From the very beginning - when they found a dead woman hanging over the side of the ship - I knew this was going to be a grand mystery. I was not disappointed. The whole mystery - to figure out who murdered a woman on board and then set it up to look like a suicide - is intriguing. The plot was very well thought out and pretty complex. Towards the end I stopped once or twice to clarify what Raleigh had just discovered. But this didn't keep me from becoming totally enthralled in the book.
I really enjoy Sibella's writing style! It's so relaxed and witty - I love the dry humor she gives Raleigh. I instantly clicked with her in The Clouds Roll Away and was looking forward to hearing more of her and DeMott's relationship. I was slightly disappointed in this area, as DeMott is hardly in the book at all. Raleigh's lack of excitement at their upcoming wedding was also a bit disturbing - if she is this unsure before marriage, I don't understand why she is getting married at all. I sympathized with DeMott as he tried to stay connected with her during the voyage, but was continually ignored or shrugged off.
This was my first time meeting Jack, though he has been in a previous Raleigh Harmon novel. His easy-going, flirty, self-assured character was fun to get to know. A few times I grew annoyed at his "I'm good-looking and I know it" attitude, but he was funny at times with his quirky comments! The way he pushed and pressured Raleigh concerning her engagement was a bit disappointing. He assumed too much. He didn’t respect that Raleigh was an engaged woman, promised to someone. My blood would've been boiling at that comment, instantly raising my defenses against this guy. But then again, with Raleigh's insecurities about her engagement already, I can see why Raleigh didn't react too much. In the aspect of Raleigh's love-life, this story ended leaving me very unsure. I am looking forward to the next book in the series and hoping it will clear up some questions.
Because of this certain mystery and Raleigh's line of work, she doesn't always hear or see the most pleasant things. She discovers one suspect has been involved in several affairs, another in drugs, and two others are involved in pornographic filming. In all three events nothing graphic is described besides stating the facts. There was one conversation Raleigh had with the coroner that I need to mention. They speak briefly about a previous case the coroner had with some teen boys accidentally killing themselves. The cause leading up to their death was a subject that might be pretty heavy for some younger teen readers and I would advise caution.
Having just recently become a fan of Sibella's work after I read The Clouds Roll Away, I was thrilled when I heard about her newest release. It was even better than the previous book! Even though the ending leaves the reader hanging to some extent, I was still content when I reached the final page. Though there are many questions I hope her next release, The Stars Shine On, will answer. The Mountains Bow Down is the perfect book to have handy on your nightstand when you are itching for a good mystery to solve....more

With 512 pages, it does seem like a rather daunting read. When I picked this up and began it, I confess that I wasn’t grabbed from the very first pages, but I persevered through it. By the time I was past the first hundred pages, I completely forgot about how big and thick it was—I was hooked! Jeanette has woven together an awesome suspense book that I would love to see turned into a movie one day.
It took a little while for the main character to come onto the scene—I believe it was on page 71 that you were first introduced to Julie Baker. There was quite a bit of background and different scenes and aspects that needed to be shown before then. But once Julie walked into the plot, things got going and never stopped after that. Julie was a very three-dimensional character that I quickly came to like and loved as the heroine for this book. The other characters were just as impressive and believable—Tim, Enrique, Aguilera, Carlos, Rafael, Rick….everyone! The slight love story at the end with Julie was very sweet and added to the plot, making me fall in love with Julie and her man even more (who, by the way, I thought was totally awesome and made the perfect hero). I won’t say anything else, as I don’t want to give anything away—there are so many surprises in this book!
The plot for this amazing suspense thriller was amazing. The mystery surrounding who the spies were was great, too. I guessed almost from the beginning of Julie’s captivity at who the two spies were, and I was so pleased with myself when I discovered that my guesses were right. lol! The whole book was very complex and completely believable. I can understand why government agencies questioned the author to see if she’d received classified information (as she mentions on the back cover). It’s so in-depth and realistic it’s completely believable! As I continued to climb the very high tension-level to the climax of The DMZ, I was seriously gripping the pages and cheering Julie on.
If there was anything I did not like in this book, it was the very minute detail that Jeanette often gave to the plot—especially for the first hundred pages or so. And from the other glowing reviews of this book, I might be the only one who grew a little restless to skip the very extensive details and explanation and get to the action. I am very much an action/adventure reader and found myself skimming sometimes in the beginning, eager to get to when Julie is kidnapped. (I love a good kidnapping story—and being kidnapped by guerrillas who think she is a spy sounded awesome to me. I wasn’t disappointed.)
So, all that said, I give The DMZ 5 stars for an awesome suspense story, though I readily confess when—and I do say “when” as I have no doubt I will want to relive this story—I pick it up to reread I would no doubt skip over the first hundred pages. But that’s just me. If you want a suspense thriller that has great detail and will take you away and into the thick jungles fighting for survival right alongside the characters, then I highly recommend this book!...more

TheBoy Meets Girl was a refreshing read that encourages singles to find peace in trusting their love life to the Lord - the ultimate romance Writer. The book is filled with countless true stories of couples who both did and did not wait for God’s perfect timing in their love story. Harris also tells his own love story with his wife, Shannon, going through their courtship and engagement, discussing their struggles and commitments, and finally, their joyous success and purity on their wedding. Their love story in itself is a beautiful testimony of God's promise to bring your future spouse to you in His perfect time.
There weren’t really any cons to this book, but there is one caution that I would give to a person interesting in reading it: Harris talks plainly and openly about sexual temptations, past sexual sins, and how we should strive for sexual purity until marriage. While I in no way condemn Harris for speaking on this topic (as it is a very important one in our day), I just urge caution if giving this to a young teen to read.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am encouraged and renewed in my determination to remain both physically and emotionally pure until my wedding day. I highly recommend it to all the singles out there!!

The first chapter of Frantic opens with a bang(I mean, it isn’t every day that you set off to rescue a young woman from a crazy, violent man!). From there, Mike Dellosso does not let up the suspense, tension, or stakes. I’d been introduced to Mike and his work in his previous release, Darkness Follows. That book captured my attention and I wasso excited to be able to read his next book, Frantic! What a wild adventure! Throughout the whole book, the tension continues to build up to a very climatic, and satisfying, ending.
Marny is an easy character to cheer for, as he suddenly finds himself rescuing Esther and her eleven-year-old brother William from their crazy uncle. Marny was just a normal, everyday guy who—when he rescues the girl who gave him the quickly-scrawled message HE'S GOING TO KILL ME—suddenly finds himself in the middle of something far bigger then he’d ever imagined. And stakes that are even higher. As much as Marny wants to, he doesn’t back down to the challenge.
Mike’s writing really brings the characters and surroundings to life. He reminds me of Ted Dekker in the way he tackles and includes the supernatural things into his writing. If you at all enjoy any of Dekker’s work, then Dellosso’s books are a must for your reading pile!
From start to finish, I found it very difficult to put down Frantic. Marny, Esther, and William seemed to get out of one near-death experience, only to fall into another. First they are running from a deranged kidnapper, and then from a serial killer. Danger stalks their every step! Definitely a book that will keep you up all night! :-)

The action doesn't stop! Lienad seems to barely escape one thing, when he is then faced with an even bigger problem. Tess makes a fun sidekick and I loved watching her grow alongside her protector, Lienad. These two did not have an easy path, yet they stayed strong to the King. The King that they'd yet to see.
I highly recommend this for readers, old and young alike. If your sibling or child can read...they should read this book! It's a bit violent in places (not overtly, but Lienad is in many fights, gets whipped, etc), but I didn't think it was ever too much for a young teen....more

The Homeplace grabbed me from the first few pages, Lanie’s character is instantly likable and her selfless attitude is evident from the very beginning. The whole atmosphere of the family was refreshingly enjoyable; they were a very close-knit family.
Since my family is much like that – close-knit – I enjoyed reading about how much they came together when the trials began to come upon them. The writing was filled with so much emotion that I often found myself crying with the characters! (You know it’s a good book when you can emotionally feel with the characters in the book!)
Lanie was my favorite character, mainly because of all the trials she readily shouldered for her family when the times got hard. She relied heavily on the Lord to get her through all her troubles, which was such an amazing testimony, even if this is just a fictitious story. Her innocent nature was also extremely appealing, as well as her loving nature of giving and helping others. There was some romance in the book, though it wasn’t the prominent part of the book and Lanie – clear and level-headed – dealt with the guys well. ;-) Her other siblings were also very endearing, though Maeva sometimes made me want to shake her – with her stubborn and rebellious attitude, though she cared deeply about her family, just like everyone else.
So, all in all, this is definitely a book that I will pick up again and read! I laughed with the family during the funny moments, cried with them during the sad times, and hurt with them when matters turned from bad to worse. Lanie will definitely be a character I’ll remember for a long time to come!!

I’ve always enjoyed history, and therefore historical fiction is my favorite genre (after suspense, that is! ;-). Recently I’ve become really interestI’ve always enjoyed history, and therefore historical fiction is my favorite genre (after suspense, that is! ;-). Recently I’ve become really interested in books set around either of the World Wars, and From Dust and Ashes, set in 1945, really intrigued me. Presenting many somber facts about the cruelty of war and a prisoners life after being set free, Tricia Goyer holds you captive with her amazing story plot that will leave you amazed.
From Dust and Ashes is not your typical historical. There’s three main characters—Peter, Helene, and Michaela—and I honestly did not know how this book was going to end. A rather thick book, I soon forgot about the length and became immersed in these characters. Each one was so amazing and memorable. All were well portrayed, vividly described, and so believable, I almost wanted to go search up these names and see if Lelia and Michaela really were liberated from a death camp by Peter Scott and nurtured back to health by Helene Volkneir.
Tricia Goyer did an amazing job with this work of fiction. She wrote with such passion and strength in her words, I could almost feel the grimness of the time period. From Dust and Ashes doesn’t talk about the fighting against the German’s on the front lines, but instead the sobering facts of the camps. What people experience in the death camps can never truly be understood unless by those who’ve actually experienced. But Tricia got as close as possible, in my opinion.
Wording her story so beautifully, Tricia always kept the book accurate, realistic, and true to facts. It’s amazing how much research was put into From Dust and Ashes. But it shows. Throughout the book, accuracy shines. This was the first book I read by Tricia Goyer, but I can promise you it won’t be my last! I cannot wait to read more historical fiction by such a talented author. One thing really stood out to me throughout the entire book is that Tricia Goyer wrote this story from the heart. It shines from every page. I highly recommend it for any historical fiction fan. ...more

When I first began this book, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve never read a story about what it was like before the Flood. But Kacy is an amazing author who weaved a touching story effortlessly into history. The story of Annah instantly intrigued me, in that she has not spoken a word to anyone in years. Her silent suffering, that no one in her family cared to ease, was heartbreaking.
The bible doesn’t tell us much of what it was like before the Flood, but Kacy gives us a good idea of how evil it was through the lives of Annah’s twisted family – if you could really call them a family. Annah’s child-like faith in the Most High – whom everyone else thought was a foolish legend – was what helped sustain Annah in the years after her father’s murder. The entrance of Shem was like a bright light into Annah’s dark world, just as she was considering ending it. I loved reading their story as their two lives continued to weave itself together.
All in all, this is definitely a book that I won’t forget anytime soon! Kacy is a wonderful author and sticks to the biblical facts from Genesis, while adding in the special story of Annah. I highly recommend The Heavens Before.

With a mixture of suspense, action, and a heart-felt story about a marriage that a man wants so desperately to save after he hurt his wife. Reminded me of the movie Fireproof, except with a whole different story and plot - it was great!
After Nick Stathos sends his marriage towards divorce when he has an affair with his deceased best friends sister, he wakes up to the sin he's committed and confesses it to his wife. Angry at him turning to another woman, Liegh is determined to file for divorce and leave Nick and Golden Gate Mercy Hospital - where she works as an ER doctor - behind. But after a lot of counseling from his pastor, and asking the Lord's forgiveness for his failings, Nick wants to give his marriage another chance...he just needs to convince Liegh to also try again...
The events that take place in the ER were interesting to read - all the quick, life-changing decisions that Liegh needs to make in order to save a life. It was really neat to peep into the life of an ER doctor. And following Nick around on his missions of mercy to the Johnson family was touching.
There is one caution I would give - younger readers might not be read for this book. Nick has an affair with another woman, and although this scene is done months before the book opens up, there is still talk of it, and other acts done by married couples within marriage. But for older teens and adults, it was a good story about being faithful in marriage.
Besides this, I enjoyed the book from cover to cover - finishing the book in one day! It was a great read and I am sure I will read it again very soon!
Thanks to Tyndale House Publishers for sending me a complimentary copy of this book! :-)

So when I saw that it was getting reprinted, I knew I had to get them to add to my library of books. After finishing this first book in the Secret Refuge series, it still remains one of my favorite historicals of all time. I am a BIG lover of history and, more specifically, the War Between the States, and for such a controversy war, Lauraine handles it well.
While both the main characters in Daughter of Twin Oaks -- Jesselynn and Louisa -- have their father and brothers fighting for the Confederacy, Lauraine gives the gritty facts of that war between brothers and shows how, for many people, it didn't matter what uniform they wore. Jesselynn tries to keep her pure-breed horses out of the hands of both armies--North and South--and Louisa is desperate to give aid to any wounded man in uniform--blue or gray.
As I said, after rereading this book, it still remains my favorite book on the War Between the States. I am already diving into the next book in the series, Sisters of the Confederacy!

I loved every second I spent in this book, breathlessly reading and unable to stop. (And, yes, it is now a favorite thriller!) I was a bit confused how this book would be, since the synopsis has Clark going through something, and then Jamie goes through another thing four years later. I didn’t understand how the time-lapse would work into the story, so just decided to start reading. And I am glad I did! It all made sense in the end and made for a totally awesome book!
There are many characters in this book and Randy brought each of them to life through his book. Clark and Jessica were amazingly strong people. I can’t imagine going through what those two did. And seeing the love they had for each other was very sweet. My heart bled for Clark as he tried to rescue Jessica because the mafia could bring her harm. That first part of the book was so intense! And when Jamie entered the picture with her law student peers, Isaiah and Wellington, the plot continued to thicken and build. Jamie was fun to get to know and I liked her strengths and independence. Isaiah was just plain cool! He was one of my favorites. All the characters in False Witness were amazing and unforgettable. If you didn’t know, suspense/thrillers are my all-time favorite genre. So I love a plot that will take me for crazy spins, unexpected turns, keeping me on the edge of my seat, and my fingers gripping the pages. And that is what I found in False Witness. The plot was amazing. I haven’t read a book before about people going through the Witness Protection Program, so really enjoyed that angle and what it added to the story. Randy did his homework on this book and it shows in every aspect of this plot. There is a lot of violence and torture in this book, so younger teen readers might not be comfortable with that--which is pretty heavy in this book from blowing out kneecaps to threatening to do surgery on a victim without any pain medication. I didn't find this a problem for me, but others might.
Randy’s writing style is unique and vivid. There wasn’t as much dialog and a lot of telling. I like books with a lot of dialog and more showing, but this is the author’s style. And the adventures and peril that the characters went through—and the awesome time I had just reading the book—made me not even notice it after a while, I was so caught up in the story!
What else can I say about this amazing book? It was just awesome! This is the first book I have read by him, and it will not be my last. He is an author worth looking out for as he continues to write. And when I flipped through the last few pages at the back of the book after I finished the story, I was ecstatic to find out that Jamie Brock’s story will continue in The Last Plea Bargain that comes out next year. How cool! I loved getting to know Jamie and, hopefully, I will get to know more about Isaiah and Wellington as well! False Witness is a rip-roaring adventure that you need to experience! I highly recommend it!...more
Rebel is a great conclusion to this wonderful series! I honestly didn't expect to like the Brides of AlbaFirst posted on my blog, Legacy of a Writer.
Rebel is a great conclusion to this wonderful series! I honestly didn't expect to like the Brides of Alba series as much as I have—but I'm almost crazy about them! I LOVE anything medieval-ish, and this series takes place in the late 6th century, so…yep, Linda Windsor is now a new favorite author of mine!!
I really grew to love the two main characters! Both Alyn and Kella caught my interest as children when I read Healer, so I was eager to read about them in Rebel now that they've grown up. Kella surprised me in a very big way (though I won't say how to prevent giving away a spoiler ;-), but after I got over my surprise, it really helped to shape her character and show her growth throughout the novel.
And while I really loved the characters, what I loved most about Rebel—this whole series, really!—is the historical detail that Windsor goes into! Not only is there a lot of suspense, adventure, and even some sword-play, but there is also a large amount of history woven in. And very tastefully done—I never grew bored or felt the details too tedious. A few times it got complicating, but the information at the beginning of the book helps a lot!
The way Alyn and Kella’s wedding is brought about was really neat, and I just loved watching them fall in love with each other. While the book is gruesome in places, I don’t think it’s too mature of a read for teens—as long as they don’t have a weak stomach. While there are a few scenes between a husband and wife, Windsor did a great job of keeping the book clean. All in all Rebel lived up to the expectations I had for it. I can’t wait to see what Linda Windsor will write next!...more

A book like that deserves the 5 stars I'm giving it! In this story, there is adventure, peril, romance, heartache, challenges, redemption, and lessons to be learned from everything. Certainly a read you won't want to miss, and I am pretty sure I will be picking it up in the near future to read again!
The relationship between Adela and Phillip was an interesting twist and opener for this story. While he displayed an outwardly charming and perfectly dashing character I felt him rather skin-deep and pushy towards Adela as the story progressed. To be able to tell this just from the way the author portrayed him to act was, I thought, wonderful. Adela herself was an amazing character to get to know. April really knew how to describe her characters in such a way, I felt as if they were real people. Totka, Zachariah, and Lillian were also well developed and believable characters.
There were a few spots in the book where it got a little physically between characters who were not yet married to each other. Nothing serious happened, yet I was slightly uncomfortable as to where it was going until the heroine, Adela, put a stop to it. It didn't ruin the book for me, but I just wanted to point this out, as it may not be suitable for younger readers.
As a whole, this book was a wonderful read and I recommend it for those of you who love a good adventure story mixed in with a love story. Adela's winning personality and heroic efforts to support her mother and sister after they are captured by the Indians was sweet to read and endeared her to me. And once you read the last pages, you will be looking forward to the sequel even more - yes, it is a bit of a cliffhanger! ;-)
Thanks goes to April Gardner for sending me an Advance Readers Copy of Wounded Spirits to review!

It was SO awesome to delve back into medieval life alongside Gabi and Lia again. And with the addition of Ali to the band, things sure got VERY interesting during the course of this book!
While I was very frustrated with Ali in the beginning, she grew on me. And, hey, I couldn't blame her for her misguided beliefs--I might've done the same were I in her shoes. And I felt her pain when she found out, so cruelly, who the bad guys really were. Her writing style is quick, sharp, and engaging, dragging you right into the story alongside Amelia, Quentin, and Damien as they experience the Titanic in all its glory…and tragedy.
Amelia is a very sweet girl, and while we meet her as she’s boarding the Titanic, bound for a new life, it isn’t long until I felt as if I’ve known her for ages. Her sweet personality and caring, selfless heart instantly makes her stand out to me—especially as her first scene show her giving a man down on his luck a second chance. Inspiring!
The romance within By the Light of the Silvery Moon was really fast. And I mean fast! I generally like to see a slow development of feelings, whereas with this book things begin quickly with those “first looks” and within a few days romance is heating up on the dance floor! But, to my surprise and delight, Goyer did an amazing job at portraying Amelia, Damien, and Quentin’s romances in a very realistic and believable light.
As I read and enjoyed in Amelia’s adventures aboard the Titanic, I approached—with much dread—that one fateful morning that witnessed the death of so many people. My heart rejoiced at the many acts of heroism and selflessness…and it bled when Amelia was unable to convince the people in the lifeboats to try to pick up survivors. By the Light of the Silvery Moon is a very memorable read that is sure to entertain the reader to the fullest…and cause a few tears to be shed in the meantime!...more

As soon asI really, really enjoyed the first book in the Safe Lands series, Captives, and have been looking forward to the next book for months now. As soon as Outcasts arrived in the mail, I snatched it up as soon as I had free time to read. It had been months since I had been in the 'Safe Lands' with the people of Glenrock, but it didn't take me long to pick up dive right back in, almost as if I'd never left the Safe Lands.
Outcasts picks up not long after Captives leaves off and reintroduces you to Kendall - a surrogate mother for the Safe Lands - who witnesses a murder. With this kind of an introduction, I was instantly sucked back into this world and was thrilled with the way Jill Williamson kept things moving throughout the entire book (which is over 400 pages long!) The three brothers - Levi, Mason, and Omar are there old selves in Captive and I was once again annoyed at Levi's bossiness, warmed by Mason's tenderness, and touched over all the pain and despair Omar kept trying to dig out of.
Shay was, hands down, my favorite female character. I loved her gentle spirit, loving nature, and forgiving mentality. Her struggle with forgiving Omar the wrongdoing he did against her was real, but I really appreciated and loved how she overcame her feelings and was able to forgive and love Omar in a Christ-like way. There were several other characters in this book that I really liked such as Mason, Ciddah, and Zane.
Living in the Safe Lands is not for the faint of heart, be forewarned! The people in the Safe Lands embrace sin with open arms, so there are a lot of people in this book who sleep around with many people and use drugs heavily. I wouldn't recommend this series for younger teens, but those mature enough to understand the underlying message will appreciate Outcasts a lot. Just because something feels right, doesn't mean it is...and doesn't mean there won't be consequences from that act of pleasure!
Jill Williamson did an amazing job keeping this book safe for teen readers, though, and I really appreciate her not taking some scenes into more detail than necessary. All in all, Outcasts was a great book that I all but devoured! And it had such a big cliff hanger! I got to the last page and was like, "Noooo! I have to know if they survive now!!" Haha! *sigh* Guess I just have to practice patience and wait a whole year before the next book comes out...but wait I must!
