A comprehensive melange of the personal and professorial that allows for Vonnegut's writer style to have greater meaning.
The book took several reading sessions to complete, as you have to concentrate/ponder each insight, but if you're up for the mental work, it's time well spent.
A Vonnegut fan or not, if you're a writer, this should be a must-read. 4 out of 5 stars simply because it could be a dry read at times....more

The tale starts out as a typical BBC type murder mystery and the characters are believable. The killer - his look and belief system - are rather unique. I can see this as an eventual series.
However, I found it difficultl to keep interest in the book as the plot is fairly predictable and is severely slowed in pace/tension due to poor word choice/prose mechanics a professional editor could repair.
A love scene takes a weird left turn into a weak attempt at BDSM that is not believable in this tale and ends up having nothing to do with the plot and is never broached again.
Police procedures/forensics are off. More research is needed.
I do look forward to the next installments guided to publication by a professional editor....more

Inviting camp locale with endearing characters who unravel a dangerous mystery.
It takes time for the plot to engage but the mystery is revealed, and daring action eventually takes place. There's a bit of a disconnect as per the ideal reader age, as it starts like it should be meant for tweens but ends up geared more for older teenagers.
If this becomes a series, deeper character development would be nice....more

An author returns home to see his small town unravel. Interesting characters and a small town feel wrap up this unique paranormal event in Book Two of Anderson's trilogy.
Less monologues and exposition and more action is warranted as pacing is slow, but with more story/scene development a full length novel could be had.

Written like a long play - that seemingly being Pete Hartley's forte - Will at the Tower conveys a vital slice of life of the young angst-filled teenager and the times which encapsulated him, of the heretic Catholic church under Queen Elizabeth and the fight for religious freedom.
Courage, passion, doubt rain over Will as he ambles through the north woods and sequestors in various keeps, endeavouring to become a priest, when best laid plans...
If you want a keyhole look into those times and Will before he was the famous bard, this book is a solid take.
It is a lengthy read but those who have patience will be rewarded....more

Each one of these survivor tales delivered its own unique set of memories - some touching, many horrific - all of which far surpass one's own vivid imagination.
These men, most talking now from their graves, touched me, made me feel what it was like to truly be there in those harrowing minutes and hours.
If you want a Pearl Harbor book to go beyond the general documented tale, Pearl Harbor Survivors is the book for you.
I came away with more knowledge and an even greater sense of awe for these brave men and women, and yes, even survivor's guilt, representing a generation born thanks squarely to their own survival....more
