As the druMy Review This historical fiction book is written from a perspective of German immigrant families who lived in Wisconsin during World War 1. As the drumbeats of war were growing louder, Peter Bloch and his wife Maren feel conflicted. Maren’s father has not completed his citizenship papers and the anti-German hostility is increasing. The author lets the reader know what it was like to be an immigrant in America during war-time. People of German heritage were suspected of not being patriotic enough. Americans turned against other Americans and many German people were put in internment camps. The author writes from their viewpoint and speaks often of their disgust of the president and the politicians and patriots who were pro-war. The story shares the story of how Peter is drafted to serve and ends up on the front-lines in France. During the horrors of war, Peter and his fellow soldiers live and die in horrible conditions. The book is extremely graphic and talks of blood, guts, body parts, and is hard to read. The book is a Christian Historical Fiction because it talks about the characters going to church, singing hymns, and trying to follow Scripture. Maren shows Christian forgiveness in the end towards her enemy. There is much drama on the battlefield, and I won’t share what becomes of the main characters, but you may be surprised at the ending....more

He has been recuperating beside his best friend Rich, who is not making a recovery and getting much weaker. Charles reads the love letters from Rich’s fiancé Lady Sophia, and also writes her back because Rich is too weak. He loves reading her letters and imagines her to be a lovely woman. He feels guilty for Rich’s wound and promises Rich that he will look after her when he returns to England.
Lady Sophia learns of Rich’s death and vows to stay with her mother-in-law, Mamie, at Primrose Cottage and take care of her, as her dementia progresses. Sophia’s wealthy family worries about her, but she is determined to stay there. Charles makes his way to see her and dreads the visit. When he arrives, he is filled with guilt and apologizes to her. The faith of Sophia and Charles is shown early on in the book as they each pray and seek God’s guidance in their lives.
Charles stays the night, based on his late arrival. The reader can see God’s plan begin to unfold when, the next morning rude relatives arrive to take over the estate, pushing out Sophia and her mother-in-law. The upheaval is traumatic, but Charles is there to lend physical and emotional aid to the ladies. They all retreat to the Haverly manor and are welcome to live there, but Sophia doesn’t want to be under her controlling mother’s plans to find her a husband. Mamie wants to visit the ocean-side for a while and Sophia requests permission from her mother to have Charles accompany the ladies as far as a seaside cottage. Her mother strongly objects until Charles is given the news that he is now an Earl.
One adventure after another occurs and they are all exciting and fun to read. There is plenty of humor in the book, especially when Charles finds that he is the ward of three young sisters. They are a handful and he has no experience with children. Although Charles and Sophia are developing feelings for one another, a marriage of convenience is decided upon. There is much more to discover, so I hope you’ll read and find out for yourself what will become of the little girls, the suspicious town-folk, and the marriage of Charles and Sophia. I love the book because of the wonderful combination of romance, faith, drama, and swash-buckling adventures! All the characters have their own charms and the story was great from beginning to end. The drama was constantly unfolding and I was drawn into the story as if I was right with the characters. The story was filled with tragedies, but also the beautiful stories of overcoming despair.
The characters living in Liverpool, England become connected because of horrible circumstances. Ruby was in actuality a rich young lady named Lady Rowena Ashland. Because she fell in love with the “wrong” man and was carrying his child her father threatened to disown her. Her baby was stolen by her in-laws and raised as their own child. Ruby and the man she loved, Archie, made a wonderful life for themselves. Ruby was a inspiring businesswoman who made a great life for them. She took in a young man, Ned, who needed family.
When Ruby’s bookkeeper and her twins were killed in a house fire, she took in the pneumonia-stricken daughter, Anna, and tried to save the remaining child, Sam. Sam was taken away by a corrupt priest who sent him to basically be a child-slave in Canada. As you read these harrowing stories, you’ll be totally unable to stop reading. The characters are brave and strong of heart. They go through unbelievable pain and you’ll find yourself trying to hurry and turn the page to see if they will be able to survive.
This book does have some violence and discussion of immoral behavior, but there is no descriptive language. I found it to be a great read of historical fiction during the time of the Titanic’s voyage and the beginning of WWI. You’ll be very anxious to discover what becomes of this family.

She loves pink and she loves bows! In her bedroom bows can be found all over the place: on her curtains, her pillows, lamp, and more. She loves to wear bows on her clothes and in her hair. She has a favorite story that helps her remember how to properly tie a bow. Because many children have trouble learning to tie a bow, Cleo is happy to share it with us all.
The story is about a rabbit who has very long ears. The ears drag the ground and get dirty as she hops around the forest. One day a fox came along and the rabbit was afraid. But, this was a kind and helpful fox. He noticed the rabbit’s ear problem and offered to help. He taught the rabbit how to tie her ears into a bow. This kept the ears clean and the rabbit and fox celebrated with a forest picnic.
I love how the book uses a story within a story to teach children how to do something without making it seem like a lesson. Children can have trouble learning to tie bows or shoelaces. It can be so helpful to make it fun instead of a chore. The book also teaches a song to go along with the steps to follow when tying a bow. The charming illustrations and Cleo’s positive personality will go a long way in helping children try something new. These tend to be the books that they want parents to read aloud over and over.
On An Animal Safari by Sian Moore is an adorable book for young children filled with rhymes. Sian Moore is also the illustrator of this little book. The artwork is truly beautiful! She uses mostly pastel colors and the characters are charming.
There is a softness and whimsy in the illustrations that little ones respond well to. This story features a cute little girl with strawberry blond hair who is embarking on an animal safari with her little puppy. They go from one group of animals to the next with energy and very little fear.
Reading this book makes you feel like you’re taking a visit to the zoo or going on a wild African adventure. The good thing for young children is that this isn’t a scary book at all. Children can even learn a lot about animals and the collective noun names, (for instance: a knot of toads and a journey of giraffes). I loved the book and the positive energy.

Ankido is a British/Iraqi boy and his grandmother is named Habubti. Ankido’s father is an archeologist and has gone missing in Iraq. Habubti leaves Ankido with his relatives and goes in search of his father.
Habubti makes Ankido promise to protect her latest book from Aunt Geraldine while she is away. Aunt Geraldine is the stepmother to his two cousins. She is an angry woman who is always fighting about something. She promised to send him to a school for troubled boys. She soon sees Habubti’s book on Ankido’s desk. She demands he give it to her and a physical fight begins for the book. Ankido’s only choice to protect it was to throw it into the fire.
His aunt sent him away with two men in a black limousine where he fell asleep. When he woke he was all alone on the ground and in a place unlike his home. He begins to experience strange things, and dark forces. He finds a dog and later a girl named Zinaida in the land of Ninevah. After talking with Zinaida and the Scripe he is told that this is the land of Mesopo, which is made up of words.
Ankido learns that the words are being stolen and when they all are gone, Mesopo will disappear. He and Zinaida go on countless adventures filled with danger, demons, and strange creatures. They are on the quest to save the words that are left. As the story goes on and on, the number of words continues to shrink. Ankido and Zinaida are aided by the dog and a flying soul bird named Anzu.
Will Ankido save Mesopo or will he meet a terrible fate? There are so many questions as to what, why, and how this is all happening and what will be the outcome. The author writes very skillfully and will certainly hold your attention. The scary passages with demons and a couple of mild curse-words would make me give the book a PG rating. The ” tools of leadership we see are command, control and divide rather than collaborate, connect and unite”, says Jacqueline Novogratz. We should be rethinking the definition of leadership. Leaders should be filled with compassion and make decisions based on moral and ethical commitments to society. Stephen Schwarzman, of Blackstone, believes that all employees need to feel like equals. They bring them together to discuss issues and problems and everyone is free to offer their opinions. Having a team behind you is necessary, because the leader isn’t infallible. Having a personal relationship with the members of the team is also important. It’s important to connect with people and where everyone feels at home, Carlo Ancelotti believes in having mutual respect, but must be the collective voice. General Richard Meyers believes that the ego must be put aside in order to build relationships and trust.
In Chapter 7, there are discussions on democracy by many distinguished world leaders. Democracy works if the voters are well-informed and are willing to look out for others and not just themselves. Bassem Youssef talks about democracy only working if the minorities are equally protected, and not just the wealthy and powerful. Various men in this chapter discuss their reasoning about why democracy is or isn’t working in America. Leaders from other countries discuss how various types of extremism are causing problems within democratic states.
I have found these chapters to be very thought-provoking and filled with wise men who share their specific reasons for what they believe about democracy. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion....more

Chitra experiences dizziness and fainting-type spells. As it often happens, diagnosing her problem isn’t automatic. She has to go through a few events before the doctors test her with an EEG. We all love a feel-good story that shows that anything can be accomplished with hard work and support. This book isn’t exactly that story.
Joe does suffer a severe stroke and almost dies. But, he does regain consciousness and learns that half of his body isn’t working. His personality is shown to the reader gradually as he speaks about what he is experiencing and how his family is dealing with the stroke. He has many moments when humor breaks through and helps him to cope. I love that his wife and daughter are open to him about his situation. Many families just walk on egg-shells and don’t really deal with what is right before their eyes.
Joe’s daughter Jess is so worried that her dad won’t be able to walk her down the aisle, now that she’s engaged. Her fiancé Matt is always around as they are trying to plan the wedding. Zanna is organizing the wedding, but is intense and pushy. The story now seems to focus on the tension between Zanna, Jess, and Matt as the wedding plans unfold.
I love seeing Joe’s progress, but would love to have the book focused on him and not so much of the day to day lives of his daughter and her fiancé. There is some cursing in the book and a little crude humor. The very end of the book is the most interesting part as many things are resolved in the various relationships. To find out about Joe’s level of recovery, will the wedding happen, and will the family settle into a acceptance of Joe’s disability, you’ll need to read this book.

Although the book seems to fall in line with the typical cozy mystery, it has something totally unexpected….time travel! This cute story begins with a young lady named Alexa who is beginning a new life. After her amicable divorce, she is headed to Pittsburgh to open her own retail shop. She is a talented seamstress. She enters her as-yet-unseen store with upstairs apartment that has been designed by a professional and paid for by her ex. The beautiful building’s interior is immensely pleasing to her.
She’s suddenly surprised by a visit from an older neighbor who brings her a welcome cake and whiskey. The lady grew up in the building which was at that time a pub. After a nice visit the lady is hired to be her bookkeeper. There’s only one problem…the building is haunted. The mysterious cat that appears and disappears is really a ghost cat. But, why is it here?
Then, the next mysterious appearance is by Bobby, who is a ghost from 1953. Alexa is surprisingly shocked, but doesn’t leave the building. Bobby tells her that St. Peter has sent him down to solve the last three murder cases that he left unsolved. These were three women who died, one being his wife. Alexa agrees to help him solve the cases and then they go back in time.
This plot is very far-fetched, but the following tale is pretty interesting. Alexa and Bobby are now in the same building as it was in 1953. One problem is that the present-day Bobby is there, too. They must avoid him while trying to solve the crimes. There are many twists and turns, including the fact that Alexa comes and goes between times. But, in the end, what will become of her? And, will Bobby pass the test from St. Peter?

As a terrible storm is just about to start, Autumn enters the woods. She’s a park ranger who works beside her K-9 Rescue dog, Sherlock. Out of nowhere appears a man, running and desperate. This is Derek, who is trying to find help for his injured brother, William.
Autumn and Derek head back to the brother’s campsite only to find that William has disappeared. They also see blood in the campsite. Wondering where he could be, they know that they aren’t alone in the woods. Now, they have to try and find William. The story gets even more disturbing when they see the group of men who have taken him. These men all have guns and are talking about capturing Derek, too. Autumn and Derek go on the run, but the storm is worse. Autumn knows where a hunter’s cabin is located and leads Derek there.
They hide out, building a fire in the fireplace to help them dry off from their storm-drenched clothing. But, in the night-time, the men find the cabin and Derek, Autumn, and Sherlock must hide in the back of the cabin’s loft.
Because the storm has caused the roads to become impassible and the river is overflowing, there is no way for Autumn to get back-up from her fellow rangers. She must come up with one plan after another to save their lives. After they are eventually captured by the bad guys, they must endure horrible treatment. They try to survive their injuries, the danger, and their weak, hungry bodies
The heroine is constantly praying and asking God for protection. She and Derek are becoming close in this suspenseful read. I enjoyed finding out what would happen to them and the bad guys. Would they ever escape this awful adventure?

Bully Vanilli was the vanilla ice cream in The Frozen Frogg ice cream store. He was the most popular ice cream flavor and didn’t let anyone forget about it. He bragged about himself non-stop. He started bullying Mustachio Pistachio because he was the least-popular flavor. One night he pushed Mustachio Pistachio out of the freezer and onto the ground to melt. The other ice cream flavors, cones, and sprinkles agreed to stop working with vanilla and soon he was all alone.
When he started feeling lonely he realized how it felt to be bullied. But, would he really change? Would the lesson cause Bully Vanilli to change his ways? She uses her experiences in life to teach them about the Christian life.
Her style is conversational and she’s quick to admit where she has failed in her walk with God. She also speaks about giving grace in your own life. She doesn’t think that Christians should be lame. In other words, she doesn’t value hang-ups about modest clothing and dancing. She appears to favor social drinking, instead of the heavy drinking she did in college.
Each chapter in the book gives a theme. She presents scripture and many personal experiences along with her opinions. Then, at the end of the chapters there are questions to consider. She sums up with the question: Is it just me? She shares that none of us are alone, but all face similar problems in life. Her answer is that Christ is the one who can meet every need.

The young lady who is living in and managing the castle will be his bride. When he arrives with his faithful friend to enter the castle he is unable to get in. Claire refuses him at the castle gate, because she hates all Scots. Scottish men killed the feisty red-haired maiden’s parents and left her for dead.

The inheritance has been arranged by the king, so over time Claire realizes that she has no choice but to marry him. She gradually sees that Ian is a very honorable man. He immediately begins restoring the castle and spending money to make the castle into a profitable estate. He treats Claire as a very special prize to be won. He is gracious, kind, and gentle. He begins to gain her trust and love.
But, he won’t have an easy time with any of this. Ian and Claire are later in danger and there are surprises on every page. It seems that everything is against them. What will happen? Will they actually get married and will Ian claim the inheritance?

In the middle-grade book, Dear Brave Friend, children will be comforted in many ways. This is an interactive book that will take children through their many emotions. The beautiful water-color illustrations are perfect for sharing warm feelings.
Dear Brave Friend gives a voice to all of the things that children may be thinking when their pet dies. Instead of dismissing a child’s feelings, this book encourages a child to focus on the good memories and ‘hear’ from the pet. Imagining a pet being in heaven and thinking about the child is part of the way this book describes an animal after it is gone.
In the back of the book you’ll find many pages with prompts and plenty of blank lines for a child to write. They’ll also be able to draw on some of the other pages provided.
