I loved the characters and laughed out loud many times. I would love to read the back story and the future story, if they ever come to fruition. I related to a lot of this and was shocked by some of it. I'd classify it as a comedic female driven romp. So many different tiny adventures and so fun. Janey Sweet is a powerful woman (sometimes a rarity) but vulnerable like the rest of us and I just adored her. Read it - it's lovely and fun.
I mean is it a about a divorcee that is ousted from her CEO position because she is ordered by the company's founder/designer (and her supposed best -friend) because she is too fat or is it about a woman who has done pretty well for herself but lived an examined life or is it about dumpster dining or drug use on rooftops or the ridiculous lengths people go to in order to lose weight. Spoiler alert - it is about all of these things and more.

There were some twists and I enjoyed the characters, their growth, and the ways in which they changed. I'd read more stories about Sylvie & Dan for sure....more

I read this book and while parts of it were interesting, it came off as self-involved and somewhat sexist which was odd considering the topic. This book feels really timely. In the My reviews can also be read at www.wanderponder.com

This book feels really timely. In the era of black lives matter and MeToo, it's interesting to have a story like this that touches on race and rape, as well as class, among other issues. What I really was intrigued by when reading this book was the way it makes you examine bias. As the reader we come to different parts of the story without all the facts and yet we make judgments, which is natural, but this novel does a good job of exposing our bias. I am not saying anything is what it seems in this novel and I don't want to give anything away.
I suggest reading this book if you want to spend a bit of time struggling with issues of class, sexual assault, and race/ethnicity. It's not that these issues are the only focus of the book as the story is much more about our protagonist, Nina and the younger female Lyla (Tom's daughter) and their journey to finding themselves.
It's also a book about the elite and what money can do and what it does do - i.e. the opportunities it brings and the spoliation it causes.
It is a thought provoking read. It doesn't shy away from topics like suicide and what it is like to be a teenager today. At the same time, it's filled with love, fun, sadness, and joy.
I found that I came away feeling like the book offered a very bright outlook on a feminist future but honestly portrayed a few of the many set backs that women face today. I do find it hard to discuss this book without including any spoilers. I recommend it....more

Truly odd story about love, sex, and relationships. The characters are bizarre, that said, they are completely believable.
Not your average love story,Truly odd story about love, sex, and relationships. The characters are bizarre, that said, they are completely believable.
Not your average love story, the tale is truly warped, yet somehow the characters take each other on a sometimes violent journey to a better place. A place where things seem, and hopefully are, better.
This story would be hard to like if the characters weren't so complex and full of life. There are a few twists and a lot of growing pains.
Some oddities include: a roommate assaulting another roommate in a power struggle/sexual encounter, a therapist exposing her interesting inner workings (and who has clients pee in Chinese Food containers if they need to go to the bathroom during a session), an usual skin disease that may be caused by mental issues, and a woman who thinks she finds her childhood "friend" again and again in many babies.
At the heart of the story is our heroine seeking love (or something like that) in all the wrong ways and finding a path to herself and her needs via a depressed (and often depressing) young women who wears various hats including: roommate, abuser, lover, and friend.
If you want to read a story that makes you examine relationships and roles in a manner that you've never read before - grab this book....more
