Harris’ lNothing makes my day like a new Sebastian St. Cyr mystery! I am a relatively new convert to this genre, largely because of this series. C.S. Harris’ latest Sebastian St. Cyr story, set in the Regency period, is What the Devil Knows. As expected, Ms. Harris does an excellent job weaving a good mystery with great characters, and interesting historical events in a way that makes the story and setting come to life.
In What the Devil Knows, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin is on the trail of a vicious and brutal murderer. It is unclear to him and the Bow Street runners, how this murder is connected to a string of similar murders three years earlier. Did they arrest the wrong man three years ago or is this the work of a copyist? Devlin, working with Sir Henry Lovejoy, is determined to put the clues together and figure it out.
Once again C.S. Harris delivers a tale that is packed with action, intrigue, mystery, and history. What the Devil Knows is littered with murder and unexpected connections that keep the reader on her toes. Sebastian’s need to stand for the dead is his way of making amends for his actions in the past that he relives in dreams that still haunt his nights.
I could not put the book down. The plot flows at the right pace and more than once, my stomach was in knots. The secondary characters are vividly portrayed and add additional dimension to the story. Some of the recurring ancillary characters are still a mystery and make me wonder where they will take future stories.
I love the dynamic between Sebastian and Hero, his wife. They are one of my favorite fictional couples. They pull you into their world from the first page. Sebastian is a clever mixture of heroic strength, determination, and charisma with a loving heart of gold. Hero is his perfect mate. It was an excellent plan to pair Devlin with Hero. She is tough and determined to change the class system of that time. Like Sebastian, Hero has a big heart for the downtrodden. The way they support one another is touching and melts my heart.
What the Devil Knows has some unexpected twists and turns not only with the mystery but also in Sebastian and Hero’s personal lives. This is a wonderful read. I am anxious to see what comes next. Don’t wait to read this one!
There are authors who’s books you always go to no matter how many they write in a year and Aleatha Romig to me is one of those authors. Aleatha tells There are authors who’s books you always go to no matter how many they write in a year and Aleatha Romig to me is one of those authors. Aleatha tells a story in a way that you live out that story in your head and you will remember that story and those characters for the rest of your life. This book is the conclusion to the Dangerous Web Trilogy, and it was amazing.
There is one thing in this series that everyone should know and that is you Do Not Hurt anyone in the Sparrow World and if you do be prepared for Heaven and Hell to fall upon you.
I have lived through all of these characters and loved every minute of it and I will be sad to see this group go but what a ride we have had, the Sparrow World is full of up and down, in and out, suspense, agony and danger but it is also full of love, support, friendship and togetherness, the kind of togetherness you get with being part of one big family.
Lorna is that type of person who everyone wants to be go to if they need help, she is the backbone of the group, she holds everyone together, she is strong and supportive and very loving, she is the one I would go to if I needed anything.
Lorna and Reed have not had an easy time of things, they have gone through so much and they come out fighting, they are a couple who do not believe in giving up, they believe in fighting for the people and things they love and that makes such an amazing story and such a force to be reckoned with.
Life is never easy but when you have family and friends and loved one is by your side, they make living just that little bit easier to get through.
This series was just perfection, and everyone should read it, they will not be sorry. ...more

There is nothing Reid cannot find out for anyone.
Lorna Murray. Lorna is married to Reid and is the sister of Mason who both work for Sterling Sparrow. She was recently kidnapped by accident and when it came out it was discovered the captors wanted Mason’s wife Lauren. Lorna went through a horrific ordeal due to these captors.
Although Reid and Lorna have been married now for some years, there is still a very protectiveness that Reid has for his wife due to what she has previously endured. ____________________________________________________________Dusk, the first book centred more on Lorna’s abduction and her being held hostage with Sterling’s wife Araneae. This book concentrated on what happened after they were returned to the Sparrow world. I must warn you though that this book does deal with a lot of symptoms Lorna has after the abduction and the abuse she was subjected to as a small girl. There is a lot of detail about the sexual abuse she was subjected to.
Lorna suffers from a lot of flash backs, but the memory loss Lorna had after the abduction is dealt with and poor Reid, he just wants to hunt down the people who hurt his wife and kill them but that is the last thing Lorna wants, she just wants her husband to be with her. Lorna just wants to feel safe again. The flash backs give you a sense of what Lorna went through and although this is fiction it made me understand what people may have felt having gone through abusive behaviour themselves.
This book will make you read about subjects that society does not always want to talk about or bring up and that is one thing I like about these books. They deal with real issues. I applaud Aleatha for dealing with these issues and bringing things like this to light, not many authors would. If you have read Dusk you will love Dark, it just follows on seamlessly and gives your more of a sense of what happened and how things transpired.

She breaks up with her longtime boyfriend, Matthew because of his commitment issues. Cecily wants some idea of Matt’s plans for their future. Matthew wants to continue as they are. His actions make Cecily feel that she is a convenience more than a girlfriend. She decides to breakup but questions her decision constantly over the next month.
One night after their breakup Cecily is fighting insomnia due to overthinking her decision. She goes for a walk then stops in a little neighborhood dive bar to drink away her troubles and disappointment with Matthew. After drinking a little too much her thoughts go to Matthew. As Cecily pulls out her phone the guy on the barstool next to her, tells her if the call is to an ex don’t do it. Grant introduces himself. They spend the night talking and getting to know one another. By the end of the night, they both agree to spend more time together.
The Lies That Bind starts out with as excellent story. The way Grant and Cecily meet and talk is charming. The slow burn exploration of a relationship is believable. Grant’s twin brother is fighting ALS. He is taking Byron to England for a new clinical trial. Grant explains to Cecily that his brother is his priority right now which Cecily understands. At this point, I’m all in for Gant and Cecily. How can I not love this guy even though he does send out some negative vibes? Cecily agrees to visit London while he is there. It is during this trip that the story begins to fall apart for me.
Emily Griffin is an excellent storyteller. Her writing is outstanding. She creates wonderful characters who are relatable. My problem is the number of romance tropes thrown into The Lies That Bind. It has everything but the kitchen sink. The first third of the story is excellent. I love getting to know Cecily. The middle third flows at a slower pace. Grant becomes a questionable character that I trust. The last third of the story feels unbelievable and this from a reader who doesn’t have a problem with a lot of eye-rolls or handwaves during a story. The ending, while the author wins me back a little, I’m still asking myself if this can happen. The overall story decent entertainment with an okay ending, unfortunately I never get back to the love I had for the characters at the beginning. ...more
Aleatha Romig, Queen of Darkness and Thriller has done it again.
Another amazing book to start what can only be another No.1 Series. Oh yes and there Aleatha Romig, Queen of Darkness and Thriller has done it again.
Another amazing book to start what can only be another No.1 Series. Oh yes and there is a cliff-hanger, well it wouldn’t be an Aleatha book if there wasn’t which makes it all the more suspenseful.
I am not going to go into lots of detail as I feel that will spoil the storyline for these two amazing people, all I will say is this last series of books I am sure will not disappoint all Aleatha Romig Fans and I for one cannot wait for the next book.
I have always liked Lorna and Reid. The story behind them during the first series was always something I wondered about and to find out how Lorna came into the Sparrow World and I was so pleased that Aleatha included this story along with the other Sparrow people. This just makes the Sparrow’s complete now.
What I feel helps these stories, are the back stories to the characters, we don’t just get a play by play of what is happening now. Aleatha has written her series of books in a way you get to hear both sides of Loran and Reid’s story, their background, the backstory of who they are and how they got to where they are. I know there is more to tell in the other books but this just sets things up nicely.
This book is full of everything; it has intrigue, mystery, and keeps you on your toes and that is the way it should be.
The story does begin with Lorna and Sterling Sparrow’s wife, Araneae being kidnapped, I mean, seriously, do people not realise they are dealing with the King of Chicago’s underground and who in their right mind would even think of doing that and thinking they will get out alive.
The romance between Lorna and Reid is good, not in your face, all guns going which I have read too much of recently, but was a good quantity so you know these two have a connection and a strong one at that. There is real love there.
This story goes at a good pace and you don’t get confused by what is going on which I find important, especially with this type of story with lots of suspense.
The amazing thing with these books is no matter how many times you read, you are always coming up with different scenario’s and you get yourself all twisted up wondering what will happen next. What I have learned reading Aleatha’s books is never to presume, you may think you know what is going to happen and you are nearly always wrong and that is to me the reason Aleatha Romig is a great writer.
I personally cannot wait for the next book.
Thank you Aleatha Romig for another amazing book. You never cease to amaze me with your writing.

After one of Addison’s posts at a coffee shop, the super-rich, super gorgeous, Braden Black responds to the Instagram post with a negative comment. It is part of Skye’s job to run the social media sites and remove negative comments immediately. When she missed one of Braden’s post which started a yelling match with one of Black’s employees a string of events are in motion that change Skye’s life. Black storms Addison’s office to answer the yelling match in person which leads to an angry Addison and dinner with Skye and Brandon. The dinner date quickly moves to the bedroom and from there, to more.
In Follow Me Darkly, Helen Hardt creates two wonderful characters. Braden Black is the dark, mysteriously sexy, billionaire who wants to explore his kink with Skye Manning. Skye is the beautiful, assistant with dreams of being a professional photographer. She falls hard for Brandon and his sexual adventures. There is no doubt that the chemistry between these two characters is WOW.
Ms. Hardt does an excellent job developing the characters and their relationship. Even though there is insta-lust, they do take time getting to know one another. Well, we get to know Skye, she is an open-book, country girl. I love her strength, determination, and kindness. She is one of those characters that I would love as a friend in real life.
Branden on the other hand, has secrets that aren’t revealed, but there are hints that makes the reader want more. He needs control. He knows that it takes hard work and determination to get where he is from where he started. He is a workaholic in building his career. Also, he knows that Skye is his obsession. The question at this point is will he give Skye want she needs or will he hurt her terribly.
This first installment of the Follow Me trilogy concludes with a lot of unknowns. Follow Me Darkly ends with a lot of questions. Primarily, the reader is wondering what Skye is going to do with some unexpected information she receives. She seems confused, but not put off by the revelation. I’m anxious for what happens next. The books’ release dates are four months apart, so there isn’t a long wait for the next Skye /Brandon fix. Come on January. ...more

Her current assignment is a lifestyles and dating column which often puts her in the middle of the New York City dating scene. She creates online profiles on dating sites, attends speed dating events, and has random hook-ups with men. All her crazy experiences are excellent material for her articles. Unfortunately, they also make her believe that all the good men are taken.
Once a year, Sadie also writes the “Dear Santa” holiday column. It is her favorite assignment because she finds ways to help kids who write her. It is the Dear Santa column that changes her life in ways she couldn’t imagine.
Sebastian Maxwell is a single dad still mourning the loss of his wife. She lost her battle with cancer four years ago. Sebastian can’t let go of his grief or the belief that he failed his wife. To compensate he keeps busy at his successful restaurant working way too many hours. He has the occasional hook up with women to meet his physical needs. He makes sure any woman he meets knows that he not interested in a relationship. He isn’t ready for that step. Not only because he is worried what his wife thinks, but he doesn’t want his daughter to experience another loss if the relationship fails.
Birdie Maxwell is Sebastian’s daughter. She loves her dad and worries that he is not happy anymore. She can’t talk to him about her mother because he is working so much and talking about her makes him very sad. She has a housekeeper/babysitter in her life but she wants a woman as a special friend. Not a mother, she has a mother, but someone like a mother. Birdie decides to write to Santa even though it is June. Birdie is not sure she believes in Santa anymore though. Santa let her down in the past; regardless she is going to give it a try.
What a beautifully crafted story! At first, I thought this was going to be a Sleepless in Seattle story transplanted to New York City, but it isn’t. Sadie and Birdie connect on a personal level that neither expect. Sadie lost her mother at the same age as Birdie. Birdie takes comfort in what Sadie shares with her. Sadie’s honesty and kind soul are what Birdie and Sebastian need at this point in their lives.
Like most books by the writing duo of Keeland and Ward, Happily Letter After is a feel-good, slow-burn story. I love the characters. They each grab my heart and hold it even after the story ends. In addition to the three main characters, Sadie’s dad, her best friend Devin, and the housekeeper Magdalene, all add dimension and in sight to the story
This character driven story, told from Sadie and Sebastian's point of view demands the reader to cheer them forward. Even though the story touches on some sad topics there is very little angst. It is the happiness and love that begins with Sadie and Birdie then reaches my heart that makes the story one of my new favorites.
I highly recommend Happily Letter After it will make you laugh, make you teary, the characters become your friend, and it surprises with an unexpected twist. I love it. I cannot wait for the audio. I’m sure I will play it on repeat like so many others by these authors. ...more

She has a lovely heart and loves helping out people less fortunate but she lacks the confidence to motivate herself. She is the type of person you wanted to hug but also give a good kick up the arse to get herself motivated. Oliver, the son of the all-powerful/rich Eric Russell who is the owner of Russell & Co which is a chain of department stores. Oliver has been tasked into overseeing the new store’s opening. The underlying issue with Oliver and his family is that Oliver’s parents want him to marry and be happy. This is where you see the wheels turning.
To the mutual benefit of both Oliver and Victoria, they agree to have a fake engagement. This way Oliver can keep his family happy and Victoria can do what she has always wanted, her fashion designing, she can also get her students the chance of a fashion show on the day the new store opens. No matter the person reading this book, if you know Aleatha Romig and her sinful books then you will know the type of book you are going to be reading. If you are prone to blushing then get ready for a thrill, this book will have you so hot under the collar someone will be hosing you down by the end.
This book will blow your mind; some say it is a taboo subject, young woman, man older by far than her, but so what, this is a great erotic romance between these two. Let’s face it as well; it wouldn’t be an Aleatha book if there was not some steam in the book now would it.
This is the 4th book in the Indulgence Series and to be honest I think this is the best of the 4. I loved them all but this one just stood out to me more than the other three
Sophie is adorable, young, but adorable. College girl and young at 18, has a major crush on her best friends dad. She even compares all other men to this man but no one is ever good enough in her eyes. Taboo…….. well maybe just a tad
Matt is the man in Sophie’s eyes. Yes he is her best friends dad, yes he is twice her age but as Sophie has not seen his daughter in a while this justifies this crush she has on him. Ever believe in wishes come true??
Well someone must be looking out for Sophie as her prince charming does come along and lo and behold it is Matt Hamilton the man of her dreams. The attraction to each other though is undeniable and let’s just put a warning out there…….. There is a lot of Sex but you know that just makes it so much more enjoyable.
Matt lights up when he sees Sophie again, he remembers how she was, how beautiful she is but now she has grown up he is blown away but how much he is drawn to her and all he wants to do is give her everything she has ever wished for.
The chemistry and sexual heat these two have will burn your hands on the pages but it is so worth it. The story is set at a good pace and carries you along nicely, however, if you are looking for a lot of intrigue, mystery, angst from this book, well pick another one of Aleatha’s books. This book is pure delight, fun, sexy hotness, a pure delight and exciting to read and devour.
These books by Aleatha are amazing and I would recommend them all. ...more

This story takes place in Northumberland which for those who do not know is in England, UK. It is a story about how Evie and Roane meet and the circumstances that bring them together. Evie has her barriers up when they first meet and let us say it is not just plane sailing as some romance novels can be. There is plenty of angst when Evie meets Roane, but the good thing is they start out as friends. Evie has been burned before and just does not want to let her guard down. I must point out those that Evie is not from England; she is from Chicago but leaves it all to go on vacation to Northumberland. The people in Northumberland are a community who believe in fun, community and honestly, is there drama, yes, there is in any community like this one. Evie falls in love with this place.
Evie finds that she cannot fight the feelings she has while being here and she cannot get over the attraction she has for Roane. She truly feels these are the most intense feelings she has had in some time. What she does not know is what will happen when she must finish her vacation, does she stay or go home to Chicago or does she take a chance on love and stay with Roane?
This is such a beautiful story with so many interesting characters. This is truly another amazing book by Samantha Young and I was so please to have been given the chance to read this for an honest review.

A year after her sister died, Leena Cotton is still grieving and struggling to move on with her life. She is angry with her mother, her job going down the tubes due to anxiety, and she thinks a big client is leaving the firm, thanks to her freezing during a presentation. Rebecca, Leena’s boss, calls her into the office to require that she take a two month paid leave. How is Leena going to survive? Work is what gets her through her day. Well work and Ethan, her longtime boyfriend.
Leena efforts to deal with days of nothing to do is depressing. Ethan, who works for the same company, gives Leena some tasks on his projects, but it isn’t the same. Leena decides that a trip to Hamleigh-in-Harksdale to visit her grandmother Eileen is what she needs. Eileen (79) is working through the sudden end of her marriage when her husband Wade runs off with another woman.
Once at her grandmother’s Leena realizes that Eileen needs something different too. Eileen shares that she planned to move to London when she was young to have a career, but that changed when she married and became pregnant. Leena comes up with a plan and convinces Eileen to switch homes for eight weeks. Leena will take over the neighborhood watch and planning the local May Day festival while Eileen can see what London offers her.
The Switch is a lovely feel-good story. Told in the alternating points of view of Eileen, and Leena; women from two very different generations. The story addresses many of the ups and downs of real life, including loss, divorce, dating, grief, friendships, and family. Eileen becomes a temporary grandmother to Leena’s roommates as well as befriends some of the elderly in the London area. At the same time, Leena is the young, energetic personality who works with Eileen’s friends. Both women learn a lot about what they appreciate in life, and adjust to their new friends.
Beth O’leary is a new author to me. I enjoy her writing style and her perspective on a twenty-something and a seventy something characters. She tells there story with humor, and flair that makes me connect with the main characters on many levels. Both women have a lot to offer their community, something we all forget occasionally. Leena learns how to face her grief and her mother, while Eileen learns that there is still life and love for a seventy-nine year-old divorcee.
The Switch has some exceptional support characters. Leena’s roommates and neighbors are excellent examples of that generation. The same for Arnold, Eileen’s elderly neighbor and his stepson Jackson. The people in the neighborhood crime watch are a hoot. I enjoyed listening to these two women’s adventures.
The narrators, Alison Steadman and Daisy Edgar-Jones from Hulu’s Normal People do a decent job. There are times when they pulled me out of story, mostly when talking on the phone. That doesn't happen often though. Overall, I enjoyed The Switch on audio. It is a beautiful story that works well in an audio format. I plan to look for more stories from Beth O’Leary in the future.

Samantha Young writes books that you can emerge yourself with and get lost in, they take you to another world, sometimes the world you wish to escape to and sometimes they relate to aspects of your life or what you have gone through and to me that makes reading and reviewing her books all the more worthwhile.
What I loved the most about Jack and Emery’s story was the fact that you knew this was a long time coming, their love, took a while to get there but it was worth all the heartbreak and sacrifice on both parts to get there.
I must say going back to Bailey’s book, I loved Jack, I was rooting for him to get his own story, there was always something about him that intrigued me so I was super excited when Samantha wrote Jack’s story.
Jack and Emery are just lovely, their characters are people that you probably know, they are just so down to earth but so compelling that makes you want to just bundle them both up and hold on tight to them.
Emery, bookstore owner, (now who wouldn’t want that job?) is shy and one of those girls who will blush at the drop of a hat but she is so endearing to you, you just love her.
Jack, well just is one of those guys who you know bits of but you don’t know it all, he keeps you guessing on his life which is just brilliant.
What I loved the most about this book was the way in which Samantha opens these characters up so you get drawn into everything they are feeling, their wishes, their past and present and makes you understand why Jack is who he is and why he does some of the things he does, the way Emery becomes a different person and why her past played such a role in her life.
You just literally fall in love with these people as if they were real people in your everyday life. This book is not a straightforward boy meets girl kind of book, in true Samantha form there are twists and turns and so much to take in but boy it is so worth it. This book will compel you to read on and on and late into the night to get to the end of a chapter.
You will not be disappointed. I can guarantee that ...more

When her mother dies, Cadee is afraid that she will lose even that small apartment. The unexpected offer to attend High Court College is a shock, but nothing is really free.

He cannot share what he knows, but the hazing that she must endure is more bullying. They want her to admit that she doesn’t belong. Cadee makes up her mind that she will not be broken.
Bully King is the first book in a duet. It is a given that a JA Huss book is not going to follow a typical path of a bully trope. Bully King, told from Cadee and Cooper’s point of view, hurts sometimes. The hate that Cooper has for Cadee does not make sense. What turned him against her? Cadee’s willingness to put up with Cooper makes my head swirl.
Dante Legosi another pledge in Cadee’s class has a mysterious background. How does he fit in the mix and why is he out to destroy Cadee. Something is going on here. The friendship among Cooper, Ax, and Lars is hanging by a thread because secrets can destroy.
Julie is one of a handful of authors who never disappoint me. I know that she is going to take me down a path where I question what she is doing. I trust her to make it right. Somehow, she always does. Even though Bully King is a duet, this first book does not end on a cliffhanger. Most of the secrets bubble to the top. I know there must be repercussion for this group because of decisions they all make. Finding out what they are, and how they recover has me sitting on pins and needles waiting for book two. I love Julie’s storytelling. She never disappoints me.

Sophia’s father doesn’t trust Sophia to do a good job of getting the hotel away from the Lockwood’s. He does everything he can to interfere with Sophia’s decisions and wear down her confidence.
Gloria Copeland is the former partner behind the feud by having an affair with both of her partners. Her final act of stirring the pot comes when Gloria wills equal parts of her hotel to her former partners, the Sterlings and the Lockwoods. They each want to take over the interest of the other partner. It is a major feather in the cap of the winner.

Now they start on the wrong foot, with Weston sending Sophia on a wild goose chase. Before long though, Sophia strikes back and the games begin. Sophia and Weston each show their ability to run a hotel and work hard to bring it back to its glory days. As they work together toward a common goal, these two enemies become friends and more.
I like this story. There is a little angst, but not too much. It is exactly what I need at this point in my life. The history of the main characters is fun. Not only do they have to deal with their current rivalry, they need to deal with their past. I enjoyed the banter between the main characters. Their dialogue moves the story along at the perfect pace for me. Sophia is a strong female who knows her strengths. She fights her family and competition to prove herself. Weston has some secrets that he needs to share. He takes a little long to open up, but that seems to be the way it goes with romance novels.
I love the ending. It all works for me. Vi Keeland remains a go to author for me in the romance genre. Her characters are memorable, and make me happy. The Rivals is a good story that I recommend. It has a good combination of relationship building, engaging banter, sexy times, and a memorable ending. ...more

Worm, is a nine-year-old orphaned urchin who witnesses a woman’s abduction. He returns to the clinic to pull Squeaky, a former brothel owner, into his quest to find the woman. Worm and Squeaky begin their quest by learning all they can about Eloise, the woman abducted. There are dangers connected to their quest but the duo push on, even though Squeaky isn’t too crazy about getting involved.
I love Christmas stories, and I love this one. I have not read any other books in Ms. Perry’s series, and can testify that A Christmas Revelation works wonderfully as a standalone. It is my understanding that Worm and Squeaky are secondary characters in the main series. They are lovely main characters in this one. I need to find out more about them.
I enjoyed this heartwarming Christmas tale with Victorian history sprinkled throughout. Worm is a sweet, loving character who brings so much heart and joy to the people around him. His life on the street didn’t break him, but opened his heart to help others. Squeaky is another interesting character with a lot of history and darkness in his past. They add so much to this adventure.
There is enough story in the novella to encourage me to search for more historical books by Anne Perry. Her research and knowledge of the Victorian era adds a lot to the enjoyment of her story. If you love a good historical novel, with entertaining characters, and an old fashion Christmas celebration added for good measure—A Christmas Revelation is a book for you. ...more

After their separation, Brock experience sends him to join the FBI. Maura builds a career in filmmaking. The couple’s careers bring them back to where they lost each other, when another group of women disappears. Brock is the FBI agent investigating crimes very similar to the one that caused his arrest. Maura is filming. Maura and Brock team up to solve the mysterious disappearances and work through their past.
Tangled Threat is a good mystery with a second chance romance to boot. It does not take long for the couple to pick up where they left off. I’m not sure that is realistic, but it works for these characters. The author does an excellent job building the chemistry between these two characters.
The mystery is rather complicated, although I did guess the culprit early on. I’m not sure if it was a good guess on my part or the author wanted the reader to jump there, while she throws in clues that made me rethink my theory.
I enjoyed reading this book. The characters held my attention from the start. As a second chance lover, I couldn’t help but hope that Maura and Brock find a way back together. There aren’t a lot of surprises, but the mystery is solid and made the pages turn quickly.
I love the scenic background that Heather Graham gives the reader. As a new Floridian, I followed up with additional research and plan to take a few day trips around the state.
If you like a good mystery with a bit of second chance romance as the cherry on top, grab Tangled Threat as your next escape. I’m always grateful for the opportunity to find this new-to-me author. I will search for more by her in the future. ...more

All of her life, her art was the most important thing in her life. She was a celebrated and sought after as portrait artist a favorite of the aristocracy. When her father decided it was time to marry, she put her future in her father’s hands. Her only request was that whomever he arranged allowed her to continue with her art. Unfortunately, once married her husband Sir Anthony held her art from her until she illustrated his anatomy books. When her husband died, people believed Lady Darcy was “unnatural” or a witch because of the books she helped illustrate.
The mystery was not that complex as I figured it out early on. I did question my theory when the author threw in a couple little twists. I returned to my original culprit quickly however. The characters are interesting. I delighted in meeting the main characters, Lady Darby, her sister and brother-in-law, and Sebastian Gage. The busybody guests were a hoot, and gave insight into the gossip mongrels of the time.
There was good chemistry between Kiera and Gage. There was an attraction between the two main characters, although they both try to hide it for one reason or another. I loved their collaboration solving the murder. Through most of the book, their cooperation working together felt more realistic than any romance that was trying to develop. Gage pushed back including Kiera often, as the man, but Kiera didn’t allow him to get away with that unless it was something she didn’t want to do.
The Anatomist’s Wife is a good start to the series. There are many positives to make me want to read more about this duo. The characters, good and bad, are enough to keep me reading. I like the relationship between Kiera and her sister Alana. Alana is the typical older sister, bossy but coming to her sister’s defense instantly. Philip the Earl of Cromarty, Alana’s husband is loving while trying to retain his authority as Lord of the Manor.
Except for the Scottish proverb, “Be sure to live your life, because you are a long time dead,” that I love and the mention of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians, the setting could be anywhere with a large estate. The setting is more a mention than a significant part of the story. I hope in future books; we get to travel the Scottish countryside.
I enjoyed this story enough to continue with the series. I want to see how the characters develop. Is there a romance in the future for Lady Darby and Gage or are they going to continue as mere sleuthing partners? The Anatomist’s Wife is a good start to a series and fun to read. ...more
Sebastian’s Aunt Henrietta and the Archbishop pull him into another murder investigation in What Remains Heaven. This time the victim is the 4.5 Stars
Sebastian’s Aunt Henrietta and the Archbishop pull him into another murder investigation in What Remains Heaven. This time the victim is the Bishop of London. His body is found in an old crypt the church is excavating. They uncover a missing person in the crypt too. While on the trail of the murderer, Sebastian uncovers more secrets about his past and the present. Hero is pulled into the investigation too. The Bishop is her friend and confidante. There are secrets that Hero doesn’t want Sebastian to know about her. Sebastian suspects her duplicity, and he continues to dig.
I enjoy this series—a lot! In What Remains Heaven C.S. Harris takes the readers on a complex, multilevel murder mystery that includes past and present scandals though which Sebastian must maneuver. The politics of the era plays a big role in the mystery. Like every book in this series, we travel the roads of London, as they exist at the time.
Once again, Sebastian gets in some dangerous situations that increases the suspense and angst. The character development, especially Hero Jarvis is exceptional. Hero and Sebastian are in some funny scenes that bring a bit of levity to the dark murders. The more we see Sebastian, the more his kind and loving nature is revealed. A true champion for justice Sebastian makes hard decisions even when it isn’t an easy choice.
The only negative for me is the continued back and forth on Kat’s background. I’m not sure why the author decided to take Kat and Sebastian through these trials. It seems unnecessary and tiresome for this reader. My hope is that Harris is now weening us off Kat, but I’m afraid she will return more than I care to see her.
What Remains Heaven is another excellent addition to this series. I am invested in these characters and need to devour more in the series as soon as I can. Great characters! Great writing. Interesting historical information. I’m off for more.
Where Serpents Sleep is the fourth novel in C.S. Harris’ Sebastian St. Cyr series. In this story, Hero Jarvis, the daughter of Sebastian’s enemy, LordWhere Serpents Sleep is the fourth novel in C.S. Harris’ Sebastian St. Cyr series. In this story, Hero Jarvis, the daughter of Sebastian’s enemy, Lord Jarvis one of the most powerful men in England, asks Devlin to help her solve a murder.
A murder occurs while Hero is doing interviews with a group of prostitutes. The killers are ruthless killing everyone in the house except Hero, who barely escaped. Lord Jarvis is determined to search out and kill the men; however, Hero wants justice for the women. Her admiration of Sebastian’s skills has her swallow her pride and request that he teach her how to go about tracking the men down. As Hero and Sebastian follow the clues, they find themselves in dangerous and deadly situations. Their hazardous encounters and close working relationship create a bond of friendship between these two unlucky associates.
Hero is a woman before her time. I love this character. She is determined to be independent in a time when women are expected to marry, birth an heir, manage the household, and exist as property of a husband. Hero is a scholar and writer. She spends her free time in the library or traveling around London doing research. She champions causes to help the poor. She has strong opinions against marriage, and never plans to take that step. Her path is both a source of deep pride and frustration for her father.
Sebastian’s character continues to develop. I love the hero of this series. The more we learn about him, the more I like him. He is suffering deep emotional pain in this book after all the reveals of the previous one. Hero coming to him for help pulls him out of his alcoholic stupor, and gives him a purpose. The more he learns of the slaughter, the more focused he becomes.
These two make an unusual team. Mostly they are combative, but there is an air of admiration underneath their sparring. They learn more about one another as they work together. It is enjoyable to watch their mutual admiration grow. The setting of Regency England is an interesting backdrop for the series. It adds depth and anxiety at times. I don’t know what to say except that this series gets better and better with each new book. Where Serpents Sleep is another must read. I could not put the book down. ...more
Why Mermaids Sing is the third book in the Sebastian St. Cyr series. Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin is the only living son of an aristocratic Why Mermaids Sing is the third book in the Sebastian St. Cyr series. Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin is the only living son of an aristocratic family. His friend, Magistrate Lovejoy asks for Sebastian’s help to solve the gruesome murders of young men of high-ranking families. Lovejoy is leery that he will have the access to the people with the answers.
The setting for this series is early 1800 London during the Regency period. The class system plays a very important role in daily life, which causes the magistrate pause. He knows that his position can be replaced if he ruffles the wrong feathers.
The murder is tightly wound around a group of men who refuse to share what they know or do not know about the reasons behind the brutal slayings. Harris throws out a lot of clues for the reader, but they are not always easy to follow. The twists and turns with the unexpected reveals are amazing. What an excellent storyteller she is.
After each book I become a bigger fan of this series, as well as the writing. C.S. Harris does an excellent job developing these characters. Each book peels away more layers, revealing the strengths, secrets, and weakness of the recurring characters. Each character has their own appeal, both good and bad. They are fascinating to say the least. There are characters that run the gambit from good to evil including some that are questionable at this point. In each book, Harris takes us down the roads and neighborhoods of London so clearly it an experience to slip inside the world of the haves and the have nots of this era.
I am getting very attached to Tom, Sebastian’s groom. It is lovely how Sebastian took this boy off the street to help him make something better of his life. Tom is becoming a surrogate son to Sebastian in many ways. His interactions with Sebastian add another level to the story. The recurring characters hit every good and bad quality we find in the real people in everyday life.
I can't wait to get to the next book. I have a feeling that I will come back to this book/series again in the future. Why Mermaid Sing is another must read. I don’t know how anyone can start this series and not want to continue....more

Pretty Nightmare is not a typical boy meets girl, boy likes girl or girl likes boy, but they need to jump through some hoops to get together. Pretty Nightmare is the Company revisited. Boy buys girl, boy has a team, the team are assassins. Can you trust the girl or boy, or will they turn on one another? Like I said, not typical.
I couldn’t wait for this next book in the Creeping Beautiful series. It was worth it. It meets all my expectations for a new JA Huss book. With Pretty Nightmare we are given a taboo treat (MFMM, MM, FM) set in the world of the Company. The Company is a shadow government that has its tentacles around the world. They train children as assassins who kill without guilt anyone who comes against them. While there are characters you will know if you read The Company series, it isn’t necessary to enjoy this new generation of Company Untouchables.
After reading all of JA Huss’ books multiple times, her clever, slightly twisted mind should not surprise me, but she always does. She is the queen of the unexpected. Her writing style is unique and totally entertaining. Pretty Nightmare is another story that threw me for a loop and kept me guessing from start to finish. I love the stomach clenching and somersaults that are non-stop.
A lot of questions are answered in Pretty Nightmare, but there is more waiting for the next installment in the series. I am crazy for these characters, and the way we get into their heads, with the multiple points of view. Now, I am anxiously waiting for the way their story will wrap up. Pretty Nightmare is everything I have come to love about Julie’s writing, and more. I can’t wait for the audio announcement. A great read! ...more
Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin is called to investigate the murder of a beautiful woman found in the arms of the Prince Regent by Lord Jarvis. JarSebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin is called to investigate the murder of a beautiful woman found in the arms of the Prince Regent by Lord Jarvis. Jarvis’ loyalty is to Prince George, the monarchy, and England. Jarvis is not a fan of Sebastian but recognizes his outstanding investigative skills. If the Prince is accused of murder, it could start riots and anger with the aristocracy, so Jarvis is willing to put his dislike of Sebastian aside. Initially, Sebastian isn’t interested until Jarvis shows him that the murdered woman is wearing Sebastian’s dead mother’s necklace.
Sebastian is determined to find the murderer, but he is more interested in why Lady Anglessey is in possession the necklace. It is the same necklace that Sebastian clearly remembers on his mother the day her ship went down at sea.
Kat Boleyn is now Sebastian’s mistress. Tom the young street urchin who helped Sebastian in the first book, holds the position as Devlin’s tiger. They are both eager to help Sebastian wade through the political intrigue to find the clues to both mysteries.
Like the first book in this series, I could not stop reading. The characters are captivating. The political climate of the time makes me wonder how people lived with so much inequity. The murder is complex and filled with the politics of the era. But, for me, watching Devlin discover family secrets makes this story more emotional than the first.
As I finish When Gods Die, I immediately search the library for book three. I’m hooked on the way Ms. Harris tells these stories. As one question is answered another appears. This is a must read for sure for mystery and/or historical lovers....more

While I read a fair number of historical romances, I am new to historical mysteries, so I am pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy What Angels Fear by C.S. Harris. It is exactly what I need while in lockdown for this Covid virus. There are fifteen books in this series initially published in 2005 with What Angels Fear through 2020 with Who Speaks for the Damned.
Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin recently returned from the war with France. He isn’t well regarded by Lord Jarvis, the cousin and chief advisor to the Regent King Prince George. When a woman is found raped and murdered, Jarvis corrals his spies and henchmen to arrest and prosecute Devlin. Sebastian knows the only way he can save himself is to solve the murder.
It is very interesting to travel down the streets of 200-years-ago London. Ms. Harris is brilliant at creating the scenes of the haves and the have nots. The smells and sounds of the wealthy aristocracy are incredibly different from the poor, crowed, stench of the tenements of the masses.
It did not take long for me to fall in love with these characters, especially Sebastian St. Cyr. Sebastian is a larger than life character. He is very much a mystery himself. He has a loving heart, who recognizes the failures of the class system of his time. I love the young street urchin that hooks up with Sebastian to help him solve the murder. He is a sweet character who stole my heart.
Sebastian is suffering with PTSD as we call it today. His nightmares from the war, what he did and what he saw causes him pain. His decision to go to war in the first place are explained. His love of an actress, Kat Boleyn, who dumped him because his father Earl Hendon didn’t approve. Even Jarvis, a villainous character is interesting and all add depth to the story.
These characters, the setting, and the murder mystery are all nicely developed and intertwined to make for an edge-of-the-seat reading experience. Every turn of the page reveals a new lie, deceit at the highest levels of society, and characters layers and layers of baggage to peal off in this and the coming books of the series. I highly recommend What Angels Fear. Not only is it an excellent mystery, the setting will have you wanting to know more about the era. I couldn’t help but do a little research about Regency England and Prince George. I will read more of the series immediately....more

He is more interested in fun and hanging out in the here and now than planning for an independent future and a career. He knows how to play his parents to get more time to grow up—until now. His parents are ready to pull out their tough love and kick him out on his own. While Acer is thinking about what to do, a friend calls about a temp job. He needs a shipment of computer parts picked up and delivered to his warehouse. This is the perfect job for Acer, good pay for a little investment of time. He can make a little money to get into a place of his own, while he thinks about how to continue his carefree life.
Acer begins to question this job when he gets to the dock. Everything about the pickup feels fishy and cloak and dagger, instead of a legitimate business deal. His call to Paulie, the friend who recommended the job, doesn’t calm his concerns. The farther Acer travels up the highway, his memory of his conversations with Paulie niggle at him. He thinks that Paulie is going to cheat him out of his pay. He pulls over to check the cargo to grab some parts for insurance, and finds he isn’t carrying what he thought. He calls his sister-in-law for help then he contacts the FBI and all hell breaks loose.
This is Isla and Acer’s story. Isla is the lead FBI agent assigned to the case. Quickly the FBI team realizes that Acer needs protection and sets him up in a safe house with Isla and her team. It turns out that Isla is the best friend of Acer’s older brother. Their tale is told from their dual points of view putting the reader in each character’s head as the fun, pain, heartache, and resolution unfolds. Ms. Hargrove keeps the reader invested in the relationship while they battle throw the danger surrounding them.
The first forty percent of the story is getting to know Isla, Acer, and their families. It is a sweet, fun distraction mixed in with the FBI investigation into the illegal activities in which Acer is embroiled. I enjoyed the banter among the brothers and Acer’s parents. It is obvious that this is a tight family. Isla and Acer’s relationship turns steamy while they try to remain professional. Then it feels like Isla makes some rookie moves that does not make sense for “the favorite top FBI agent” on her team. More than once during these middle chapters I did major eye-rolls. I understand it is the author setting up the climax, but it didn’t feel real to me.
Acer takes a dark turn and becomes very intense half-way through. As the suspense heats up, my stomach does a few flips. I like dark. The author takes care to hint at some sick behavior without any detailed description. My heart hurts for this couple, but then there is a subsequent loss that feels unnecessary. I am not sure why the author went down that path. Even when the couple shares their life events later, it feels brushed over to me. It is like, life happens and they both more forward. It makes me question why, again. In the end, Acer wraps up nicely, with a hint at what will happen in the second book in this series. Acer is a good beginning to the A.M. Hargrove’s new Kent Brothers series.

During thFrank, Sarah, Maeve, and Gino are pulled into an investigation in Italian Harlem when Gino is arrested for the murder of a local crime boss. During this time, in the Italian communities, there are a number of kidnappings of women and children. The women are often raped or abused during the time they are held. When one of the female volunteers is kidnapped, Gino’s sister-in-law asks Frank and Gino for help. Gino gets in trouble when he goes out on his own to “talk with” Esposito, which highlights his naiveté and his idea that his fellow Italians will do the right thing.
The historical setting of late 1800s New York City is educational as well as entertaining. I didn’t realize that there was an Italian section of Harlem, where Pleasant Avenue is located. The philanthropy of the time is changing as settlement house. The Harlem Settlement Hall offers classes in English, cooking, resident rooms, and other services to help immigrants gain skills and assistance to move forward.
What I enjoy about this series is the dynamic among the main characters as well as the interactions with lesser characters. Sarah and Maeve are women ahead of their times; both are independent and struggle with the limitations on women's careers. Now, Frank immediately contacts Sarah in a situation that he feels she is most qualified. Before they married, Frank always resisted. The dynamic between Gino and Maeve is evolving. They always snap at one another, but now they are showing a deeper connection. I have a connection of Frank and Sarah’s family, now we are meeting Gino’s family. It is fun to see their dynamics. The teasing among the brothers, and the way they welcome their oldest brother’s wife.
I came to this series late and binged most of the early stories. I’m a little bummed now that I’m up to date and need to wait with everyone for the next installment. I highly recommend this series. For all historical and/or mysteries. It is a lovely police procedural, set in a time when forensics isn’t as sophisticated as it is today. Just the same, a good detective can follow the clues....more

Alonzo senses it too.
Tony leaves Key West on a mission from his brother Alonzo. There is something going on in Fort Collins that makes the Dumas brothers anxious. However, Tony’s personal mission is to track down Belinda. Tony needs to get Belinda out of his system. The only way he knows is to have one last roll in the hay. Belinda isn’t crazy about Tony’s honesty about a resolution, which sets up some serious stalking, and bickering.
Belinda and Tony were childhood sweethearts. Their relationship was a little kinky. Tony can’t understand why Belinda calls to him, and he isn’t happy about it. Back when Belinda lived in Key West, Tony helped to get her in the witness protection program. She witnessed something she should not know about. Their break was difficult for both of them, but after eight years, they moved on. That is until Belinda showed up in Key West again.
I love Bossy Brothers: Tony. When Tara, Belinda and Vann were in Florida, I expected Belinda and Vann to get together. When I started this book, I thought Belinda and Tony were going to be a couple. JA Huss decided to keep me guessing for a few chapters. At first, it pisses me off. I’m talking to Julie via Tony on my Kindle, letting everyone know this isn’t how the story is supposed to go.
Fortunately, It didn’t take long before I found myself mesmerized and into the story. Bossy Brothers are in the mist of one of my favorite Huss worlds and I was in love. The deeper I fell into the story, the more I enjoyed the way the unconventional use of the two points of view. It is two parallel stories unfolding at the same time. I love Soshee and the secrets we find out about her. I love that Belinda is using her outstanding art skills at Sick Boyz Ink. I love, love, love that Veronica Bombshell and her family are here. Finally, The Company is circling around too. I couldn’t put the book down.
Bossy Brothers: Tony ticks off all my boxes. I love the characters. One of my favorite settings. Visits with old friends. Mostly I love that the story keeps me guessing. You must read Tony’s book, so that means you must read Alonzo first. This is a great series from the first Boston Brother. What a lovely ride Julie continues with Tony’s story. ...more

She started this new career five years ago with a blog she developed to help her deal with the sudden ghosting of the love of her life, Wes Baxter. Wes left town without a word. He refused to respond to any messages and blocked her on all social media sites. Why? She didn’t understand the why, so she did the only thing she could think to do. She used her blog to work through her breakup then she worked to help others work through the pain and heartache of their breakups. From that Katie built a successful career helping people “wave goodbye to bad relationships so they can free themselves up to find Mr. or Miss Right instead.”
“Some people say that love is blind, but I’ve always thought it’s more like that third margarita: it makes your head spin, and your knees unsteady, and can lead to spontaneous out bursts of Celine Dion’s greatest his—with the right person. But when it’s Mr. Wrong” Well, you find yourself waking up the next morning with a killer hangover, regretting just how fast your pants came off.”
Lila Monroe writes the perfect books to bring me out of a funk. She makes me laugh and feel good. Katie and Wes are fun characters. It is fun from the start with Katie’s first accidental run in with Wes on the streets of New York City through their time together at the ranch of the famous Hollywood “It” couple through to the end. Katie and Wes are at odds for the most of the book, but there is chemistry and sizzle. Wes wants Selena and Ryder to stay together as he is a lawyer for the studio. Selena hired Katie to help her with a successful breakup.
The Breakup Artist is the fourth book in Lila Monroe’s Cupid series focused on five friends finding love. This story is a second chance romance that hits all the right buttons for me. I opened the book to pass a little time then before I knew it, I was at The End. I enjoyed every minute with Katie and Wes. I recommend The Breakup Artist for a funny break from the dregs of the day. If you haven’t read any of the other books in the series, you are fine, as each one stand on its own. Although I will caution, after reading The Breakup Artist, you will want to learn more about Katie’s friends. Lucky for Lila Monroe fans, the next book the Cupids series is coming soon. There isn’t long to wait for more laughs. ...more

People who know me, know I love Samantha Young and her stories and this series to me was just sensational, every story written has just been a great joy to read.
I always love how not only in this book but in every book Samantha writes, you feel what the characters are feeling, you live their fears, dreams, anxiety, love and laughter and in Black Tangled Heart, Oh my word, you felt everything. I was hooked from the prologue and it just got better and better the more I read. I could not absorb this story quick enough.
I have found that in a lot of Samantha’s books you come across issues that are real to life and current to our world and that to me makes the stories more relatable. The only thing is I get too involved with the characters that I get carried away with them.
I love that no matter what, there will be something in this book that you can relate to as the reader. I found that while reading this book, I could believe that so many other people will love this book because of the relatable factor to certain issues that should be talked about and until now have always been thought of as taboo subjects, Mental Health for one. Samantha Young does not shy away from bringing these topics out in the open for everyone to read and discuss.
I loved Jane and Jamie in this book. The emotions these two went through and in particularly Jane just to me made the book feel so real. The love they had was real to me. Jane was such a strong person who no matter what happened to her she just dealt with it all.
Jane was the kind of women who didn’t let a man define her, yes she loved Jamie and yes that was one of those once in a lifetime kind of love but what struck me was how strong Jane was and knowing that if Jamie didn’t turn out to be the love of her life, well she would get over that and deal with it in the way she knew how. She was not defined by a man.
I am sure everyone will love this from Jane, but I had to highlight it as it was so true.
“For a moment, I didn’t know whether to be angry or heartbroken or understanding or defeated. Then it hit me. I could be all those things. But I’d survive them.”
I will leave you wondering now what happened with Jane and Jamie. Do they get their HEA? Are they still together? The only way to find out is to read this amazing book.
Hazel went on her honeymoon alone after he fiancé called off the wedding at the last minute. Why waste a trip to Colorado. Unfortunately, she3.5 Stars
Hazel went on her honeymoon alone after he fiancé called off the wedding at the last minute. Why waste a trip to Colorado. Unfortunately, she was only there a few days, and felt miserable so she checked out. By the time she got to the airport, her flight cancelled due to the blizzard moving in to the area. Her hotel room was already booked, and there wasn’t a room open anywhere in Vail.
While Hazel was sitting in a hotel lobby, she watched a young man eavesdropping on the desk clerks conversations confirming reservations. A few minutes later, the young man announced to the desk clerk that he was Milo Hooker ready to check in. Knowing he lied, Hazel walked up next to him, and said she is his sister Maddie Hooker also here to check in. Now the adventure begins. As the faux Maddie and Milo spend a couple days together in Vail, they realize they want to continue their adventure and head out on a road trip.
My Favorite Souvenir is the newest book from one of my favorite writing duos, Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward. They pulled me right into the book with the unusual meet. Part one is Milo and Maddie getting to know each other. Throughout this section, they stay in character, as a brother and sister traveling together, always staying in separate rooms. I love their adventure. There are fun and funny times that made me laugh and have those warm and fuzzy feelings. I loved, loved, loved part one.
Part Two Milo and Maddie returned to the real-life of Hazel Appleton and Matteo Duncan. The first few chapters of this section turned me off. With the flip of a page, I didn’t like Maddie/Hazel anymore. I expected that Hazel would have issues to address and anticipated the conflict. It was the way she handled her "new life" that frustrated me. Milo/Matteo knew she had decisions too. He wasn't sure what was going to happen when they parted.
Her change into a wishy-washy, spineless character that floored me. I did not like Brady, Hazel’s ex from part one. I like him even less in this section, especially as we learn more about him and his character. I absolutely hate Hazel’s best friend, Felicity. She doesn’t support Hazel, or help her look at the situation realistically. The only character that I love, at this point is Matteo.
Overall, I enjoyed the story, but I would love more Milo/Maddie time. I put the book down several times from chapter fifteen to twenty-three. These chapters progressed slowly for me, mainly because of my anger brewing. Watching Matteo suffer was heartbreaking. I believe the goal is to show how different Hazel is when Brady is around, but it did not work for me. I was so angry that I couldn’t concentrate on the story.
The story ends on a super high that redeems Hazel and the story for me. I recommend My Favorite Souvenir for Part One is fabulous. Part two has a little hiccup in my opinion, although the character and her actions are believable. Matteo alone is worth your reading time as well as the last few chapters. ...more
