I'm enjoying this world that Sandy Williams has created. The sentient ships remind me of Farscape, an old favorite of mine. She's done a very good job of illustrating the tension between Ash and Rykus - it's almost palpable. (view spoiler)[Since they used the time on their way to their new ship to explore their feelings and each other, barriers have dropped and feelings are openly expressed.
Since he'd allowed himself to admit that he'd fallen for her, she had become the spark that linked the galaxies together. Without her, life was as dead as a world without an atmosphere.
Screw the scandal they would cause. Ash was everything he needed: infuriatingly reckless, beautifully unpredictable, and undeniably addicting. She was his anomaly, and he would love her until all the stars of the universe aligned.
I find myself cheering for them while also being frustrated by their brazen disregard for military regulations; as a military spouse, that's understandable. There's a forbidden romance but it doesn't take center stage, which I appreciated.
"There are a thousand reasons why this can't work [...] "I'm an anomaly, Rip. I obliterate the odds every day."
Our heroine has been charged with treason and they've brought in her fail-safe to question her. She can't utter a word about what happened; if she tries, she'll pass out. Moreover, will Ramie be able to keep Rykus, the one person who could force her to speak the truth, from learning what she's convinced will destroy the Coalition she's sworn to protect?
"No fear. No failure."
I enjoyed this introduction and Raime's story so much that I immediately searched for, bought and started reading book two, Shades of Honor. This book doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but I wasn't quite ready to let go of her story just yet....more
