Ghosts of Gotham by Craig Schaefer is another guilty pleasure read by one of my favorite authors. This is a pretty big change from Daniel and Harmony. It is a mystery, an adventure, and a love letter to New York City. This is a story where you are better off going in without much knowledge of what this is about. To simply summarize, there is an ambitious and motivated reporter, a rich mysterious client, the big Apple, and of course an Edgar Allan Poe manuscript.

Shadow Captain by Alastair Reynolds, book two in the Revenger series can almost do no wrong with me. I love his writing style, his pacing, and of course his genre, science fiction. This book is something that none of his other books are, including The Blue Remembered Earth series, it is accessible to all, including the young adult crowd. That does not mean that it is written down to the YA crowd, nor is it watered down. It just means that it is easily digested and not hard science at all.
Comparisons to Mieville's Railsea, and the Shipbreaker series by Paolo Bacigalupi are totally inevitable and fair. Like them, Revenger is an adventure story packed into a science fiction world. I loved every page as this really is my genre of choice.
If you are a fan of Alastair Reynolds then you should read this just to see how much this accessible story is still a Reynolds story through and through.
If you enjoy science fiction on the light side this is for you.
If you want to know about an amazing young girl with a really cool name, Fura Ness, than you should pick this up.
This is a great sequel that was quite unexpected. I love everything Alastair Reynolds!

Simply amazing
Raven Strategem(The Machineries of Empire #2) is a truly fabulous follow up to the awesome first book The Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Han Lee. This is a military science fiction series that is often quite a difficult read but totally worth it for science fiction fans.
In the first book, I loved the characters and the action even though I really could not understand what was actually going on, but I tore through it anyways. Raven Strategem was a much easier read that I also raced through. This is the rare case where I enjoyed the sequel more than the original. I probably should have reread book one again.
Yoon Han Lee has created a wonderful hard science fiction novel that plays to all of my likes. Intelligent, challenging, imaginative, and well paced hard science fiction. This is space opera at it's finest. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

Artificial Condition (#2 in The Murderbot Diaries Series) by Martha Wells is A science-fiction series made for my tastes. The murderbot Diaries is A new series that centers on a robot hacks her own governor thereby making her nearly a person. Murderbot really does not like interacting with people and would rather be on her own. She really doesn't take her job seriously and is quite sarcastic. Bad things have happened and people were killed as a result of her. This is a full length space adventure that was better than the first.
As with all Wells novels this is a fast-paced well written story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The survey team comes under attack, people are killed, an unknown adversary. The story works as we get to learn more about our nonhuman protagonist. I really like this book and wish it was a full length novel. I am a huge fan of Martha Wells and can't wait to read more from this.

Let's just say that this book is the dirtiest and darkest in the series and we get answers to many series long questions. I love where the story is headed. My only criticism is that I feel that there should be more...many more.

Black Helicopters by Caitlin R. Kiernan is a new weird horror novella by one of my very, very, favorite authors writing today. I am a massive fan boy of all things written by Kiernan. She is my favorite horror author, often writing lovecraft-like stories twisted with the new weird. Her writing is off the charts and other often require the reader to work with it and to delve into it. Caitlin R. Kiernan will change your world if you are willing to do some work to allow yourself to be transported into the dark, dirty, and often scary corners of her mind.
Black Helicopters is a difficult read and often somewhat incomprehensible... But, it is magical in a way that only words can convey. Influenced by Lovecraft and Poe and many others it is an atmospheric horror story that spans hundreds of years. It would make a fabulous full length novel.

Only Human by Sylvain Neuvel is the third book in the Themis Files series. Book one was a really fast and fun science fiction ride that started out the series with a bang. Book two upped the action and the story.
This the third book in the series was the weakest. It felt a bit drawn-out and predictable. I enjoyed it and it works as a conclusion but I nearly lost interest.

Starshine by G.S. Jennesen is a fantastic science fiction thriller with a tiny twist of romance. Great characters, cool science and an amazing heroine make this story work. I was so intrigued by the spaceship Siyane that I really hope it is even more of a feature in the later books.

This was a better story than book one. Cool setup and plot with all of the experimentation and mysteries. I really great had fun learning things along the way.
Poltergeist also has a better ending that was quite satisfying.
I really enjoyed it. So much so that I wanted to immediately go on to book three..

Just Another Judgement Day by Simon R. Green is book number 9 in the Nightside series. I really enjoyed this book and it reclaimed it's shine. The Nightside series is one of my favorite today and a perfect example of how good the Urban Fantasy genre can be. I would read about John Taylor everyday if I could.
These stories are classic noir like private eye mysteries in an urban fantasy setting. They are perfect for my interests today. I have been reading a lot of urban fantasy lately. Combine my new favorite genre with a detective noir like story and you have made me something special. I loved this book. I loved the writing of Green. I loved the world of Nightside. And I especially loved our main character (can't call him the good guy), John Taylor.
These marvelous urban fantasies have worked because of the amazing place, the scary and relatable hero John Taylor, and his equally interesting friends and associates. I love the humor, the action, and the writing...
A fun intimate story about John Taylor doing what he does best. Even though this one lacked the emotional punch, I could read these books all day every day. Thank you Simon R. Green for the amazing series and kick-ass, bad-ass, and simply cool hero in John Taylor.

Alastair Reynolds is my very favorite authors and Elysium Fire is the sequel to one of my all time favorite science fiction novels. Well let me sum this one by saying I was surprised at just how much I loved this book. It plays to all my favorite things...high tech, cool mystery, strong lead detective, hard science, great world building, gadgets, monsters, and gobbley goo like magic. This book has it all.
If you read the first book then this is a book that should not be missed. If you haven't read Alastair Reynolds, well, you have really been missing out.

Tool of War book 3 in the Ship Breaker series. What a great fun read. This book and series are YA gems by Paolo Bacigalupi.
Tool, the augment and scary killer from the first book is the main character in this one. The the plot, the scope and even the storyline are a real blast.
Like other Paolo Bacigalupi novels, Drowned Cities is a fast and incredibly enjoyable story that both adults and young adults will enjoy. I could read his novels every day. There is something raw and real about his end of the world scenarios that just touch you the right way and make you feel like there is still a glimmer of hope in humanity. His writing style is somewhat simple. He adds in the little details and some world building thereby creating a story that is rich and filled with the human spirit. I love that in this book, it turns out that Tool was more human than most of the soldiers and other side characters portrayed.
If you haven't read Bacigalupi, and are a fan of dystopian type young adult novels, than his works should not be missed. For pure enjoyment the Ship Breaker series is five big stars. I am a huge fan!...more
