This book clearly targets engineering technicians or business types, the students who don't excel at math

The little bit that covers probability is weak. I would like to see a short chapter introducing the relevant distributions with enough examples to teach students how to use the pdf and cdf functions provided.

And what is it with the publishing industry that they can't read the books they write. I've taught my class three times with three different books and each is FILLED with typographical errors. This is ridiculous. The Minitab example for ANOVA is WRONG....more

This is the 9th edition of a popular textbook on the use of statistical methods in quality control. I selected this book for an industrial technology class I teach.

By the ninth try I would expect a nearly error free, well written book. Sadly, this edition again has multiple typographics errors, refers to topics as if they will be thoroughly covered in later chapters (gage R&R has been gutted to being useless), and important material from the 8th is no longer even there even though these methods remain common in industrial practice (e.g., Dodge & Romig inspection plans).

I have not finished testing all the Excel templates but those delivered with the 8th edition were error-filled and actually interfered with student learning.

Two chapters have been added which contain material that may be beyond the needs of typical engineering technicians - ANOVA/DOE and Taguchi orthogonal designs. Each chapter includes topics that might have been interesting to some students but not at the expense of removing tools that they will need - gage R&R is a tool used daily by students who graduate from our program but what merely adequate in the 8th is now wasted reading.

Despite the fact that we used the 8th edition, there were numerous typographical errors in the text.

A CD accompanies the book. Several of the Excel templates provided have bugs and do not match the examples presented in the book, not because of typos in the text but because the formulas were wrong. Other templates were horribly designed - who labels a column as the average and then computes (column A)/2 + (column B)/2?

I always tell my students to do problems which are answered in the back. With this book, that wasn't always helpful. Some of the answers in the back are wrong, obviously not related to the question. I suspect that the answer section was copied from a previous edition and not checked carefully.

Even the instructor manual was poorly done. Again, I suspect the one provided was for a previous edition.

A frustrating book for someone trying to learn, and very frustrating for someone trying to teach....more

Approximately 2/3 of the book covers topics about developing a management system suitable for producing high quality products and services. The last 1/3 covers basic statistics for detecting and diagnosing quality problems, reducing the defect rate and then monitoring production.

The book has real-world examples and the publisher provides great resources for students and instructors. I wish all authors and publishers did as good a job....more
