I could say so many things about this epic graphic novel series, all of them good.
The revision of the classic Fairy Tales and characters that Bill Willingham makes is so imaginative and fresh I can’t wait my daughters are of age for them to read it. It is violent, sexy, twisted and very human.
I find this series very creative and appealing, I truly recommend it to everyone who loves fantasy, fairy tales, graphic novel and a story well told.
You have 15 volumes in the deluxe edition for your sweet and deep amusement.

So much knowledge, wisdom, sweetness, and devotion are drawn from this book. In these pages I have found one of the clearest and most reasonable explanations of each of the Eight Limbs of Yoga (Pantanjali's), I especially enjoyed the way he explains Ahimsa, answering to so many questions I have asked teachers along the line, none provided a better response. This is just a beautiful read, it has brought tears to my eyes on two occasions. After this book, I am truly devoted to Krishnamacharya.

This is a spiritual book, religious if you will, something you need to know beforehand. It is like reading the Old Testament if you are not willing to accept it will speak of God and His word, then don't read it.
In this book, you can find embedded rivers of Hindu Philosophy, it is a refreshing way of going through your accumulated knowledge (if you have done some reading on the subject), so you could also read it under the perspective of a "compared religion" essay.
To me, the first 100 pages were kind of uphill until I gave in, and the journey it has taken me through has been a fructiferous and pleasant one. I have learned, I have rooted, I have grown, I have gained certainty. ...more

The open end is somewhat disappointing, even a bit lazy writing?
The tone and the pace are very monotonous, which induces you to the estate of mind of the characters. You are drowned by it, suffocated. This is my first Margaret Atwood book and I wonder if this is her style all together or just the voice held in this book.
I am appalled by the thought that women can be thought to comply easily with what is depicted in this story, only the mere display of this is very sexist. Women are not sheep nor sheepish and I am sure that if anything like this was to be imposed over us we would fight to the death to prevent it.
I am lucky that the author presented the sequel in 2019, I can only imagine what it must have been like to read The Handmaiden's Tale in 1985 and be left out with that open ending...
I have read this book during the Covid-19 quarantine and it has been a hard book to swallow. I almost put it down on the first fifty pages, but little by little it has been growing in me until I wanted to know more. I am going to rest now and will read The Testaments (the sequel) after a book or two...

It can get too scientific on the brain functions and the neural connections between this and that. Magnificent closure with three exercises on breathing, meditation, and relaxation. It is not a book of fiction, even though there were sometimes when I would have liked it better if it was.
It does remind you of In cold blood for the "newspapery" style, the topic is refreshing, meaning that it is about time that we hear from sex through the eyes and the ink of women.
I very much enjoyed the creative literary metaphors the author used, but I have to say that midway of the novel I started to feel bored of the stories it was telling and did not see very much the point of where they were taking us.
For me, the story that hooked me the best was the prologue and felt everything a little downhill from there....more

It is unusual that someone so young has enough to fill in a memoir, in this case, the young (ex?) Mormon, talks about her childhood being raised by a couple of extremists Mormons, mistrusting of the government and the establishment in every way possible. Believe me, it will make you wince more than once. How can people be allowed to raise their children without medical supervision or school attendance in a developed country like the USA?? It follows a fast pace, it is well told, not overdramatic, not over victimizing, even though it felt to me that she was over diminishing her self at times. I really recommend it, especially to put you back on your feet, I mean, if someone with her background can make it to a Ph.D. in Cambridge, no one has an excuse not to....more

I am not sure if it is intentional or not, for example: -He avoids mentioning the Spanish Empire when enumerating the most important Empires in the History of the world, and the next chapter he spends on ratling about the Spaniards in the conquest of the Americas, a little contradicting... - He is evasive in speaking of the Jewish religion and belief system, but in continuation he is mentioning Christian, Muslim, Buddhist even long lost religions like the Manicheans, he even includes Feminism, Liberalism, Communism or Capitalism, in the long list of religions, but very little reference to one of eldest religions in the world?! With a community of around 20 million people with full or partial Jewish ancestry?! I find it remarkable. Being a Jewish author I hoped he had explained a little more about his community, I was very eager to learn about it. - He is also denying the expansion and colonization of the Jewish people over Palestine territories by not mentioning it, he even says that from 1945 there has been little expansion from one people over the other and that we enjoy a remarkable time of peace. Well, I say they should ask someone who used to live in the occupied territories by the Jewish Colonies, yes the ones who fail to accept the UN 181 resolution. Just a note on this....more

...more

The reparations asked from the German people after the Versaille Treaty puts the country in a state of maximum economic weakness leaving its people to hunger and frustration, the rise of the Nationalist extreme right party only a logic consequence well justified by the circumstances described by the book.
