Her words of wisdom allowed me to do some serious soul-searching during a time when my body had to heal physically. Thank you, Shauna, for your honesty and inspiration. This book is truly life-changing for anyone struggling to find peace in our culture that demands more than is humanly possible for anyone who wants to remain sane and grounded in the what matters most- love, family, peace, and joy.
I appreciated Shauna’s biblical and Christian-based values, and I think others - Christian or non-Christian - can benefit from her insights as well. This book was just what I needed during this season of my life. ...more

This is the first book I've read that is written from a Middle-Eastern perspective. The fact that it was told from the points of view of various family members spanning three generations made it even more interesting. As I read, I was immediately pulled into the sights and sounds of each setting.
The story portrays the experiences of a family that is displaced because of the Six-day War in Israel in 1967, and the ongoing wars in the Middle East. The stories that unfold are heartbreaking and leave the reader thinking deeply about the meaning of family, war, culture, ethnicity, and race.
Hala Alyan is a powerful storyteller. Her characters in Salt Houses are well-developed, and I found myself curious about what would happen next. The story unfolds with flashbacks, which I enjoyed. There are many contrasts and contradictions which helps to keep you thinking about the themes and central messages of the book. I look forward to reading more of Alyan's work....more

Mikael Lindnord tells the compelling story of how Arthur found him while Mikael and his team, Peak Performance, was competing in an adventure race in Ecuador. The words and pictures emit the mantra that Mikael states throughout the book - whatever it takes. These words are true, not only in adventure racing, but in life itself, especially when someone is willing to go to the ends of the earth to save another living creature.
The reader, like all who met Arthur after his rescue from neglect and an uncaring world, will fall in love with this handsome (after lots of desperately needed cleaning up) and smart canine. I laughed, I cried, and I was intrigued by how the story unfolded to shed light on this unlikely event - discovering a lifelong, loyal, and loving companion in the remote jungles of Ecuador. ...more
