“Submission is no virtue.”
“Incessant talking.” “Unusual zealousness.” “Strong will.” These were, in fact, textbook examples of female insanity in the nineteenth century. Doctors frequently saw pathology in female personality.”
“I must defend myself,” she realized, “or go undefended.” Because no one was coming to save her. She had to save herself.”
First, you will be outraged, then you will be shocked and dismayed and finally you will be inspired and empowered.
Elizabeth Packard dared to have her own opinions about life and religion and was vocal about them in 1860. They differed from her pastor husband, so he conspired to have her committed to an insane asylum against her will, and tore her from her 6 children. This was all completely legal and "normal" back then. But Elizabeth refused to be silent and she fought back.
She not only had to fight her husband, but the "doctor" who was in charge of the insane asylum and many others who wanted to keep "women in their place".
Kate Moore does an incredible job of bringing Elizabeth Packard to life and telling this amazing, true story.

He has no right to deprive future generations of a past that belongs to our collective memory. To forget would be not only dangerous but offensive; to forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.”
“Human suffering anywhere concerns men and women everywhere.”

I've read a lot of similar memoirs, and each one inspires me as I break free from my own invisible chains.
Faith does a great job of telling her life story the way she experienced it. It helps to see why she believed the indoctrination and how it took a long time to even realize she was being abused.
While my story isn't as extreme, my navigation through it all has similar threads....more

Daniella's vulnerability in sharing her story was so validating for those of us who are trauma survivors.
I loved that eventually her mom woke up as well and they are healing together. My adult daughters and I are doing something similar.
As Daniella mentions in her epilogue, so many groups can be cult like if one isn't careful. And the harm comes when people care more about the "church/cult/organization" than they do about the people within it who are being harmed....more

Yet, we could never fathom the depth of how cruelly women are treated and how few rights they have in many Middle Eastern countries.
I am constantly horrified at how few rights many women have around the world. Asia's story is disheartening, but it is only one of many.
After finishing the book, I looked up what ultimately happened to Asia. Thankfully, through the pressures of Western nations and groups Asia was finally acquitted and allowed to leave the country. If she hadn't, extremists would surely have murdered her and her family. Two prominent men who publicly defended her were murdered.
I hope as stories like Asia's are told, it will help turn the tide to give women more freedom and rights....more

I knew a lot of Sarah's story from the NXIVM documentaries I've watched, but I appreciated hearing her account. I resonated with a lot of what she said. The above quotes could be applied to me as well.
This is my 34th book that I've read about cults. I always glean something from other people's stories, and find them to be immensely therapeutic.
I applaud Sarah's bravery and courage in trying to help others escape NXIVM, once she realized it was a cult. I also applaud her bravery and vulnerability in speaking her truth to help others. ...more
