A couple months later, now about 1.5 years ago, someone gave me a copy as a going away present. I still couldn't dig it. Then I read 4 other Michael Chabon books and loved them. ?? Recently I ran out of books to read while waiting for a library reserve to come in, and finally picked this up, determined to figure out what my deal is. Turns out I just hated the first 2.5 pages, and now never want the book to end.
This means I may have to give "Everything is Illuminated" another chance, too.

I was feeling in an Egypty mood after Zhivago and while waiting for Palace Walk to come from the library, and this was Perfect. Writing is really nice -- descriptive, and easy, if sometimes a little over the top/melodramatic (not often). It's transparently trying to educate people about middle eastern politics that we never learned (at least I never learned) from the 1920s that set us up for the stupidity that is now, and it's a middle aged coming of age story without the lewd, whiny-ness of Sex in the City. ...more
