The Vagrant By Peter Newman Narrated By Jot Davies Length: 13 hrs and 25 mins A mute a Infant girl and a goat walk in to a Post-Apocalyptic Demon ruled world. The mute looks at the baby and says nothing. HAHHAHHAHA get it? He’s mute. So like, he can’t say anything………… Ok so I can’t write good jokes but, Anything I ever wrote would fail to come close to this amazing book. I kept picturing Peter talking to an agent and a publisher and telling them about a book he wrote. So it’s a First-person POV But with no internal monologue and he is mute…… Then as they look at Peter with “Oh god who let this nutjob in here” looks on their faces. He would hurry to explain. well he’s not alone he has a baby and a goat with him. He sits back and smiles. The publisher slowly moves his hand to the Security button on his desk. Yes The office was in New York and everyone was in 1930’s suits and the Publisher had a glass of whisky and a cigar. With a big red SECURITY button next to the big black rotary phone. Now I doubt someone would ever get in to a publishers actual office without someone having already read at least a sample and I suspect that not even Publishers still use those phones but that’s how I pictured it. Stop judging me! I am not the crazy one here. That would be Peter Newman. And he is crazy, crazy like a fox. OK now on to my Review!! As Far as plot goes I told you as much as I am going to. I know I am an ass right? Well I knew no more than the title and that a few friends had read it and liked it when I picked it up. So you already know too much if you ask me. The character depth is astounding for the limited ways we get to know them. One of the best Literary characters I have ever met actually. And yes, I said THEM. The Vagrant is good but not my favorite, that would be the goat. Stop looking at me like my imaginary Publisher looked at my imaginary Mr. Newman. I really did just say One of the best Literary characters I have ever met is a unnamed Goat. Ok I better wrap this up Or one of you will try and have me committed. Just trust me and get this book. It is an emotional roller-coaster of humor and sorrow, that I will want to ride again many times. The audio book was magnificently narrated By Jot Davies. A relatively new “voice” in the audio book world. I have only ever listened to one other book by him, Time and Time Again By Ben Elton, also very well narrated and a good book. The Vagrant earns 4.75 out of 5 stars For more of my reviews check my Blog at https://thebloggoblin.com/...more
Have you ever read anything by H.P. Lovecraft? how about listened to one of the radio plays by The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society? No? Well why theHave you ever read anything by H.P. Lovecraft? how about listened to one of the radio plays by The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society? No? Well why the hell not? Go and read them!! It's ok I'll wait... Ok that's better. Now remember how the "Things" that came and everyone dies? Well not everyone did die. A few small pockets of humanity survived for around one hundred years, and one of these Pockets is called United States Remnants. The story is told in first person through the eyes of John Henry Booth a Remnant Recon squadron leader. He is kind of unlikeable the first peep we get in his head. Then his rage at seeing a child harmed made him instantly relatable to me. He goes out of his way to help kids and slaves. For the latter its more so he can kill the slavers, but that is still a good thing right?. if you took some Lovecraft tossed in a bit of Fallout 3 and a pinch of Clint Eastwood you would get those three things mixed together (lol I need Sleep) Actually It felt like I was reading a lost Lovecraft book. Which I suppose could be high praise or condemnation depending. But I say it in praise. The disturbing parts where DISTURBInG. But what I really loved about this book was the unexpected humor. Many times I laughed so much I had to rewind because I missed something. I call it unexpected humor because the funniest moments in the book are when they talk about a dead Private, when people are trying to shoot John, and when he tells Jessica how fucked up the situation is. Cthulhu Armageddon is not a long Audio book Around 8 hours. Jeffrey Kafer did an excellent job Narrating and C.T. Phips did a great job writing. I am kinda at a loss for words. That might be because it is 7:15 am and I was reading for the last 6 hours straight and I am exhausted. But I think it’s more likely that my brain just can’t contain all of the awesome that I read in that 6 hour stretch.
Well I guess I will start like I always do with the Tactile and visual parts of the review. I love the cover It is a great visual description of the book without giving anything away. Plus it’s just some damn good art. “I have been too young to know, and I have been too old to care. It’s in that oh so narrow slice between that memories are made. So enjoy it.” – Sister Pan
I love Marks writing because on a almost subconscious level there is a meter or tempo to it. It’s not like a rhyming poem or anything, and it’s really hard to put a finger on what “it” is. I think “it” is the sentence structure its self. He writes like a great Orator speaks. The cadence of the words pulling you in to his stories almost hypnotically. It has taken me reading 7 books by Mr. Lawrence to actually come to that conclusion. I am probably wrong and its just a compulsion spell.. And while I am not accusing him of witchcraft or sorcery, per se. His prose has definitely cast its spell on me.
You would not believe the amount of times that I have read a series by an author then read their new series, and it felt like…. well like the same books almost. At the very least, many authors fall in to old speech patterns using new mouths. I have actually thought about this way too much in the past, and I came up with an explanation for it. The characters from the old books are in the FBI’s (Fictional Body Importation) Protagonist Protection Program. (Rolls right off the tongue doesn’t it?) Their names have been changed for their own safety and they have been moved to a new world to start over. But just like Steve Martin in My Blue Heaven they soon get up to their old tricks again. n Mark’s first two trilogies he managed to make the protagonists so completely different from each other I was amazed. And Yes he did it again with Red Sister. I know I know, the protagonist in this book starts out as a 7 or 8 year old girl and yes it takes place on a completely different world. So it sounds like it would be easy to make them unique. But even the Narrative flow in Red Sister was different from the Broken Empire books. While still having the Orator’s Tempo I talked about before. It really did amaze me. “But be warned, young Nona: a book is as dangerous as any journey you might take. The person who closes the back cover may not be the one that opened the front one.” – Sister Kettle
Ok Like I just mentioned, Red Sister takes place on a completely new world. New to us that is. Its actually so old it is dying, really in fact it is the Sun that is dying. Causing the slow formation of a Ice Planet like Hoth from StarWars. The only glacier free area of the planet is a 50 mile wide strip that goes all the way around the planet. I Picture it just like Beggar’s Canyon back home. Only wider obviously.
And the only Reason that 50 miles is still open is because of a moon…… “That’s no moon kid” That’s a focus lens! Every night it gathers the light from the dying sun focusing it in to a single beam that sweeps over the area with enough heat to keep the glacier from closing in on them. If that’s not bad enough, the “moon” is in a decaying orbit and will soon return to the planet and then the ice will close on the people like a giant trash compactor.. “C-3PO come in C-3PO where are you C-3PO OH where could he be?” Sorry can you tell I went and saw Rogue One again today?
Final Thoughts
It is not only a great story, but beautifully written as well. I loved the ending but at the same time I wish I hadn’t gotten to it yet. It was by no means a small book but I read it in three sittings, and that only made me want more.
Mark Lawrence has been the author of my choices for book of the year for the last 2 years in a row. Red Sister was the first book I finished this year but it is possible he might get my vote a third time. Red Sister gets a Outstanding recommendation with 5 stars out of 5...more

So instead of patiently waiting till it was on top of my "to be read' pile I pushed the pile over and grabbed it. So glad I did But now I will be even further behind on my stack as ill push everything else out of the way Again when the next book gets here. For a Novel as broad of scope as this it took me a remarkably short amount of time to understand the world building, but at the same time it was not generic fantasy tropes at all. and that is something to be treasured. Good dialog and pacing of the story was just about perfect. Over all I highly recommend this! Thanks for the great story Marc...more

I completely love this series. it had one of the best endingThis review covers the whole series not this particular book (which is great by the way)
I completely love this series. it had one of the best endings to a series I have read in a long time. This story is so awesome I don't know where to start. It takes place in Russia in the not to distant future and is told in first person by Max. A Typical Russian guy around 30 years old with no money saved that finds out he is about to die from cancer. In hopes of living on inside a video game he locks himself in a VR pod and logs in to Alterworld. A few of the books had repetitive parts but hey, its about a guy living in a video game so that kinda thing should be expected. The fact that is told through Russian eyes gave it a unique twist that I enjoyed a lot when it wasn't annoying. and by annoying I mean comparing people/events to people/events I have never heard of before. Also max is a bit of a sarcastic ass in his own head which i loved for the most part but at times not so much. again someth8ing lost in translation I think. but anyway I just can't recommend this series enough! If any of the following things sound cool to you, then you need to read these books. Sci-fi, Fantasy, MMORPG's, War, Sarcasm, Killing large Rats, Immortality, an Albino Ogre and his love life, Unicorns, Spies, the Russian Mob, Samurai, Demons, Raid Groups, Castles, Elite Mercenary squads of 90 year old Grandmothers, Sexy Dark Elf girls, Dragons or Giant Bears named Teddy. I know at least one of those things got your attention so go get this series!!...more
Take a deep breath lads. YOU earned it!! I listened to this the first time right after the audio book came out. Then the last week I went camping. As Take a deep breath lads. YOU earned it!! I listened to this the first time right after the audio book came out. Then the last week I went camping. As I was ...um.. putting the fire out. I started laughing to myself hearing that line in my head "Take a deep breath lads. YOU earned it!!" So I had to do a ""re-reread"" and it was even better the third time. I don't know what happened to my review on goodreads so I'll re-do it too. I love this series so much and all the audio books are narrated by the Great Luke Daniels. If you have a sense of humor and enjoy a unique story. You really need to listen to this series. Im sure you have heard the theories that we all live in a computer simulation. If it were true there would have to be a file of every ones data points, like height and weight. What if you found that file and edited it, with a bit of experimentation you find the data point for your bank balance and GPS location and the century you live in. That's how this series gets started in Off to Be the Wizard. After the bank alerts the Police about how his account never has any deposits but keeps having more money in it, Martin Banks decides its time to go back to a better more relaxed time, like medieval England to become a famous wizard. The second book kind of slows the pace down. but its still a lot of fun. The third book is great though. When the evil wizard Todd some how gets Martin and friends in to his own simulation they will have to fight their way through the badly made game they are stuck in. I loved all the ridiculous things they have to deal with during the quest like the same enemies in every location just rendered different colors and 2 wolves respawn at the same spot one has died every 20 min. It is just such a great series! really you need to check it out. I give books #1 and #3 5 stars. Book 2 gets 4 Stars and the series as a whole at a almost perfect 4.5 out of 5 stars ...more
