of days in advance and then the author steps back a couple of days to set the stage as to what is about to break the peace at the high school starting with graffiti. The overall storyline is interesting, though it does slow down in places which at times made it a bit of a slog to keep going. During the slowdown moments, I tend to rely on the characters to keep me engaged, but I didn’t find myself overly liking Emma. My biggest issue with her was her wishy-washy attitude and the hammed-up Southern charm. I understand her hamming it up, but I feel like she seriously overdoes it which causes me to look down on her. Then in a couple of scenes she’s all gungho to go investigate…by herself! But when she has back-up, all of a sudden she’s wanting to act like NOW it’s super dangerous. I think I expected her to be more of a “take-charge” kind of character because that’s what I’m used to when it comes to cozy mystery novels I’ve read before. I found myself gravitating more towards her friend Leslie as she was more outgoing and engaging. I will say this though when the story is engaging…it is ENGAGING! I was page-turning to learn what happens next and the author does a fantastic job keeping me in the dark as to who the killer is. The pieces are there, but the author keeps the exact clues hidden away so as to not tip off readers as to who the guilty party is. I like the multiple layers of mystery involved in this book as well. You don’t just get the murder mystery and the threats. You get a surprise mystery thrown later into the story, and a tragic backstory to go along with it. My only other issue with this story is Emma’s beau…Hunter. I’m sorry, but I just did not like him that much. He may be a sweet guy, but he’s got some serious issues and I couldn’t deal with that. He immediately has an attitude the first time he’s around Will which I honestly found bizarre. To me, it screamed that he was insecure from jump. Hunter fluctuates between a whipped puppy, to a petulant teenager, to a doting boyfriend. I really need him to work on himself and get over his past issues, because at this point…tons of flowers or not…Emma deserves better in my opinion. While I struggled with the sensibleness and maturity of a couple of the characters, I enjoyed this book’s storyline overall. So I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. I think that I’ll hang in there with this author and see where things go with these characters. I’m hopeful that they’ll grow, develop, and mature in future books. ...more

Murder in the Moonshine by Maureen Klovers is the first book that I have read by this author and I enjoyed it immensely! While this book is part of a series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone novel which I absolutely appreciate. This book gives me a perfect recipe of a story. I get a taste of everything that is Rita Calabrese. I see her as a journalist, chef, mother, and sleuth. They all blend together so well that I was hooked on this book from the very first page. Rita is such an engaging character and I adore how she handles sticky situations. She’s determined enough to get to the root of a story, but finessed enough to not be annoying about it! I’ve read so many books of where even I got annoyed when a character pursues a line of questioning and you know they’re treading on thin ice, and then the person being questioned clams up. Rita artfully questions, finds hints in their answers and expertly sifts through to the truth and/or pouncing on tiny slip-ups. I couldn’t help but be surprised in admiration at how she picked up on tiny hints that I ignored or would have completely missed in certain cases. She’s quite a humorous character in certain moments as well. When her daughter catches her “spying” on her at her job she handles it so well! Most individuals when they use the “I lost/dropped an earring” flub it entirely, but you can tell Rita is a pro. I couldn’t help but laugh. I love that this story has more than one mystery to puzzle through. Of course, there is the main mystery of the murder, but there is so much more that comes together to weave a bigger picture and show that there is more going on than meets the eye. I will admit that at first I was irritated with Ana’s attitude towards Rita. But the author has Rita handle that whole situation expertly. The fun minor mystery of who is “The Dude” literally had my jaw dropping and giggling at the same time. My only real complaint is directed to the Italian phrases used through the story. Some I was able to decipher or piece together due to the context of the situation, but I would have liked it if there had been a section with translations of what was said. I only say this because I felt like I missed out on bits and pieces of the story from not fully knowing or understanding what was being said. At the end of the day, I am rating this book a solid 5 out of 5 stars. Rita is such an engaging character and I love how she is there for those she cares about. She has such a good heart and she is absolutely someone that I would love to know in real life. When it comes to a mystery she is determined to discover the truth, and she does so in a way that brings all of the truth to light. I absolutely applaud the author on keeping me in the dark as to who the murder was until the right moment. I tend to pride myself on discovering the guilty party before the big reveal, but I do love a good book that keeps me guessing to the end. This author has just gained a faithful reader and I look forward to reading more of her work in the near future! I tip my hat and say a hearty job well done on a fantastic mystery novel! ...more

Dodie is on vacation with her boyfriend, supposed to be having a romantic time together when a series of people she knows or used to know make a myriad of appearances. She witnesses a bit of an encounter between her ex-boyfriend and an old "friend" of his and then within less than 24 hours said "friend" is found dead. The suspect? Her ex-boyfriend. Who's guilty and why? What's the truth and what is really going on? No More Time is the first book that I have read by this author, but I thought that this book sounded fun and as I am an avid reader of cozy mysteries I was sure that I would take to this book as a cat takes to a ball of yarn. I will admit that the drama and suspense in this novel are well done. I love that the author doesn't give overt or covert clues as to who the murderer really is. There are some clues dropped here and there that make you suspicious of certain individuals, but that's only because of their demeanor and shifting personalities. The supporting characters, for me, really bring this story to life and add a nice flair of entertainment throughout. They pop up when they are most needed and really bring this story a nice splash of character and interest with their antics and issues. The storyline flows nicely and overall keeps me engaged as I read along to discover who really killed Vincent and why they did it. I had some suspicions as the story moved along, a couple of times I went the wrong direction, but I enjoyed the fun of trying to figure it out before the author did the big reveal. I hate to say this, and maybe it's because I've not read the previous books, but I did not like Dodie that much as the main character. It honestly starts with her feeling the need to insert herself in Vinnie's (Vincent) path while she and her boyfriend are out. Vinnie didn't recognize her, and he obviously wasn't interested in socializing with her, so I felt that she was out of line. Add in her hesitation at "how" to introduce her boyfriend...and she and I were off on the wrong foot. I get that she's an amateur sleuth, but I felt that she handled certain situations wrong, because...it's not like this is her first "case." She'd know her ex was lying and not pursue it at that moment, but then when the opportunity was less opportune THEN she'd choose to chase him. Also, Jackson was too much of a "surfer dude" at times. I get being "clueless" or at least playing the role, but he honestly took things a bit far. I'd go so far as to call him completely daft. I honestly felt bad for Dodie's boyfriend, Bill most of the time. Having to put up with so much ridiculousness, but the author had him being extremely understanding to the point where it was hard to believe at times. I kept wondering...if the shoe was on the other foot (roles reverse) would Dodie be as understanding? Some of the characters I felt were true to life, but I felt that others fell short or just were too over the top. Now, I'm not saying that this book doesn't have its good moments, but I just felt disappointed that I didn't like the main character because of the particular choices she makes and/or refuses to make throughout the story. She just honestly ended up, for me, being an annoying character half the time. If asked if this book could be read as a stand-alone, I think that the answer could be yes. I don't think that there is anything tying this book directly to the previous ones, so I think that it's safe to say you can read this book by itself. Just remember that the relationships between the characters have already been established and that you're only going to get the basic connections between them. For that I am going to rate this book a soft 4 out of 5 stars. I think that I'll go back and read the first book and see if I change my opinion concerning certain characters. For those who enjoy a good mystery novel a few mild thrills then this book would make a good choice. You get the sand, beach, lots of sunshine, plenty of drinks, and murder. ...more
Cliff Hanger by Mary Feliz is a thrilling page-turner mystery novel in the Maggie McDonald Mystery series. I’ve read one of Mary Feliz’s previous bookCliff Hanger by Mary Feliz is a thrilling page-turner mystery novel in the Maggie McDonald Mystery series. I’ve read one of Mary Feliz’s previous books in this series and thoroughly enjoyed it so when this book came along I was eager to see what problems Maggie McDonald was going to have to face and tackle. I can easily say that overall this book does not disappoint. Maggie McDonald, along with her two sons – David and Brian, and their golden retriever Belle are taking a working “vacation.” But let me tell you this vacation quickly becomes more work than vacation. Maggie quickly learns that the young woman she is working for is a bit out of her depth with organizing her property management office and condominium complex. While this place may have a great location, it has a lot of work that needs to be done to get it running shipshape. But this book is full of twists from – a couple with small children being picked up by ICE and deported, to a young man’s untimely death, to mysterious lights on the beach that point to the illegal activity going on. As you can imagine this is all more than Maggie had anticipated taking on. With the young woman, Renee, having to take on the responsibility of three young children for her neighbors who were picked up, Maggie questions whether the timing is right for everything that needs doing. Due to the circumstances that surround Jake’s untimely accident and death, this book focuses more on all the puzzle pieces that need to come together to solve this mystery. I personally was shocked when Jake’s parents and even the sheriff were shady in their dealings with Maggie and her boys. I was so worried that their shenanigans would taint how the people in this tight-knit community would deal with Maggie and the boys. Thankfully, people remain kind and cordial. There is quite a bit going on and several characters are introduced throughout. At times, it did get a bit confusing trying to keep everyone straight. The author does a great job keeping me engaged in the story throughout though. If I had to say something that I didn’t like about this book it would honestly be the way that the boys talked to their mother at times. I know, I know. They’re teenagers, but I guess I just reflect back on how I never talked to my mother the way that they do at times. I felt like they were being disrespectful in certain moments and the fact that she let it slide or excused it didn’t sit well with me. Regardless of them being “tired”, “frustrated”, or whatever I felt that they were out of line. I will warn fellow readers of this…the ending isn’t truly satisfying…so prepare yourselves for that. The justice system is far from cut and dry, and we rarely get the answers that we are looking for and this book gives us a perfect example of this. So the ending of this book left me feeling a bit dissatisfied with how things end. All in all, I am rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. This is a good cozy mystery with quite a few thrilling moments. It had me eagerly page-turning trying to figure out who had the motive, means, and opportunity. There are some happy moments, but I have to say I appreciate how true to life the author makes this book because not everything has a happy ending, not everything works out in the end…even for fiction. If you have enjoyed previous books in the Maggie McDonald series then I highly recommend this book. If you’re new and looking for something interesting this book is a good choice because while it is part of a series each book can be read as a stand-alone. So grab this book and enjoy the story! ...more

This story may be short, but it is packed full of everything one could want in a cozy mystery novel. You get drama, mystery, murder, and an overall satisfying ending. It’s not every day that one stumbles across a murder, but sadly that’s what happens and the list of suspects includes a few of the locals and couple in particular who are in “high” places of the community. This is the first book that I have read by Sandra Bretting and I thoroughly enjoyed the book overall. Everything happens in a matter of a few days from murder to resolution. I was a bit shocked to be honest. Haha! I actually expected the investigation to go on for a few weeks at least, but the author has the murderer figured out within a week! The characters are engaging though I have to admit that I find Missy a bit silly at times which caused me to be a bit put off about her character in those moments. There were times of where it seemed that she just didn’t think things through in certain situations when the appropriate course of action was so obvious. My only other issue with this book would be the epilogue. I wanted the author to tell me how much time had passed. The wheels of justice rarely turn quickly, so I wanted to know how much time had passed since the suspect(s) were apprehended and brought to justice. I also wanted to know what had happened with the other woman who was coming to town. That plot point seemed to have fallen through the cracks at the end. Overall, this is a delightful story and I enjoyed reading it. While this book is essentially part of a series it can be read alone, but I applaud the author for her tactful ways of piquing my interest with incidents that I’m sure occurred in other books. I’ll be checking those out when I have the time. For those who enjoy a good cozy mystery with a satisfying ending overall, this is a good book to pick up. If you have read Ms. Bretting’s previous works and enjoyed then I’m sure that you will enjoy reading this book as well. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. Job well done on a delightful cozy mystery. ...more

The author gives readers a young woman whoDesolate Shores are the first book that I have read by Daryl Wood Gerber, but it is a truly engaging novel. The author gives readers a young woman who has moved to Lake Tahoe, changed her job to take a step away from her past, and is looking to make a new path in life for herself. The one thing that she doesn't expect is to discover the body of her best friend early in the morning on the shore. Now, the question is...who killed her and why? Desolate Shores is an intriguing novel that digs deep into the murder victim's past and present. What happened to her? Who were the others that she associated with? Who killed her? Who would want to kill her. Aspen is heartbroken at the death of her friend, but she doesn't have long before more problems come her way. The author throws in her distant older sister and raises some more questions for me. Aspen seems like a well-put-together individual but she comes off a bit scattered at times. It's apparent that something is going on with her niece, but she keeps putting it off about addressing the situation with the girl. I appreciate that she is so focused and determined to help solve the murder of her best friend, but there are other things that need her attention. There is some tension off the bat with Aspen and the Detective Sergeant whom she finds attractive, but after the loss of her parents she doesn't have the highest faith in the police force and it shows. But I will admit that I find it strange that she confides so much in Karen (another police officer) but gives the other cop - Shaper, the most attitude. It makes me curious...was it a male cop who let the case with her parents fall through? This book is engaging throughout, but I can't say that it's perfect. There are some inconsistencies here and there in the story, but nothing that is totally distracting or that most readers will really pay attention to. I didn't particularly like how the author begins this story, because it took a minute before I knew who the main character was and whether they were male or female. I also didn't like how Aspen kept shelving the issues with her niece. I wanted her to address them! She kept thinking/saying "I'll address it in the morning/later." But it seems that later never comes. She's a smart woman, but I just felt like she wanted to avoid certain subjects if she could. I am rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. I love the mystery element of this book. The author throws in quite a bit to keep the reader guessing as to who the murderer is. I like this in a book because I love trying to figure out who the killer is before the end. I did manage to figure it out but it took me a bit. LOL! For those who enjoy a good mystery novel, this one is a good choice to make....more

I have to say that for me this book is a vast improveThe Spider House by Linda Anthony Hill is the second book in her Madam Celeste Mysteries series. I have to say that for me this book is a vast improvement over the first book that I read by this author. Her first book felt a bit dry for me, and I struggled a bit to get through it, but this book is leaps and bounds better in comparison. From the beginning, the author engaged me into the storyline and had me page-turning through the mystery, the drama, and the suspense. The author gave me a young woman looking through her old home for some things and feels something is there. There is...huge spiders that her brother let loose in the house that gradually took over after his tragic death and the mother vacating the house due to the memories attached to it. But the author shows that there is also a spiritual presence in the house, and it doesn't like people snooping around. While this story says it is a "Madame Celeste" novel, I don't feel that she plays a huge role in this book. The author instead chooses to focus on Emma her new apprentice. Emma takes center stage in the majority of this novel as she works on her abilities as a psychic and helping a group of friends discover what exactly is going on at this young lady's (Cheryl) house. Emma is an interesting character and it's nice getting to know more about her and her abilities. The mystery and suspense really drives this novel and I enjoy it very much. Now, there is a murder in this novel, but it takes time getting to it and I felt that the murder was more of a branch off/side storyline than the main focus of the novel. While I enjoyed this book I do have to admit that there were a couple things I didn't like. I was a bit disappointed that the story focuses so much on Emma. I was expecting more of Madam Celeste than I got since it is a "Madam Celeste" mystery and not an "apprentice Emma" mystery novel. The author drops hints here and there that Madam Celeste has quite a bit going on, but we only get glimpses of her work with clients and teases when it comes to her relationship(s). There are some editorial errors scattered throughout the book as well, but they aren't so egregious that they are a total distraction from the storyline. I have to admit that despite my complaints I am quite pleased with this book. I am rating it 4.5 out of 5 stars. The storyline will pull you into the book and have you page-turning as the characters work to learn about the spirits that lurk about the house, the mysterious goings-on outside around the property, and you get a touch of romance as well. For those who enjoy paranormal mysteries, this is a good book to pick up. If you love a good mystery with an unexpected twist or three then I highly recommend that you pick this book up. I look forward to reading this author again in the future. ...more
Murder in Palm Beach: The Homicide That Never Died by Bob Brink is a fascinating mystery novel that takes the reader on a journey through the lives ofMurder in Palm Beach: The Homicide That Never Died by Bob Brink is a fascinating mystery novel that takes the reader on a journey through the lives of the characters and the corrupt legal system. This book is closely based on a real-life murder that happened in 1976. Prominent citizen Rodger Kriger is gunned down in his home and dies of his injuries and infection several days later. A street thug with a reputation for trouncing guys and then flipping them to come to take karate lessons are framed for the hit and sentenced to heavy time in Raiford. The struggle begins to prove his innocence of this particular crime, but the world and the system will not be in his favor. Murder in Palm Beach by Bob Brink is the first book that I have read by this author, but when I read the description for this book I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. The fact that this book is based on a true crime only added to my interest in reading. This book doesn’t start off with a direct lead up to the shooting but instead introduces you to a variety of characters. At first, I didn’t see the point in certain characters, scenes and situations being presented, but gradually I saw the web that the author was weaving with this book. The author was doing a gradual build-up of the storyline and also showing the importance of the character who was about to be shot and killed. I didn’t like Hecher in the beginning, but I have to say that I appreciate his development and reform for the sake of the woman he grew to love. Now, the pace of this story isn’t fast, but I will say that it is gripping. You get pieces of information and riveting scenes at just the right moments to keep you page-turning. The mysterious characters at the gun store kept me page-turning as I was eager to learn who they were, what role did they play, and why. The shock of the “zealous” prosecutor gripped me even more. I was honestly appalled at his behavior and eagerness to do whatever it takes to get Hecher off the streets for good. There honestly isn’t anything that I don’t like about this book. I can tell that it has been professionally edited as I found few to no errors throughout. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. The author gave me a fascinating mystery with political twists and pitfalls. The characters are engaging and the struggle that Hecher goes through to prove that he is innocent of this crime makes it hard to put down. You get politics, romance, conspiracy, and a thrilling who-done-it. ...more

She helps out with Food For Families, has a great relationship with her detective boyfriend and enjoys hanging out with her friends and their book club. When a couple of decorating contests come around she encourages those in her pillow class to enter, but especially Jennifer. So, of course, she's thrilled with Jennifer wins both. Too bad Jennifer's husband isn't as supportive. But that's not the only thing that he's not supportive of. His son has made a less than palatable choice in a future wife and his father makes himself very clear on that when they show up late to the FFF gala. When Matt, Jennifer's husband, is recovering from double knee replacement surgery someone takes advantage and ends his life. Now the question aries...who did it and why? Laurel is quick to learn that more than a couple of people held a grudge against him, but who is the real culprit in the matter? Another mystery is quick to be laid on the table at the reading of Matt's final will, and the surprises just keep coming. This is the first book that I have read by Paula Darnell and I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the mysteries that she weaves in this book. The relationships between the characters is engaging and I appreciated how true to life they were throughout. The author literally had me frowning at certain interactions between them and eyeing more than a couple suspiciously. I love figuring out who the culprit is before the end of the story and with a few clues I was able to do exactly that. I liked the red herrings the author throws in there because she does a fantastic job pointing out that more than one person had a motive and opportunity. There isn't much that I don't like about this book. Jennifer shocked me more than a couple of times when it came to her behavior towards Laurel. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't get to see Laurel more in the role of being the DIY teacher. I wanted to read more of that, but I still found the story enjoyable. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. There are some twists, surprises, and a well-done "aha!" moment. The story is engaging, fun, and I love the pet interactions as well. Bear brings just the right amount of humor to the story with his antics. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future and will probably go back and read her first book as well. The author introduces us to Teddy during his younger years and we watch him grow up. He had ambitions, but gradually life drains all of those away from him. But not just him, those around him as well. He loses friends to life, war, drugs and change itself. He has a chance encounter with a woman from his past, a child is created, and people are taken advantage of. But Teddy finds himself in trouble when Teri's ex boyfriend ends up dead. Who did it? Who is the killer and who will be impacted in this twisted spider's web of relationships? I will say this...this book is NOT for everyone. While there are no graphic scenes and situations, there are scenes and situations that some readers may feel uncomfortable reading and therefore wish to avoid completely. The author has many, what some would consider "inappropriate" scenes with an underage girl with Teddy and then her 17 year old boyfriend. So while there may be some readers who enjoy mysteries but not these scenes, they should be made aware of this fact before continuing forward. Teddy and Teri by Dennis Littrell is an engaging mystery novel that touches on the fine line of certain taboo subjects. Teddy isn't what I would classify as a "reliable" individual. He enjoys being free and doing as he pleases, but life has its way of being demanding and eventually he submits to it. Teddy, for me, comes off more as a user. He enjoys what he has with an older woman, Pamela, but then when he encounters Beverly again he wants entertain himself with her as well. She's the very woman he has a one night stand with and she has his child. But the story really picks up when they cross paths years later. You easily see trouble brewing when Teddy inserts himself into Beverly and Teri's lives. I have to say it appears the author likes the color gray. It's almost like he's trying to see where our minds are going to take us with this story. There are quite a few inappropriate scenes with Teddy and Teri. The girl is nearly 13 years old, lying in bed with Teddy, saying certain things, getting undressed in front of him and more. It gives the illusion something more is going on but the author leaves it very gray so you don't know for sure. There isn't much I don't like about this book. While the gray scenes bothered me, it appears the author is hinting nothing really happened. Or did it? I'm more disappointed in the mother. I don't feel she is one the older Teri gets. She doesn't come off as involved in her daughter's life. I also don't like the heavy usage of the term "dear." It feels affected and pretentious, like cloying perfume. Also, Teddy is too secretive. He acts guilty and I wanted someone to step up. At the end of the day, I'm rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. The storyline is engaging, the characters are flawed, but it works mostly. I do feel certain boundaries are pushed by the author though. I had high hopes for Teddy to get a good role model, but it wasn't meant to be. If you enjoy mysteries get this book, but just be prepared for what lies in store....more

When I first saw this book, I had no idea that it was book six in a series, but I can say that for the most part this book can be read as a stand-alone. While most of the relationships between the characters have already been established this story is easy to get into and follow along with what is going on. A friend of Savannah and her fiance Edward is killed in a hit and run accident outside her shop. The horrific and tragic incident is witnessed by her autistic assistant Jacob and his service dog Suzy. The author creates an immense air of mystery as Jacob reacts to what he has witnessed by going mute. There are no other witnesses and so the investigation must proceed delicately. Add in that the police force is in the middle of a move that is proving troublesome and you have a general idea that this is not going to get solved quickly. The characters are interesting to an extent, but I found some to be a bit flat. The mystery drives this story as the author takes us deeper as to show us that all is not what it seems. There is more going on than meets the eye and this I appreciate. Nicole was more than just a bartender/manager. The author shows us also that Nicole had a secretive side that even those closest to her didn't know about or to what extent. But could something that Nicole herself investigating...could that have been what got her killed? I applaud the author for keeping me guessing as to who was the killer. I began to suspect one person only for it to turn out to be someone else in the end. These are the type of mysteries I truly enjoy. I am going to rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. I'm taking off half a star because there are a couple of scenes that don't really make sense to me but only because of the abruptness of them. I don't quite follow. Also, for me, some of the characters were a bit flat. I understand that since they weren't the focus they got less attention, but I wanted things to blend a bit better. If you have read the previous books in this series and enjoyed them then I encourage you to pick this book up and finish out the series. I'm sure that you will enjoy. ...more

The author presents the reader with two murders, a year old and the cases have gone cold. The police say that the cases are still active, but with no clues, any witnesses dead, and no one connected wanting to talk. Things aren’t what they as two different people investigate from different angles and with different agendas. Ursula shows up to her friend’s apartment where she is staying and finds the place broken into. She finds herself attacked and on the run as two people are hunting her. Why? Her friend is missing and the last message she sent is cryptic. Another person, Danny, is on the hunt for a story. He too is investigating the case of the two murdered women, but he’s going to find, just like Ursula, that this goes deeper than he could have imagined. Seven Devils is an in-depth mystery novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat as you read to find out what happens next and the truth of what happened to the murdered women. The story alternates chapter by chapter between Danny and Ursula. They each are conducting their own investigations, but Danny’s is on-going from the beginning while Ursula’s stems from the strange disappearance of her friend. The author does an excellent job with this story. You get handed things piece by piece like a giant puzzle and it’s like you’re piecing things together along with the characters if not a step behind at times. The author builds the story layer by layer as the characters delve deeper and deeper and the dangers only creep closer. There isn’t anything that I don’t like about this story. There are moments of where I don’t like the characters or become annoyed with their actions/choices, but I applaud the author for having the characters be so real. The characters are flawed, but it adds to the story and makes it hard to put down. The author raises questions but does not leave the reader without answers to most of them. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. If you enjoy a good mystery crime thriller that leads you on a merry road of exploration, danger, thrills and dark answers, then this is a good book to pick up. This is book two in a series, but it’s not entirely necessary to have read the first book to understand what is going on. The author only touches on a couple of incidents that happened in the first book, so this book all-in-all can be read as a standalone. I enjoyed this mystery and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. ...more

Because let’s be honest…they both have her feeling like she’s stuck in the “friend zone.” The last thing that Blake expects is to witness a murder across the street in an empty loft...a clown stabbing the Phantom of the Opera. She actually saw it, but the downside? Since no one else saw it, no body was discovered when police checked it out…few really believe that it actually happened. But what is Blake to do when said the same clown makes an appearance to frighten her? Then there are unsettling rumors about holding companies buying up real estate in downtown. What is really going on? Cold-Brewed Murder by Neila Young is book two in her Coffee Cup Mysteries series. This is the first book that I have read by this author and overall I really enjoyed it! Blake, her sister, and her family are a fun group of characters. I love the familial connection that they have for each and how they do their best to look out for each other. It’s fun to read about how they each push each other’s buttons. Blake is a determined woman when it comes to figuring out the mystery. I love how the author gives the reader little tidbits to piece together as Blake gets them. I loved the OMG moments that are sprinkled throughout. The mystery of this novel is compelling and thoroughly engaging. The only complaint that I have concerning this book is that I only get snippets of what Blake looks like. I may have missed a more thorough character description of her somewhere, but I don’t remember it. I got descriptions of all the other characters, and I liked that. I will also say I’m in a bit of a fog as to how she makes her choice between her men, but maybe I just need to read the first book to see how it all begins. I am rating this book overall 4.5 out of 5 stars. The pacing for this story overall is good. It does slow-down in places, and I’ll admit that I lost steam in those moments, but it becomes captivating again. This book does end on a bit of a cliffhanger setting things up for more and so I’m looking forward to the next book from this author. If you enjoy a good mystery, with engaging characters, and yummy treats then I recommend this book! ...more

Goldstein is a cozy mystery novel that starts off with a death, and takes the reader on a ride of “who did it” and a series of complications, twists, and turns! There is so much at stake, and some things aren’t even seen immediately due to all of the chaos swirling all around the characters. So buckle up and get ready for a story that will hook you in as you scramble to figure out who is the guilty party…and why. One Taste Too Many by Debra H. Goldstein is the first book that I have read by this author and once I got a taste of this book I couldn’t put it down. The author introduced me to twin sisters Emily and Sarah. Emily is a chef at Southwind, and due to being in the right place at the wrong time is suspected of murder. The victim? Sarah’s ex-husband Bill. While on one level I would have liked more background into Sarah’s and Bill’s former marriage and the details of the divorce, the author quickly kicks things into high gear when Sarah finds herself facing some legal woes herself. Catnapping and theft?! What?! Yep! Somebody seems to have it out for the sisters! Thankfully Sarah’s employer, Harlan, is willing to be a generous soul and help them out pro-bono. Something isn’t right though, and when another body drops more suspicion is thrown onto Emily. Sarah has her suspicions, but without solid proof, what can she do? There is a lot riding on the truth coming out, but can it come out before Sarah loses everything? And I mean EVERYTHING! This is a great story! Now! Am I saying that you’re never going to get annoyed with the characters? Absolutely not! LOL! There are moments where I got annoyed with both sisters. Sarah learns that her sister is keeping lots of secrets, but she’s not the only one. Sarah gets annoying, too but I just get annoyed because she gets impatient or short with people out of frustration. All in all, this is a well-written book and I enjoyed it immensely. The author gives the reader a dynamic cast of characters and keeps the reader guessing as to who the guilty party is almost until the very end. Just when you think it’s one person, the story slides to make you guess again. I love it! If you enjoy cozy mystery novels that throw in a few red herrings and keep you guessing then this is the book for you! I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. While “One Taste Too Many” may have been the case for unfortunate Bill, it won’t be the same for me. I look forward to reading more books by this author in the future. ...more

The author sets the time around Christmas, leading up to Christmas day as a small Welsh town prepares for the Yuletide celebrations. The author paints a picture of peace and tranquility that is shattered in more ways than one. A company is looking to develop the land around the quiet village, and then murder comes in to shock all who live there. The murder victim is well known but not well liked. A nun, Sister Agatha, when she learns of the crime is quick to descend upon the scene. Despite the local constable declaring the death “not a crime” Sister Agatha is determined to prove that it is. The Hour of Death is an interesting mystery novel. For me, initially, I was worried that it would not hold my interest. The beginning pace was slow, and the story was slow to warm up and really get into gear. Gradually though the story begins to pick up steam and the pieces and players start to come together. Danger is afoot for one of the characters and it seems that someone is stalking her. The interactions between the characters are engaging as they work to piece together what really happened to the woman whose life was tragically ended. I appreciate how suspenseful the story is and how the author keeps me trying to figure out who did it. I love being able to piece together who the bad guy(s) is/are but the author kept me guessing with this book. There isn’t much that I don’t like about this book. I felt that the beginning was slow going, but I like that it gets engaging after a while. There are a couple of minor editorial errors in the story, but nothing so egregious that it is totally distracting from the storyline. The author gives the reader a satisfying ending overall. I was hoping for some conclusion or further information concerning the developer building outside the village, but as that is not crucial to the story, the author leaves that out. Overall, I enjoyed this intriguing who-done-it cozy mystery. Sister Agatha is an engaging character who aspires to emulate many famous detectives, though I was rankled at the dig at Jessica Fletcher. I appreciate how she never stopped digging, searching, working to piece together the complicated puzzle that was this mystery. She is absolutely a dynamic character. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. The author weaves a story that is hard to put down and that pulls you as the characters work to solve a crime and uncover long-buried secrets. ...more

She’s a witch living in Destiny Cove and she makes cupcakes infused with a bit of magic. She has a thriving business, and a thriving problem with one of the local shop owners as well. Regina, the problem local shop owner, is more than a small thorn in Zoe’s side. Regina wants Zoe’s book of spells. When Zoe won’t sell it to her, Regina takes things into her own hands, but when Regina ends up dead in Zoe’s shop…well…things look bad for Zoe. The Witching Hour by Sara Bourgeois is the first book in her Wicked Witches of Destiny Cove series. The story is engaging from beginning to end. Zoe is in an interesting character and one I enjoyed reading about. She’s a witch, a baker, a daughter to a mother who is beyond meticulous about cleaning, and an adorable fuzzy familiar. I love how the characters come together and help this story flow along. There is drama from the beginning and while it does ease up, it never completely goes away. I enjoyed reading this book but I honestly felt like I was missing a book. I wanted the author to give me more background on the characters before just diving into the storyline. I wanted to know about what brought Zoe to Destiny Cove or if she was always a resident of the town. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The mystery element is well done and there is a touch of romance as well. The author does leave the reader with some questions regarding certain interactions between particular characters, but I’m hopeful that some will be answered in the next book. If you enjoy stories by this author or just enjoy reading paranormal mysteries then this is a good choice for you. I am rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. ...more

Penn thinks now she can finally settle in, run the Chocolate Box and be safe from her relatives. Sadly, her problems are only just beginning. Trouble with the woman she calls mother, a murder and more are brewing in this third installment of A Southern Chocolate Shop Mystery series. In Cold Chocolate by Dorothy St. James is a cozy mystery novel with twists, surprises, and a suspect list a mile long. Penn has definitely got her work cut out for her as she works through the town trying to figure out who had motive, means and opportunity to take out the local Casanova. As she digs she learns quite a bit about not just him, but those who were around him as well. This is a fun, engaging story with interesting characters. This is the first book that I have read by Dorothy St. James and I truly enjoyed it. While this book is part of a series, I was able to follow along with the storyline with ease. I still intend to go back and read the first two books in this series though. I can tell from the storyline that Penn has come a long way from how she was in the beginning. I appreciate the author for filling in some spots for me here and there with the main characters. This helps to keep me engaged in the story. There isn’t much that I don’t like about this book. The mystery is well done and I enjoyed piecing together who the true culprit is. I like being able to figure out who the guilty party is before the big reveal and the author gives the reader just enough to do so. While Penn and Stella, her dog, had their annoying moments I truly enjoyed this book. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book is truly enjoyable, fun and even leaves you with a bit of a sweet tooth at the end. For chocolate lovers, this book is a must read, and if you just enjoy a good mystery novel then I highly recommend you grab up this book. ...more
