There seems to be a pattern when it comes to Jill Shalvis books for me now. Sometimes, I really like her books and they are a huge hit for me. But then another one comes out and it seems to be a miss.
For me, THE FOREVER GIRL didn’t continue the excitement from the last book of the series. Although this is the sixth book in the Wildstone series, you can definitely read this on its own. I just found that I didn’t quite connect with the characters like I have with other Shalvis books. I find that especially true with this particular series. The Women’s Fiction mixed with romance usually works for me, but for some reason, I found myself putting this book down very often and it took me quite a long time to finish it. It may be the characters or the concept of this book, but I often find the books of this series to be a bit of a downer. There are some light and funny moments of course. Shalvis’s humor always brings that in, but I don’t always think it fits the situation or the character the way it does with her Romance series. That being said, I guess I will just have to see if the next book will be a hit for me!...more
HARD LINE is book five in the Cobra Elite series by Pamela Clare. With this particular book, we have a Danish hero and for me, this was probably one of my favorite parts of the book. Thor is more of a cold hero, which I didn’t really mind all too much. I like having a variety of different heroes in a series, so I thought that he was easy to fall for.
Samantha, on the other hand, required a little more time for me to warm up to. It’s funny because this book is set in a really cold climate, so I felt like even the characters had some coldness to them. But whether or not that was intentional by the author or not, Samantha didn’t completely win me over. I found her narration to be quite repetitive, especially in the first few chapters. The repetition really got me out of reading this, so it took me much longer than usual to finish.
I enjoyed the setting. It provided a great backdrop for the action and also the suspense. It actually reminded me of another I-Team novel of Clare’s that I enjoyed with cooler climates too. So while it wasn’t a total win for me, I did like several aspects of this book. I’d maybe even say that it was one of the better ones of this series....more

AloRAGE & RUIN is book two in the Harbinger trilogy by Jennifer L. Armentrout and she continues her exciting story about a half human and half angel. Along with her gargoyle protector, Trinity and Zane seem to be against the odds as the Harbinger approaches.
Trinity acts much like Armentrout’s other heroines. She’s feisty, sarcastic, and kickass. I think readers will have an easy time liking her character. She’s one of those heroines that you can’t help but root for.
In this book, there’s a bit more details of Zane thrown in, which I think is so important for his character. The relationship between Trinity and Zane is really about being partners, so although Trinity is used to doing things on her own and in her own way, they have to figure out a way to work together.
This book was easy-to-read and reminds me a bit of The Dark Artifices series by Cassandra Clare, so if you enjoyed that series, then you may enjoy this one as well. I think Armentrout has definitely found a formula that fits her writing style when it comes to writing paranormal romances and I can’t wait to read more! ...more

SECRET AT SKULL HOUSE is book two in the Secrets and Scrabble series by Josh Lanyon. I have been looking forward to this series because I’ve really enjoyed the Adrien English series in the past. Although this one doesn’t quite have the same vibe as my favorite series, it does have a lot of interesting characters.
In this particular story, Ellery’s ex, Brandon, is one of the main characters. I always get a little excited whenever an ex is involved in the storyline, especially when Josh Lanyon does it. You just know that there’s going to be something juicy going on. Needless to say, I really liked this storyline.
However, I did feel like the beginning of the story dragged a bit. It took a while to get me into the story, which is quite different for me. Normally, Lanyon can grip me within just a few pages, so I’m not really sure how I feel about this book. I liked it, but it’s probably not my favorite. I do appreciate the details that the author put into this book though and I think readers will enjoy it, especially if they are big Ellery fans....more

I was so excited to learn that Josh Lanyon was going to write Cozy Mysteries! As a fan of Lanyon’s writing style and Cozy Mysteries, I was looking forward to seeing what a mystery series from a M/M author would be like. I loved the Adrien English series, so I had some high expectations for this new one.
First off, the backstory of Rhode Island offers a different feel right off the bat. It has a little bit of an eerie vibe to it, so I think it matched well with the genre. Another big concept of the series is pirates so it was nice to see Lanyon playing around with that.
I was a little slow to like Ellery, but I do enjoy the writing style. It’s a bit slower than the other Mysteries that I like to read, but I liked the fact that the murder happened quickly. This entire book felt like a really short read to me, but all the aspects of a good mystery are there. I think it has a promising start and I am definitely looking forward to more from Ellery and Carson.
Oh yeah, in case you’re wondering, there’s no on-screen sex or violence in this book....more
I’m pretty late in the game on this series and that’s really only because I didn’t even know it existed. I used to be a really big fan of Pamela Clare’s I-team series and since this is the spin-off, I knew that I had to give it a try. Now, I didn’t start with the first book of the series. Instead, I jumped straight into HARD JUSTICE, which is the third book in the Cobra Elite series.
I think if you haven’t read the I-team series then you can probably get by with enjoying this one, but I think the true fun comes from seeing the cameos from some of the beloved characters of the original series. I know for me, it was one of the things that I most looked forward to.
However, that’s not to say that the characters don’t hold their on in this series. I do like Clare’s brand of characters. They are very knowledgeable and intense, and they often get themselves into a mess of a situation. However, through determination and grit, they are always able to pull through. I do think some of the “magic” that was in the I-team is missing in this series, but the Cobra Elite are definitely special in their own way too. It’s obvious that comparisons will be made, but nothing will likely ever top the original I-team series for me.
Nevertheless, I am intrigued about this series and I look forward to catching up with the other books. It’s nice to see Clare back in action, dishing out intense love stories with plenty of thrilling action and suspense....more

WOLF UNDER FIRE kicks off Paige Tyler’s new STAT (Special Threat Assessment Team) series. It’s very similar to her SWAT series, which is a paranormal romance that features shifters. I really enjoyed that series, so I was glad to see her continue on with that concept in this new series.
I’m not really sure what to say about this book because it is so similar with the other series. There’s plenty of action and amazing thrills in this book, so if you enjoy fast-paced suspense then I think that you will really enjoy it.
Jes’s character was a little slow to warm up to me in the beginning, but then once I got into the meat of the story, I started to enjoy her. The same went with Jake Huang. First off, I thought that it was incredibly cool to see Tyler feature an Asian hero. So many books, especially romantic suspense, feature predominately white males, so I thought it was incredibly unique and thoughtful of Tyler to represent someone else.
In the end, I really liked the book and I look forward to reading more of this new series....more

Robb hits an incredible milestone with the 50th book of the In Death series. As one of my all-time favorite beloved series, I still can’t believe that Robb has been able to pen so many interesting and engaging books in one series.
In GOLDEN IN DEATH, a mysterious package is delivered to a physician who then opens it and dies of the toxins that escapes from it. The golden egg really fit the concept of this book and like I said, I find that Robb is consistently able to bring interesting concepts to this series that have never been done before. It’s an incredibly feat, considering that there are rarely ever overlaps and all the ideas are original.
I really loved this book. The pacing, as always, is on point, never letting up until the very last page. I have enjoyed the journey that Eve has gone through and find that I can relate to her the most out of all the heroines I’ve read about. And of course, there is Roarke, who is simply one of my favorite heroes of all time. I just adore how understanding and supportive he is of Eve and her career. It’s so inspiring to see their love grow and see their cooperation as they work on various cases together.
The mystery and romance is balanced well and there’s enough suspense to keep readers on their toes. This series continues to get better and now, I can’t imagine my bookshelves without Eve and Roarke on them.

I always look forward to Lara Adrian’s book and I have found that I really enjoy this series a lot. EDGE OF DARKNESS is book three in the Hunter Legacy series. Normally, I would say it’s better to read this series in order, but actually I think that this book stands alone really well.
For me, I did feel like the beginning was kind of slow. It feel like Knox and Leni had to take it slow because they were strangers in the beginning whereas some of the past couples that Adrian has featured at least knew each other in some way. Therefore, I do think there was a longer distance to cross with this romance in the beginning. However, despite Knox’s Breed status and his alpha attitude, I found him to be really sweet, especially when it came to Leni. His protectiveness made him really attractive and I definitely can find myself getting behind all of Adrian’s heroes.
Leni is a strong figure herself. However, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the secondary storyline regarding the people she knew. It just wasn’t that captivating to me. However, I still managed to get through it because I liked Knox so much. In the end, the pacing did pick up a bit and I found myself breezing through the rest of the book.
So despite the slow start, I do think that this romance burns strongly. Adrian pays attention to the details, making this book really enjoyable because of the fuller storyline. I can’t wait to read the next book!...more

I’ll be honest, I totally didn’t knew that Suzanne Enoch has a new series out, so when I stumbled across this book, I knew that I had to try it. I’m usually a bigger fan of her Victorian Historical Romances, but who can say no to a hot highlander?
Enoch pays a lot of attention to the details, which brings a really rich experience for the reader. However, I think that if you aren’t familiar with the terminology that Highlander Romances have, then you may find some bits confusing. She doesn’t really explain what the terms mean, so that might require some getting used to. But since I’ve read Historical Romance for years, I didn’t find it an issue for me. I am just mentioning it because I know that there will be some readers who may not familiar with the lingo.
Nevertheless, this romance does feature a lot of other things as well. The secondary cast are important and I think Enoch has plans to give everyone a story at some point. There’s lots of banter and cheer back-and-forth so I’m sure there will be a character that everyone will love. Since I didn’t read the first book in the series, I was a little lost in the beginning. But once I got my bearings, I did enjoy the book. I think I will be going back to read the first book in the series to be caught up....more

It’s been quite a long time since I’ve read a Lauren Layne book but I was in the mood for a light and funny read that was set in NYC and this one definitely fit the bill. I really like the premise of this novel. Audrey Tate has just been betrayed in the biggest way when she learns that the man she was seeing was married and having another affair with another woman at the same time he was seeing her. To make matters worse, these three women all met at his funeral and somehow manage to strike up an unlikely friendship. It was unique and a little off-beat but I liked how different the concept was.
When we meet the main hero, Clarke West, I found him to be quite endearing. He’s been friends with Audrey for a long time so when they come up with a scheme to fool others, it’s not really one that I took too seriously. I think if you like lighter novels with a bit of humor, then this book will be a fun refresher. For me, I was really looking for some novels set in NYC and this book definitely delivers on the details. Since the author is a native, I definitely felt like she was able to capture the essence of the city wonderfully.
Since this is the first book in the series that I’ve read, I will no doubt go back and read the others. I’m still on the lookout for more NYC-based novels so I think Layne’s books will definitely help give me that city fix I’ve been craving....more

DARK ALPHA’S TEMPTATION is book nine in the Reapers series by Donna Grant. As a fan of this world, I do think it’s worth reading the books in order. However, I do find that you can still enjoy the romances well on their own.
This particular features Kyra and Dubhan, which are two characters that I’ve really come to enjoy. I find that Grant’s characters tend to be very consistent so if you like one couple you’re bound to like the others as well. She just writes really admirable characters who are easy to like. Plus, I really like the mysterious backstory that Dubhan and some of the other Reapers have. Her heroes aren’t as alpha as some other PNR books out there, but they are definitely still interesting enough that you want to keep reading.
As always, Grant infuses this romance with several other plots that intertwined with the other books. So if you’re a fan of extensive worldbuilding then you’ll probably enjoy this book. I always find these books such a pleasure to read, so I would highly recommend them if you’re a fan of Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series. I look forward to reading more books from Grant....more

I was very excited to see that Jennifer Estep was going to write another book in the Mythos Academy series. I have read all the series that Estep has written but I think that this one has to be my favorite. I know, it’s a bit of a shocker, isn’t it? But I just really enjoy the mix of paranormal creatures of this book as well as the humor.
One of my favorite parts of this book is the fact that the series has so many different characters. They’re essentially players and throughout the series and in this book, you get a lot of different fun personalities. In the past, I have felt like Estep’s characters can be a little cold. But with this bunch, I feel a wider range of emotions because of the character’s personalities. I just think that Rory and her friends really fun to read and their banter is what keeps the pages turning.
As expected, this merry crew get into a lot of trouble but it was nice to see the teamwork as well as the twists and turns that Estep puts them through. I found this book very easy to read so I was able to finish it quickly. I am hoping that Estep incorporates a similar camaraderie with her future characters and series because they just feel more affable and approachable to me....more

CLAW ENFORCEMENT is the seventh book in the Second Chance Cat Mystery series but it’s the first book from this author that I’m reading. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this series so I wanted to try it for myself. To be honest, I avoided this series because I had it in my mind that this was another series that I tried and didn’t like. I won’t mention which other cat-themed series that was here, but when I realized that I was mistaken, I jumped at the chance at reading this and I’m glad that I did.
Sofie Ryan’s writing style is simple and clean, making it very easy to follow. You don’t need to read the series in order, but it helps if you want to get to know the characters of the story. Of course my favorite part of this book was Elvis. I think if you’re a fan of cats, you really can’t go wrong with this series. It’s got great pacing and charming characters. I also think it’s a great series for readers who may be new to the genre and want to give Cozy Mysteries a try. With that being said, I am definitely looking forward to trying more of the books in this series....more

Jennifer Estep is back with another Elemental Assassin book. I wasn’t sure where exactly this series was going because there are so many books already in the series. However Estep seems to have a new idea each time. Despite this book being book eighteen in the series, I do think that it offers something different for readers.
First off, I have to say how I liked how true Gin has continued to be throughout this entire series. While I love seeing character development, Gin has reached a point where I feel like she is steady. So any obstacle or new adventure that comes her way doesn’t seem so dire anymore.
However, that is not to say that this book is lacking in action and suspense. In fact, there are a lot of interesting scenes for readers to devour. I think this book flew by so fast because I’m so used to the writing style now so it’s been a great pleasure to see Gin and the gang back in action....more

Laura Childs returns with yet another amazing installment in the Teashop Mystery series. This time, Theodosia and Drayton are invited to a bird hunt that goes wrong. As always, the murder happens quite early on in the book and this is honestly one of my favorite things that about this series. The pacing is always upfront and center, pushing the rest of the plot and intrigue further. I always rave about Childs writing because of this. Despite it being a Cozy Mystery, she definitely does not waste any time in engaging her readers.
I was hooked from the very first page and stayed up all night to read this book. I just love the quaint style of writing that this series has and the elegance of it all. It’s a great juxtaposition for all the mystery that happens in the series. I honestly think that Childs can come up with so many different plots for this series because the characters are just so versatile. There’s really no stopping Theodosia when it comes to solving mysteries!
It’s really no secret that I adore this series and I am definitely always on the lookout for more books by Laura Childs!

I can’t believe that BREAK THE DAY is already the sixteenth book in the Midnight Breed series. Lara Adrian pens another fun and exciting story for readers with Rafe and Devony.
Now with so many books already out in a series, often a series can get a little bit old or repetitive. However, I found that with this series, and this book in particular, Lara Adrian is capable of bringing forth stories that are fun and engaging without being too repetitive. Take Rafe’s situation for example. As a former Breed member, he will go through experiences that none of the other characters of this book go through. I really loved this twist and found it to bring so much excitement and intrigue to this series.
So while Adrian does keeps things fresh, there’s also another part of her writing that likes to stay true to the genre and the previous books in the series. For example, I found Devony’s character to be a nice reminder of why I love this genre. It’s been a while since I’ve read a Paranormal Romance, but Lara Adrian and the Midnight Breed series always makes me remember why I love it. Devony’s tough personality is so consistent with the heroines in this genre that it brought back good memories of this series. I think that this element, combined with the new twists in the series, makes the Midnight Breed series by Lara Adrian a must-read....more

We’re back in Bar Harbor with Bella Andre and the Maine Sullivans! THERE GOES MY HEART is Rory and Zara’s book. When Zara learns that her ex and her stepsister are getting married, she goes to find some comfont in drinks. That is where Rory finds her and tries to help her.
Instead of going to face her ex and stepsister alone, he volunteers to be her fake boyfriend in order to fool them. To be honest, I’m not usually a big fan of this kind of trope just because it often comes off as too cliché. But I did like the chemistry and romance between the two. They had really good banter so I definitely wished that the premise was a little more original. The whole proposition happens quite quickly, which makes the book go by pretty fast. I would’ve loved to see Andre slow things down a bit more so we could savor the romance a bit more.
Nevertheless, THERE GOES MY HEART is a quick, fun read. I like that Andre incorporates so much of what we love of the Sullivans. But I am also hoping to see some more new ideas in the future books so we have something to be excited about too....more

As I sit down at the computer to write this review, I really am not sure about my thoughts. While I do enjoy aspects of the book, I just don’t know if it’s a good fit with my reading style.
Lorna Barrett’s writing style is unique because she has quite a large cast of characters and therefore, I think if you’re just trying to dip your toes into this series, it might be hard. Since I haven’t read too many of the other books in this series, I feel like that might be why I feel a little indifferent to it.
The funny thing is, I don’t have this issue with other Cozy Mystery series that I jump into. Even without having read any of the prior books, I don’t have an issue with falling in line and enjoying the book. Since each book has a conclusion, I didn’t think it would be a problem. But even after reading a few books from this series, that real connection is missing for me.
I think I may have to come back to this series after having read a few of the earlier titles. But if you’re a fan of Jenn McKinlay’s Library Lover’s Mystery series, I think you’ll probably enjoy this one too. They definitely have a similar feel to them....more

Kate Carlisle’s books are quickly becoming a favorite amongst Cozy Mysteries so I was very excited to read SHOT THROUGH THE HEARTH. This is the seventh book in the Fixer-Upper Mystery series and although I honestly don’t have much interest in this topic, I do really like Shannon a lot and that is the main reason why I like this series.
When Shannon’s friend Raphael Nash asks her to help with a massive project, which will benefit humanitarians, she knows that she’s in for a lot of work. However, she doesn’t count on a rival to try and sabotage the billionaire’s plans. When the rival ends up dead, she must now try to get to the bottom of this mystery and clear Raphael’s name before the trouble really starts.
Although I wasn’t fully committed to the premise of this book as much as I have been with the other books in this series, I found myself still enjoying this book. Like I mentioned before, I really think this is due to Shannon’s character. Not only if she fun and charming, but she’s also quite logical and when it comes to this genre where these amateur sleuths can get themselves into a various of silly situations, I think this is important. So although a lot of things happens, it’s never too over-the-top and I totally appreciate this. It makes me enjoy the series a lot more....more
With book two in the Triggerman Inc. series, Marie Harte delivers yet another intense and entertainment story for Deacon and Solene.
I would highly recommend read this series in order because of its connections with the first book. The ongoing thread of the baby starts with the first book and I imagine it will continue on throughout all of them. It’s a cute touch, but because this is a Romantic Suspense novel, it does seem a bit off-beat, which I think was the intention of the author.
That being said, this book isn’t going to be your typical suspense novel that you’re using to. It’s quite a bit lighter in tone, mainly because of the banter that the guys have. But it does contain that intensity which I think is important for all suspense novels.
I think it will be interesting to see how the next book will turn out because Harte has set up that book well and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what’s going to happen next....more

So I know what you’re thinking… what are you doing reading this series again, Annie? The answer is…well, perhaps I enjoy this series more than I thought. Although my previous reviews of these books tend to be a little wishy-washy, I always find myself picking up these books whenever a new one is released. I think some of the charm that lies within it is that it really is a slow-paced series, which is great, especially when you’re life is as busy as mine. It’s a wonderful way to relax and enjoy the quiet time that I so rarely get.
Although the majority of the books tend to have a slow pace, I found that THREAD ON ARRIVAL does have more suspense to it. I think that is because the murder is a stabbing. It felt more purposeful and direct rather than poisoning or the victim falling to his death or something like that. With the stronger intention, it create more intrigue.
BUT if you’re a big fan of the slow and steadiness of this series, fear not. It’s still very much there, but perhaps the author is trying to add something a little different to her books. It’s a fun book and I think if you’re a Cozy fan, this one will be enjoyable to read. ...more
