Great cast of diverse and quirky characters. As in all cozy mysteries, there's an amateur sleuth who thinks they can solve murders better than a full-time police detective. What was missing in this story is a stronger interaction between the detective and the would-be sleuth. Pretty much all the detective does is to tell her just to stop sleuthing. Other than that, it was a good book to pick up and read at my leisure....more

This really is a sweet book with easy directions to learn how to tie shoes and other things as well. However, that part only comes after half the book is done. The first half is all the reasons why the child doesn't need to learn to tie their shoe. - they have tons of shoes that are slip-ons! So my suggestion is to start the book at the mid-point where it shows way it's important to learn to tie one's shoes....more

However, this is not a contemporary storyline, unless you consider 1970 as contemporary. Discovered the time frame when I started reading the book. The storyline felt contemporary except for the lack of iPhones.
Not your typical cozy. It's written more like a diary with interesting chapter images like you'd see in middle-grade chapter books. Loved the quirky cast of characters and how Mairi's opinion of them changes as the story progresses.
This is a series, of which I hope will be many, and she ends this book without a bunch of loose threads. The next book in the series starts on the train where Mairi just got on in the first book. So it looks like a smooth transition.
Buy the book and pretend you're eating all the lovely pastries and stellar teas with Mairi, you'll enjoy you did!...more

The book is well written and the characters well crafted. Loved the description of Gwen's car, Seth's parents home, and all the wonderful baking he did in the story. I love experimenting with baking so that part of the story really grabbed my attention.
The only part of the story that turned me off was how Gwen stereotyped Seth by past experiences with "similar" men - of which he really wasn't like in the least. But then that adds tension to the story so for others that might have worked. However, I would like to read more of this author's books....more
