There is high fantasy, erotic elements, building romance and epic story lines. The relationship between Lillian and Lucius is well earned throughout the story and it's interesting to watch them (especially Lillian) evolve.
I would echo other reviewers who commented that this is not an easy read. It is enjoyable to be sure, but this is one I'd recommend for a reader who wants to settle in with something substantial. The author provides a glossary and I used it heavily.

As other reviewers have mentioned I received Hock Tjoa’s “Heaven is High and the Emperor Far Away” in exchange for an honest review. I am glad I did. As other reviewers have mentioned reading a play is a very different experience than reading a book so go into with that in mind. I used to read plays but haven’t in years so was grateful for the challenge.
The place is set in China around World War Two so context is a challenge as well with this work. The author does a very good job addressing that I the beginning, setting the scene before the scenes begin!
Hock Tjoa’s characters represent, I think, the dire conditions of the time and we are introduced to everyone from a woman sold to a eunuch as a child to secret police. The time is tumultuous and the characters are impacted dramatically by the world around them. One scene in particular does a good job showing how quickly those in power could call you a traitor and take your home.
The first part is a bit hard to follow with multiple characters making appearances but it find’s its rhythm. I also liked the accessible and modern conversational style employed here. After a bit of reading I found myself envisioning the scenes using the sparse but effective stage direction.
I would recommend this play if you’re interested in historical fiction, Chinese culture, and want to gain a better understanding of other perspectives, some are quite different and others universal. ...more

The book follows Sofia, a young princess, as she continues her escape from her Mongol captors set in the 12-hundreds.
Sofia is a compelling narrator. I enjoyed being in her head. She’s intelligent, resourceful, and I particularly liked the way she framed her situation and explained things that were alien to her and to Anna.
While Sofia is clearly the focus of this story I found myself swept away by the details of the setting and travels. This book transports you much in the same way a Diana Gabaldon novel does. You learn something about an exotic (to me) place and time. That said the description doesn’t get in the way of the story, it flows in and out, and allows you to be on the journey with Sofia.
Rebecca Hazell had done a wonderful job with this novel and if you’re a fan of historical fiction this needs to be on your list to read! It’s an ambitious novel beautifully executed. ...more

J.S. Cooper does a nice job with Rhett's backstory and gives a glimpse into why Rhett is a jackass half the time.
The other half the time he's an adorable BFF that turns into more.
The diagologue has been criticized but these are college kids so I don't really have a problem with it.
If you're looking for a sexy and light read you'll like Rhett.

There are so many overdone paranormals out there and this one was a refreshing change. The author is British so I don't know if this reference carries over the pond...but it reminded me heavily of the old T.V. show Fantasy Island. The main character signs up to have her fantasy fulfilled by a mysterious organization called The Dream Agency. Her fantasy is to relive the life of her ancestor from the old west. I don't want to reveal much more about the plot but it's a good one.

I really rooted for Veronica Reason and believe she can be a real focal point for a detective series. Her back story is tragic and I wish it was given more time or left out until a later book. It really deserves full treatment and the glimpses of it are a full story to be explored.
On to the story. Veronica Reason is investigating the murder of a prostitute. The suspects of course are her customers and it appears she did a fair bit of business with the local clergy! The clues are set out well and the plot is pretty tight. (Though there is a story line that is dropped that I felt needed to be better handled.) But Peacock gives us several options to ponder as we go through the investigation. The crime procedural element seems fairly authentic and detailed. I also again, really like Reason, as a boss. I was turning pages to see who done it! This is key in a mystery.
My feeling for the location was also pretty strong with Peacock's writing. My criticism is that the danger element needs to be upped. I couldn't put my finger on it until I was done and that's the issue for me and why I didn't rate it a bit higher. Once the crime scene occurs there needs to be another murder? Danger to Veronica? Something more to heighten the suspense and get the clock ticking.
That said I enjoyed the book and would like to see more of Veronica Reason's adventures....more

They are great lead characters and C.C. Bradley does a great job of making them come to life. I found myself rooting for both of them.
This book is perfect for the sci-fi/fantasy lover. Fans of dystopian future worlds need to visit Bradley's Interim world. The author has a detailed and really well thought out vision of how an incredible technology alters the power structure and perception of the galaxy.
My only reason for not rating higher is number of characters. Just when you're rolling with Danielle and Evan you get pulled to a different character. That said I also have to commend the author for the heart he conveys with Evan's first wife. It's rare to find the love/romance element in book firmly rooted in sci fi but C.C.Bradley has a little something for everyone with Interim!
I can for sure see Evan and Danielle's adventures continuing!...more

The book is very well paced for the most part and it’s clear that the author is also a poet. Her prose is rich and descriptive.
The book itself tells two main stories which I’ll touch on briefly as I don’t want to spoil one of the major plot threads. There is the present day relationship between Angela and Berenice, a mysterious and exotic woman she meets in the lush woods of British Columbia. Then there is Berenice’s origin story which is told in flashback and spans 500 hundred years back to the Italian Renaissance. You might recognize a few historical figures making a cameo. For me, it was the flashback story I found most compelling and almost wish more of the narrative was devoted to it.
The author has very thoroughly researched her setting, lore, and historical events. If I have a criticism it is the presentation of that. Many chapters begin with an almost encyclopedic description of the time, event or setting for the rest of the scenes. Overall, this was an enjoyable read if you’re looking for a fresh twist on a vampire/shape shifter romance. ...more
