The seeds for the downfall oThis is my first read by the author .I have heard a lot about her books and even got a few to read. But this one beat all! The seeds for the downfall of the great Kuru Dynasty were unknowingly planted by Devavrat and Satyavati. Little did they realize that their seemingly 'small' act would change the fate of the Dynasty in the years to come. Satyavati is an adamant, head strong and determined girl who wishes to rewrite her fate after her father abandons her and preyed on by a Rishi. She married Shantanu the King of Hastinapur after Devavrat vows to never marry so that her children can be the heirs to the throne. Through her sweet talk and shrewdness she plays a great game of politics and is scorned and disdained by all except for Bhishm.
Satyavati and Bhishm together wade through the loss of Shantanu, Satyavati's two children, attacks from the neighboring countries and all through this Bhishm is her pillar of support, who is also instrumental in several of her plans though he is against it.All this he does when Sayavati insists are in the interest of the throne of Hastinapur.
The Queen's vulnerable side is seen only by Bhishm. He loyally stays by her side and keeps up his vow to serve the throne till his last breath. This is a gripping tale around one of the lesser known characters in the great epic. This is the story of Mahabharata through the eyes of Satyavati,a woman who had the determination and will power to attain what she wanted in a place where she was not welcome and scorned upon.
Here is what I think about this book...
*Though I know a bit on Mahabharata, thanks to the famous TV series that I grew up watching, I came to know about the lesser known facts like the birth of Satyavati, people like Dasharaj,Uparichar Vasu, birth of Veda Vyas,Kripi, etc through this book. *The writing is simple and is a gripping narrative. *Each character has a strong personality which is well portrayed by the author. *There is never a dull moment in this book. It is really unputdownable and each time I had to take a reading break to attend to some chore, my mind would be with one of the characters. *It has the right blend of fiction and mythology. *By the end of the book, I actually sympathized Satyavati. I knew her as a greedy and selfish woman who usurped the throne from Bhishm but never imagined the humiliation she had gone through after becoming the Queen. The rejection by everyone in the country and being addressed Daseyi in the palace and yet she had lived with her head held high , hiding her sorrow shows what a strong woman she was! *And I loved the cover of the book.Such a beautiful picture! My recommendation: If you love Mythology go for it without a second thought,it will make an interesting read. You are sure to discover a wide range of characters! Even though there is a little mix of fiction,Satyavati will remain in your heart for a long, long time....more

It is nice to seI usually don't read fantasy genre but when I read the blurb of this one, I was intrigued and was sure that I wanted to read this one! It is nice to see an Indian author venture into the Fantasy genre. Kudos to the author for weaving such a beautiful tale. The story line is very engrossing and is surely a page turner. Though the starting is a bit slow, the pace picks up gradually. There are maps, sketches, foot notes, appendix that adds to the interest of the reader. The narration is good, simple and effective. The characters are well developed.Though imaginary the author brings in front of us all sorts of creatures, sorcery and fantasy that seem so real and he has even explained / justified how they will / will not work!!The title has a air of mystery around it and the cover is just as intriguing! The only Con that I can think of is the print size which could have been a bit bigger. I had to take breaks in between the reads! If you are into Fantasy , this one is surely a great read.Pick it up without a second thought.Even if you are not into this genre, do give this a shot. I am sure it will not disappoint you! Now, I am waiting for the next book in this series......more
