I was impressed by the connections that Gabaldon draws, humanizing us all, between the Highlanders who had lost everything after the rebellion, and the Tuscarora who had lost everything after the disease outbreak. I wished I had been reading in a paper book, so that I could have more easily skipped the gratuitous sex scenes, and one sexual violence scene that was clearly essential to the story, but still so stomach-turning that I lost my need to eat for a few days just hearing the start of it. I understand why she draws those pictures, also, but for trauma survivors like myself, those images are like digging at old scars. No longer debilitating, yet still painful. I have seen, however, that other people can indeed learn from those portraits of pain, for they have neither experienced it, nor can they imagine it, and so these graphic images that the author draws are indeed necessary. I must admit being impressed by the cadence and rhythms of this book, as I listened to it on audio loan, and more interesting mystery about the portalI must admit being impressed by the cadence and rhythms of this book, as I listened to it on audio loan, and more interesting mystery about the portal (the standing stones, and the possibility of Loch Ness being a watery portal) markers. But the rest of it really got to be uninteresting for me.

I was pressured into checking it out at the library by a rather overly enthusiastic fellow patron, perhaps more happy to have someone to speak with in Spanish than anything else, and I ended up rushing through the check out before reading the entire back cover copy. This story starts off with a rather old style railroad tracks murder, and gets more annoying, to me, from there, so I think I will go back to my historical fiction reading....more
