Ms. Dietze is a delightful storyteller, as evidenced so well in these two stories. Each story finds engaging and relatable characters, complemented nicely with fun and interesting plots. Historical fiction fans will most likely enjoy meeting Winnie and Beck in The Right Pitch, where an all female baseball team aims to win an exhibition game for charity. Small amounts of chaos erupt throughout, as Winnie and Beck fight their attraction to each other. The second story, In for a Penny, finds Winnie's former neighbor Penny nearly betrothed to a titled Englishman. More adventures follow, complete with a bit of intrigue and mystery that just so happen to involve a different English gent. All in all, these stories take readers on interesting and heartwarming journeys, that, I'm happy to say, have clever and happy endings. ...more

It’s a well woven story that looks at both sides of the coin, delving into the hearts and minds of the individuals behind their causes. I was swept into Blythe’s and Everard’s worlds in no time, and quickly became a quiet observer of all the drama, intrigue, and heartache they experienced.
The story’s main and supporting characters complemented the setting and plot so very well; it was a delight to get acquainted with them all. Frantz’s storytelling ability is divine. Her tales are laden with depth and detail, perfectly illustrating the personal journey her characters experience. She immerses you into an historical adventure full to the brim with mystery, sorrow, redemption, love, and restoration. This story, without a doubt, is one to be savored. I expect I will read this book again. ...more

I’m often I loved the first book (Laurel's Dream) in this series, and I was delighted to find I enjoyed The Heart of the Mountains immensely as well. I’m often skeptical about a second, third, etc. book in a series, as sometimes they don’t deliver as well as the first. Pepper Basham not only delivers another great story here; she maintained my interest completely throughout the book. Just about the time you think things are settling down, another plot twist greets you on the next page. It was great!
The main characters were authentic and relatable, and complemented each other nicely. Minor characters played their roles well, too, deepening the setting and plot, helping move things along in an interesting manner. I enjoyed the tie in with the first book, but it didn’t overpower this one. The Heart of the Mountains has its own wonderful personality and can easily stand alone, meaning you don’t have to read the first to know what’s happening.
If you’re looking for a good historical story, this has it all, from great historical details, a beautifully rich setting, and genuine characters, to romance, redemption, and plenty of conflict with a bit of suspense and mystery thrown in, too. It’s an absolutely delightful read, and I do hope Ms. Basham continues this series. ...more
