Even though it might seem a bit tough, you need to get used, the language before you can really get into the story and themes. (Of which there re plenty) The main character is Mene a young man in a village in Nigeria in the 1960's. During this time period, Nigeria is wrought with a civil war. Mene’s village is dragged in and Mene becomes a soldier or a ‘soza’ as he says it. At first he is overjoyed to be part of the army especially about the uniform he gets. He considers himself a bigger man. But eventually as the story progresses, the real horrors of war are revealed to him. As a young ignorant man, Mene had no idea what the violence and bloodshed of the civil war. As he fight’s for what he at first thought was a good cause he sees how complicated the war is. He begins to see the damage caused to innocent civilians. As he travels he sees the less fortunate, disease and famine-ridden villages. The story isn’t a happy, sappy ending type story. The book is written through the eyes of an ignorant man just opening his eyes to the real horrors of his world. The story is tragic and we also get to see the development of someone living in what we normally see as completely different world inside documentaries and awareness commercials. It’s an authentic look at a period of time and event that not too many people aware about. Massive amounts of time and effort must have been put in to writing the entire book in the broken English. This book is worth the time to read and decipher the language....more

Many of hiTom Clancy is one of the best conspiracy and political writers in my opinion. His books are famous for being well-researched and realistic. Many of his creations have also been turned into best-selling games.
I do not think this was one of his better books as it read like a mediocre conspiracy novel. It didn’t have the same researched and authentic feel as the other books but was just as dense. This is the last Jack Ryan book even though this book is about Jack Jr. And maybe it was just me but it seemed like the exact same person. Normally, Tom Clancy has very strong, developed plot with the perfect amount of action at the perfect parts. This time though, the book is filled with action with just enough dialogue to justify it as a coherent storyline. The book itself is still good but is disappointing compared to the author’s older work.
The book is based around ‘The Campus‘, and organization created by Jack Ryan Jr. It is separate from the government and funds itself by playing the stock market. The organization is then not restrained by American law and is also armed with several pre-written presidential pardons from Jack Ryan Sr. An Islamic fundamentalist group attacks from the U.S./Mexico border. This book is about the struggle against them.
This book is still good for any conspiracy or action reader, but don’t expect the same material all the way through from Clancy. I’d say the book would be good if you felt like some action and wanted a lighter read. ...more

Even though I haven't used the campaign portion of the book yet, everything else has been helpful. The greatest strength of the book is that it has no spoilers. It would've been 5 star if not for the two small typos and a few problems with the weapon placements on some maps....more
