Significant text for each illustration makes this best for parent or teacher reading. One thing that may be confusing to children is how many of the words are written and pronounced with baby talk, including using only "Toofies" in place of the word "Teeth." There's very little description of the actual dentist office or what will happen there. I wouldn't use the story to introduce a first dental visit, but it's great for entertainment and to further reinforce that going to the dentist is a good thing....more
Main character Max is scared to have some baby teeth pulled at the dentist, but his visit goes well because his friend Zoe tells him to be brave. I doMain character Max is scared to have some baby teeth pulled at the dentist, but his visit goes well because his friend Zoe tells him to be brave. I don't like that this book uses the "Sh" word...SHOT. Nothing sends kids into oblivion like the word "shot." We never use this word to describe numbing the teeth because a shot feels different and less painful when it's given in the mouth versus through the skin.
Otherwise, good story for intermediate to advanced readers, as there is much more text than illustrations. The content is appropriate for children of advanced reading age, many of who could be starting early phase orthodontic treatments like the removal of lingering baby teeth. ...more
Good non-fiction review of dentists, what they do, and equipment found in the dental office. Photographs of dentists and equipment are good visual prepGood non-fiction review of dentists, what they do, and equipment found in the dental office. Photographs of dentists and equipment are good visual preparation for a child's office visit. I like the flow of content, which starts with what dentists do, followed by the equipment used, and finally where they work. One helpful page explains why dentists where gloves and masks, protective clothing that sometimes scares children in the office. When reading to very young children, you may need extra time to explain the content further.
Reading Level: Intermediate or parent-read. Intermediate readers should understand how to use a glossary, and will likely need help sounding-out some words, such "Orthodontist" and "Pediatric." Photographs, no illustrations. ...more

Illustrations: Great depiction of what happens in the dental chair: easy to understand, shows dental tools, shows the big chair.
Review: This is exactly how I feel a dentist appointment should be described to a 2-3 year old. Simple dialogue and pictures, "The dentist puts a paper napkin on Max," for example, show your child exactly what to expect during the dental visit. ...more

Book includes a glossary of more advanced Story: Young Arun has his first visit to the dentist where he learns how to brush and what causes cavities. Book includes a glossary of more advanced dental terms, such as "bacteria" and "plaque."
Reading level: For more advanced readers or parents to read. The flow of content per page is confusing; the arrangement of words and pictures bounces all over the page. I think it would be difficult for a child to follow unless someone was pointing to each new idea. Not suitable for beginning readers unless assisted by an adult.
Illustrations: Good example of population diversity. Arun is depicted of Indian heritage ( his mom wears a sari) and the dentist is a woman.
Review: The written content is acceptable in explaining the entire process of a dental visit, from scheduling an appointment, through the check-up, to the reward of a new toothbrush. However, if your child is old enough to understand the defined words "plaque" and "bacteria," they are dangerously late in receiving their first visit to the dentist. Children should start seeing the dentist when they have their teeth. ...more
