Amazon suggested that I read this book, and it was the right price - free to borrow with Amazon Prime. I was pleasantly surprised. It's a great concept - magicians who can work only with one medium. In this case, as you can guess, the main character works with paper.
I'm not sure what you would call the genre. It's not steampunk, but it has a steampunk feel. Instead it is an alternative historical mystery where magic is used to get by in the every day. Perhaps this isn't a new genre, and I'm just ignorant of what the name is. It seems like it's perhaps in the Edwardian period. At first I thought Victorian but there are a few things that just don't fit in that time period (and I basically majored in Victorian literature) and the clothes sound like late Edwardian or even WW1 era.
What I loved about this book is that the imagination of Charlie Holmberg shines through it. I don't want to give away any of the plot, but I can say that a good chunk of the novel takes place someplace that I would never think of setting a novel. She melded memory and biology is all I can say. Hopefully that didn't give anything away.
It's a fun read if you're into fantasy young adult fiction. Unlike some young adult stories out there, this one is not racy at all. So if you have an advanced reader don't worry if there will be adult situations. There are not. There are some violent scenes but they're definitely PG. I've seen worse on network television....more

Flashback scenes were just lifted from the books and didn't really provide any new insight. Because it's a play it's missing a lot of the descriptive text of what is going on in the scene. It's very much left up to your imagination as to what the characters and setting look like. However, some of the stage direction made me wonder how they're pulling this off on the stage.
I recommend it for the die-hard Potter fans. I'm not sure if you're a fan of just the movies or you didn't really get into the books that you'd find this play a must read. Because it is a play, it is a much quicker read than any of the Rowling novels. ...more

I would love to see this as a movie that NS has NO creative input into. The subject matter is intense, yet he somehow conveyed the boringness that is working in space. That does not make for a good story.
He's so into technology I would think he would take on an ebook and put all the extraneous information into footnotes and appendices so that there is some cohesion in the storytelling.
I read this because so many people were reading it. I thought that by getting to the end he'd redeem himself and all the over explaining would make sense. But what I learned about myself is that I like stories about people, not technology.
It took me 5 months to get through it. But that's probably because I was using it in replacement of sleeping pills. ...more
