It had all the elements of a classic whodunnit but with all the modern elements. The setting was beautiful and everyone had a secret and I loved reading the events unfold and seeing more of the characters and the last few chapters were so so good I kept turning the pages and making theories of who did it. It was so so fun!

You can't help but root for her and the amount of twists and turns in this book? crazy!
Not as crazy as the ending tho. I cannot wait for the next book! ...more

I saw so much of myself in both Kiran and Sahaara. We need so many stories of South Asian girls, so many stories of bravery and courage in the face of injustice and betrayal and violation of our rights, our bodies, our freedoms. I loved the way this was written, beautiful prose, illustrations. It hit so close to home which felt so personal and the story is fleshed out where it can be any of our story and I love that about Kaur's writing.

Kay's writing is so refreshing. Witty, funy and informative, he is able to hold my interest in a subject that otherwise scares me. I really loved his approach and his humour in the book. Going it, I really didn't expect the title to be so literal, because it hits you out of nowhere. It really is going to hurt, so brace yourself.
Despite it, what a read. I would recommend this book to everyone, medical graduate or not. It is something so incredibly wonderful, so emotional, yes full of moments that make you go AHA or EEK in that exact order. I need a few days to process that last part and probably need to watch some comedy shows of Mr Kay now. ...more

I am still not okay after reading because what was that? it needs more analysis and interpretation and I love Rainbow's writing style tho this one was definitely different but you can see see the classic Rainbow-ness in the characters and their whimsy.

Ivy is perhaps the most boring literary character I have encountered. Pretty much every character in this book (except for Andrea, who I found rather charming), is so one dimensional and has just one personality trait. Ivy's is her money hunger and validation. She really comes off so annoying and I could not for one bit relate to her.
Gideon is a snooze, at least Roux had a bit of personality but then again, what was his purpose? What was the point of the story? I honestly don't get it. As an asian, I really was excited for it but it left a bad taste in my mouth. Would not recommend this. ...more

The concept of having a midnight library and all the lives you could've had was explored so wonderfully in this book via Nora who is a character I could realte to. I really adored Mrs Elm, she was a fantastic support character.
However in the mid, the book does a little drag but it's hardly noticeable. I also loved the little changes in each life and Nora's realizations as she lives each of them. There were a couple twists that were really well timed. I think what I enjoyed the most was Nora's philosophical ramblings, it really did hit close to home sometimes. One of the best books I've read in recent years. I whizzed through the book so fast, it's quite short and absolutely so fantastical. I love the scientific nature of Piranesi mixing fantasy with such a meticulous approach, he reminded me a bit of Don Tillman from The Rosie Project. Susanna's writing is defintiely quirky in this book and it fits very well with the story being told. Perhaps it's my Type A personality but I could relate so well with Piranesi and his approach to life. I assume I'd be the same if I was stuck within his house. The twists, some were very predictable but it never takes away from the story and others really come at you full on, making you wonder about the wonderful mind of the writer. I definitely would love to go more into Piranesi's world. ...more

Ove is such a heartwarming character, the angry old man personified. You can't help but love him and his ways, his obsession with order and using what car do you drive as a personality indicator haha.
The rest of the characters are as animated and wonderful, I love Sonja and related perhaps the most with her. Parvaneh takes the story forward with her zeal and her drive to help both ove and her family that I grew to love along with the neighbors, even Anders, yes.
I read it halfway, watched the movie and then read the rest and while the movie itself was so wonderful because it captures the emotion of the book to a tee, the book still remains ever so beautiful and emotional. There are laugh out loud moments, moments of pure frustration and anger and a content tear at the end when you know things are the way they are. Books like this touch a part of your heart and stay there for a long time. ...more

This was my first book of his. At first it was a little confusing but Boyne set up his characters so well, making sure to go over the details in the first few chapters to get readers accustomed to the style this book was written in. One story spanning multiple centuries in multiple countries as the narrator faces adversity and loss in his quest for happiness. I loved the history that the book brings and seeing some familiar names was a nice surprise!
However, I felt like the last 2-3 chapters were unnecessary and did not add much to the book, it would have had a better ending was it to end in France of even Australia. I have to however commend Boyne for pulling off this literary endeavour so effortlessly. Very well done. ...more

She was a character that was relatable and relentless and I can see so many readers being able to empathize with her journey.
There are a few things that were not fully developed like the backstory with Russ but the story with Jenny and how Jenny's decision led to Penelope realizing lots of things and bringing changes resonates with me. The writer is very careful in talking about some hardhiting topics and I think it was handled well.

A futuristic fake town with government appointed celebrities living every moment of their day on camera and their stories being written and directed by government sounds right up the black mirror sf8 sci-fi alley. It was executed somewhat well but there were blanks in the story that I could not grasp. I tried so much to like Floss and Orla but there was always something about their weirdly symbiotic relationship that was unrelatable. The spill was perhaps the most interesting part of the story but again, it really was not explained well.
Marlow was somewhat relatable and I could undertand her reasoning and her side of story unfolding but everyone else, especially Floss was so vain and annoying.
