She finds herself teamed up with a Frog-Thing as she finds a castle with many doors in a small hallway. She links up with faeries and goes across the water, and to the sea. Her many adventures find her in trouble sometimes with trolls, and she must face danger. Some creatures are kind, and they are unusual beings that no one has seen before. Sometimes the beautiful little girl in the white dress is selfish and unkind at other times generous. Micah Genest, the author, takes the children, who will read this story, into an astounding world where his imagination will delight them and sometimes make them sad. But the heroine deals with adversity as only a child can. Like Lewis Carroll, the author seeks to write a story with hidden meanings, “Alice is engaged in a romance quest for her own identity and growth, for some understanding of logic, rules, the games people play, authority, time, and death." When you approach the book with this idea in mind, it offers interesting and meaningful interpretations of the events and characters in the story. The author is not simply writing a children’s story but seeks to educate and warn his readers that life is never easy and at times difficult. Some parts of the story are sad, but it is all about the way the heroine acts to overcome the tough times. ...more

Four children, with extraordinary mathematical minds, namely, Muko, Paida, Gelio, and Amartia, meet when they attend the School of Mathematics. The two boys and two girls listen to their aged teacher, Pythagoras, who alludes to a mathematical equation that no one can solve. They set out on a quest through the corridors and rooms in the ancient building that houses the School of Mathematics and other high learning institutions that are part of the science curriculum. Although forbidden, the four clever children, by using subterfuge, enter the library where they hope they will discover the solution to the problem. The interplay between the children is the glue that holds this story together, and the various strange characters they meet along the way. The individuals display intelligence way beyond their years, which makes this story intriguing and a must read. Muko may think he is the leader, but the children have other ideas. I can’t wait for Part 2. Reece Pocock ...more

We firThe thing that stands out in this novel, Stone Cold, by James glass is how the author has crafted the main character, Detective Rebecca Watson. We first find her in court dealing with a hostile defence attorney whose only chance to save his client is to make Rebecca look incompetent. Next, she is seeking a serial killer with her physically attractive partner Tony Francisco. The killer has left a trail of dead bodies after being released from Guantanamo Bay seeking revenge from the corrupt officials who put him there. Someone murdered Detective Watson’s father when she was a child. She started an investigation into the cold case and is shocked at the result. The novel uses mostly first-person narration which gives the plot an immediacy and the reader finds themselves feeling every twist and turn as Rebecca finds trouble and every thought as she tries to extradite herself. The plot is a standard crime/thriller with villains causing havoc until brought to bear by clever detective work. However, the stand out in this story is the #Lisbeth Salander type character of Detective Rebecca Watson. A great read highly recommended. ...more
